What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

January 2014

Evangeline Lilly photographed by Peggy Sirota

Women’s Health Cover Star for January 2014:

Evangeline Lilly who is featured in the new Hobbit movie but will always be Kate from Lost as far as I am concerned. Evangeline was recently on the Conan O’Brien show to complain about the cover line “best butt ever.”

In this interview the actress talks about being a mom to son Kahekili (in Hawaiian his name stands for “thunder”) and how she prefers to blend in with the crowd rather than seek the Hollywood spotlight.

In her downtime she prefers to workout to old-school Jane Fonda moves rather than trendy new exercises and feels passionately that women should embrace a healthy lifestyle versus struggling to get skinny.

So what else is in the January issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “The One-Dumbbell Solution”

Craig Ballentyne of Turbulence Training offers this workout that requires only one dumbbell to get a good workout in just 15 minutes time.

  • “Pump Up You Power Center” Women’s Health partnered with Weekend Today to find out much women know about the importance of heart health. Spoiler—we need to learn more!
  • “Find the Winner’s Edge” The Olympics are just around the corner and here we get to meet some of our upcoming participants.
  •  “I Survived Being Trapped in a Fire” Women’s Health tells us this true story from Casey Copenhaver who survived a fire in her home. Yikes!

Brooklyn Fit Chick “Top Workout Songs of 2013” (Plus, A Few Stinkers!) #playlist #sweatpink 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S “Best of 2013”

Top 14 Workout Songs from 2013

(Plus, A Few Stinkers…)

Daft PunkjVampireWeekendkaty-perry-roar-promo-header-600x450

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s end of the year time and I am ready to look back on the “Best of’ 2013″ and the songs I most frequently played in my classes (I teach spin, core training and boot camp by the way.) Enjoy!

Also included a few tunes that I just could not get on board with this year at ALL. Let me know what you think!

  • Unbelievers: Vampire Weekend

This is one of those songs that always made me smile when it came on the radio. They are also from Brooklyn which is pretty damn cool!

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

This has everything that would normally drive me crazy in a dance song (cheesy lyrics, weird “voice” work, droning beats) but dammit I just love it to death. Come & Get It brings out the giddy 15 year-old in me and I proudly put it on my “Best of” list.

  • Came Back Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

So happy these guys are back and this particular song is so freakin’ motivating when you want to work harder and sprint faster. Get it now!

  • Supersoaker: Kings of Leon

I love this band because they know how to write hard-driving songs without being too “heavy” or dark. This is one of those tunes that will help you keep a steady pace.

  • Recovery: Frank Turner

Frank Turner has a fun, sexy British accent that he uses well in this happy, boppy song.

  • If So: Atlas Genius

If you are not familiar with Atlas Genius—they are an Australian pop rock band and they write some catchy tunes and this chipper number had me from the first note.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & the Tantrums

Fitz & the Tantrums have recorded some of the most fun and bounciest songs I have ever heard in my life and this one in particular gave me the “happies.”

  • Royals: Lorde

I know some people are having Royals fatigue but I will never forget the first time I heard this song and how much it just caught my attention.

  • Roar: Katy Perry

This is NOT my favorite video (cheesy McCheese, geez Louise!) However, listening to Roar always makes me want to be a teenager again so I can dance around my bedroom and sing along to this anthem.

  • Timeless: The Airborne Toxic Event

Sure it is a tad overwrought and earnest but so the hell what? It’s a great song and perfect for either a steady climb or a cool down.

  • Get Lucky: Daft Punk (Featuring Pharrell Williams)

Six minutes of mindless fun and a beat that is just so damn catchy. (Wish they were not being so rude to my imaginary boyfriend Stephen Colbert.)

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

I included this one from The Sheepdogs in three different playlists this year because I lerve it so darn much. Go Canada!

  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark: Fall Out Boy

I never thought I would see the day this band appeared on my iPod but this song kicks butt!

  • Thrift Shop: Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis

The version full of cursing makes my heart soar. Love you Mackelmore!

And now my picks for the “4 Stinkers of 2013″

  • Blurred Lines: Robin Thicke

Okay—yes, the song is insanely catchy and I did include it for one of my playlists this past year. However, after listening to Robin Thicke being interviewed on The Howard Stern Show I realize this guy is a total sexist dunce and he does not deserve a second of my time. (And Blurred Lines sounds like a Marvin Gaye rip-off!)

  • Applause: Lady Gaga

I happen to love Lady Gaga and will defend her to anyone who dares to speak in a negative way about her. (So what if she is pretentious? The woman is a gifted, national treasure!) However, this song just did nothing for me. Blah, boring, snooze. (Sorry Gaga! The rest of the album is fantastic!)

  • Work B***H: Britney Spears

The b-word has been abused way too often in music lately (honestly, sometimes I would rather hear the c-word instead!)  I reject this lame offering from Britney Jean not only for that but also for the horrible monotonous beat that made me want to punch a kitten. (And I am a crazy cat lady!)

  • Bound 2: Kanye West

Oof—this one is just indefensible. (But the “alternate” version is a gift from the comedy gods.)

That’s all I have for now. Let me know your best/worst for 2013. Also, what music are you looking forward to in 2014? Bring it!

Until next time…

Get Fit in Six Weeks, Stay Fit for Life with Cindy Whitmarsh’s New U.F.I.T. Weight Loss Program!

SAN DIEGO, CA –Fitness and sports nutrition expert Cindy Whitmarsh has trained everyone from professional athletes to new moms. Her new U.F.I.T. weight loss program asks women to give her six weeks, one minute at a time, for results that will last a lifetime. The three Ultra Focused Interval Training DVDs each include two 20-minute workouts. Each workout is made up of one, two or three minute intervals, alternating cardio and toning. The moves are athletic and uncomplicated. What is U.F.I.T. Training? It’s an intense interval training method consisting of targeted intervals to turn any body into a calorie-burning machine while building a sleek, toned physique! Since no workouts can beat what one eats, the complete downloadable U.F.IT. package ($39.95) also includes a meal plan and a workout calendar. Each DVD is available on line and sells for $14.95 ($39.95 set) http://cindywhitmarshfitness.com. Everything (including meal plan $19.95 and workout calendar $9.95) is available individually or as complete set.

The three DVDs are:

U.F.I.T. Ultra Burn – Calorie Crushing Cardio and Sculpt & Stretch

U.F.I.T.  Ultra Lean – Upper Body Bliss and Lower Body Blast

U.F.I.T Ultra Tight – Hard Body and 6 Pack Abs

Hand weights are used. Modifications are offered for beginners. One can expect sweat will pour but that’s what it takes to make lasting, noticeable changes.

The workout calendar included in the complete set makes it easy to know which workout to do each day. For the first two weeks, one only has to commit to twenty minutes for six consecutive days.

The meal plan includes a first week jump start, grocery list, advice on supplements, eating on the go and more. Week one switches the body into an accelerated change mode. From there it moves into a plan designed to help anyone stay on track to be fit, maintain lean muscle and live healthier. Three meals and two snacks daily provide approximately 1250 calories each day for woman and 1750 for men. Each meal aims for a ratio of 30% protein, 50% carbohydrates and 20% fat.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Vampire Weekend, Kanye West, Fatboy Slim, K-Os, Metric & More 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Unbelievers Ride” (50-minute Ride)

Yup, this is what rock stars look like now.

Yup, this is what rock stars look like now.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week’s playlist features a variety of beats and genres that will get your heart pumping and help motivate you to work harder, run faster and spin a little longer. (Or just get out of your own head and get your butt moving!)

Do me a favor? Let me know what you think and please tell me what is on your workout playlist these days.

First up…

  • Unbelievers: Vampire Weekend

I don’t always agree with rock critics on what I “should” love but this is one of those rare Brooklyn bands that are actually as good as their press indicates. (Is that throwing shade? I don’t mean to!)

  • Let’s Fall in Love: Mother Mother

This comes from a Canadian group that I am rather fond of and think should get famous here in the States right away. (The video is a little disturbing to some people so be warned there is a message about gender violence going on.)

  • My Body: Young the Giant

I admit to not being too familiar with Young the Giant but I love this song and think it sounds great when played really loud during class.

  • Locked out of Heaven: Bruno Mars

Whenever I play this in class my students start to bop their heads to the beat. It’s so damn adorable.

  • Weapon of Choice: Fatboy Slim

A good song that has the MOST amazing video ever attached to it as well—big win for all!

  • Butterfly: Crazy Town

I feel terrible the lead singer Shifty Shellshock has had his troubles (and especially having them exploited by the fame vampire Dr. Drew) and I hope he gets another chance to come up with a cool single.

  • Synthetica: Metric

One of my favorite bands is almost always on my playlists. Because they rock so damn hard!

  • Walk Away: James Gang

It is absolutely worth going to see The Eagles because you have the chance to hear a cool Joe Walsh tune or two. (Like this one!)

  • Music: Madonna

I always thought this video was trashy (even with a hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen playing da Ali G.) but I still dig doing sprints to this one from Madonna.

  • Crabbuckit: K-Os

This is just a really fun song, that’s it.

  • Seven Nation Army: The White Stripes

Jack White is one nutty dude but I am starting to find him attractive. Hmm…

  • Stronger: Kanye West

Okay, yes—this guy has an ego the size of New Jersey and is childish. But he has some good grooves in him and this song makes me want to work out harder.

  • Wish You Were Here: Radiohead

One of my favorite songs of all time and this cover is pretty damn terrific.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Women’s Health Cover Star for December 2013:

Drew Barrymore is on the cover and being her usual, lovely self. (One of my favorite movies of all time is the first Charlie’s Angels—a classic!)

Her wild and crazy behavior of the 90s (which if you look at it now–is NO big deal at all) belied a very smart mind and Drew is now a film producer for her own production plus the creator of the cosmetics line Flower. In this issue she talks about mixing high & low makeup brands to get a shimmering look.

So what else is in the December issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Pack a Bandmate”

  •  “I Survived Being Snowbound in a Car” Women’s Health talked to Paula Lane was trapped in her car in the Sierra Mountains with her boyfriend for several days and barely made it out alive. Unfortunately, he did not make it out with her. This essay really got to me.
