Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist “Hey Brother” Ride Avicci, The Fugees, The Killers, Big Data & More

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Hey Brother” (50-minute Ride)

(Also, Does Your Gym Stereo Suck As Much As Mine?)

Fugees

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

A few weeks ago I heard Killing Me Softly With His Song by Roberta Flack on the local oldies station and then switched to a hip hop channel and heard The Fugees remake only a few minutes later—spooky!  It was then I decided to download The Score and include them in my next playlist. Done and done.

Here is my quandary and I want to know if any of you out there experience this as well. Do you ever come across any songs that are/were recorded at too soft a volume to play on your gym stereo? Every once in a while, I play a tune in class that sounds like a whisper and even if I turn the stereo “to 11”—it just does not play loud enough.  Is it just me?  Does this happen to any of you as well?

That is exactly what happened with my Fugees this past week. I cranked the stereo all the way up and you could still barely hear Lauryn Hill which is a travesty.  Music industry—figure out this problem!

Anyway, today’s playlist got an official thumb’s up by the local high school track team who heard me play it over the loud speakers at my gym. Let’s dive in…

  • Hey Brother: Avicii

Avicii is a Swedish DJ who is getting tons of airplay these days and this particular tune has kind of a country twang to it making it fun for a warm-up.

  • Crank It Up: Hipjoint (with Sherry St. Germain)

This song has a raucous, fun beat and (thankfully) plays super loud!

(Sorry–no video clip exists for this song. Try iTunes!)

  • Killing Me Softly With His Song: The Fugees

If you are not moved by this song in any way—you simply have no soul.

  • Boys Wanna Be Her: Peaches

Have you heard about the fabulous Peaches? This woman can rock bigger and better than most dudes!

  • Dangerous: Big Data

If you like you like funky music—give jam a try. You’ll be glad you did!

  • Jump Around: House of Pain

I saw a kid today dance his butt off to Jump Around and it made me smile.

  • No Heaven: Champion

This song has a bouncy feel.

  • Temple: Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon know how to create hard-driving tunes that get people to move faster.

  • Cannibal: Silversun Pickups

The latest from this band is really fast and perfect for sprint drills.

  • We’re All In This Together: Sam Roberts Band

Sam Roberts is a totally adorable Canadian (you know I love my Canadians!)

  • Sweater Weather: The Neighbourhood

Not quite sure what it is about this song I like so much but it sort of draws me into a whole other world whenever I hear it.

  • Seether: Veruca Salt

I use Veruca Salt  to soothe my inner 90s rock chick.

  • All These Things That I’ve Done: The Killers

Let’s end this ride with a cool down with this tune from my favorite band from Las Vegas.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

 “Reaching New Hights”

On the cover of Oxygen we have Elena Hight who is a badass snowboarder and therefore needs a butt-kicking workout to get into her amazing shape. In the magazine you can get her workout from her coach Brad Jones, CSCS, which emphasizes “power, strength and stamina.”

Elena started competing professionally at age 14 and entered her first Olympics in Torino in 2006.

“Build a Gold Medal Body”

Some of the best female athletes who have competed in the Olympics offer their favorite exercises to get an overall top level workout. (This seesaw barbell press looks intense!)

Build an Olympic Body 001

“Look Out Below”

You ankles and calves can help you stay steady and keep your core in shape but you have to learn how to work them properly. You can increase the strength and power of your jumps (and help undo the damage of high heels) with these moves.

“Red, White and Blue for You, You and You”

Okay, the Ralph Lauren sweater looks far less tacky and busy in this magazine than it did in the press photos.

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Your Inner Olympian” Tosca Reno (my personal hero) offers her advice for staying motivated in the winter months and gain an Olympic champion’s attitude.
  • “Jump Yourself Slim” For some stranger reason I have no patience for jump rope workouts but the one featured in this issue looks like it is a calorie scorcher.
  • “Skeleton Sprints” Looking to increase your speed? This workout from U.S. Olympic skeleton racer Noelle Pikus-Pace should do the trick.

Overall Grade:

A-    This issue has plenty of workouts to keep every kind of athlete happy and challenged.

B-

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Crystal Vases” 50-min Ride P!nk, Gwen Stafani, Green Day, Nicki Minaj

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Crystal Vases” (50-minute Ride)

Nicki Minaj

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Is it cold enough for you? (West Coast peeps can just shut their collective pie holes, by the way. We get it—it’s nice there. Now stop bragging about it on Facebook!)

Anyhoo I finally got around to creating a new playlist and it received kudos over the weekend by my picky students. It’s a mixture of old & new tunes and I hope you all enjoy it. (Now enough of the Polar Vortex crap!)

  • Crystal Vases: The Last Royals

I love this song to use as a warm-up as it is fun and poppy sounding. However—try tot to focus on the lyrics as they are rather, um, depressing.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sara

My fondness for Canadians continues with this duo who write some really catchy pop-rock tunes.

  • Get the Party Started: P!nk

If you need a go-to that is guaranteed to get the whole room into a groove—try this one from P!nk. Cuz it rules!

  • World Turning: Fleetwood Mac

I love Lindsey Buckingham and this one is one of my all-time favorites from his early days in Fleetwood Mac.

  • Midnight City: M83

This is one of those slow, climb-type of songs that reminds me of 80s New Wave music.

  • Hollaback Girl: Gwen Stefani

Personally, I prefer the version where she curses…B A N A N A S! (Don’t worry, this video is clean.)

  • I Don’t Feel Ike Dancing: Scissor Sisters

If there is a happier sounding song in the world—I have yet to find it.

  • Brain Stew: Green Day

Give me some crunchy-sounding guitars just about any day of the week, thankyouverymuch.

  • Holding on for Life: Broken Bells

The first time I heard this song I was convinced it was Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon singing as the Bee Gees. Love it though I know nothing about this band.

  • Machinehead: Bush

Are they names after the President(s?) Does anyone know the answer to that?

  • Starships: Nicki Minaj

Once again—I prefer the dirty version of this tune. (NSFW! Really!)

  • Stars: Moby

For some reason Moby seems to write the perfect songs to use for “climbs.”

  • Changes: David Bowie

“Time may change me, but I can’t change time.”

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…
