Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 76: Bike Spring Cleaning, SELF & A Warning for Bloggers, Plus Giveaway of Functional Cross Training 19

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #76

Spring Cleaning for Your Bike, SELF magazine’s “Tutu” Kerfuffle and My Brand-New

 Functional Cross-Training Book Giveaway!

Functional Cross Training

Functional Cross Training

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s the day after my birthday when I post this and no I will NOT tell how many spanks I should have received but let’s just say I remember the 80s–mmmkay?

My mood is a little better this week than last which might be because the temperature is above 40 degrees or maybe I was just in a bit of a funk. Let’s just say I am trying to embrace the new season that is finally arriving and ready to kick some ass again. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Today I want to talk about getting your bike ready for the spring, the “inadvertent” mess-up that is the April issue of SELF magazine and my groovy new book giveaway Functional Cross Training (three copies folks—your odds are good to win!)

  • Terry Bikes/Bicycling Magazine: As the fitness ambassador for Terry Bicycles (their first!) I am happy to forward along my latest Blog post for them which talks about Spring Cleaning for Your Bike. Leah Flickinger from Bicycling magazine gave me the tips and I cannot WAIT to get out on the road again. Be sure to follow Leah on Twitter as well as @BicyclingMag.

Also—you can enter to win a $500 Cycling Wardrobe from Terry Bicycles now until April 16th and you need to do is fill out one easy form, so go for it!

  • SELF magazine had the ‘Worst Week Ever!” Oy vey. Where do I even BEGIN here? In case you have not heard about this debacle (all of the best links are here by the way) SELF magazine asked Monika Allen if they could print a photo of her and her friend running in a race wearing tutus as they story was about running with tutus. Monika is a running coach who raises funds for Girls on The Run of San Diego with her own tutu business Glam Runner. Well it turned into a slam piece where SELF essentially mocked Monika and her friend Tara Baize for wearing tutus while running because, um– they think it is a “lame” trend.

The comment was/is juvenile, myopic and out-of-date with what is actually happening in the running world. “How dare you be different from me? We are SERIOUS about running here!”

Here’s the rub—Monika had brain cancer at the time of the run. She was in the middle of chemotherapy treatments and the photo they used of her in the Los Angeles marathon was the first time she felt healthy enough in about a year to run a full marathon. That’s right, she had a tumor in her head and she ran a marathon. Suck on that haters!

Monika asked the editors to explain their actions. After getting no response from them she did the wise thing and went to her local press. Let me tell you—the word “tutu” took off all over the Twitter and Facebook right afterwards.

Long story short (honestly—the link I sent before will give you a fuller picture) SELF’s editor in chief Lucy Danziger did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology. (Though it is certainly not worse because Monika had cancer. It’s bad all on its own because it was a mean comment—period.)

I have not done a full post on SELF in several months because frankly, there was not enough content that deserved a full review. What I will do with my April 2014 issue is toss it directly into the recycling bin unread. I will feature SELF again when they prove themselves worthy of the trust of all of the women working hard to get healthy.

  • My Functional Cross Training Giveaway: This week I have three copies of Functional Cross Training from Brett Stewart & Jason Werner which is published by Ulysses Press. Whoo hoo! Scroll down below for all of the details on how you can win. (Note—Ulysses Press will send the book directly to each winner and they did not pay for this promotion!)

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist “Happy Ride” with Pharrell Williams, Metric, Moby & More 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Happy Ride” (50-minute Ride)

"I look badass like this--right?"

“I look like a badass, right?”

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Spring is in the air (well, we had a hint of it over the weekend) and I am ready to look forward to a new season filled with sunny skies, warmer temps and an upbeat attitude. So today I present my newest playlist featuring some of my favorite tunes right now. Enjoy!

  • Happy: Pharrell Williams

I should hate this song with all of its cheeriness and lack of cynicism but dammit if it isn’t so much fun to bop your head along to this one. (Does that sound passive aggressive? I hope not!)

  • Fire Sign: The Gossip

Beth Ditto has one of the best voices in rock and roll and this is my favorite tunes by her band.

  • Let It Whip: Dazz Band

Can any song make me happier than this one? I think Pharrell has stiff competition here.

  • Can’t Hold Us Down: Christina Aguilera

I cannot believe this song is over ten years old now—yikes! (I am indeed getting old.)

  • When You’re Falling: Afro Celt Sound System

This is a great song to climb to and I love Peter Gabriel’s voice.

  • Gold Guns Girls: Metric

My all-time favorite Metric single and it it kills me that I have yet to see them live. (Need to work on that…)

  • Safe and Sound: Capital Cities

A real bouncy-sounding tune that reminds of 80’s pop music.

  • South Side: Moby

Gwen Stefani really classes up the joint here.

  • Let Me Entertain You: Robbie Williams

For some reason he never caught on in America but I still love to hear me some Robbie Williams.

  • Believe in Me: Sloan

If you are not familiar with this pop/rock Canadian band—try out this song to start. They know how to write hooks!

  • Creep: TLC

(This reminds me –I still need to see that VH-1 movie…)

  • Time to Pretend: MGMT

Supposedly MGMT will have a new music out this year. (Fingers crossed!)

  • Take a Picture: Filter

The lead singer is very cute and his brother was in Terminator 2.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Blog: The Sad Optimist and the Mitt Documentary 1

Brooklyn Fit Chick

Tales of An Occasionally Bummed Out Optimist & the Mitt Romney Documentary

“The optimist sees good advance, though progress oft is slow; and if he is, by any chance immersed in tears of woe, he soon emerges from his trance, his teardrops cease to flow”

“The Sad Optimist” by Walt Mason (1921)

brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all?

I will be honest—I have felt better in my life. It could just be this seemingly endless winter season (we are supposed to get ANOTHER snow storm this week!) that is giving me a case of the SADs or perhaps it is just a phase that needs to sort itself out but my mood has not been very fun lately. Not “can’t get out of bed” bad but “eh, why even bother with (insert task here)” kind of energy and malaise that has been weaving its way into my thought process. I do not want to go out very much or have long talks on the phone with anyone.  I am a little too into my Netflix queue.

I do have moments of pure joy in my life and still love teaching but there is an edge of sadness that has appeared and I think I need to just knuckle down and deal with it. As an eternal optimist—assuming things will always work out as they should is my “go-to” but lately I can’t seem to will myself happy. That’s okay. I get it, No one is supposed to be positive all of the time but my own downer feelings of late have me rethinking what I want from my life & expect of myself.

“Are you one of those people who are always in a good mood?”

Ugh—that question! It’s been a while but every so often someone who knows me only from teaching or cycling will ask me where I get my energy and why I always seem “happy.” I have NO idea why they think this. The answer is no—I am not always happy. People really get on my damn nerves sometimes. I am impatient with my laptop and am thankful living in NYC prevents me from driving because no one with a license knows what the hell they are doing on the road!

However, there has to be something I sending out to the world that many folks assume I have a sunny disposition so the world doesn’t bother me.

Let me be clear—I know exactly what is really happening in the big bad world out there. How horrible some people are, how hopeless some situations may actually be and/or my lack of being able to do anything to change any of them.

But I am in my nature—an optimist. The glass is half full. My home team will win that championship next year. Stephen King will read something I write one day and say “hey—nice work!”  And dammit—someday I will OWN A HOME and not be a renter my whole life.

Lately I have come to the realization that there just may be more sacrifices to make and I am NOT at the starting point of my next adventure yet.

And when I am confronted with hard truths and know that goals I have set for myself will take longer (much, much longer) to appear in my life—it really hurts. If a good attitude and hard work are not enough—what the hell else will it take? (A life of crime gives me the willies so that isn’t an option.)

A funny happened while watching the Mitt Romney documentary…

My Blog is not about politics and I try like hell to keep mine to myself so let me just say that I am a documentary enthusiast and do not consider the political bent of a non-fiction film when I decide to give them a looksee on my Roku.

Mitt is a behind the scenes look at Mitt Romney’s failed bid for the Presidency from 2008 & 2012. We never see his campaign managers or PR folks and only get a brief glimpse of his Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan. What the films uses as a framing device is Mitt with his family (I think there are about 100 immediate family members) who are not only encouraging him to run but KNOW IN THEIR HEARTS he will win. If there have ever been a more pep-worthy group people—I have yet to see them. They close ranks and fight like prize fighters for Romney throughout the entire film.

No one ever talks about polls or the latest Times OP-ED. You never hear about the infamous 47% comment. The Romneys constantly serve as a source of inspiration and positivity.

As the film starts a visibly shaken Romney asks if they have the President’s phone number. He knows he has lost but cannot seem to understand why it is happening. It never seemed to occur to him he could possibly lose.

I kind of relate to Mitt…

No—I do not want to be all-powerful or have as much responsibility as the President of the United States. But I know what it is like to lose and wonder what the hell happened. Sometimes I am so damn optimistic that I forget to really look at the small details or fail to remember that fallbacks and letdowns are a part of a successful journey. You don’t always get what you want when you want it.

That it is okay to be scared and anxious about the future. And just because you can manifest something into your life it doesn’t mean it will guarantee happiness.

Mitt frets that people will forever view him as a loser and so do I. Positive people feel the sting of rejection in a way that cynics can’t understand. It’s more than a physical pain—it leaves a scar. We feel embarrassed for letting people down. We hate ourselves for messing up.

This is not about perfectionism (for the life of me I do NOT understand those folks!) It’s not even about “winning” so much as goal-reaching. Positive energy and a good mental attitude are supposed to be so powerful. It can cure people of ailments and make the impossible happen.

Except when it doesn’t.

That’s how I can relate to Mitt.

Truthfully—If I were him I would take some of the money from that big old bank account, wipe my tears and get a hobby stat. But that’s just me.

Life like is a marathon (or a century ride) and the journey itself is the reward.

So I am taking this downtime to reflect and pause. Allow a few tears to flow and remember to take a dance break once each day until I get my full-on groove back. My bike will soon go to the shop to be refreshed and dust-free.  My dreams are just starting to take hold in my life.

I am a sad little optimist right now but don’t you fret. My smile will be back soon!

Until next time…

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So today is Sunday, the day we begin Daylight Savings Time and this past week I wrote a survival guide on Sweat Guru describing my best strategies for fighting the “sleepies” brought on by losing that hour of sleep. Alas, in spite of my best efforts to NOT feel that hour of sleep lost my butt is dragging around today and I am working hard to stay motivated.

But know this—I am HERE for you people today and every day. Pinky swear!

I have a few fun things to chit-chat about this week so let’s not waste any more time and get right to it, shall we?

  • Last night I did go to bed early in order to make up for Daylight Savings Time but made the colossal mistake of starting to read Mad as Hell by Dave Itzkoff. Dave is a reporter for the New York Times and is one of my favorite writers—period. His newest book is all about the making of the film Network which is one of the best films ever made (if not THE best) taking on the sensationalizing of the evening news. I first heard about Mad as Hell on The Fogenest Files podcast (hosted by the amazing Jake Fogelnest.) If you have never seen Network before—do yourself a favor and check it out today! THEN get this amazing book so we can chat about it in the future. Your brain will thank you for it!

  • My girl Josie of Yum Yucky recently talked about trying Intermittent Fasting to get through a workout & weight loss plateau. In essence she is breaking down her eating schedule to a few hours during the day to allow her body time to properly digest food and repair itself. I was a little skeptical at first but her results are so amazing that for the next few weeks I will give it a go. Monday-Friday I will eat at 9 am, Noon and 3 pm (Paleo-centric, of course) and over the weekends try to keep it to a 9-hour window (I teach all morning both days and mama needs to fuel up first!) Get back to y’all at the end of the month to let you know how it goes.

  • If you have HBO you must see Six by Sondheim which is a documentary about songwriter Stephen Sondheim where they examine his writing process and the creative inspirations for six of his best works including Send in the Clowns and my new theme song—I’m Still Here (Check out the video below by Jarvis Cocker—love!) Not kidding—I cried four times during the film and yes, I am a HUGE sap.

MaxFlow Sports Headband Giveaway

For this week’s giveaway I am offering one of two MaxFlow Sports headbands that they sent to me because I am one of their brand ambassadors—yay!

MaxFlow Sports uses a “Cross-Grip” technology so that they actually stay in place the entire time you work out (imagine that?) So while keeping the sweat out of your face they will not slip. Also, they are very comfortable and easy to maintain (machine washable.) The colors I am offering today are solid pink and a black & white print. You will one of them and I will keep the other!

Now, on to this week’s Vlog post (Forgive my sleepy face, please. It’s been a long day.)

Got that? So if you want to win this giveaway you must do the following (Continental United States, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win the @MaxFlowSports headband from @BrooklynFitChik”
  • If you haven’t already—let me know you are subscribing to my You Tube channel

I will pick one winner at random next Monday, March 17, 2013 at NOON Eastern Time and contact them directly. Good luck and enter as often as you like!

Until next time…

Ox Ox,

BFC
