Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: A Spooky Halloween Ride #sweatpink

“Halloween” (45-minute Ride)

Boo! Alright you ghosts and goblins—here is my Halloween-themed that I hope you enjoy. I avoided the clichéd stuff like Monster Mash or a “hit from hell” (Hangin’ Tough) and tried to find tunes that are spooky and interesting.

I hope you all have a great week and get tons of candy!

  • Don’t Fear the Reaper: Blue Oyster Cult

Such a great song and who couldn’t use more cowbell in their lives?

  • Disco Inferno: The Trammps

If only because I love the defiant way they spell their name.

  • Psycho Killer: Talking Heads

Everyone loves this song and it has an excellent, consistent beat.

  • Devil Inside: INXS

Remember how hot Michael Hutchence was?

  • Dead Man’s Party: Oingo Boigo

This song always reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield classic Back to School.

  • Hell: Squirrel Nut Zippers

Back in the 90s there was a resurgence of swing music and this band did it pretty damn well.

  • Spooky:  Dusty Springfield

A cool classic by a white lady from England who sounds like a Southern black chanteuse.

  • People Are Strange: The Doors

For some reason I have been meeting people lately who tell me they are not fans of The Doors. Just as with Bowie last week I say– “Well, you are just f***ing wrong!”

  • The Time Warp: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Of course.

  • Werewolves of London: Warren Zevon

Such a talented guy and he wrote so many great songs but he is mainly known for this one which I still think is pretty cool. (The actual werewolf in the video is hilarious by the way.)

  • Thriller: Michael Jackson

The full video for your viewing pleasure.

  • Witchcraft: Frank Sinatra

One of my favorites from Old Blue Eyes!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 58: Featuring @BitchCakes @SparkPeople @TheCoachNicole

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 58

Featuring: Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

(Including Bitch Cakes, Fit Bottomed Girls, Howard & Beth Stern and Oxygen magazine)

Planning a NYC Potluck Brunch (November 2nd!)

and My Review of Spark Activity Tracker

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This past week has been crazy busy for me filled with meetings, teaching classes, going to press events and checking in with old friends visiting NYC. These are the very things that make me happy and I am feeling extra blessed lately. (Thank you all for being a part of my life!)

So today I want to give “shout outs” that are making me happy this week including the planning of my first “NYC Healthy Blogger Brunch” and my review of the Spark Activity Tracker  from  the folks at Spark People. So let’s get to it, shall we?

What Makes a Brooklyn Fit Chick Happy?

  • I was honored to get a signed copy of Sheryl Yvette’s appearance in Weight Watchers magazine. Doesn’t she look fantastic? I first saw Sheryl several years ago during a bike ride where she wore a glamorous outfit (which included high heels) and a pink bike. At the time I was too shy to approach her and tell her about my fandom. It’s such a thrill for me to now say we are social media friends and I can’t wait to find out her next set of adventures. (Go Sheryl!)
  • Sheryl WW 001
  • Getting to meet up with Jenn of Fit Bottomed Girls while she was in New York. Jenn is based in Kansas City and I just admire her commitment to health and fitness and creating a site that makes everyone feel welcome and supported. (Go Jenn!)
  • The North Shore Animal League 2014 Calendar from Howard & Beth Stern which arrived at my place this past week autographed by both of them. Howard took photos of his wife Beth (who is a strong animal right advocate) with various shelter animals with the proceeds going to the North Shore Animal league which is a no-kill shelter based in Long Island, NY. Only $24.95 and tons of cuteness on every page. Great for stocking stuffers!
  • Beth Stern Calendar 001
  • Oh look—its Oxygen magazine’s November issue!!!!!!!! The much-missed Oxygen is back ladies and I could not be happier. (Review of the new issue to come this week!)

Oxygen November Cover 001

NYC Healthy Bloggers Potluck Brunch!

Also, this past week I decided to open my domicile to a Healthy Bloggers Brunch. Soooo—if you are based in NYC and would be free on Saturday, November 2nd at about 1 pm in Brooklyn—be sure to let me know! I am working on getting a couple of sponsors for the goodie bags and will need an accurate head count. Just leave a comment below and I will e-mail the details. Bring a dish and enjoy time with some fellow fit-minded peeps!

My happy home. It will be cleaned up by Saturday!

My happy home. It will be cleaned up by Saturday!

Spark Activity Tracker:

(Quick disclaimer: I was supplied the product free of charge from Spark People and not compensated for this review. The opinions are my own and based on my experience with the item.)

Finally—I received the Spark Activity Tracker a few weeks ago from Coach Nicole Nichols herself (not that I am bragging or anything…) and am in LOVE with it! I have tried different kinds of tracking systems in the past but found them to be too big and clunky to use on an everyday basis.

The Spark Activity Tracker is a combination effort of Spark People (which is the largest online weight-loss and fitness community) with FitLinxx to create this tiny, portable battery operated device that you can attach to your sneaker, bra strap or waist band to track steps, calories burned, distanced achieved and total activity time. Some of its best features include:

  • Waterproof to 100 feet (safe for swimming)
  • No charging required—you simply replace the battery in about six months’ time
  • It automatically figures out the difference between a casual stroll and a hard workout.
  • It syncs automatically via a UB dongle
  • It’s only $59.95 and is available on Spark People’s site as well as on

What else can I say? This a product of great value if you are interested in tracking your fitness results and would be a perfect gift for anyone in your life who loves workout-related gadgets.

Want more? Check out my Vlog post today!

That’s all I have for today. I will be here all week with magazine reviews, workout playlists and giveaways. Y’all come back now, ya hear?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Whole Lotta Love 50-Minute Playlist #sweatpink

“Whole Lotta Love” (50-minute Ride)

 Later Days

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

Are you ready to rock? Do you need some power music to crank up your enthusiasm? Well then today’s list is for you. If nothing else, take the first track listed below and crank it up to 11 and go kick some ass out there!

  • Whole Lotta Love: Led Zeppelin

This is one of those songs that whenever I start a class with it more than one person will shout out “yes!” The mighty Zep will get your butt in gear.

  • Leopard Print Pill-Box Hot: Beck

Beck redid a Bob Dylan for a charity album and managed to make it even better than the original.

  • Radio Song: R.E.M.

OMG—I miss this band!

  • Can You Read My Mind: The Killers

My absolute favorite song from The Killers—it put me in the best mood whenever I hear it.

  • Bit by Bit: Mother Mother

Once again I am falling in love with an Indie Canadian rock band. This song kills when played at full volume!

  • Diamonds : Rhianna

“Shine bright like a diamond!”

  • Paralyzer: Finger Eleven

Do you know the origin of the band name (giggling like a 12 year-old right now…)

  • Came Bach Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

One of the best bands I have ever seen live—ever!

  • Empire State of Mind: Jay-Z & Alicia Keys

  • Ragdoll: Aerosmith

I think this is my favorite of the late 80s Aerosmith (hated the power ballads!)

  • Bohemian Like You: The Dandy Warhols

If you are not familiar with this band check out the 2004 film Dig—one of the best music documentaries I have ever seen.

  • Rock Steady: Frank Turner

One of my students recently asked “who is Aretha Franklin?” I made them download this song first.

  • Year of the Cat: Al Stewart

I love the light piano music in the beginning the then the build to big guitars.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 57 Talking About Guilty Pleasures, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders “Making the Team” (CMT) & Jaybird Wireless Earbuds

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 57

Featuring: Finding a New Guilty Pleasure and Introducing My Super-Groovy Jaybird Wireless Ear Buds Giveaway

You can win these!

You can win these!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am on a bit of a time crunch this week so I am keeping my post short and sweet this week. However, what I am lacking in verbiage I am more than making up for with a fantastic giveaway for one of you lucky readers. Best news of all—this giveaway is open to residents of both United States and Canada—whoo hoo!!

So let me dive into my one big topic I want to discuss today (guilty pleasures) and then I will offer the details for the Jaybird Freedom Sprint Secure Fit Wireless Buds that retail for $129.

It’s been quite the week in news I must say. First we had a fit blogger/trainer who was accused of being a bully by posing with her three young boys and saying “What’s Your Excuse?” in her photo.

THEN Kate Middleton showed off her lean frame three months after giving  birth by swatting around a volleyball (that’s what it is called, right?) in high wedge heels. Honestly, what the hell kind of pressure are we putting on ourselves when images like this keep showing up in the media!

I am sensitive to how women are portrayed in the media and am so grateful for all of my fellow bloggers who write about living healthy lives and not obsessing about thinness or good looks. Which leads me to my guilty pleasure…

“What Makes for a Guilty Pleasure?”

Generally my attitude is whatever makes you happy (and doesn’t hurt anyone else) enjoy it thoroughly and do not worry about what others think. Life is too short! However, we all have a “thing” we like and enjoy but know we probably shouldn’t. That even though it may be harmless—it doesn’t make our life better and we most likely would be much better off without it.

This past week one of my secret favorite shows, The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team (DCC) aired an episode that filled me with sadness and made me finally “break up” with them.

Background: The DCC has been on the air for a few seasons now and basically it is a reality show that follows a group of young women who try out to make the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders team. The stakes are pretty high for these gals. If you make the team you are considered a rock star in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (and to a world of football-loving dudes) and get to travel the world making appearances. But you MUST fit in the uniform. And buy fit—I mean you BETTER be tall and skinny. (Sorry—the DCC coaches say “toned” instead of skinny but we know what they mean.)

I have never been a cheerleader and would always rather be participating in the game than watching on the sidelines.  But I really admire the tenacity of these women to show up for an audition against hundreds of able competitors and dance their hearts out to make it.

This past week focused on a contestant named Vivian who was petite and gorgeous. She could dance like a disco diva and had a smile that can light up a room.  Vivian was also a  fan favorite who was voted into training camp by a legion of online Dallas cowboys devotees even though the overseers of the DCC training camp labeled Vivian as “stumpy” and felt she should lose 8 pounds before being able to properly don the uniform. Honestly folks—I do not get it. This is Vivian (in the center):

How gorgeous is she? I work out every day and I do not have a flat tummy like that! I know the world isn’t fair and the standards for the DCC are very strict but watching Vivian get cut from the squad broke my heart. I think I am going to have to stop following this show.

Sooooo, now I am in need of a new guilty pleasure. What do you watch to make your eye-holes happy and your brain just bubble with delightful non-activity? Send those suggestions my way! (Please!)

And Now My Super-Duper Jaybird Wireless Ear Buds Giveaway:

So are you NOW ready to win some ear buds? This week’s giveaway is a pair of headphones from Jaybird and the contest starts from Sunday, October 20, 2013 and will end Monday, October 28, 2013 at NOON eastern time.

Note—I am NOT being paid by Jaybird to host this contest. This is my gift to you my loyal readers and You Tube audience—you’re welcome!

Here are the details about the winning item:

  • Freedom Sprint is tuned with emphasis on sub-bass, while reducing the listener fatigue ranges of mids and extreme treble. The result, warm thumpy beats that let you crank up the music without experiencing listener fatigue common in extended headphone use during lengthy workout sessions at higher volume levels. Keep your music motivating you, not distracting you. Eliminate listener fatigue.
  • On-ear controls offer quick, confident commands so you can focus and get the most from your workout. Get in – get out.
  • Freedom Sprint offers an enhanced microphone and microphone chamber design for clearer calls.

Got that? Now, in order to win a (United States & Canada only!) you must do the following:

  1. Post a comment below (on this particular blog post).
  2. Tweet out your interest by saying “I want to stay fit with @JayBirdSport Freedom Sprint headphones from @BrooklynFitChik”
  3. Use the hashtag “POWERYOURPASSION”
  4. Subscribe to my You Tube channel here (let me know if you are already subscribed!)

Enter as many times as you like! I will pick the winner next Monday, October 28th at NOON eastern time and contact them directly. Good luck!

Brooklyn Fit Chick “Back It Up” Playlist: Indoor Cycling/Running Playlist #sweatpink

“Back it Up” (50-minute Ride)

The Prodigy

The Prodigy

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

My newest playlist is a mix of styles, tempos and genres that I hope will get you motivated either on the road or the treadmill. Let me know what you think of it!

  • Back It Up: Caro Emerald

The 32 year-old Dutch singer just announced her first pregnancy and will go on tour later in 2014. Congrats Caro!

  • Mother Mary: Foxboro Hot Tubs

This band is a side project for the members of Green Day. Not sure why they didn’t include this on American Idiot but I love this song.

  • Uprising: Muse

I hear these guys kick serious ass live.

  • Supersoaker: Kings of Leon

After a few years of weird stories including a pigeon poop incident the popular band is band with this fast tune.

  • The World I Know: Collective Soul

This song was popular the year I moved to New York and always reminds me of walking around my new neighborhood in wonder.

  • Wake Up Call : Maroon 5

I cannot ignore the charisma of Adam Levine any longer…

  • Times Like These: Foo Fighters

When I am in the mood for sprints the Foos always get my heart pumping.

  • Tusk: Fleetwood Mac
  • If I were to totally change my look it would be to resemble Stevie Nicks just as she appears in this video. Right down to the perm-y hair and baton! (Special shout out to Solid Gold fans as well!)

    • Firestarter: The Prodigy

I saw The Prodigy live and they freakin’ ruled!

    • The Rain: Missy Elliot

“Beep, beep. Who’s got the keys to the jeep? Vroooom.”

    • Award Tour: A Tribe Called Quest

    90s hip hop!

    • Recovery: Frank Turner

I am in love with this song. Love, love, love.

    • What Goes Around: Justin Timberlake

    And then we cool down….

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 56: Talking about Jody @Truth2BeingFit, “Loser Gurl” and a Review of “The Vegucation of Robin” #sweatpink

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 56

Featuring: Jody of “Truth 2 Being Fit,” Dealing With Internet Trolls, Teen Bullying,

Plus: A Review of The Vegucation of Robin by Robin “Ophelia” Quivers

    Robin Quivers Book

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you fine people doing today? As I type this Blog post it is Sunday morning and I am staving off a slight hangover. Normally I teach three back-to-back classes at this time but last night I celebrated a weeeee bit too much at my friends Christina & Tom’s wedding (kudos kids!) So with the quiet of my apartment and the promise of scrambled eggs & bacon for brunch in my future I am writing out my weekly post and getting ready to film my Vlog. You’re welcome!

So let me get through a bit of housekeeping before we dive into today’s segment.

Affordable Care Act: I am STILL trying to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. Oy vey! I managed to create a Login the first day but have not been able to get on to the site and actually sign up for anything. This is most frustrating but I will remain optimistic and persistent. And, of course, I will take you along the journey with me. (Have any of you been able to sign up yet?)

Spark People Activity Tracker: I was asked by none other than Miss Nicole Nichols herself to try out the new Spark people Activity Tracker and I have to admit that I cannot figure out how to get it to sync with my computer. Doh! If any of you can help me –please let me know. I want to review for next week! (Thanks in advance!)

Now on to This Week’s Vlog Items:

Truth 2 Being Fit: If you are not familiar with the amazing Jody of the Truth 2 Being Fit Blog you should check her out now. Jody is a super fit lady in her 50s who has a build that would put most 20-somethings to shame! Jody believes in eating healthy and taking care of yourself every single day and I am a big fan of her Twitter feed and her Instagram photos “Truth2BeingFit.” Jody had two exceptionally great posts lately that I wanted to share with you:

    • Are You Fat? Is This Fat?: Jody takes a look at internet trolls and their messed up comments that they leave on posts through Twitter and Instagram
    • Behind Closed Doors: Aren’t you sick and tired of people blaring out their health declarations over the Internet on how they never eat “ANYTHING BUT REAL FOOD” or that they “CRUSH EVER EXCUSE NOT TO WORKOUT EVERY SINGLE DAY.” There is a fine line between being encouraging and condescending. Between offering inspiration and being a braggart. None of us are perfect behind closed doors and no one assumes we are so why the pretense? Why make people feel bad because they failed to “crush” an excuse? Anyhoo—read this post and tell me what you think!

Teen Blogger Ally Del Monte. Wowza! This post from Ally Del Monte (aka “Loser Gurl”) broke my heart. Ally has been dealing with taunts and awful remarks about her weight for years (she has Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis) but a few weeks ago her world took a very dark turn when I friend of her attempted suicide.  Ally Blogs and Vlogs about her experience here plus you can read more about this remarkable woman with this feature on her from (We need more Ally’s in the world!)

    And Lastly:

My Review of “The Vegucation of Robin” by Robin Quivers (The Howard Stern Show.)

Heavy sigh—where do I begin? I guess at the beginning. About twenty years ago “The Howard Stern Show” was introduced to the Bay Area (where I went to school) and I have been listening to Howard, Robin, Fred, Baba Booey and the rest of the gang most weekday mornings ever since. My favorite segment of the show is “The News” where Howard and Robin talk about what is happening in the world and generally goof on dumb celebrities, corrupt politicians and the everyday silliness of life.

I have to say that as much I as I adore Robin and would not want to listen to the show without her—she loves to spout off about her latest New Age findings that have absolutely NOTHING to do with science or reality. Over the years I have heard her espouse the medical wonders of coffee enemas, the Master Cleanse, psychic shaman in foreign lands and “detoxing.” And honestly, my attitude is if it makes you feel better than more power to you. But do no assume all people will have the same results following your plan.

Recently Robin dealt with an incredibly scary cancer scare (you can read about it here) and had to work remotely from home for over a year while she was attended to by  the expert staff at Memorial Sloan Kettering. (Trust me—if you get cancer—that is where you want to be treated. They are simply the best.)

Thankfully she is now in remission but it coincides with the release of her book The Vegucation of Robin: How Real Food Saved My Life. This is a book she has planned for years and it speaks to her belief (at the time) in the Vegan lifestyle and all of the recipes contained within.

Well, here are a few of my problems with the book:

    • She promotes colonics which has absolutely NO HEALTH BENEFITS WHATSOEVER. Honestly, after all of these years she is still promoting this crap (pardon the pun.) If she was so clean and detoxified from it—then why did she get cancer?
    • Her complete mistrust of doctors and “Western Medicine” when the very reason she is alive is because Howard made her see cancer specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The woman is a former nurse but did not visit with a gynecologist for several years. A regular checkup might have caught the cancer much sooner had she bothered to take care of herself sensibly.
    •  She still promotes the horrible, awful, contemptible “Master Cleanse” which basically starves the body of nutrients for weeks and then encourages binge eating once you are “detoxified.” This stuff is utter f***ing nonsense and she knows it but is too proud to say she was wrong. (Bad advice that can exasperate an eating disorder, Robin!)
    • Robin does not eat many of the recipes in her book because she now follows and grain-free, soy-free and fruit-free diet on top of being a vegan. (Honestly—if you do not completely follow the lifestyle contained in the pages you should not promote the book.)

Whew—that is a lot for me to type out today. Check out my Vlog below for a little more about my thoughts this week:

Thank you all as always for taking the time to listen to me. And let me know your thoughts about body image, celebrity

    “Should I Try CrossFit?”

The super popular program is the bane of my Instagram account (how people can post more photos of their WODs than I do of my cats is startling) but I must admit I am curious to give them a whirl. So if you are in the market to try out CrossFit as well—check out this issue of Health first.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

    • “Grab it Now…Winter Squash” Yes, please! (Anyone want to cook my dinner tonight?)
    • “What Kind of Ager Are You?” I love my beauty stories and this one was of big interest to me. (I am a “splotcher” by the way.”)
    • “Your Healthy Fall Gardening Guide” If I didn’t possess a black thumb and actually had a yard I would be ALL over this. (Show of hands for those who want to plant a garden for me?)
    • “Breast Cancer Breakthroughs” October is breast cancer awareness month so all of the women’s magazines have features about this horrible disease. (Keep hopeful for a cure someday!)
