Announcing “EleVen by Venus” Brand Ambassador! Venus Williams!!! 6

EleVen by Venus!

Venus Williams’ Strong & Fit Line

Brand Ambassador Announcement!!!

Triple-Pink_019 copy

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Can you believe that summer is finally upon us? I for one am just loving the hell out of this hot weather and do not want to even look at my black boots anytime soon (enough wearing layers, too!) Anyhoo, I just wanted to formally announce how super excited I am to partner with the super-amazing EleVen by Venus. Venus Williams is a personal fitness hero and I love how she keeps it fierce both on and off the court.

Last year I was lucky enough to take a spin class with Venus on behalf of Fit Bottomed Girls where she showed off an exclusive collection she created for Flywheel Sports. In the words of her brand team: “We are a fitness line, and a lifestyle brand promoting health, nutrition, motivation, exercise, performance training, healthy recipes – all ways to be fit and reach your goals.”

In the near future I will be able to offer all of my friends and family (and as a reader of mine you count under both!) discounts on upcoming collections plus her best-selling gear. Yay for all of us! So stay tuned for all of the EleVen by Venus news in the future. It is looking so bright here—we gonna have to wear shades, y’all!

Until next time…

What Did We Learn This Month: Women’s Health with Miranda Lambert on the Cover! 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

June 2014

Miranda Lambert photographed by Jeff Lipsky

Women’s Health Cover Star for June 2014:

OMG—it’s Miranda Lambert on the cover and I could NOT be more excited. Not only is she a kickass artist (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a favorite tune of mine) but she also is a domestic abuse victim’s advocate (growing up her parents would take in women & children who were from abusive environment to help them get their on their feet) AND a friend of the animals who loves to take in stray dogs.

In approach of her upcoming 30th birthday Miranda decided to trade unhealthy eating habits for a balanced diet and workout schedule and has lost somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 pounds (she is not a huge fan of scale-watching.) Though offered mega bucks by huge weight loss brands to lose 40 pounds she decided to forgo the skinny-chick hype and keep it real. (She is stunning by the way!)

She offers us a look at her workout created by Crutch Boot Camp in Nashville owner Bill Crutchfield:

So what else is in the June issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Hold Still for a Hot Body”

I have habit of whipping through life like a whirling dervish but understand the need to keep still once in a while—even when working out. These isometric moves from BJ Gaddour of StreamFIT.com challenge you to hold each pose to get top results in no time.

 What You Should Pop”

I am not much of a vitamin popper but am reconsidering my stance on these things after reading this feature.

Vitamins 001

 “2014 Beauty Award Winners”

I love my lotions, potions and creams and this round-up mixing both high end and mass beauty makes me all kinds of happy. (Plus, my Amazon Prime account which will ship me many of these items this week!)

 2014 beauty awards 001

“Gotta-Have Gear”

Y’all know that I am a total bike chick and looking at gear like this makes me want to hit the road ASAP.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Sun Mistakes You Are Probably Making” Women’s Health sent “sun spy” Kayleigh Donahue Hodes to find out that even top dermatologists can misbehave with their SPF routines.  Plus, the best new products on the market to protect you from the sun’s rays. (Get new products every year, people!)
  • “Sculpt an Action Hero Bod” Tips from top Hollywood stunt doubles to look like an action star. (Alas, without the movie star salary.)
  • “10 Food Choices to Make Now” Think about not only where you buy your groceries but where they ultimately come from in order to make the most ethical choices to fit your lifestyle.

Overall Grade:

A  This is one gorgeous magazine packed with great workouts and smart features. Go get it!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Four Climbs & Some Foos” 50-Minute Ride 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

The “Four-Climbs & Some Foos” 50-Minute Ride Set

Four Climbs & Some Foos

Four Climbs & Some Foos

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week I was in the mood to rock out to some old 90s tunes while climbing hills so this playlist is a reflection of that notion. There are four “hills” here and I urge you to try to push yourself and the amount of resistance you use on a climb. Tire your legs out on the hills and then recover with intervals. Let me know what you think!

  • Middle Sea: Yuck

Here is a brand-new band from London with a kind of cheesy name. (Never commit to a band name that’s funny—that kind of stuff will get tiresome for them real soon!)

  • Use It: The New Pornographers

This is one of those fun “bouncy” songs that always seems to put people in a good mood.

  • Can’t Hold Us: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (featuring Ray Dalton)

I know some people are suffering from Macklemore exhaustion but this song is pretty damn great.

  • I Will Wait: Mumford & Sons

Every time I hear this song I forget that I am supposed to act too cool for Mumford & Sons. (They write catchy tunes, people!)

  • Apparitions: Matthew Good Band

I really wish I could find the video for this song but am happy we to have this clip to share today.

  • Come With Me Now: KONGOS

This is another new band with a strange name in ALL CAPS but regardless of how I feel about that choice—this stompy tune is fun to sing along to. “Come with me now!

  • Doin’ Time: Sublime

Cannot believe how old this song is (1997) or how old I am. (Need a nap now.)

  • Spaceman: The Killers

Not sure why more people don’t know this tune from The Killers because it kicks serious ass.

  • Clint Eastwood: Gorillaz

I use this for a slow, heavy climb in my classes.

  • No Light, No Light: Florence & the Machine

Thing song makes me want to grab a hairbrush and lip sync my little heart out.

  • My Hero: Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters wrote this about Kurt Cobain which makes it extra poignant. (Plus, I still really have the hots for Dave Grohl.)

  • I Can’t Go For That: Hall & Oates

The Philly Soul duo is now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—about time!!!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

They recently sent me a box of goodies which I will review for you all soon but wanted you all to know that I am now a HUGE fan of Gore Bike Wear. Terry sent me the Power Jacket and it is the best damn windbreaker I have ever worn in my life. If you need one jacket this summer for running, walking or cycling—get this one.

  • Joy Bauer’s New Project: This past week I was on assignment for Fit Bottomed Girls and attended a swanky lunch at the Gramercy Park Hotel (tough life—amIright?) Just a reminder that I am speaking again at this year’s Fitbloggin convention from June 26-29 in Savannah, Georgia and will heading up a small group discussion on how to pitch brands for ambassadorships and sponsorships. It’s scheduled for 8-9 am on Saturday morning which I know seems like a rough time for some people but let me sweeten your interest by telling you that Terry Bicycles will have a special giveaway to one lucky participant. (Hmmm—wonder what it will be?) So if you are attending FitBloggin please come and hang out with me!

  • Elemet Yoga for Strength and Flexibility DVD:: Full details are listed below but please know that there will be one winner of this DVD set and they will be contacted by Anchor Bay Entertainment directly to get their prize. Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:

Here are more details about this week’s giveaway:

Build Power and Suppleness Inside and Out with Ashley Turner’s New

‘ELEMENT: YOGA FOR STRENGTH & FLEXIBLITY DVD

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – Increase flexibility and strength in the mind, body and spirit right at home, anytime. Also learn how to meditate in the new “Element: Yoga for Strength & Flexibility” DVD. In this DVD, mind/body psychotherapist Ashley Turner gives the physical and mental cues to open anyone up to the full benefits of yoga.  The DVD provides two practices, each about thirty minutes in length, plus a 7-minute guided meditation bonus. As with all Element videos, the spectacular setting overlooking the Pacific Ocean adds to the enjoyment. The DVD will be available in stores and on Amazon on September 24, 2013 from Anchor Bay Entertainment.

The Strength practice will leave you feeling powerful and in control, whether you’re in Warrior III or tackling whatever the day may bring. It improves endurance and focus in every sense. The Flexibility program will bring a sense of suppleness to the muscles, joints and thoughts.  The Guided Meditation bonus is the first of its kind in the Element series. Turner provides a verbal path to follow towards deeper relaxation. It will help anyone to begin a meditation practice. According to WedMD, “meditation not only lowers blood pressure but also can amp up your immune system.”

Turner’s previously released “Element” DVDs have reached bestseller status. They have brought profound changes to many people. Ginger writes, “Since that first night I’ve done your DVD daily. I have not needed even one med for panic. I have not needed to medicate with chocolate either. My body actually seemed to crave greens.”

Tonya shared this, “I wanted to tell you that I bought your “Element: Yoga for Weight Loss” DVD in 2010. I have a thyroid problem as well as a “saying no to myself and others” problem. I lost around 60 pounds. Once I started feeling natural energy, it became easy to treat myself right.”

Lisa said, “I have many yoga DVDs, and have attended many classes over the years.  Your DVD is – by far – the easiest routine to follow.  I also feel happy during the session … it’s as though you’ve sprinkled some sort of magic-dust into that yoga session!”

No props are needed for these programs. None of the moves are complicated. The challenges come from the holding and releasing more than the postures themselves.

Ashley Turner is a Los Angeles-based yoga instructor with a master’s degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in depth (Jungian) psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She holds a private practice as a Marriage + Family Psychotherapy Registered Intern. Turner was formally trained in classical Ashtanga Yoga by Baba Hari Das (Mt. Madonna). She completed advanced Vinyasa training with Shiva Rea and has studied extensively with Sharon Gannon and David Life of Jivamukti Yoga, Mark Whitwell, Ram Dass and Krishna Das. Turner teaches at Exhale in Los Angeles, Pure Yoga in New York City and leads workshops all over the world. Named the “#2 Online Influencer for Stress Relief” by Sharecare.com, Turner’s clients have included Michelle Branch, Tony Horton and Pete Yorn.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 81: Brooke “Not On a Diet’s” Best Week Ever, Louis CK’s Best Show, a Band Workout and How to Shush Chatty Students 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #81

Brooke Birmingham’s “Best Week Ever,” Louis CK Learns About “Fat Girls,” Suzanne from Workout Nirvana

Plus: How to Shush a Constant Talker in Class

brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Sorry to post this so late but I had a few personal events in my life take over my weekend schedule and I am just getting back into the swing of things here. Anyhoo—today I have a few news items to get through and then a request for advice. So let’s do this thing!

  • Brooke Birmingham: Wow! My Blogger Buddy has had quite the week! Brooke is the creator of Brooke Not On a Diet and if you do not know her story then you need to check out her site right away. In short though—I have to say I was completely (and happily) surprised to see that Shape magazine has offered to do a full story on Brooke in their magazine. This was supposed to be an online only feature but now they will be doing an entire article about what it is like to lose a great deal of weight. If you have not seen her Today show appearance—check it out here! http://www.today.com/video/today/55138807#55138807

  • Louis CK “So Did The Fat Girl”: I am not a habitual viewer of the FX TV show Louis but I might have to check it out more often now I am hearing so much praise for his most recent episode “So Did the Fat Lady”( link) that I am going to check out back episodes. Please do yourself a favor a check out the 7-minute clip which features an amazing performance by actress Sarah Baker (if she doesn’t receive an Emmy nomination for this I will lose all hope in humanity.)

  • Suzanne Digre “Workout Nirvana” Band Workout:  I just adore Suzanne Digre of Workout Nirvava and her outstanding workouts including this You Tube clip where she uses a band from Rubberbanditz for an overall full body workout.

  • How to Shush a Class Talker: My friend Tamara of Fit Knit Chick is a group fitness instructor and personal trainer based in the Vancouver area (you know I have a special love for Canadians, right?) She recently wrote about group fitness etiquette and how to deal with students who do NOT SHUT UP! I have had recent incidents in my own classes and honestly want to get your advice on how I should best handle this. What do you to maintain a quiet class? Please help me shush the constant talkers!

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog (forgive the screen grab!)

That’s all I have this week folks—see you next week with a new giveaway! (I know I said that last week but I mean it. NEXT week the giveaways will come back.)

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

“A Petite Powerhouse”

Our cover star is Kathleen Tesori who is not only sponsored by Bodybuilding.com but is also Manger of Supply Chain management with the U. S. Airforce—wow! The 5’ 2” Tesori resides in Salt Lake City and considers working for her country to be a privilege.

Even though she has busy days with the Department of Defense she always makes the point to work out even if for only 20 minutes. The former junk food junkie used to live on corndogs and Mountain Dew (ah—college!) She now eats a very clean diet and totes around her meals in a cooler to and from work.

Kathleen is featured in the “20-Minute Fat-Burning Workout” inside the issue as well.

20 minute workout Oxygen 001

“Your Ultimate Upper Body”

By doing two opposing exercises at the same time you can see powerful effects (such as combining lunges with bicep curls.) Check out some of these moves from trainer Cindy Whitmarsh that will help increase your metabolic burn.

Your Upper Body Workout Oxygen 001

“Portable Pilates”

Oxygen has expert Pilates trainer Juliet Kaska of JK Zen Fitness show how we can all do this workout from home. (Note to self—get this equipment, stat!)

Portable Pilates 001
“Fine-Tune Your Butt”

With a headline like that—guess what muscles you will be working with this feature? These exercises were developed by Simone De La Rue whom I completely adore. (Hi Simone!)

Glute workout in Oxygen 001
“Pink Power!”

I am not much of a runner (if you ever see me running—ask what the hell is wrong!) Nor am I much of a “pink” girl but this page of pink running gear gives me the happies. (Maybe because Spring has sprung!)

Pink running gear Oxygen mag 001

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Strong Body, Strong Mind” Exercising your body can also help your mind from “warding off dementia to relieving anxiety and depression.”
  • “Eat Smarter to Feel Great” If you have problems with inflammation (over here!) changing your diet can help “minimize it’s effects.”

Overall Grade:

A- Lots of good workouts here but some of the other features were less than interesting to me.

Ivanka Trump photographed by James Macari

Shape Cover Star for May 2014:

Ivanka Trump is on the cover and looking fantastic. The busy mom of two kids is a Wharton School grad who just happens to be the Vice President of Development and Acquisitions for the Trump Organization. (Before you yell “nepotism” understand she worked for other companies before joining her father’s office and is known for being hard working and down to earth.)

Ivanka is also a judge on Celebrity Apprentice and credits her mother’s work ethic for making her eager to be both a mom and a professional.

She keeps in shape with regular spin classes and a few mat moves created by her trainer Rhonda Malkin which you can see here:

Ivanka Trump 001

What else is on the May issue of Shape?

“Mix Masters”

I want just about everything on this page but especially the Soul Transform Headphones. (Can someone hook a fit chick up?)

Mix Masters 001

“Have a Ball”

If you are looking for a new workout to try at the gym—check out this soccer-inspired circuit from trainer Scott Piri of Team Expos in Los Angeles.

 Have a Ball 001

“Blaze a Trail”

Summer is finally in our sites and I for one want to go for a nice long hike in the great outdoors. Professional rock climber Katie Lambert offers her best advice to keep safe while enjoying nature live and in person.

Blaze a Trail 001

 “Upward Bound”

And if you need some new gear for your hike…check out this selection!

Upward Bound 001

Shape Summer Shape-Up”

Hey, have you heard of Jillian Michaels? She has a pretty neat workout in this issue.

Jillian Michaels 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “London Calling” Editor in Chief Tara Kraft Lowenstein has moved on to a new life in London with her brand new husband. Good luck in the UK Tara!
  • “Here Comes the Sun” Believe it or not you need to change out your sun lotions every year in order to make sure your skin is safe. Shape has a great selection here for all types of skin types.
  • “Get Phone Smart” Sure we all love our cell phones but they can also be dangerous (stop texting and walking, people!).

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Talking About Hedwig, Laurie David, Amy Schumer and Brooke Not On a Diet 0

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #80

Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Laurie David’s Fed Up & The Family Cooks, The Amazing Amy Schumer

Plus: Knowing When to Say “No” to Publicity

NPH

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I had me a fine and dandy week and hope you did too! Just a few items to get through today and then I will let you go (well—I hope you stick around for my Vlog as well!). The giveaways will be back next week for sure. In the meantime here are my weekly news & notes.

  • Hedwig & The Angry Inch:  In case you are aquatinted with the musical Hedwig & The Angry Inch it is a show that in a more quaint time would be described as “gender bending” but with our more updated understanding on human sexuality and gender identity let’s just Hedwig is about a brave & tragic figure who will rock your socks off. I stupidly did not catch it the first time it was introduced way, way off Broadway in the 90s but the John Cameron Mitchell creation was turned into a film he directed in 2001 and where I first fell in love with the music. Right now it is on Broadway and Neil Patrick Harris is amazing in the part. He sings, dances, acts, tell jokes and interacts with the audience with such gusto. If you are planning to come to NYC over the next few months—beg, steal or borrow tickets to see this show. You will thank me later!

  • Laurie David: Recently I was lucky enough to attend a roundtable discussion with activist and filmmaker Laurie David (she helped produce the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth) and I wrote about my experience for this piece for Fit Bottomed Eats. David is turning her lens on the world of processed foods and the 30-year marketing blitz that has assaulted our concept of the family meal with her new documentary Fed Up. In theaters May 9th!

  • The Amazing Amy Schumer: If you are a Howard Stern fan like me (Baba Boowie!) you have heard the comic Amy Schumer on his show riff about dating, sex, her adventures in standup comedy and body issues. She refuses to act, behave or look like anyone else on television so I incorrectly assumed she was immune to insecurity but this speech she gave last week at the Gloria Steinem gala is the sweetest and saddest commentary on how we treat women in our culture and her fight to remain confident. Am I making it sound boring? It’s not–check out the transcript here! (From New York magazine’s Vulture Blog.)

  • Brooke “Not On a Diet” Keeps Her Shirt Off! I really adore Brooke Birmingham who is a fellow blogger and animal lover. She lost over 172 pounds with hard work and a strong dedicated effort. Recently she was asked by a national magazine to be featured online and she quickly accepted. However, they wanted her to send them a picture of herself in something other than a two-piece suit because they supposedly had a rule about that. (Shaking my head.) Read her story here and be sure to share on Facebook! (So proud of you for saying “no” Brooke!)

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:

That’s all I have this week folks—see you next week with a new giveaway!
