Julia Mancuso

Who dis? Julia is a gold medal winning Alpine skier who is getting ready to compete in the winter Olympics. Julia keeps herself in fighting shape wit “a lot of yoga and Pilates, the Nike Training Club app and her “lucky underwear.’ The last one is her own joke—she is not a superstitious person by nature.

Good luck Julia!

So what else is inside the December Health?

“6 Top Fitness Myths—Busted”

Health helps us “exercise smarter” by talking about all types of myths and legends in the workout world including the efficacy of crunches and whether or not weights will bulk you up (they won’t, by the way.) M

 Six Fitness Myths Busted 001

“Tracy’s Total Body Tone-Up”

I know that Tracy Anderson’s diet and fitness tips are not exactly a favorite of most trainers and health professionals, myself included.  (I mean—she asserts that indoor cycling and using dumbbells  heavier than 3 pounds will bulk a woman up—sigh. )

However,  I absolutely LOVE her floor workouts and this one is pretty darn good.

“Your Metabolism: Lower Back”

I really appreciated the advice given here on how to protect and strengthen your lower back and think it is especially helpful to fitness professionals.

Your Lower Back 001

“Life Lessons from Olympic Stars”

OMG you guys—the Olympics are coming!!! I can’t wait but in the meantime this article talks to members of the U.S. team about their individual motivation.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Track? Trail? It’s All Good” Burrr—it’s too cold to talk about running outside!
  • “Winterize Your Skin” Tips and tricks to keep your skin glowing in this insane Vortexy-y weather.
  • “Easiest Home Detox Ever” My shameful secret? I love the smell of chemicals including bleach. I know I need to cut back on them so this feature may help me go a bit greener when cleaning at home. (Like I do THAT often! Ha!)
  • “Body Clues You Shouldn’t Ignore” February is heart health awareness month so the editors of Health want you to know the symptoms is something wrong with your ticker.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 69: “Blogger Brunch” Goodie Bag Giveaway! @SweatGuru @MaxFlowSports #giveaway 28

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 69

Featuring: NYC Healthy Bloggers Fit Brunch, My First Formal Headshot and a “Sweat Guru+” Giveaway

NYC Fit Bloggers Brunch!

NYC Fit Bloggers Brunch!

Hey there! Hi there! Hi there!

How are you all doing? Since my incident of vertigo (BPPV) a couple of weeks ago I have been feeling much better (thanks so much to all of you who checked in with me. I really appreciate it.) The key when you are dealing with this type of an ailment is to learn to enjoy life’s little victories. Such as “Hey—I managed to lie back in the washing station chair at the salon and not get dizzy!”  And “Ooh, I can reach down and tie my shoe laces without falling over—cool!”  I have no idea if I will “tumble” again but I if I do—the next time I will not be as scared because and will know what the hell is going and treat the symptoms.

I have not had taken any kind of medicine (over-the-counter or prescribed) in over a week and the exercises I have found on You Tube (particularly this one from As Dr. Jo) have been most helpful. It still makes me nervous to think about teaching core moves on my back (in a supine position)—but I am getting stronger every day and will be back to my old self soon.

Anyhoo—I actually had a fun week starting with my NYC Blogger Brunch held in my apartment-whoo hoo! It’s been hella cold out here and I was worried people would bail out of the schlep to Brooklyn but we had a few brave & hearty souls come by. You can read an excellent recap here from my friend Cassandre of Losing in the City (sorry my cat scared you!) And while our conversation was private (we may have gossiped just a wee bit…) it was fun, light-hearted and full of reciprocated love.

Next time I host I will do a better job of getting the word out on Facebook (I realized I left some pretty groovy friends off of the first invite by accident—dammit!) But if you want to win your own goodie bag form the event just hang on and I will give you the details below.

First I want to thank the following Bloggers for making the trek:

We ate piles of good food, laughed our butts off, tried out the Da Vinci BodyBoard that I reviewed for Fit Bottomed Girls, and I gave away goodie bags! Want to know what they got? Get ready to watch this clio and then find out how you can win!

Also, this past week I had my first official headshot done since…hell I have NO idea when I last sat for a portrait but one of my excellent student is an ace photographer and he managed to “catch my essence” pretty well. His name is Victor Giganti and is based here in Brooklyn. I think this shot is my favorite—what do you think?

In the meantime—here is this week’s Vlog post:

You can win this stuff!

You can win this stuff!

Got that? So if you want to win a goodie bag featuring the Sweat Guru bag & pink laces, a headband from MaxFlowSports, plus the food stuffs described you need to do the following.

  • Post a comment below on letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win the @BrooklynFitChik and @SweatGuru goodie bag!”

This is my own special giveaway and I am not being paid to offer it. I will pick one winner next Monday, February 3rd and contact them directly. Good luck and enter as often as you like!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 68: Whoa Vertigo! Plus @TerryBikes @MaxFlowSports 10

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Episode 68

Featuring: A Vertigo Incident, My New Ambassadorships with Terry Bicycle and MaxFlowSports

Plus Final Reminder: NYC Healthy Blogger Brunch (Saturday, January 25th in Park Slope, Brooklyn)

Hey there! Hi there! Whoa there!

This past week I had a rather scary incident with vertigo. Well it lasted for almost three days so “incident” might not be the best way to describe what happened to me but on Monday morning I was teaching my usual core class at 8 am. There have been times in the past when I felt some dizziness when lying completely flat on my back (supine) or if I reached to the floor quickly when doing an interval move. Nothing crazy—but just a moment of feeling off balance and having to redirect myself that would happen from time to time.

This past Monday I was demonstrating a move on my back when all of a sudden I felt as if the room was spinning around me and I was completely disoriented. Hoping to just “snap out of it” I kept on talking and trying to reassure myself that everything was fine but after about 30 seconds I realized this was beyond a momentary sensation.

Turning my head to my “good” side I made eye contact with one of my students and said “please come over and help me.” Ten minutes later I was driven home by two friends who told me to make sure I eat something and get some rest. (“Must be your blood pressure!” offered one of my students.)

However deep down I knew differently–this was a BAD incident. It was not going to go away quickly either.

Two hours later I woke up from a nap with the dizziness still hanging on and my nerves completely frayed. Eventually I was able to walk to my pharmacist to get some Dramamine which helped somewhat but the symptoms lasted most of the time every single day until Thursday when I was finally able to see my brand new doctor with my brand new Obama-care insurance. (In fact, my insurance card arrived that very day.)

Turns out my inner ear canal was infected which aggravated the vertigo and ear drops helped alleviate many of my symptoms (along with a prescription for Meclizine.) I was even able to teach my classes on Friday & Saturday morning (off the bike and very much upright without too much motion) and am feeling better every day.

But now I must begin the process of finding out exactly what type of vertigo I have (there are several) and what I need to do (hopefully) prevent future “tumbles.”

Based on my symptoms so far I believe I have the following type of vertigo:

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

From the Mayo Clinic Staff:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo — the sudden sensation that you’re spinning or that the inside of your head is spinning.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is characterized by brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. Symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are triggered by specific changes in the position of your head, such as tipping your head up or down, and by lying down, turning over or sitting up in bed. You may also feel out of balance when standing or walking.”

What this means is that I will learn to do a series of exercises at home to get the ear crystals back in place that are floating around like freaks on a party boat right now. I am most hopeful this will work and secretly dread it could happen again while I am either driving, on the subway or just out in public and not in a safe place to be helpless.

But I know that I am also a badass and can take on any challenge in front of me. So I will keep you all up-to-date on my progress but if you know anything about vertigo—please reach out and let me know what you experiences have been and what works for you. I want to hear from you!

And now, cat photo time!

The Floof looked out for me every day. (Sarah)

The Floof looked out for me every day. (Sarah)

Now on to this week’s insanely happy news: (Drum roll!)

Terry Bicycles Ambassadors:

After months of reaching out and talking back & forth I can finally announce that I am a Terry Bicycles Ambassador! Whoo hoo! If you are not familiar with them—Terry makes some of the best cycling gear for women and I have been a fan of their for many, many years. I am beyond thrilled to help introduce them to a whole new audience of active chicks who want to look cute while staying safe on their two-wheelers. I will be writing a regular column for their monthly newsletter as well and will be sure to post them on my Facebook and Twitter page.

In the meantime, be sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

 Terry

MaxFlowSports:

Also, I was recently contacted by a new company called MaxFlowSports that creates some of the best (and secure) headbands on the market for men and women to keep you hair back and still look good.

Created by Steve Hines, these headbands are made with a “cross-grip” technology to stay in place on the top of your head no matter what workout your are doing. I cannot tell you how crazy it makes me to keep pulling on my headband into place when I am teaching. These hairbands work great and I am happy to call myself one of their new brand ambassadors.

Be sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

And if you would lie to try one and live in New York City—they will be included in the goodie bag at my Super, Super Brooklyn Blogger Brunch!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “New Year’s Day” Ride U2, Pompeii, Foos, The Sheepdogs & More 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“New Year’s Day” (50-minute Ride)

new-year-day-u2_1388112442

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It might seem by the title of this week’s playlist that I was celebrating the arrival of 2014 and therefore it is special for the New Year’s holiday. No! The first track (one of U2’s best IMHO) just happens to be an excellent song to start off a class. The beat is strong, consistent and helps everyone get into the mood to ride. Therefore–you can use this playlist any time of year for a kick ass workout.

  • New Year’s Day: U2

Great warm-up song that can be played any time of year. Really!

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

I always like to think of this song as THE perfect second tune to play in a spin class as it ramps up the energy and gets everyone in a good mood.

  • Gettin’ Jiggy With It: Will Smith

Is there anyone more charming and likable than Will Smith?

  • But if You Close Your Eyes: Pompeii

This could be my new favorite band as they write some of the best songs for working out and getting motivated to move.

  • No More Drama: Mary J. Blige

I have talked about this tune before but it truly  is fantastic for hills and climbs.

  • Modern Love: David Bowie

I like to do strength intervals here with 15-seconds of hard work and 30-second rests in between.

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

This is another song I have talked about before but it is just too damn catchy for words!

  • Times Like These: Foo Fighters

One of my students recently told me “every time I hear the Foo Fighters– I feel like doing sprints.”  The Foos know how to get people excited!

  • White Rabbit: Jefferson Airplane

“Remember what the door mouse said …feed your head!”

  • The Hardest Button to Push: The White Stripes

Bump, bump, bump—I love the beat of this song.

  • Ghosts: Ladytron

My students climb to this with gradually increasing resistance with the last minute being the toughest part. I tell them to work at their top level until they hear the gong. If you listen to this song you will know what I mean.

  • The Impression I Get: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

I am not sure what a “bosstone” is but I do love this 90s tune.

  • That’s the Way: Led Zeppelin

Throwing in a little Zep gives me the happies.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Wish I could say it was easy and I have been perfect but alas, my candy cravings (brought on by excessive stress) were so strong the other day I chowed down on a few tic tacs from my purse as if my life depended on them. Oh, and I may have had a glass of red wine or two (or three…)

However, I am sticking to it as closely as possible and am enjoying the results so far (skin clear, gut feels fine, no bloating—score!)

Here is a photo of the “Beef & Bacon Cottage Pie” I made last weekend that rocked my socks off. Deeeeee-liscious!

What Did We Learn This Month? @FitnessMagazine January Review & Recap #SweatPink 2

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Fitness: January 2014

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

It’s time for the January issues to come in and we are starting my first review of the year with Fitness. I am a fan of this magazine as it is less interested in celebrities and focuses on giving great workouts in each issue.  So let’s get started, shall we?

 “Tone All Over”

Michelle Dozois who created the BodyFit 360 DVD offers this workout that will help develop muscles with a boot camp class intensity along with yoga poses.

Tone all over 001

“Fast Belly Blast”

Loved this workout from Shaun T. (who created the popular workout DVD series Insanity) as it works your entire core in just 25-minutes and you can take just about anywhere.

Fast Belly Blast 001

“Mix it Up!”

So we are all stuck indoors for the foreseeable future (damn you cold weather) but that does not mean your workouts on cardio equipment have to be boring. Nay! Just try out these 30-minute suggestion from trainer Annette Comerchero who teaches group elliptical classes.

Mix it Up 001

“Hot Stuff”

This is a whole page of cool stuff on the market now including a Salt-N-Pepa snowboard. You read that correctly!

Hot Stuff 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Love It!” A whole page of beauty thingies that make me smile. (Love my beauty stories!)
  • “Your New Anti-Aging Arsenal” (Did I mention how much I like beauty stories? I do!)
  • “The Domino Effect” making just one little change in your life can have huge benefits in the long haul. In this feature Fitness had a group of women pick one new goal for just one month (turning off the TV after one hour, brushing and flossing after dinner, easing up on Facebook, etc) and shows how their lives improved overall.

Overall Grade:

A- A great magazine to get you motivated for the new year.

This Swedish DJ’s real name is Tim Bergling and he has possibly the most gorgeous face I have ever seen on a man or woman. Just look at those blue eyes and high cheekbones…sorry, what were we talking about?

  • Pompeii: Bastille

Quoting directly from Wikipedia here: “Lyrically, the song is inspired by the Roman town known by the same name, which met its fate with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.”

  • All the Small Things: blink-182

The one and only blink-182 song I know. Love it.

  • Dancing With Myself: Billy Idol

I think Billy Idol is one of the sexiest rock & roll singers of all time and this song has long been a “dancing around my bedroom like a fool” staple in my life.

  • Sunday Morning: k-os

A really fun tune for running sprints.

  • Apparitions: Matthew Good Band

For the first “climb” in this set I like this one from the Matthew Good Band.

  • Dog Days Are Over: Florence & the Machine

This was one of my favorite songs from her first album and is perfect for when you want your class to work harder and give more energy.

  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark: Fall Out Boy

Kind of, sort of THE perfect workout tune which makes everyone helpless against its charms.

  • Love Interruption: Jack White

I have a thing for pasty white guys who croon for love.

  • Do What U Want: Lady Gaga (with R. Kelly)

Gaga was just so damn charming on the Howard Stern Show that she can do no wrong in my eyes.

  • The Perfect Life: Moby (featuring Wayne Coyne)

I am not sure if everyone is aware of this but MOBY HAS A NEW SONG YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT NOW!

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

If you want to get a group to move hard just one last time, this is what you need to play for them.

  • XO: Beyoncé

This is my absolute favorite song on her new album.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Ox Ox,
