Shape Cover Star for October 2014:

One of Howard Stern’s favorite guests is TV personality Maria Menounos who has a fun spirit and a seriously goofy laugh (I mean that in a good way.)

When Maria was in college she gained almost 40 pounds trying to out-eat most of her dude friends (dude friends are always dangerous, by the way) and now she keeps fit with a sane workout schedule and healthy eating habits.

Maria has a new book out called The Everygirl’s Guide to Diet and Fitness and you can catch her in full “band workout” mode inside the magazine.

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“Form Check: The Squat”

As a trainer I can tell you that if there is one move we observe  to check out the fitness level of a potential client—it’s the squat. I really loved this description on what to look for in a proper squat by Brent Brookbush, D.P.T.

“Shop for a Cause”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month but you should be shopping for cute pink things all year round. This page features items that will support breast cancer charities.

 “Transform Your Trouble Zones”

Shape asked trainer Lisa Kinder of the 10-Minute Solution: High Intensity Interval Training DVDs for her favorite muscle-toning moves. Love this page that focuses on abs…,

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #96

Book vs. Movie Podcast Now in iTunes!

Wanderlust Yoga Festival, Kinky Boots on Broadway, EleVen by Venus

Plus: Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman Giveaway!

Enter to win this book!

Enter to win this book!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Last week I was not feeling well and could not film my regular Vlog but this week I am BACK and with a whole new giveaway. New York has been enjoying a lovely “last gasp of summer’ weather and I have been sure to get out there and enjoy it.

  • Book vs. Movie Is Now on iTunes!! I have been talking about a the podcast that Margo P. and I have created called Book vs. Movie podcast where we talk about books that have been turned into movies and discuss the differences between them. Our past episodes include Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Forrest GumpThe Help and The Firm.  All are rollicking good chats (though episodes 2 & 6 are haunted by technical issues) and now you can subscribe to us on iTunes! If you don’t mind terribly—please take a moment to subscribe as we are trying to get on to iTunes’ “New & Noteworthy” char. Namaste! Also, if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page. (Thank you!)
  • So What’s the Next Book for Book vs. Movie podcast? Glad you asked because it is none other than The Princess Bride which was written as a novel by William Goldman back in the 70s and is now the movie classic we all know and love. Podcast to drop in the next couple of weeks!
  • Wanderlust Festival Post in Fit Bottomed Girls: A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn and my feature is now up on Fit Bottomed Girls with the greatest headline I will ever come up with again: The Om Before The Storm (damn, I am clever!)
  • Kinky Boots on Broadway: I have been hearing for months that the Kinky Boots musical is a must-see but I resisted. Sure, the movie was fun but how would it work on Broadway? Well let me tell you—when you have Harvey Fierstein and music by Cindi Lauper you have a magical experience at hand. I absolutely LOVED this show and recommend you catch it when it comes to your town.
  • My newest giveaway! Author Katy Bowman has a Blog http://www.katysays.com/ which is described as “witty and science-y” (and it is!) so today I am thrilled to offer her latest book Move Your DNA which you can learn more about below on my Blog and lower down this post. Good luck!
  • EleVen By Venus: Recently I joined the ambassador teach for EleVen by Venus (Venus Williams’ new athletic line) and in the Vlog today I am wearing a divine top–the Vintage Floral Hail Mary Tank which you all need to get today. (Let me know if you want a discount code for your first purchase!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

More Information about Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman, M.S.

MOVE YOUR DNA: Biomechanist’s new book reveals why healthy people don’t just exercise,

they move, why treadmills are movement “junk-food and how natural movements benefit our health right down to our DNA.

Seattle, WA – September 15, 2014: Diseases of captivity aren’t just for orcas. What happens when you take animals out of their biological habitat and stick them into office cubicles, cars and shoes? According to author and biomechanics scientist Katy Bowman, modern humans have manifested so-called “diseases of affluence” for a rather simple reason. We are not moving our bodies in all the ways that nature intended, instead repeating only a few postures and movements with little variation. In her science-based yet easy to understand book, ”Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement”, Bowman challenges many of the most widely held beliefs about getting healthy. “Move Your DNA” is available in trade paperback October 1 from Propriometrics Press on Amazon for $24.95 (ISBN: 9780989653947); ebook is $9.99. An audiobook with mileage markers to encourage walking while listening will be out September 15. For more information visit www.moveyourdna.com.

“Groundbreaking information with specific instructions for how to live well in your body. Katy Bowman is a practical genius.” – Christiane Northrup, M.D\

Bowman’s explains our need for natural movement right down to the cellular level. Readers will come to understand why our modern lifestyle doesn’t work for our bodies and how optimal movement can help restore health and reduce pain. Exercise as we know it isn’t always the right answer. “Move Your DNA” contains the corrective exercises, habit modifications, and simple lifestyle changes we need to make in order to free ourselves from disease and discover our naturally healthy, reflex driven selves.

In the book Bowman explores:

Whether Kegels do more harm than good

If standing is just as bad as sitting

The naked truth about barefoot running

Why fit people need the same joint replacements and back surgeries as couch potatoes

The myth that we need cardio exercise

What we can learn from orcas and their floppy dorsal fins (a la documentary “Blackfish”)

Bowman argues that movement is like nutrition, with varied and essential requirements. Every type of natural movement provides essential information right down to the cells, and even influences genetic

expression.

{Just a note—Katy Bowman is not sponsoring this post and her publisher will ship directly to the winner. This giveaway is only available to folks in the Continental United States.}

If you want to win three rolls of Move Your DNA featured in the Vlog above you must do the following (Continental United States only, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win “Move Your DNA” by @alignedandwell from @brooklynfitchik”
  • If you haven’t already—let me know you are subscribing to my You Tube channel

I will pick one winner at random on Monday, October 6, 2014 at NOON Eastern Time and contact them directly. Good luck!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “All of Me’ 50-Minute Ride 0

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“All of Me” 50-Minute Ride

John Legend

John Legend

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Are you ready for a new playlist? This time I wanted to return to a few songs that had previously been “retired” from my classes plus introduce a couple of tunes you may not have heard before. This is a 50-minute interval “ride” that you can use on your next run, bike ride or treadmill workout that will help keep you motivated to keep moving.

So let’s get started and as always—send me your favorite song suggestions!

  • All of Me (Tiësto’s Birthday Treatment): John Legend

This is one of those songs that I find myself singing along to every time it comes on the radio and grateful I work from home alone so no one can hear me as I couldn’t hold a note with a handle. Anyhoo, here is a pumped-up of version to get your workout started.

  • Leopard Print Pill Box Hat: Beck

I am a big Bob Dylan fan and this might be my favorite cover of a Dylan song to ever. (Okay—All Along the Watcher by Jimi Hendrix is a strong number two.)

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

I pray she did not write this for Justin Bieber… that little creep.

  • Breathing Underwater: Metric

Yesterday two of my boot camp dudes complained this song made “no sense” because “you can’t breathe underwater.” (Sigh—try to inject some culture in people and they get so literal!)

  • The World I Know: Collective Soul

This is one of those songs that always reminds me of the mid-90s (Sigh, again.)

  • Hypnotize: The Notorious B.I.G.

Be sure to use the “clean” version if you are playing this in a class!!

  • Let Forever Be: The Chemical Brothers

Noel Gallagher of Oasis co-wrote this tune and sings the vocals which is why it is so awesome. “How does it feel like—to wake up in the sun? How does it feel like—to shine on everyone?” Love it!

  • Paralyzer: Finger Eleven

This song gets the whole room to work harder and sing along.

  • Left Hand Free: alt-J

This is a brand new song from an indie based in Leeds, England and it made stop and take notice the first time I heard it.

  • Came Back Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor came back from a long absence writing movie soundtracks to resurrect the Nine Inch Nails last year and this is my favorite song from that album. Perfect for interval sprints.

  • Sirens: The Pack A.D.

This band is from Vancouver and they can rock out.

  • Ring of Fire: Social Distortion

This is an example of a song that I used to play weekly and then just had to stop as it was starting to get on my nerves which is just NOT okay. Glad to be able to enjoy it again and hope you do as well! (The live version in the video is super-fun.)

  • Free: Phish

Oh stop your complaining Phish haters—this is a FANTASTIC song and you freaking well know it!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #95

“Riding the Runway” with Reebok, The Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn

Plus: The Super-Groovy KT Tape Giveaway!!

 mainpropink_3 mainpropurple_3 mainprosonicblue mainproyellow_3

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Fall is in the air and at this time of year I find myself in the mood for fresh, new ideas. I actually care about this New York Fashion Week (versus the one that takes place in the middle of winter) and my thoughts turn to settling down in the evenings and snuggling with my kitties.

This week I delved into “The Help,” went to a rather usual fashion show and attended the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn. So much to discuss so let’s get to it shall we?

  • Book vs. Movie Episode 5 “The Help”: The power “Margos” plunged ahead with our fifth episode Book vs. Movie podcast and this time we talked about Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help which was turned into a movie in 2011. So which did we like more? The novel or the film? Check our podcast to find out. In the meantime we are hoping to have them available on Stitcher and iTunes soon (wish us luck!)

Also—please make sure to ‘like” our Facebook page. (Thank you!)

  • Ride the Runway with Reebok: On assignment for Fit Bottomed Girls I went to the Reebok Riding the Runway which was basically a spin class with a fashion show involved. Cyc Fitness created the spin workout that was held at the Reebok Fithub in Union Square. During the ride we were treated to a fashion show which was pretty damn cool and I will send you the link for the full story as soon as it runs.
  • Wanderlust Yoga Festival Brooklyn: This past Saturday my beloved Brooklyn was home to the first yoga/5 k festival and before the rains came upon us—everyone in attendance was treated to a meditation session by yoga superstar Elena Brower. I will tell you more about my meeting with Elena Brower at the press conference (she is so amazing) in the Vlog below. (Story to also be featured on Fit Bottomed Girls.
  • KT Tape Giveaway: My giveaway this week is in honor of my entire runner and tri-athlete friends who might be feeling dinged up and injured right now–KT Tape (Kinesiology Therapeutic Tape) You can win three rolls of the tape by following the rules below. (Continental United States only, thanks!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

About KT Tape:

KT TAPE is lightweight, comfortable to wear, and can be used for hundreds of common injuries such as lower back pain, knee pain, shin splints, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tennis elbow.  It is applied along muscles, ligaments, and tendons (soft tissue) to provide a lightweight, external support that helps people remain active while recovering from injuries. It creates neuromuscular feedback (called proprioception) that inhibits (relaxes) or facilitates stronger firing of muscles and tendons. This feedback creates support elements without the bulk and restriction commonly associated with wraps and heavy bracing.

KT Tape Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/kttape

{Just a note—KT tape is not sponsoring this post and will ship directly to the winner. This giveaway is only available to folks in the Continental United States.}

If you want to win three rolls of KT Tape featured in the Vlog above you must do the following (Continental United States only, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win @KTTape from @brooklynfitchik”
  • If you haven’t already—let me know you are subscribing to my You Tube channel
