Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Thanksgiving Big Bucket of Joy Ride 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Thank You Ride” (55-minute Ride)

thanksgiving

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist honors everything I love about the Thanksgiving holiday—mainly as a day to remember to be thankful, joyous and celebrate your friends & family. I put this list together with the hope it makes people feel happy. So pass the turkey and the white wine this way as we take a look at my top Thanksgiving-inspired tunes.

I included a photo of my favorite Thanksgiving movie above Planes, Trains and Automobiles but let me be clear—the music from that film is the WORST. Really the most terrible, awful, synthesizer-dependent soundtrack of all time!

  • Let the Day Begin: The Call

I love to begin with sweet & lovely song and it seems to get the ride off in a happy mood. This one always puts the class in a good mood.

  • Walking on Sunshine: Katrina & the Waves

This tune makes everyone bop their heads along to the beat. It also has one of those “damn, ain’t it great to be alive?” moods to it.

  • Thank You (Fallentin Be Mice Self): Sly & the Family Stone

The formal “thank you” songs begin here and it is super funk-ay.

  • Black Friday: Steely Dan

Because the crazy shopping begins on Friday (or on Thursday evening for some of those retail freaks out there.)

  • Hey Ya: Outkast

If there was ever song created to make people smile and feel good—this is the one.

  • What a Wonderful World: Joey Ramone

This is probably my favorite version of one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • Praise You:  Fatboy Slim

Praise, celebration, fun times! This song has it and a catchy beat that I like to use for climbs.

  • Family Affair: Mary J. Blige

Let’s celebrate like a functional family, people! (They do exist—right?)

  • I Want to Celebrate: Rare Earth

I use this one for sprint and high intensity intervals.

  • I Thank You: ZZ Top

There is something wrong with you if you can’t have a little fun with this my boys with the beards. Very naughty and nice at the same time!

  • Friends: Led Zeppelin

One of the nice things about being the teacher is that I can put together any playlist I want. And that means I can include this little gem from Led Zeppelin 3.

  • Lovely Day: Bill Withers

The man holds the last note for over a minute people! What is better than that? (Sorry but no video is available of this tune!!!)

  • It’s a Good Day: Peggy Lee

Not sure why this song has been stuck in my head lately but I figured this was a good of a time as any to include it in my class.

  • Thank You: Dido

What is Dido up to these days? I really loved this album.

  • Thank You: Tory Amos

This is such a cool version of another favorite Led Zeppelin tune.

That’s all I have today folks. Please, please know about some of your favorite songs. I am always looking for good tunes!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 62: Introverts vs Extroverts plus My Mophie Juice Pack Giveaway! 13

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 62

Featuring: The Battle between Introverts & Extroverts

Plus: The Brooklyn Fit Chick Mophie “Juice Pack Plus” Giveaway (Not Sponosred!)

You can win a Mophie Juice Pack from this introvert!

You can win a Mophie Juice Pack from this introvert!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Its Thanksgiving week and I am feeling more than a little ready to get some rest and not work so much. How about all of you? So in that lazy spirit I want to touch off on a topic that has been completely haunting me lately and would love to get your feedback on it.

Plus—I accidently bought the wrong version of a Mophie Juice Pack (http://www.mophie.com/search?q=juice+pack&gclid=CP6ijYbe-7oCFbFxOgodqgwAFA) that fits an iPhone 5 and will be giving one away this week rather than returning it because I love you all so much. You’re welcome!

But before I get to the giveaway—let’s discuss the difference between introverts and extroverts.

As long as I can recall I have felt like an introvert, not shy or afraid to meet people, but rather someone who is just as happy alone as I am within a group of freinds. The problem is that for most of life people have described me as “outgoing,’ “energetic” and (my least favorite word in the word) “perky.” (If you want to get on my bad side–try using that word in front of me! Grr!) So I can come across as outgoing and always the life of the party when that is not me at all.

It’s true that I can meet people rather easily and am a bit of a ham when I am  the center of attention. Teaching fulfills that need for people to notice me and listen to what I have to say.

However—I am not made of an everlasting energy source. At some point with every good time in my life (great parties, fun classes, a concert I waited months to attend, incredible vacations, etc.) there is a moment where my mind says “okay, that’ll do” and I need to leave. Like I REALLY, REALLY NEED TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND RETREAT.

It feels imperative and I can’t ignore my inner voice when it happens. My brain starts to shut down and my vision weakens. My back, feet and head start to hurt and I can’t focus on anything relevant in front of me. I will yawn in the middle of a friend telling me an intense story or will just start playing with my iPhone on the couch rather than seek out one more conversation.

Sure there have been some occasions that staying longer and riding it out to talk to one more person at the holiday party or stay for just one more song at the all-day music festival have brought me incredible joy.

But more often than not when I force myself past my internal energy gauge it just wears me out. The light goes out in my head and I am running on fumes. My patience wears thin and I begin to resent people for not leaving me alone.

Why am I like this? Who the hell knows? I moved every few years growing up and was constantly meeting new people and having to navigate the social rules in each new school I attended. It was very hard at times and I was angry about it for years but I now honestly think it taught me to become more outgoing.

To overcome my introverted nature and learn how to reach out to others for companionship.

I can make new acquaintances feel like my oldest friend in the world in just a few minutes and can be “on” very quickly (and brightly) when I have to. Not everyone can do that. And I am not lying or being deceptive when I turn on the charm. If I say “I like you” understand that I really DO like you. (I would rather sit by myself than waste time on a jerk.)

Five years ago I began my life as a group fitness instructor and can say honestly that I am rarely nervous before getting up in front of a group of students. Even when I am subbing—there is no fear of failure. When people tell me they are too shy to teach I have NO idea what they are talking about. What’s there to be afraid of? Most folks are easy to entertain.

Anyhoo—several months ago I attended the annual Fitbloggin conference and had a chance to chit chat with Carla B. who is the creator of www.mizfitonline.com and is a big inspiration for me. Carla wrote a really amazing post about her reputation as a “ninja” who just disappears and reappears from the conference. Check it out here: I’ve Declared Introvert Status.

As soon as I read this my first thought was “wow—that’s me, exactly!”

Then—a few months later my Fitbloggin roomie Christine A. aka Dubya Wife; aka sister from another mister posted on her Facebook page how she identified herself as an extrovert and wished people would understand her point of view better. I can’t find the exact link she used on her Blog but here is a pretty great post from BuzzFeed: 25 Frustrating Things About Being An Extrovert. It has really rocked my world and opened my eyes to another way of living.

It never occurred to me that people who need to be around others all of the time can feel pain when rejected. I assumed extroverts just have nonstop energy and could care less about whether or not they are “draining” to other people. I now know that extroverts aren’t just “need machines” but people who are honestly energized (seemingly non-stop) from the company of others. I want to take this moment to apologize to all of my extroverted friends & family for not understanding you better.

You weren’t trying to micromanage or judge me—you just wanted me to hang out a little longer. To spend more time chatting on the phone about nonsense or dance to one more goofy song at the party and I promise to try to do both more often.

I am leaving you with this fantastic article from Psychology Today online: The Introverts Corner. If you have a minute feel free to leave a comment below and let me know your thoughts on the great Introverts vs. Extroverts debate.

Now on to this week’s Vlog & My Groovy Giveaway!!

So let’s say you have an iPhone 5 and want your battery to last longer—stay tuned for my completely unsponsored, I am paying for this rad giveaway.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed Ride” 9

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed” (50-minute Ride)

RIP

RIP

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

I have two new online stations that have been rocking my world lately and helping me add to my playlists. Here they are:

  • WLIR online plays an amazing selection of alternative music from the last 30 years. Everything from the B-52s to Lorde to Depeche Mode. Now, since this is a free online station they get a little too crowded sometimes and you can’t log on. But if you, definitely try them out!
  • The Peak in Vancouver plays amazing alternative music plus tons of Canadian bands which are new to me and I am finding I really love.

Got that? So let’s get into to today’s playlist which consists of some old and new tunes to get you in the mood to run, cycle and workout harder. Let’s go!

  • Big Blue Wave: Hey Ocean!

Hey Ocean! Is a Canadian band that released this fun, frothy tune  last year. Love opening up with it in my classes.

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

One of my students asked me recently “who wrote that Pulp Fiction smash up song?” It took me a minute to figure out what she was talking about!

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

I just lerve this song to pieces.

  • Breathing Underwater: Metric

I have said the before but I need to state again how much I regret not seeing this band when they played in New York last year. Will not make that same mistake again!

  • Rebellion: Arcade Fire

This is one of the best songs ever to climb to or make yourself work harder. It’s fantastic!

  • Rebel Yell: Billy Idol

OMG this is just the greatest song in the world. How does it get better than “in the midnight hour—she cried more, more, MORE!”

  • American Psyco: Treble Charger

Yet another Canadian band I was unaware of until The Peak!

  • Family Affair: Mary J. Blige

I am dedicating this one to my friend Stacy who introduced me to badass Mary J.

  • Spaceman: The Killers

I like to perform high intensity sprints to this song.

  • Simple Life: Elton John

This is one of Elton’s lesser known 90s tunes but I love it for long climbs and  the lyrics are really inspiring.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sarah

Hell yeah, I say!

  • Walk on the Wild Side: Lou Reed

This is one of those pieces of culture that inspired me to move to New York. I spent my whole life in the boring ‘burbs and I was ready to indeed walk on the wild side. (RIP Lou Reed. This city will be much less interesting without you in it.)

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 61: “Ten Things You Don’t Know About Me” and my “Barre Conditioning” DVD Giveaway 33

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Episode 60

Featuring: My New Facebook Fan Page, “10 Things You Don’t Know About Me”

& My Barre Conditioning Workout DVD Giveaway

Barre Conditioning--Enter to Win this DVD!

Barre Conditioning–Enter to Win this DVD!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week I am following a Facebook meme—“10 Things You Don’t Know About Me” which I have been witnessing the last few days. I absolutely LOVE these lists and do enjoy learning more about my friends by following them so I am bringing that today. Plus, I have a super great DVD giveaway today so let’s get right to it!

First, my news for the week:

  • I just want to remind you that I have finally put together a Facebook fan page and would LOVE it if you would “like” the page (Here is the Link) Merci in advance!
    • Very soon I will be blogging for the brand-new website SweatGuru and could not be more thrilled about this. I will post more details of this soon!

“10 Things You May Not Know About Me”

After enjoying other people’s “10 Things you May Not Know About Me” lists I decided to try one of my own. Hope you like it but do not expect anyone to agree with me!

  1. When I graduated from college (San Jose State!) I took the summer off and went backpacking through Europe. It was the best adventure ever.
  2. I have a hard time switching channels if either of the first two Godfather movies, the first two (real) Star Wars films or Baby Boom is on TV. They are all my visual crack and I cannot seem to quit them no matter how many times I have seen them.
  3. When I was 7 years old I had a bike accident and managed to bite through my tongue. (I still have that scar.)
  4. When I was 17 I sliced the tip off of my right pointer finger while working at a fast food joint. (It grew back, like a starfish!)
  5. I have a tattoo of a rosebud on my hip.
  6. Artichokes make me uncomfortable. Just looking at them gives me the willies.
  7. I have never seen one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, How I Met Your Mother or The Big Bang Theory.
  8. I have never seen from beginning to the end any of these films: Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Mean Girls, The Sound of Music or Love, Actually.
  9. Whenever I hear a Bon Jovi or Sheryl Crow song I have to change the channel. Just do NOT like either of their music. It’s not personal.
  10. I think the following things are overrated: Madonna, Apple Computers, salmon, The Replacements and “Spring” as a season. I mean, come on—every other season is far more interesting and fun!

Now on to this week’s Vlog!

Soooo,  are you interested in learning more about the DVD? Here you go! (By the way, the DVD is being provided to me by Anchor Bay Entertainment but I am not being compensated for this placement.)

Develop the Grace of a Dancer, the Strength of an Athlete and a Body That Won’t Quit with the New

“ELEMENT: BARRE CONDITIONING” DVD

Beverly Hills, CA – Barre workouts are among the hottest fitness trend and the new ”Element: Barre Conditioning” DVD brings that experience home using an ordinary chair to take the place of a barre. With two 30-minute workouts on one DVD, barre3® founder Sadie Lincoln gives the moves and the tips on form that will bring about deep changes in the muscles. The results are strength without bulk—the look of a dancer without a single ballet lesson. Filmed in a picturesque garden overlooking the ocean, it’s a perfect ‘me-time’ moment for anyone to indulge their body and mind for the better. Available on Amazon and in stores beginning December 3 2013, it will have a suggested retail price of $14.98, less than the price of a single barre class!

Sadie Lincoln teaches her unique three-pronged approach to women all over the world. It evolves the traditional dancer’s workout by combining the grace of the ballet barre with the mindfulness of yoga and the strength of Pilates for long, lean results in minimal time.  When Lincoln says to move the leg “just an inch,” one quickly learns that’s all it takes to bring on the muscle shakes. In barre work, small moves bring big results. Lincoln offers a steady stream of form checks to keep the body aligned to reap the maximum benefits.  The DVD offers a Burn & Firm program designed to tone the entire body while raising the heart rate. Starting with isometric conditioning using small, controlled movements, it layers on exercises with larger ranges of motion. It flows and builds heat.  It boosts stamina, energy and sculpts that dancer’s physique.  The Lengthen & Strengthen workout is a dynamic combination of standing moves and floor work. The goal is always a balanced body; strong and lean.

Sadie Lincoln is a renowned wellness expert, media personality and founder of barre3. From her flagship studio in Portland, Oregon, Sadie has created a unique style of whole-health fitness classes combining the disciplines of ballet barre work, Pilates and yoga. Her modern approach offers serious results, accessible programs and inspiration for balanced living. Lincoln has a master’s degree in education from William & Mary College. She has been teaching fitness for over 20 years.  She is married with two school age children.

Check out a clip of Barre Conditioning here:

Got that? Now, in order to win a copy of this DVD (Continental U.S. only!) you must do the following:

What Did We Learn This Month? @Shape_Magazine Kate Hudson on the Cover 5

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Shape: November 2013

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Shape Cover Star for November:

A friend of a friend of mine met Kate Hudson once a few years before her breakout performance in the Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous and said Kate was absolutely the sweetest, most down-to-earth person ever.  I always think about that when I read interviews with the actress as she seems like she would be a cool, chill BFF.

Kate is the mother of two young boys, engaged to singer Matt Bellamy of Muse and has her own workout line Fabletics hitting the market. Meaning she doesn’t exactly have all of the time in the world to work out. Luckily the actress has a dancing background and fits in as much Pilates as she can into her busy schedule.

“Drop the Weights”

You don’t need a set of dumbbells to work your muscles—try some of these moves from trainer Jessica Rucker.

Workout of the month 001

“Splash & Dash”

Water-based running is easier on your joints while also providing excellent cardio exercise. So if you have access to a pool—check out this workout plan designed by Bernard Baski.

 “Raise the Barre”

A NYC-based ballerina (Mary Helen Bowers) teaches Ballet Beautiful and shows how to perform a perfect “arabesque lift” and “swan arms” in this feature.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “1-Move/3-Ways Push-Up” Shape top trainer Jay Cardiello shows how to “perfect and build upon” your bridge.
  • “Flu Shot Excuses–Busted” Everyone—please get your flu shots!
  • “Dream it, Do it…” One of my big, big goals in life is to master the yoga “Crow” pose and it is just one of the fitness goals mentioned in this article that you can master with the right kind of practice.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 60: My New Facebook Fan Page, “Man-Splaining” The Smiths & Da Vinci Body Board Giveaway! 5

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 60

Featuring: My New Facebook Fan Page, “Man-Splaining Morrissey & Partnering with Comeback Momma

For the Da Vinci Body Board Giveaway

 davinci-homepage-hero-v2

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So this week I am a little cramped for time and need to just get out a couple of things before I give you the sexy deets about my first partnership with my good friend at Comeback Momma. This giveaway is worth $400 and will rock your socks off! But first a little housekeeping and a quick nonsensical story about a clueless hipster, cash register dude who tried to explain The Smiths to me at Trader Joe’s this past week. (Son—I have been listening to Mope Rock since before your parents even met!)

First, the fun news of the week:

  • I finally have a Facebook Fan Page—whoo hoo! Here is the Link please, pretty please with sugar lumps on top will you follow me (or rather, “like” my page?) It will make me so happy to have you all join me there. (Big kadooz to my friend Mariette at Namaste Mari for helping me get my crap together with this project!)

“Man-splaining Morrissey”

I talk about this more in this week’s Vlog but recently a cashier at Trader Joe’s engaged me in a very awkward conversation. He was singing the lyrics while attempting to explain to me the “irony” inherent in The Smiths song “Happy Unbirthday.”  I am so not kidding about this.

To give you some context I am clearly MUCH older than the kid at Trader Joe’s and The Smiths and Morrissey are more from my generation so why did he bring up the subject in the first place and felt the need to explain the lyrics to me? It was just a weird exchange. Here is The Smith “Happy Unbirthday” if you have no idea what on earth I am talking about but feel like getting bummed out for a few minutes.

Anyhoo—on to the giveaway! I am really happy to be a part of such a cool, freaking awesome giveaway—the Da Vinci Body Board which retails for $400. All of the details are below my signature and the giveaway will be live from Monday. November 11th – Sunday, December 1st and I wish you all the best of luck.

Now on to this week’s Vlog!

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Padma Lakshmi

The impossibly stunning host of Bravo’s Top Chef graces the cover of the November/December issue and she gives fitness the inside dirt on her dining career. While filming episodes of the top-rated culinary series the former model admits that all of the sampling and tasting can cause her to gain 15 pounds per season. So how does she take it off when filming is done? She follows a clean diet meaning “no meats, no sweets, no alcohol, no cheese, no fried foods, no wheat.”

Padma also talks about staying fit for her three year-old daughter and shares her own recipe for spinach and plum salad. (Nom nom!)

“Shortcut to a Sexy Back”

The very blonde and very shimmery Tracy Anderson (trainer of Gwyneth Paltrow among other glamazons) offers this pretty cool workout to help get your back and rear get in shape. (Be prepared to use light weights and do high reps!)

“Go With the Flow”

Celebrity trainer Brett Hoebel (The Biggest Loser, Season 11) is a big fan of the Brazilian martial art Capoeira (I only know that from interviewing him for Fit Bottomed Girls!) Here he offers slight adjustments to those very dance-y/boxer-y moves to help get you in fighting shape.

Go With the Flow 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Outrun Danger” Yikes! Be careful people! You can be a top athlete (like triathlete Jenny Fletcher featured in this story) and have blood clot issues. Here we get tips on the symptoms of blood clots and how to prevent them.
  • “Pay Fit Forward” Awwww, these stories of fit women inspiring one another to get healthy made me really happy.
  • “Rise and Shine!” One year ago I committed to getting more sleep every night and it has changed my life. Fitness offers their own tips and advice on how to get a few more ZZZ’s.

Hi Gang!

How would you like to win a month of delicious, nutritious meals for FREE? The folks at BistroMD are compensating me for the sponsorship of this giveaway and they will be picking the ultimate winner. I want to wish you all the best of luck in advance! (Continental U.S. only, please!)

First, what is the bistroMD meal plan and what does it normally coast?

BistroMD makes it easy to bring the meals from the 17 Day Diet to your table. The 17 Day Diet Meal Plan provides you with convenient, weekly delivery of delicious physician-designed, chef-prepared meals. You will receive 7 days of breakfasts, lunches and dinners for about $26.00 a day. That’s less than the cost of one dinner in a fine restaurant! The 17 Day Diet Meal Plan by bistroMD will provide you with 21 meals for less than $185.00 a week – which includes shipping. No more cooking, no counting and no cleaning.
