Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Counting Stars” 50-Minute Ride 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Counting Stars” (50-minute Ride)

americano___lady_gaga_by_johtojamesiii-d3kdv1x

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Are you ready for a tough workout? This 50-minute playlist that I created is filled with music that will hopefully get you motivated on your next ride or run. As usual—there is a mixture of newer tunes with a few 90s gems. Enjoy!

  • Counting Stars: OneRepublic

OneRepublic is a band from Colorado who wrote this super-catchy song that makes my head bop to the beat.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & The Tantrums

Today one of my favorite students told me this was her favorite song from this list. Fitz & The Tantrums are a Los Angeles band that writes fun tunes that will make you want to sing along.

  • Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You): Kelly Clarkson

This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Seriously—Kelly Clarkson just sings the hell out of it.

  • Dangerous: Big Data

I got this directly from the Internet—“Big Data is a paranoid electronic music project from the Internet.’ Not sure what that means but Dangerous has a bouncy energy I love.

  • Rope: Foo Fighters

Whenever I want to set the volume to “11”—I put on some Foos!

  • Holiday: Green Day

This is my favorite song from American Idiot!

  • Get Off This: Cracker

When I want to reminisce about young & free in the 90s—I play songs like this one.

  • My Moon My Man: Feist

Where is Feist these days? I miss her!

  • Americano: Lady Gaga

I loves me some Gaga and this live version is fun to watch!

  • I Heard I Had: Dear Rouge

This is a new band from Vancouver and this song makes me want to dance around the room.

  • Stupid Girl: Garbage

Shirley Manson is my spirit animal.

  • Get Higher: Black Grape

This song is wonderfully subversive and fun.

  • Pets: Pornos for Pyros

I wish I could find the original video for this song as I recall it being freaky and fun.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog 79: Ladies Home Journal Closes, Boston Marathon “Sneaks,” Fitbloggin 2014, Plus SparkPeople DVD Giveaway! 23

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #79

Ladies Home Journal Closes, Boston Marathon Bib Sneaks, Tips for Your First Barre Class, Fitbloggin’ Sessions

Plus: Spark People DVD Giveaway!!

Enter to win this 2 DVD set from SparkPeople!

Enter to win this 2 DVD set from SparkPeople!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I was out and having me a grand old time last Sunday with my friend’s annual “Mexican Easter” celebration (there was drinking and piñatas involved) so I decided to wait until this week before posting another Vlog/Giveaway. Figured many of you would have spring breaks and whatnot to deal with but here we are and I am back ladies & gentleman!!  So let’s go through my latest news and then get to gettin with a giveaway featuring one of my favorite instructors in the whole world Coach Nicole of SparkPeople who is expecting a baby this July! (Congrats Nicole!)

  • Ladies Home Journal:  Today I was hoping to celebrate being included as an expert for Ladies Home Journal magazine in their May issue (photo below) but instead I must pass along the news that the 130 year-old magazine is folding due to declining ad sales. So sorry to everyone who worked there and hope they all new work very soon. (I have been through a couple of magazine closings and they are brutal!)
  • Ladies Home Journal inside 001

  • Boston Marathon Bib Sneaks UGH! This story makes me blood boil. Apparently people will buy counterfeit race bibs so they can compete in marathons that they did not qualify for which  is crappy enough but these two entitled creeps (Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley and his Blogger Wife Chelsa) decided that even though she did not qualify this year—they would steal someone else’s number in order for the two of them can run the race together. (They missed out finishing together last year due to the bombing.) I can almost think it is romantic and sweet they wanted to be together that day but the fact is—stealing someone else’s number (and it IS stealing) is just plain wrong.

  • Tips for Your First Barre Class: On to a happier topic—here is a little piece I wrote for Fit Bottomed Girls asking the experts on what you need to do before trying out your first barre class. It came out pretty nifty I must say!

  • FitBloggin’ Speaking Date: I am once again attending the FitBloggin conference that takes place June 26-29 this year in Savannah, Georgia! I will also be heading up a small group discussion on how to pitch brands for ambassadorships and sponsorships. So it is 8-9 am on Saturday morning but rumor has it that Terry Bicycles will have a special giveaway to one lucky participant. (Hmmm—wonder what it will be?) So if you are attending FitBloggin please consider getting up early Saturday and hanging out with me. I’m funny, informed and will have a prize!

  • SparkPeople DVD Giveaway: If you want to win TWO workout DVDs to get a head start on summer—check out my giveaway below. There will be one winner of this double DVD set and they will be contacted by Acacia TV directly to get their prize. Acacia is responsible for the DVD mailing and did not pay for this promotion. (Continental United States only, please!)

What Did We Learn This Month? Fitness Magazine with Serena Williams!! 6

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Fitness

May 2014

Serena Williams photographed by Jeff Olson

Serena Williams photographed by Jeff Olson

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Fitness Cover Star for May:

Serena Williams! I cannot begin to tell you how happy it makes me to see one of the Williams sisters on the cover. Serena is fierce competitor who has overcome illness and injuries that laid her out for over two years to become the number-one world ranking tennis champion.

The secret to her success is pretty simple—she uses of her on-court personae. The Serena that plays tennis is tough, single-minded, focused and in her own words “just not nice.” Which she says is about three hours of her day. The rest of the time she is a self-described “class clown” who enjoys karaoke, silly pranks and is eager to learn Korean in time for the next Summer Olympic games.

Best thing I learned in this interview—one of Serena’s favorite songs is Maneater by Hall & Oats. How great is that?

“Express Workout”

You just need a box to work out on for this circuit created by Adam Kant of Intrepid Gym in Hoboken, NJ.

Express Workout 001

Fitness Better Body Plan”

Trainer Tiffany Rothe created three 15-minute workouts that utilizes your body weight (and a towel!) to get a quick overall workout you only need to fit in three times per week to get results.

Better Body Plan 001

“Eat Your Water”

If you are looking for tasty ways to get more water in your diet—this chart will help!

Eat Your Water 001

“Data Crunch”

Fitness looks at the latest in portable tech gear to track your workouts to help you decide which one is right for you. (I personally love my SparkPeople Activity Tracker.)

Fit Trackers 001Fit Trackers 001

Fit Trackers 001 Fit Trackers 002

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Bad Habits Gone Good” Sometimes what seems to be a “vice” can really be good for you such as chocolate—yum!
  • “The New Milky Way” The lowdown on moo juice alternatives including coconut, almond, soy and hemp milk.

Overall Grade:

A!  This issue made me all kinds of happy. Go get it!

What Did We Learn This Month? Health magazine with Christina Hendricks 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

Health

May 2014

Christina Hendricks photographed by James White

Christina Hendricks photographed by James White

Health Cover Star for May:

Christina Hendricks

OMG—I love Mad Men and Joan Harris is one of my favorite characters on the show. She looks beautiful inside the magazine but the actress doesn’t really say all that much about being healthy. Well, except that Christina replaces Greek yogurt for some high-fat dairy items and prefers yoga pants to sweats.

(Inside the magazine she wears a smashing white suit from Armani that should have been the cover IMHO.)

Moving on…

So what else is inside the May Health?

“Swim in Style”

Health offers some really cute ideas for swim suits that make me think summer might actually arrive sooner than later. (Yippee!)

 Cute suits 001

“Tracy Tones You”

Tracy Anderson gives her favorite “thigh and butt-blaster” moves that I am sure will tire the hell out of me but make my legs look great. (I do love her mat work.)

Tracy Anderson 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Urinary Tract”

Women have more urinary issues than men and therefore need to be extra careful about potential issues such as UTIs, incontinence and interstitial cystitis.

Urinary Tract 001

“Get on a Roll”

As a fit chick who loves her bike this feature made me all kinds of happy with the latest gear for cyclists and exercise tips from trainer Michelle Lovitt that specifically address biker issues. (My friends at Terry Bikes made the cut!)

Gear Up 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “We Lost the High-Tech Way” The latest weight-loss apps are tested out by real women (and not editors) including those Spark People, Weight Watchers online and My Fitness Pal.com to see how well they work under real-life conditions.
  • “New Sensitive Skin Solutions” As someone who has bouts of rosacea—these articles are always of interest to me.
  • “The Secret to a Serious Calorie Burn” I am not much of a runner but for my students who are I am going to recommend they read this article about how increasing their pace can improve their overall fitness level (including metabolism!)

Follow Heath online at: www.Health.com

Overall Grade:

B This was overall a good issue but a little light on features that grabbed my interest and made me go “ooh!” Maybe next month?

 Women’s Health

May 2014

Sofia Vergara photographed by David Burton

Sofia Vergara photographed by David Burton

Women’s Health Cover Star for May 2014:

Is there any woman sexier than Sofia Vergara? Seriously—the woman steams up every scene she is in on Modern Family and I have never seen a bad picture of her. The Columbia native (and TOP earning actress on television) talks to Women’s Health about all kinds of sexy subjects including business time with her fiancé Nick Loeb and her advice to women to keep their partners interested “…don’t walk around the house with no bra and your t**s hanging out.”

Okay…..well, maybe she isn’t a delicate flower but at least she doesn’t give boring quotes in magazines!

So what else is in the May issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Flat-Belly Yoga”

Looking for some yoga moves that will help with belly bloat? Try these from the Women’s Health Big Book of Yoga. (Get you om on, people!)

Women’s Health teamed up with the hosts of The Doctors for simple health tips for women to boost their “mind, body and spirit.” Includes these upgraded workout moves from Dr. Ian Smith that can be done quickly and take your routine up a notch.

Make Over Your Workout 001

“Don’t Let an Injury Take You Down”

Right now as I am typing this post I am dealing with a strained back and tight hamstrings so this article talking about rehabbing while getting back into fighting shape is helpful.

 Do this Not That 001

“Something to Remember”

I forget why I scanned this page….hmmmm. in the meantime—check out these tips on how to remember names. (I’m Margo by the way—and you are?)

Fit As a Pro DVD Giveaway (Lauren Sesselmann)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am so happy to check in with all of you but must admit my brain has third degree “Spring Fever” and going outside is my only cure. So today I am keeping everything short & sweet while offer a 2-for DVD giveaway for one of you lucky readers. So let’s get to it!

  • Bullets Over Broadway:  I am a big fan of splashy Broadway shows plus think Bullets Over Broadway is one Woody Allen’s better films from the 90s so I was very eager to check out the musical version his show starring Zach Braff in his Broadway debut. (Never watched Scrubs so I was not too familiar with his work.) I would say that it is a very good (but not great show) with some outstanding performances. I do not predict this one will be around for long which is a shame.

  • Ryka: This week I was invited by Ryka to check out their upcoming sneaker collection for Fall 2014 and was very impressed with their use of memory foam and cushioning in their shoes. Ryka has won tons of awards over the years as a top sneaker brand that exclusively serves women as their customer base. Ryka even gave me a pair of “Devotion” sneakers that I have been wearing non-stop and absolutely LOVE. (Thanks Ryka!)

  • Fit As a Pro DVD Giveaway: Soccer superstar Lauren Sesselmann has her own series of ten-minute workout DVDs that will get you in awesome shape in no time. This week I am giving away two of latest titles 10 Minute Full Body Workouts and (my favorite!) 10 Minute full Body Workouts for Small Spaces (so you can work out just about anywhere, people!) (I used to work for Conde Nast and let me tell ya—I have some gooood Naomi Campbell stories!)

Anyhoo, after 28 years in the business Naomi is now doling out her best advice for staying happy & healthy plus she shows us a few of her favorite yoga poses. Check them out here!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “That’s Not My Name” 50-Minute Ride Ting Tings, Rhianna, Muse 6

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“That’s Not My Name” (50-minute Ride)

Iggy_Pop_-_A_Million_in_Prizes-_The_Anthology

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today I want to start off with a song that every once in a while becomes an earworm in my brain. It’s just so damn catchy and fun that I can’t think of a reason to NOT play it.

Anyhoo—I hope you like this mix today of the old and new. This is a 50-minute interval ride of varying in tempo and mood from song to song. Hope you enjoy it!

  • That’s Not My Name: The Ting Tings

I dare you to NOT sing along to the chorus—it’s damn near impossible!

  • Pon de Replay: Rhianna

Rhianna is a new obsession for me. I have been downloading her music like crazy lately.

  • Fixed to Ruin: Sam Roberts

Sam Roberts has been very popular in Canada and looks like he might be taking off here as well. This is from his last album and is my favorite from him by far.

  • Runnin’ Down a Dream: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

The video for this song still kind of freaks me out but I love playing it super loud!

  • Zombie: The Cranberries

The Cranberries bring out my inner “Irish Badass” to the fore.

  • Gold Digger: Kanye West (with Jamie Foxx)

I played this on Sunday morning and one of my students said “What was that Ray Charles song you played today?” I told him it was actually Jamie Foxx singing and that there was a BIG difference between the “clean” and “explicit” version.

  • Supermassive Black Hole: Muse

This was the first hit from Muse that made me pay attention to them.

  • Glory and Gore: Lorde

Some people get annoyed by Lorde but I think she is really interesting.

  • It’s All Been Done: Barenaked Ladies

Funny Canadians signing catchy music brings out the “happy” in me.

  • The Passenger: Iggy Pop

“Singing La La La La La La La!” (Don’t mind me while I dance around my apartment right now…)

  • Pony: Ginuwine

Outside of the annoying spelling of his name—this song is so much fun to play in class and the metaphors to silly to not enjoy thoroughly.

  • Porcelain: Moby

My favorite DJ in the whole wide world (Dave Morey) would play this song on KFOG all of the time and said that it went “right to the pleasure center” of his brain. Not a bad way to end a ride—right?

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

What Did We Learn This Month?

Women’s Health Cover Star for April 2014:

Sexy songstress Shakira is on the cover this month and she looks purrrfect! She is a judge on The Voice (a show I have never seen) and she plans to out-think Blake Shelton this season. (I know him!)

Staying in shape after giving birth to her son Milan in January 2013 meant trying new sports such as basketball and tennis. Shakira also “worked her tail off” with trainer Anna Kaiser and you can see some of her workout here:

So what else is in the April issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Win At the Power Ball”

This Dynamax medicine ball looks really cool (I want one!) and this workout from trainer Jessi Kneeland from Peak Performance NYC is a keep IMHO.

 Spoiler Alert!”

Catchy headline for an article that shows you how long certain foods & condiments should stay in your pantry or fridge. (I always need a reminder on this kind of stuff!)

 “Light on Your Feet”

The weather is getting lighter & brighter so why not get a pair of new sneaks to really get in the mood to play outdoors again?

“Perks of Fab Backside”

I didn’t know having a “fab backside” would have anything other than perks, but oh well. The workout here from trainer Holly Perkins is pretty damn great!

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “The Health Threat That Sneaks Up Silently” Women’s Health talks about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
  • “Your Body on Motion Sickness” As someone who has had bouts of vertigo—this resonated with me.
  • Beauty Bonus: Shakira is on the back cover as well with a special beauty trends feature.

Overall Grade:

A  This is a great issue so be sure to check it out!
