Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 49

The “I Met Milos Raonic and Venus Williams Last Week” & “On Vacation and Need New Music/Radio Station Ideas” Edition

Posing at Flywheel NYC

Posing at Flywheel NYC

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am on VACATION so this will be a brief post to say “hello!” and a call-to-action. I need music and radio station ideas. Really. Please send them ASAP!  Every day I seem to listen to the same radio stations online (because New York City radio is awful) and I am in need of something new in my life.

A few months ago I wrote about my current online radio playlist and while they are all still pretty great (well, KFOG is pretty terrible these days) I need MORE RADIO and MORE MUSIC suggestions.

Sooo, I am asking you all to offer me ideas and suggestions. What music gets you motivated? What are your “go-to” songs? Is there a station in your area I need to check out—please let me know and I will send a personal Brooklyn “treat” to all who help me out. Not sure what that treat will be but each and every one of you will receive one. Sounds good?

Also, in this week’s post I talk about:

Here is a photo of Milos at the event (cute, eh?)

Milos

  • Riding (for about two minutes) with Venus Williams who was debuting her new collection at Flywheel Sports. Co-Founder Ruth Zuckerman lead our class which was a real treat for me as it is always fun to take a class by one of the industry’s pioneers.

Unfortunately my camera died and my awesome pictures have disappeared from my camera (dammit!) so I will have to make do with this one shot of Venus at the pre-event who was talking to a very “pointy” reporter.

Venus

Now onto this week’s Vlog post:

Okay—that is it for me today. I may or may not be posting this week here but definitely follow me on Twitter (@BrooklynFitChik) as I will be taking classes all over NYC this week. See you soon!

Health Cover Star for September:

Ali Larter

The actress Ali Larter loves to have people over for dinner and decided to share her favorite recipes in her new cookbook Kitchen Revelry. She also gained FIVE WHOLE POUNDS doing it!

(Really, that needed to be pointed out? Because I can gain five pounds in one weekend trip to Maine!)

Moving on, Ali seems very nice (she’s a New Jersey native) and includes a few of her very own of tasty-looking recipes in this issue. She also advises on kicking your shoes off to make folks feel more comfortable when they come over which I concur.

So what else is inside the September Health?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: @SweatPink Ambassadorship, Fighting My Inner “Grumpy Old Man” plus an Amazing @LisaJohnson DVD Giveaway 19

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 48

Featuring: “Sweat Pink” Ambassadorship, Iris Higgins Essay from Huffington Post, Overcoming My Inner “Grumpy Old Man” Plus the Lisa Johnson Workout DVD Giveaway!

 DVD Cover Template

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone this week? Good? Glad to hear it!

First of all I am beyond thrilled to announce that I have been accepted as “Sweat Pink” ambassador for Fit Approach wee! Thanks so much to all of the gals there and I promise to work hard to help our community grow. Now that is out of the way—I am ready to dive in. Let’s get to getiin’!

This week I went through my typical “What the hell am I going to talk about on my next Vlog post?” when I came across an incredible essay on Huffington Post written by Iris Higgins An Open Apology to All of My Weight Loss Clients who in essence regrets how she spoke and treated her former clients from a “popular weight-loss company.” Higgins realizes now that many of them might have felt like failures for not losing weight after following her strict advice when in fact they could very well have had real health issues that would prevent anyone from losing weight. Plus, she now realizes 1200 per day calorie plan was far too little for most folks to follow. (Yikes!) and that people can gain and lose weight for a whole myriad of reasons. A great piece I must say

As a health & wellness professional I find it very enlightening when I hear one of my peers humble themselves to new lessons and pass them along to help out others. My good friend Marrilee is a yoga instructor and one of the first things she realized when she first began teaching  was that putting yourself out there to the world as a so-called “expert” could bring up old issues you normally could ignore your whole life. You have to showyour best self when teaching and literally have someone’s health in your hands. It’s easy to forget the power of that and act as if every class and student were the same.

Have you ever taken a class and felt like the instructor behaved as if they were the only ones who counted in the room? Or ignored everyone and just watched themselves in the mirror? Or (and I really HATE this) when they appear to only appreciate the suck-ups and fans in the classroom (evil!)

Part of becoming a good instructor is learning to bring energy and wisdom to every single class you teach. In spite of the air conditioning breaking, or the sound system not working, or feeling like garbage because you didn’t get enough sleep the night before or dealing with folks who will NOT put down their cell phone down (what is wrong with those people?)

In this week’s Vlog post I talk about my own struggle to overcome my inner “Grumpy Old Man” (or more accurately—my inner a**hole) and how I deal with it when it rears its head. Plus, we have a Lisa Johnson DVD giveaway (In fact, I am giving away FIVE of her DVDs this week!)

Lisa is someone I have followed for years on Twitter (@LisaJohnson) and was thrilled to finally make her acquaintance at this year’s Fitbloggin’ convention. This Boston gal is just about as nice and down-to-earth as one can be and still be a total badass. You can follow her on her on You Tube here; https://www.youtube.com/user/LisaJohnsonFitness and here is the link for her excellent web site.

Now onto this week’s Vlog post:

What Have the “Mens” Taught Us This Month? Recaps of @MensFitness @MensHealthMag @MensJournal 6

What Are the “Men’s” Teaching Us This Month?

Recaps of Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and Men’s Journal

 Hi Gang!

The September issues are back and I for one could not be happier—(seriously, summer magazines are just not that interesting.) So today I am devoting my recap to three of the top men’s titles and what they to offer is this month. You’re welcome!

Let’s get to this thing!

Novak Djokovic photographed by Richard Phibbs

Novak Djokovic photographed by Richard Phibbs

Men’s Fitness: September 2013

  •  Novak Djokovic: The Serbian tennis pro is on the cover right now and he talks about his lifelong for all kinds of breads and pastas made him feel sluggish and sickly until adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. He says the path to good health is by changing your diet one step at a time.
  • “10 Most Bizarre Fitness Competitions” Have you heard of the “Wee Men” Australian Dwarf Tossing competition or the “Left Rook” Chess Boxing in London? Check out this article for some more unusual competitions.
  • “Your Own Fitness Trend” Men’s Fitness shows how to take bits and pieces of fitness workouts to make your unique routine.
  • “Natural Selection” Meal suggestions that are high in protein and veggies (my favorite!)
  • “10 Steps to an 8-Pack Abs” Can ladies get these? (Not that I would ever put in the time for it but I am just curious.)

You can check out Men’s Fitness: www.mensfitness.com

Tom Brady photographed by Cliff Watts

Tom Brady photographed by Cliff Watts

Men’s Health: September 2013

  • Tom Brady: Of course the New England Patriots quarterback is on the cover of the Fall Fashion issue—he is sexy and married to a supermodel. Duh! (By the way—go Niners!)
  •  “6 Skills Leaders Know” I will give you three that they list: “Evolve Every Day,” “Lean on Your Team” and “Blaze a Trail”
  • “The Medicine Ball Blaster” Trainer Dan John offers ideas to use a medicine ball in your workouts. (Using some of these in my bootcamp classes for sure…)
  • “Weird Body Noises Explained” Men’s Health uncovers the medical reasons why your knees and ankles pop and you have a ringing  in your ear (among other annoying sounds you might be dealing with right now.)
  • “Worst-Face Scenarios” All kinds of tips for getting rid of skin damage. (I didn’t realize men worry about these things!)
  • “8 Secrets Your Hospital Keeps” If you are terrified of hospitals (and I certainly am) this article will make you stay up at night. For example, your doctor’s hands may be filthy and the hospital food could be even worse than fast food. YIKES!!
  • “How to Sell a Miracle” Even more medical news to scare the reader! Quackery still exists in the “medicine” world and too many people are distrustful of “big medicine” causing unnecessary illness. Oy!
  • “A New War on Sugar” Basically humans are hard-wired to love sugar more than is good for us and many of us are getting fat from it. Here are tips for cutting back on the sweet stuff.
  • “Barefoot Running Stumbles” First of all, those”barefoot running” shoes that were all the rage two years ago looked stupid–we agree on that, right? Now it looks as if they cause more harm than good (allegedly.)

Men’s Journal: September 2013

  •  “Style & Design 2013″ We are talking cars, gear, kitchen gadgets, watches, office chairs, and more in the Men’s Journal annual style & design issue. (Men do love their toys, no?)
  • “24-Hour Sports Rumble” The Fox Sports network aims to take down ESPN by adding celebrity hosts (Regis Philbin?) and having a more fun approach to sports. (Um, okay. But they will never top “30 for 30”  in my opinion.)
  • “The Other White Meat” Recipe ideas for my formerly most-hated vegetable—cauliflower. (Dice and cook it in olive oil and garlic, people!)
  • “The People’s Coast” Must go back to Oregon again—the coastline is beautiful and open to the public!
  • “Massacre in the Himalayans” Holy sh*t! This past June ten mountain climbers were killed in the Himalayas by terrorists with their sole survivor, Zhang Jingchuan, left to talk about the effects on the local community.
  • Sonny Rollins: The jazz legend is featured here in an excellent interview.
  • Nathan Plank: The founder and CEO of Under Armour (which makes great gear by the way) talks about his business ethics and bringing jobs to Baltimore.

Check out Men’s Journal online www.MensJournal.com

That’s all she wrote for today folks. Be sure to check back for more recaps soon.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 47 Featuring “My 5 Favorite Things” @Reebok @StephenColbert @paulscheer @katespade 6

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 47

Featuring the BFC “5 Favorite Things”

Someone please justify why I must buy these pumps for myself!

Someone please justify why I must buy these pumps for myself!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This has been a fun week for me where I had the chance to connect with some amazing old friends and see a couple I love FINALLY have their relationship recognized legally (it’s the 21st Century, people!) This all made me want to appreciate how wonderful my August is turning out so far and  this week I want to offer the five things that are making me smile. And here they are:

  1. The Reebok Sublite 2.0 I received in my goodie bag from the Fitness magazine Meet & Tweet NYC. Reebok gave me the sneakers for free and they are not sponsoring this post so I can say what I want about them and what I want to say is these are the best damn sneakers I have worn in MY ENTIRE LIFE! I run in them, cycle, teach boot camp and walk all over in these puppies and they give great support and look pretty damn spiffy. Free plug for you Reebok!
  2. My love for the site www.jezebel.com just continues to grow because not only are they funny, smart ass feminists but they also love animals and offer adorable clips every day. Here is a video of a sexy Italian guy teaching his dog yoga poses. If there is anything cuter on the net please do not tell me—I could not handle it!
  3. Stephen Colbert really knows how to take a setback and turn it into an opportunity. Earlier this week when Daft Punk rudely dropped out of an appearance on his show and Colbert was clearly NOT happy about it. But in the end he took their song “Get Lucky” and made a star-studded video (featuring Jeff Bridges, The Rocketttes, Matt Damon and more) that made me smile so hard my face started to hurt. How lucky are we to be alive watch him at the top of his game?
  4. The ArScheerio Paul Show which features comedian Paul Scheer who recreates old Arsenio Hall Show interviews featuring himself as “ArScheerio Paul” and his comic friends in the parts of past famous guest. For example Will Arnett as “Bill Clinton” and (my favorite) Alison Brie as “Madonna” and Adam Pally as “Rosie O’Donnell”. I remember these interviews the first time around and thinking they were pretty cray for the time. I will embed clips below of the original interview of Rosie and Madonna as it is an incredible time capsule as one woman is at the top of her fame and her new BFF starting to figure out her way (and dodge the “who are you dating” question.)
  5. The Kate Spade shoes I had the pleasure of trying on at a friends wedding after-party (I will explain in the Vlog.) There is no reason for me to get these shoes except that I just really, REALLY want them. (Must resist temptation…)

Anyhoo—here is this week’s Vlog post:

And here is the ArSheerio Hall Show Clip of “Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell”

Now, check out the real interview! (How bitchy is Madonna by the way? I miss this girl.)

That’s all for me today. Hope you are all enjoying your August as well! Smooches!

“Get Lucky” Late Summer 2013 Cycling Playlist: Daft Punk, Imagine Dragons, NIN #workoutplaylist #playlist 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Summer 2013 Get Lucky” (50-minute Ride)

We are sorry Stephen Colbert! Please forgive us!

We are sorry Stephen Colbert! Please forgive us!

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

So…how is your summer coming along? You feeling good? Getting some weekend getaways in? I hope so!

Today I am featuring a fun and frothy playlist to get you through the heat-filled days of August. It begins with THE song summer (IMHO) and ends with a Lindsey Buckingham tune that always makes me want to fall asleep on the beach somewhere under an umbrella without a care in the word.

So let’s get to it, shall we?

  • Get Lucky: Daft Punk (Featuring Pharrell Williams)

Six minutes of mindless fun and a beat that is just too damn catchy. (Wish they were not being so rude to my imaginary boyfriend Stephen Colbert.)

By the way—if you have not seen the “Dublin” version of this video—please enjoy now. (Love my home girl dancing in her Sunday dress and sneakers!)

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

When this song comes on at work I just want to dance all over the place.

  • She Sells Sanctuary: The Cult

I have a bit of metal in me and The Cult is how I get my fix.

  • Youth Without Youth: The Metric

One of my favorite bands of the last few years and love just about everything they do.

  • Born on the Bayou: Creedence Clearwater Revival

This is the perfect song to do a slow, steady climb. People just groove to it. Just awesome!

  • Black Tambourine: Beck

I use this song for out of the saddle sprints at varying lengths of time.

  • Only: Nine Inch Nails

My big 90s crush (Trent Reznor) has a lot of hits with NIN but this one is my favorite.

  • Demons: Imagine Dragons

No idea what it is about Demons that I love so much– but I do.

  • Creep: TLC

VH-1 is planning a movie about TLC this fall and I plan to watch it.

  • Pumped Up Kicks: Foster the People

I love the dark lyrics mixed with a poppy beat.

  • Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen

Get ready to bang your heads, people!

  • Everybody Talks: Neon Trees

One of those “it’s too damn fast” songs that doesn’t make me grumpy.

  • Trouble: Lindsey Buckingham

Lately Lindsey Buckingham has been on Saturday Night Live as kind of a goof but he kicks ass on the guitar.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Elizabeth Banks photographed by James White

Elizabeth Banks photographed by James White

Women’s Health Cover Star for September 2013:

Elizabeth Banks is on the cover of both the front and back of the magazine as this is their annual “Fall Fashion Special.” Whoo hoo!

Elizabeth seems like such a warm and nice person who just happens to be a successful actress. She has been with her husband all of her adult life and they have two boys together under the age of three-wow!

Her next film will be The Hunger Games: Catching Fire which comes out in November and the trailer alone is making me giddy. (My inner 12 year-old is dying to see it!)

The interview in this issue lists “23 intriguing things” about the actress including the fact she has 1.2 million followers on Twitter (@ElizabethBanks,) is a big fan of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and stays slender by splitting  one appetizer and one entrée with her husband when they go out to eat (which completely bums me out.)

Here is a photo of Elizabeth in a New wave-inspired from the back cover.

So what else is in the September issue of Women’s Health

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Is Aspirin the New Wonder Drug” Women’s Health looks into the benefits taking aspirin.
  • “Diet-Friendly Drive Thrus” Not sure I buy the concept of eating anything from a fast food place. (I worked at one when I was 16!)
  • “I Survived A Shipwreck at Sea” Amazing true story about a woman (Kate Suski) who survived being stranded in the ocean for over 14 hours. Yikes!

Overall Grade:

A-! So much here to enjoy though funnily enough the fashion pages were not my favorite this time. Normally I like their style pages. Oh well, maybe next month?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 46 Talking about Forgiveness, “Barbra” and (Not) Getting Old #SweatPink 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 46

Featuring: “She’s Nacho MamaPodcast Shout Out, Learning to Forgive Yourself and

My “GI Jayne” Kickboxing DVD

GI Jayne

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all? Things have been pretty good by me but I have been thinking quite a bit lately on the topic of forgiveness. How, for me, it is so much easier to forgive someone who has hurt me than for me to forgive myself when I make a mistake. Are any of you like that? Do you beat yourself up emotionally when you fail to reach a goal or make a totally dumb error of judgment? Lately I have noticed many of my friends on Twitter and Facebook castigating themselves for bot ordering the “right” thing for lunch or not running long enough even though the weather is nice. Why do we do that?

This past week I made an error of judgment with a client which I could have avoided if I had just asked a question at the beginning versus trying to find the answer on my own (long, boring story.) And honestly—it has bothered me for the last 3 days straight. The only time I feel good about myself completely is when I am teaching and can shut out the voices in my head. Does this sound familiar to any of you? How do you handle it? I would love to get your tips!

Anyhoo—let’s get to the short list of what I am covering on this week’s Vlog:

  • The Power of Margos! Thanks so much to my good friend Margo who included me in her amazing Blog and Podcast and giving a shout to my Vlogs. (I am in such great company by the way!)
  • The Power of Forgetting the Past: My good friend Marrilee Wilson and her story of forgiving a former coworker.
  • Forgiving Myself: My difficulty in forgetting my mess-ups and seeing the same thing in many of my online friends.
  • The Fantastic “Old is the New Fat Talk” post by Miz Fit Online (Carla Birnberg)
  • Buyer & CellarA terrific play that is a fictional account of Barbra Streisand’s home mall. Really!
  • My good friend Alicia of Poise in Parma who helped me with this week’s groovy DVD giveaway.

Here is this week’s Vlog post:

Jayne also has a unique message for participants in their 40s and 50s, “It’s not about how you look, but how you feel.” She considers it her personal goal to help each student incorporate daily fitness into their lives. GIJAYNEFITNESS Kickboxing producer, Christopher Harris explains, “Jayne has the gift of being able to bring people of different fitness levels together as one. Her intensity seems to bring out the best in people, and that’s why we’ve continued to support her and come back for more.”
