Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist “Hey Brother” Ride Avicci, The Fugees, The Killers, Big Data & More 3

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Hey Brother” (50-minute Ride)

(Also, Does Your Gym Stereo Suck As Much As Mine?)

Fugees

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

A few weeks ago I heard Killing Me Softly With His Song by Roberta Flack on the local oldies station and then switched to a hip hop channel and heard The Fugees remake only a few minutes later—spooky!  It was then I decided to download The Score and include them in my next playlist. Done and done.

Here is my quandary and I want to know if any of you out there experience this as well. Do you ever come across any songs that are/were recorded at too soft a volume to play on your gym stereo? Every once in a while, I play a tune in class that sounds like a whisper and even if I turn the stereo “to 11”—it just does not play loud enough.  Is it just me?  Does this happen to any of you as well?

That is exactly what happened with my Fugees this past week. I cranked the stereo all the way up and you could still barely hear Lauryn Hill which is a travesty.  Music industry—figure out this problem!

Anyway, today’s playlist got an official thumb’s up by the local high school track team who heard me play it over the loud speakers at my gym. Let’s dive in…

  • Hey Brother: Avicii

Avicii is a Swedish DJ who is getting tons of airplay these days and this particular tune has kind of a country twang to it making it fun for a warm-up.

  • Crank It Up: Hipjoint (with Sherry St. Germain)

This song has a raucous, fun beat and (thankfully) plays super loud!

(Sorry–no video clip exists for this song. Try iTunes!)

  • Killing Me Softly With His Song: The Fugees

If you are not moved by this song in any way—you simply have no soul.

  • Boys Wanna Be Her: Peaches

Have you heard about the fabulous Peaches? This woman can rock bigger and better than most dudes!

  • Dangerous: Big Data

If you like you like funky music—give jam a try. You’ll be glad you did!

  • Jump Around: House of Pain

I saw a kid today dance his butt off to Jump Around and it made me smile.

  • No Heaven: Champion

This song has a bouncy feel.

  • Temple: Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon know how to create hard-driving tunes that get people to move faster.

  • Cannibal: Silversun Pickups

The latest from this band is really fast and perfect for sprint drills.

  • We’re All In This Together: Sam Roberts Band

Sam Roberts is a totally adorable Canadian (you know I love my Canadians!)

  • Sweater Weather: The Neighbourhood

Not quite sure what it is about this song I like so much but it sort of draws me into a whole other world whenever I hear it.

  • Seether: Veruca Salt

I use Veruca Salt  to soothe my inner 90s rock chick.

  • All These Things That I’ve Done: The Killers

Let’s end this ride with a cool down with this tune from my favorite band from Las Vegas.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Hey gang! Guess what happened in New York City? Hold on to your knickers but we have had TWO ENTIRE DAYS (in a row) over 50 degrees & sunny!! Whoo hoo! After several weeks in a row of cold & damp rain, excessive snow, frigid temps and fogginess it feels great to run errands and not have to bundle up to within an inch of my life. In fact, it feels pretty damn terrific though I know spring really not arrive for a few more weeks. (Oh spring–I will see you again, won’t I?)

In the meantime, I have a few fun items to share with you today plus my newest giveaway—Blue Diamond almonds!

So what happened this past week?

  • While on assignment with Fit Bottomed Girls this past week I went to a yoga session & luncheon hosted by ZICO coconut water at Exhale Spa to celebrate Olympic Alpine Skier Julia Mancuso and her return from the Sochi games. The Olympian even brought her bronze medal along and let us all check it out!  I will send you the link for this post as soon as it is live. In the meantime—here is a photo of the lovely (and patient) Julia allowing me to ogle her bronze medal. (Those things are super heavy, by the way!)

Me and the medal

  • Also for Fit Bottomed Girl I wrote this article about Superstar Gym and their “Fitwalker” class which is basically a treadmill workout that uses pure leg power. As in you do not plug it in or turn it on. You just get on it work your little butt off. Anyone want to take a class with me? Let me know! In the meantime enjoy this photo of Christian Castano who teaches at Superstar Gym. (You’re welcome)

What Did We Learn This Month? @OxygenMagazine with Snowboarder Elena Hight 2

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Oxygen

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

 “Reaching New Hights”

On the cover of Oxygen we have Elena Hight who is a badass snowboarder and therefore needs a butt-kicking workout to get into her amazing shape. In the magazine you can get her workout from her coach Brad Jones, CSCS, which emphasizes “power, strength and stamina.”

Elena started competing professionally at age 14 and entered her first Olympics in Torino in 2006.

 Hight Hopes 001

“Build a Gold Medal Body”

Some of the best female athletes who have competed in the Olympics offer their favorite exercises to get an overall top level workout. (This seesaw barbell press looks intense!)

Build an Olympic Body 001

“Look Out Below”

You ankles and calves can help you stay steady and keep your core in shape but you have to learn how to work them properly. You can increase the strength and power of your jumps (and help undo the damage of high heels) with these moves.

Ankles calves 001
“Red, White and Blue for You, You and You”

Okay, the Ralph Lauren sweater looks far less tacky and busy in this magazine than it did in the press photos.

Red White and Blue 001

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Your Inner Olympian” Tosca Reno (my personal hero) offers her advice for staying motivated in the winter months and gain an Olympic champion’s attitude.
  • “Jump Yourself Slim” For some stranger reason I have no patience for jump rope workouts but the one featured in this issue looks like it is a calorie scorcher.
  • “Skeleton Sprints” Looking to increase your speed? This workout from U.S. Olympic skeleton racer Noelle Pikus-Pace should do the trick.

Overall Grade:

A-    This issue has plenty of workouts to keep every kind of athlete happy and challenged.

B-

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway! @Taste_of_Nature Snack Bars #fitbloggin 23

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway

The “Taste of Nature” Snack Bars

Plus: Rosacea Flare-Ups & “House of Cards” Is Back on Netflix!

TON-RealTastesGood-GreenUS_Pomegranate-RGBUS Quebec Cranberry Box_300dpi

Hey there! Hi there! Hi there!

Sooooo, is it cold enough for ya?  Honestly this winter has me rethinking this whole “living in New York” thing. It’s not often I miss California but times like this, take me back to the land of sunshine! And we have several more weeks of it to look forward to over the next several weeks. (Ugh squared!)

With the extremes in temperature my rosacea has flared up and the bottom of my face has red & scaly patches which is not exactly a look I want to show on video so this week. So with that in mind—I have giving my aching epidermal layer a rest and will put off my Vlog until later this week.

Here are a couple items before I dive right into this week’s giveaway.

  • I am so sick of this weather that this weekend I whipped out my summer playlist during my spin classes to get everyone in a better mood. In case you are interested—here it is. (You also get a picture of me in my favorite summer cover-up when I was a wee girl living in Long Island Summer Playlist.)
  • One good thing about living on the east coast in crappy weather is that you can spend an entire day catching up on your favorite shows on Netflix such as, say House of Cards Season 2. Have any of you been watching? I actually sat on my couch (more like laid down on my couch but, who cares) and watched the first five episodes of the new season in basically a haze. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Taste of Nature Snack Bars Giveaway

This week I am offering a giveaway of the most delicious snack bars that I have tried in quite some time. (On par with KIND bars, really!) The company is called Taste of Nature and their snack bars are 100% certified organic, gluten free and are non-GMO project certified.

Plus:

  • Contains nothing artificial, no fillers, no added sugar and no chemicals with names as hard to pronounce as they are to digest
  • High in fiber and healthy carbohydrates combine providing a satisfying snack with real food taste.
  • Made from the highest quality organic ingredients in a facility powered by renewable energy
  • Delivers a great taste you can feel good about

Here are the links for “Taste of Nature” so you can learn more about them:

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tasteofnature

“Taste of Nature” is providing one box containing three bars and will ship directly to whoever wins this giveaway. (I am posing with my best side for your viewing pleasure, you’re welcome!)

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

 “Arms Race”

I love these moves from Andrea Rogers of Xtend Barre that will shape your arms. My shoulders were burning after I tried this circuit

“Love It!”

I love my beauty stories and the Venus compact razor and Philosophy Mineral Makeup featured here give me the “I Wants.”

Beauty Stuff 001

“Hot Stuff”

After weeks of wearing snow boots nonstop this photo of cheerful-looking sneakers made me realize Spring is indeed around the corner.

Hot Stuff 001

“The Flat-Abs Formula”

Fitness asked top trainers to give their favorite moves for abs. This page featuring balance ball moves from Josh Fly of Chelsea Piers made me go “hmmm.” Especially the “Rolling Pin” as it looks super tough. (Just for my advanced core students, I guess?)

Flat Abs Formula 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Power Combos” Loved this story about women who made new friendships while trying new workouts.
  • “Quickie Calorie Crushers” Benjamin Hendrickson of Chelsea Piers offers his “get-fit time-savers” including saving your stretching routine for bedtime and a “turbo circuit” you can fit in quickly during your busy day.
  • “Don’t Go There” Paula Derrow takes on the subject of weight gain after getting married and how she learned to speak about touchy subjects with her husband.

Overall Grade:

A-  Lots of good information in the march issue plus lots of pages to rip out and try at the gym!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Crystal Vases” 50-min Ride P!nk, Gwen Stafani, Green Day, Nicki Minaj 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Crystal Vases” (50-minute Ride)

Nicki Minaj

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Is it cold enough for you? (West Coast peeps can just shut their collective pie holes, by the way. We get it—it’s nice there. Now stop bragging about it on Facebook!)

Anyhoo I finally got around to creating a new playlist and it received kudos over the weekend by my picky students. It’s a mixture of old & new tunes and I hope you all enjoy it. (Now enough of the Polar Vortex crap!)

  • Crystal Vases: The Last Royals

I love this song to use as a warm-up as it is fun and poppy sounding. However—try tot to focus on the lyrics as they are rather, um, depressing.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sara

My fondness for Canadians continues with this duo who write some really catchy pop-rock tunes.

  • Get the Party Started: P!nk

If you need a go-to that is guaranteed to get the whole room into a groove—try this one from P!nk. Cuz it rules!

  • World Turning: Fleetwood Mac

I love Lindsey Buckingham and this one is one of my all-time favorites from his early days in Fleetwood Mac.

  • Midnight City: M83

This is one of those slow, climb-type of songs that reminds me of 80s New Wave music.

  • Hollaback Girl: Gwen Stefani

Personally, I prefer the version where she curses…B A N A N A S! (Don’t worry, this video is clean.)

  • I Don’t Feel Ike Dancing: Scissor Sisters

If there is a happier sounding song in the world—I have yet to find it.

  • Brain Stew: Green Day

Give me some crunchy-sounding guitars just about any day of the week, thankyouverymuch.

  • Holding on for Life: Broken Bells

The first time I heard this song I was convinced it was Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon singing as the Bee Gees. Love it though I know nothing about this band.

  • Machinehead: Bush

Are they names after the President(s?) Does anyone know the answer to that?

  • Starships: Nicki Minaj

Once again—I prefer the dirty version of this tune. (NSFW! Really!)

  • Stars: Moby

For some reason Moby seems to write the perfect songs to use for “climbs.”

  • Changes: David Bowie

“Time may change me, but I can’t change time.”

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 71: “Ultimate Booty Workout,” The Biggest Loser Kerfuffle, and 5 “Retired” Songs 16

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 71

The “Let’s Giveaway Ultimate Booty Workouts” Edition

Plus: The Biggest Loser Controversy & 5 Songs I Have “Retired”

Booty Book cover

Hey there! Hi there! Hi there!

ULTIMATE BOOTY WORKOUTS

One of my favorite Blogger buddies is Tamara Grand of Fit Knit Chick. Tamara is busy wife, mother, pet lover (fellow cat lady!) and personal trainer who specializes in helping women in their 40s & 50s get into shape. You have probably deduced from the name of her Blog she is also a bit of a knitter and likes to figure how to make beautiful things with yarn and a little imagination.

Tamara’s first book is the Ultimate Booty Workouts: Exercises to Build, Lift and Sculpt an Amazing Butt from Ulysses Press and I am picking one winner to receive a copy of it (Continental U.S. and Canada only.) You need to check out the clip down below to find out how to win. (I am a little chatty today so jump on down there if you do not have the patience for a little ranting.)

THE BIGGEST LOSER

So, have any of you heard about a certain TV show called The Biggest Loser? Well in case you have been studying the back & forth of the Woody Allen, Dylan Farrow, Mia Farrow, Moses Farrow and Ronan Farrow nightmare instead here is the rundown of the best links for The Biggest Loser Finale/Salute to Disordered Eating & Thinking:

So I guess we should all finally admit that this show is NOT about getting healthy and is in fact a corporate-sponsored spectacle that found a way to make money fat-shaming a willing group of people desperate to save their lives?  See, you create footage of people throwing up into potted plants, stumbling on treadmills and breaking down in tears due to exhaustion and it is okay. Because this is how you cure obesity! And it doesn’t matter if the same things happen each season—because we will keep repackaging it like it is new!

NBC doesn’t care about health & wellness—ratings will always be king to them. Ratings and profit share are of top interest to every network and NBC in particular taking branding of The Biggest Loser to top restaurant chains and getting them to pay millions for the chance to sell to their audience.  The sheer number of sponsors on the program and the lack of high-priced actors make this program a money maker. (I could never get through an episode of The Biggest Loser because of all of the damn commercials throughout the show that already had advertisements!)

And I am sure the winner had dollar signs in her head the whole time. Can you blame her? Who couldn’t use $250,000? Would you willingly lose a quarter million dollars over a few pounds? I would have done the same damn thing if I thought I could get that small. (How the hell doesn’t she have loose skin, by the way? Anyone?)

She certainly isn’t a villain, a victim or a stooge—she is a competitor. I give Rachel a pass. She went on a game show and won the whole shebang.

Let’s just hope we never see it get to this level again. (Shuddering at the very thought of it.)

My point is we cannot find salvation for the obesity epidemic by a profit-driven entertainment company. They will always look to make it sensational and forget about the whole “let’s help people really in dire need right now.”

(Whew! I am done with this one. Let’s move on, shall we?)

FIVE SONGS I HAVE “RETIRED”

Putting together playlists for my classes (and let’s be real—for you guys as well!) is one of the joys of my life. I decided to go back to some older ones to see if maybe I should bring back some songs I have forgotten about over the years. This brought me face to face with several songs that used to appear regularly in my classes that I eventually dropped altogether. I still like them all for listening but for teaching—I am officially done with the following five tunes…

  • Sexy Back: Justin Timberlake (Listened to this one way too many times to appreciate anymore. Love JT but with this one I am dunzo.)
  • Single Ladies: Beyonce (OMG–I loved this song when it first came out but I damn it got annoying. And I am a huge B fan. )
  • Sweet Child of Mine: Guns N Roses (This used to be a song that rocked everyone socks off but I have to admit—it’s classic rock now and some people just can’t take it. I got sick of seeing some of my student’s faces get all grumpy for the whole six minutes. Love it in my personal life but in classes—nope.)
  • Give it Away: Red Hot Chili Peppers (I love most of their music for fast sprints—but this tune is just a tough slog for me. Too repetitive and loooooong. About a minute and half too long.)
  • Freedom 90: George Michael (I did this to myself. I played it so many damn times over the years I lost all of my joy for it. And this was one of my favorite songs of ALL time. So I am letting George go for a while.)

So are there any songs you used to love and now have to retire from your workout playlist? Let me know.

In the meantime– let’s get on to this week’s Vlog post:

February 2014

Women’s Health Cover Star for February 2014:

German supermodel and longtime Project Runway host Heidi Klum is on the cover and featured inside. Turns out Heidi had about a dozen jobs to deal with every day including designing her own line of sneakers for New Balance which she shows off in the magazine—very cute!

She also shares a story about accepting an Emmy award while being a bit tipsy on champagne (she imbibed with co-winner Tim Gunn—lucky gal!)

So what else is in the February issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Sculpt a Knockout Body”

I like this workout from UFC Fighter Mike Dolce and plan to use in my bootcamp classes very soon.

15 Minute Workout 001

 Beautify Your Back”

Women’s Health states that “skin-baring season” is arriving soon—LMAO! Anyhoo, the workout moves featured here will help make your back strong.

Beautify Your Back 001

“Getting in Shape is Child’s Play”

Tapping into the fun part of your workouts can help make the time go by faster is the point here.

Playground 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Genius Diet” The best foods to eat that will make your brain say “thank you!”
  • “We Survived a Bear Attack” Women’s Health talks to two women who had a rather interesting experience while taking a trip to the mountains in Nova Scotia. (Note to self—do NOT go into the woods without Bear Spray!)

Overall Grade:

I was not as enamored with this issue as I am usually with Women’s Health. I am sure next month will knock my socks off, however.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog 70: My Super, Duper 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook Giveaway! #21dsd 29

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 70

Featuring: My Super, Duper 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook Giveaway!

21 DAY COOKBOOK COVER Jan30

Hey there! Hi there! Hi there!

It has been a wild and wooly in the fitness blogosphere—whoa! First we had this rather, um—interesting personal essay from Jen Polachek who talked about her internal struggle when facing a “fairly heavy set black woman” who dared to enter her yoga class on the supposedly woman-friendly site XO Jane. I am NOT kidding—read it for yourself here: OX Jane 1.

The first response I noticed came courtesy of the beautiful & talented Erika Nicole Kendall of the Blog The Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss. Nicely done, Erika.

If you are looking for the perfect rebuttal in addition to Erika’s than you can hardly do better than to check out the incredible Pia Glen who wrote this on XO Jane. Both managed to peel away the icky layers of pseudo self-awareness of Polachek’s personal essay which for some reason was featured in the “It Happened to Me” page—usually dominated by sad or scary stories.

Anyhoo—this story has been discussed to the nth degree so let’s just move on to a couple of fun news items and then talk about my FAB giveaway—yes?

  • I am going to be speaking at Fitbloggin this year! Tickets are on sale NOW so get them while you can. (We will be in Savannah this year—whoo hoo!)
  • In case you missed it—Terry Bicycles announced my ambassadorship on their site here. Very excited about this partnership!
  • My writing chops are going to get a workout with my soon-to-be regular contributions on SweatGuru.com. (Whoop!)

And now, on to this week’s big giveaway!

21 DAY SUGAR DETOX COOKBOOK

The New York Times best-selling author Diane Sanfilippo, BS. NC has written some of my favorite Paleo books including Practical Paleo and The 21-Day Sugar Detox and is an all-around cool chick (and animal lover!) in addition to being the writer of some kick ass recipes.

If you are looking to find ways to get refined sugars out of your diet without starving yourself or losing your energy—you need to read her newest book The 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook.

If you want to win a copy today, keep on reading to find out what you need to do. (Disclaimer alert: I received a copy of The 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook for giveaway from Victory Belt publishing and was not paid to offer to my readers.)

I love this cookbook and have been having a ball making some yummy (and healthy) versions of some of my favorite foods including Shepard’s Pie which you can see below. (This is a new favorite recipe for me!)

Nom Nom!

Nom Nom!

So, enough of my dawdling and let’s get on to this week’s Vlog post:
