Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Since this is a holiday weekend I have decided to keep things short and sweet and get to the good stuff right away. Next week I will be back with a new Vlog when I can promise to NOT look bloated from too many holiday meals. Well, maybe I can’t promise THAT but I will be here no matter what. Pinkie Swear!

Anyhoo—let’s do it!

  • Rock n Roll Half Marathon Brooklyn Announcement: The Rock ‘n’ Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon has been announced for next October (2015) and will begin at Barclay’s Center and finish in Prospect Park. All kinds of top notch musicians and bands will be playing along the route and that may be the one thing to get me excited about a run. So this means there is a half marathon taking place right in my backyard. I can walk there and walk home. So what I am really saying is—I am thinking of signing up for this half marathon even though I am crappiest runner in the word. Are any of you out there interested in joining me? Let me know and we will get a training schedule going on. Really! I mean it. Please think about signing up with me (pretty please!)
  • Fitbloggin NY Meet Up: This coming Saturday, December 6th at 2 pm will be the time and date for NYC (tri-state) area Fitbloggin’ peeps to get together. If you belong to the secret group on Facebook you know the place we are meeting. If you don’t but still want to join send me an e-mail and let’s chat. brooklynfitchick@gmail.com

Shape Cover Star for December 2014:

Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) is a busy gal who tours with her equally famous brother Derek, and is creating a show with him called Blackpool which will be a ballroom dancing drama. In addition to her dancing & singing career Julianne acted in the Footloose reboot and (my personal favorite) the “so bad it is good” Safe Haven. (Get it on Netflix if you ever have the chance. She is fine in the part but the script is amazingly cheesy and awesome!)

The multi-hyphentate is also a workout fiend who keeps in top shape by getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, eating healthy and dancing as often as she can (even on top of her two-hour shows!)

When home in Los Angeles she prefers works with professional trainer Astrid McGuire and you check out some of their workout in the pages of the December issue.

However, I know it is a fantastic workout and this program developed by Punk Rope creator Tim Haft looks like it would whip anyone into fighting form,

Plus: Weight Watchers Stability Ball Kit Giveaway!

ww stability ball kit 3d

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all? Are you good? Me? Thank you for asking—my week started out a big bucket of suck and ended kind of “meh” for me.

Have you ever attempted a challenge and then thought “Can I really be this lame?” I had an unfortunate encounter with someone that I don’t want to dwell on too much but let’s just say their demeanor towards me was the cherry on top of the sh*t sundae that is 2014. Yep, this year has not been that great for me with tons of personal stuff going on that I don’t like to expose to you fine people.

Yet every day I get out of bed and keep working on goals. I have an idea I want to manifest in my life. It’s been tougher than I expected but I WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. It may take another year of ten years but I am going to bring my dream to life! Whenever I feel broken down, ridiculed, humiliated I remind myself that hell—I am STILL HERE. This is my theme song sung by Jarvis Cocker (written be Stephen Sondheim) and I want to share it with any of you out there that could use a boost (You’re welcome!)

Okay now that we all feel empowered; let’s get on to this week’s news and giveaway!

  • Wobble Board Self-Challenge: This is my third week using my Go Fit wobble board whenever I am checking e-mails at my desk. I have a standing desk which I know is better for me than sitting all day but I still tend to stoop over and my posture is suffering.  Overall my experience is that the Wobble Board has been an excellent way for me to proprioceptively challenge my body while still getting work done. Win/win! (No one paid me to say this by the way. I bought it with my own money and this is my true opinion.)
  • Tracy Anderson—the “No Certification Owning Celebrity Personal Trainer” Thinks Spin Classes Make Bulky Thighs: If you know me—you know I have some issues with Tracy Anderson and her offbeat ideas on training and nutrition. First the woman instructs her female clients should never use a weight heavier than 3 pounds because it will give create big arms. (Seriously.) She also sold a diet program a few years ago which was in essence promoting deprivation. Now she is telling the Daily Mail that Spin classes will make you gain weight! This is utter nonsense and it makes me crazy. I will include a sample of her “Dynamic Eating Plan” that was supposed to help you lose weight and detox (another word I hate.) Take a look at it for yourself and tell me if this would satisfy you after working out for her recommended 60-90 minutes per day EVERY DAY!

Tracy Anderson Plan 001

Let me confess that I do rather enjoy her mat routines (leg lifts) even though they kill me. She is an interesting choreographer and seems to really put a great deal of effort of trying to make the old look new which is not easy.  However, her fitness advice is not always backed by science so keep that in mind when reading her pronouncements.

What else do I want to talk about today?

  • Do You Know About “Text Neck?” Also from the Daily Mail is this article talking about how poor posture and stooping your neck down to check your phone will add up to 60 pounds of pressure on your neck! That is not good in case you are wondering. Compensations like this can cause major health issues so please take the time and make sure your head and neck are in proper alignment throughout the day!
  • Key & Peele’s Aerobics Challenge: For all of you who love the 1987 clip of the Crystal Light Aerobics Championship that hit the internet this past week you have to check out this hilarious (and very dark) spoof from Key & Peele which is accurate down to the use of the music.
  • Book vs. Movie “Bridget Jones’s Diary”: So what book are we tackling next on the Book vs. Movie podcast? Margo P. (aka “She’s Nacho Mama” and me will talk about the hit book that came out in 1995 (!) plus the beloved film starring initially controversial choice Renee Zellweger so get your granny panties ready for a good chat. (Podcast drop date to come soon!) In the meantime feel free to “like” our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. (Namaste!)
  • Weight Watchers Stability Ball Kit Giveaway: Do you want to win a Weight Watchers Stability Ball Kit? Well then check out the Vlog below and find out how to win! (Continental U.S.only)

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Shut Up and Drive” Ride! 4

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Shut Up and Drive Ride”

"Yo Margo! Let's hang out at the Barclay Center!"

“Yo Margo! Let’s hang out at the Barclay Center!”

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I love putting together playlists. The ability to be a coach while also indulging in my “secret DJ” side has brought me so much indescribable joy in my life that I could honestly when I hear a student say “I just love your music!” (Heart is beating faster and spirit is now soaring!)

So when I started to post them up on this here Blog I just sort of wanted to place to just PUT them. I honestly did not expect anyone to actually pay attention but have crazily formed relationships with instructors all over the world who have added some of my favorite tunes to their class playlists.

It makes this Fit Chick so happy to introduce Metric and Dear Rouge to other instructors and now I am asking YOU to send me your favorite song suggestions. Bring –em on and let us all dominate the world with one playlist at a time!

Let’s Go!

  • Shut Up and Drive: Rhianna

Rhianna is sort of a new obsession for me. I am just digging her style and grooving to her tunes as often as I can. This is a fun one to play at the top of the class to get their attention and get them focused on a high energy workout.

  • I Heard I Had: Dear Rouge

I am sort of obsessed with this duo from Vancouver who won a ton of radio competitions in the Great White North. Now I need to help them break big here in the States!

  • Swamp: Talking Heads

This is my opportunity to get just a wee bit self-indulgent and play one of the my favorite songs form one of my favorite concert films (Stop Making Sense) of all time.

  • I Will Wait: Mumford & Sons

Normally I am not a “banjo” kind of gal but this song is fun to get people moving their butts faster to keep up to the beat.

  • No Church in the Wild: Kanye West & Jay Z

I love, love, love this song so much and appreciate the Frank Ocean singing along with Kanye and Jay Z pretending to be bad asses.

  • Jingo: Santana

Okay gang—if you need a song to rev people up and push them—try this one from Santana that features a tribal drum beat that is off the hook!

  • Butterfly: Crazy Town

No idea what this song is even about but it is pretty damn great!

  • Chelsea Dagger: The Fratellis

I just got turned on t this band from Scotland and this tune makes me want to pump my fist in the air (in a good way, of course.)

  • Gold Guns Girls: Metric

This is another Canadian band I am determined to make more famous—one class at a time.

  • Poker Face: Lady Gaga

It’s been a while since I featured the shy and bashful LG in a playlist so why not today? (If you get a chance—go to You Tube and look up Christopher Walken reading the lyrics to Poker Face—it’s a gem!)

  • Tonight Tonight: Smashing Pumpkins

I like to use this song for a climb that finished with a big flourish—try it and see for yourself!

  • Heart is a Drum: Beck

A really dreamy tune and perfect for a cool down from the cooler than ever Beck.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 102: Amazing Fighters of Sexism, NYC Fit Bloggin Meet Up and More! 1

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #102

The Amazing Erin Brown and The Awesome Karl Stefanovic,

 NYC Fitbloggin Tweet-Up Date!!

Plus: Book vs. Movie Podcast “Wizard of Oz” Is Live!

Me

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone today? I had a crazy busy weekend and could not seem to find the time to get to this post but darn it—I am going to make it happen today. This week I want to present a couple of my favorite news stories and posts from this past week plus I drop a hint about the next NYC Meet-Up for Fitbloggin Peeps. Oh, and we have a new episode of Book Vs Movie where we talk about the Merry Old land of Oz so let’s get to it—shall we!

  • The Fabulous Erin Brown: I am a longtime fan of Erin Brown who is an inspirational gal who describes herself as “ Writer. Lecturer. Wellness junkie. Bad ass mother. Woman. I am Erin Brown.” Erin is a feminist and is a tireless supporter of women and protector of body images. If you want to learn about this fantastic lady and why I worship her…check out this post in particular. Erin is out to bash the body-shamers to bits!

  • The Awesome Aussie Karl Stefanovic: If you don’t know about Karl—he is the host of Australia’s version of the Today Show and this righteous dude was tired of hearing his female co-hosts get criticized for their appearance so he took on the task of wearing the same exact suit every day for a year (he only changed his tie) to prove that men are judges far less harshly for how they look. Well guess what—not ONE person noticed he was wearing the same outfit every day. No one. You can read all about his here from the Buzz Feed article and check out this clip from his colleague Lisa Wilkinson who spoke out about sexism in the media industry.

  • NYC-Fitbloggin Meet-Up: I am a little nervous about posting this as the Fitbloggin group on Facebook is “super-secret” but if you are a member—I am setting up a drinks date for Saturday, December 6th at 2 pm for the NYC area fitbloggin peeps. If you want to join us go check out the details on Facebook!

  • Book vs. Movie Takes on “The Wizard of Oz” The lovely Margo P. and I had a fun chat last week for our Book vs. Movie podcast talking about the crazy differences between the book and movie The Wizard of Oz which you can listen to by subscribing to us on iTunes! Our next episode will be about the “Rom Com” classic Bridget Jones’ Diary. Can’t wait to dive into that one!

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

Daphne Oz who is a co-host of The Chew and author of Relish and in this interview she talks about what is it like to try to bounce back after giving birth to her daughter Philomena in February.

Daphne is not interested in being celebrity magazine cover star that loses her baby weight in two weeks. She would rather eat right, breast feed her daughter and take a healthier approach to living life than worrying about “getting her old body back” thankyouverymuch.

In this issue we also get some of her favorite cooking tips and recipes as well.

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

“Be a Speed Machine”

If you are planning to keep to treadmill workouts over the holidays you might want to take along this workout from David Silk of Equinox and plan to get a good sweat going.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 101: “Wobble Board” Challenge, Spin Class Fail, Yoga DVD Giveaway & More! 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #101

My Go Fit Wobble Board Challenge, Spin Class Video Fail, Students With Body Dysmorphia (Fellow Instructors—Please Help Me!)

Book Vs Movie Podcast Takes on “Oz”

Plus: Element: 5-Day Yoga DVD Giveaway!

Enter to win this yoga DVD!

Enter to win this yoga DVD!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am back in the saddle of Blogging and Vlogging and have SO much to tell you all that I think I am going to burst! It’s been a hectic week here and I have much to share (including a new yoga DVD giveaway) so let’s get to it shall we?

  • My Go Fit Wobble Board Self-Challenge: For almost three years now I have been working at a standing desk which I thought would help my core but lately realize that I am still not engaging myself proprioceptively—in other words my sense of balance is hardly ever challenged and my shoulders are showing signs of not-cute stooping. YIKES! So I am challenging myself to try and balance on a Go Fit wobble board whenever I am checking e-mails at my desk. It’s been two days so far and let me tell y’all—standing on a wobble board is hard as hell! So far I have found it to be a humbling experiment but I am going to report back to you all in one month to let you know my progress with it. (Shoot–now I am making myself accountable, huh?)
  • Whoa-This is a Spin Class FAIL: I have seen this video of a super-rowdy spin class all over the place and boy do I hate to be the spoil sport here but this is NOT a regulation indoor cycling class. I have been teaching for almost 10 years now and can spot terrible form all over the room (with WAY too much stress upper back/trapezius muscles) and the moves are just not safe! Okay, yes—they are exercising and having fun. The spirit in the room is truly inspiring, but I have to say that beware of any spin class where you are out of the saddle and doing crazy moves. (And for love of all that is healthy and sane in this world—enough with the damn “push-ups” on handlebars!) I go into more detail in the Vlog below on why this video is a big bucket of NOPE in my book.
  • Students With Possible Body Dysmorphia: Fellow instructors please help me! I have a student who takes my boot camp class who is so upset about wanting to lose five pounds she wants to drop my class because I am not “intense” enough for her. Let me make this clear—if I thought I was the issue I would walk away and wish her well. But this young lady does NOT need to lose weight and I am worried she has body dysmorphia. I am not her therapist but feel a responsibility towards her. Any advice for me on how I should handle this situation? Thank you in advance!!

And now for more fun topics!

  • Book vs. Movie “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”: Up next on the Book vs. Movie podcast Margo P. (aka “She’s Nacho Mama”) and I are taking on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (the 1900 book and the 1939 classic film) with the episode to drop on iTunes and Sticher this Friday evening November 14th. Let me say this—if you think the book that was the source for movie The Wizard of Oz was sweet & fun you have NO idea how truly twisted the Frank L. Baum classic is. So hang tight for that episode and if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. (Namaste!)
  • 5-Day Yoga DVD Giveaway: Do you promise yourself to make more time for yoga and yet can never seem to fit it into your day? (Hanging my head in shame..) Then this is the giveaway you have been waiting for because today I am giving one copy of Element: 5-Day Yoga to one lucky person this week. Check out how to win from the Vlog below and good luck to all of you. (Well—the Continental U.S. peeps as they are the only ones who can enter this giveaway!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

More Information about the Element: 5-Day Yoga DVD giveaway:

NEW “ELEMENT: 5 DAY YOGA” DVD OFFERS LOTS OF YOGA AND LOTS OF OPTIONS!

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Muscle & Fitness Hers:

  • “Rockin’ Rockettes” Two members of the elite Radio City Christmas Spectacular dance squad talk about their off-season training and how they make those eye-level kicks look so damn perfect.
  • Ryan McDonagh: The New York Rangers defensemen is a fan of the Women’s U.S. Olympic hockey team, eats tons of bison burgers to keep lean and spends the off-season doing charity work with his wife and mother-in-law. So he is pretty much perfect in my eyes.
  • “Kick Up Your Fat Burn” IFBB Bikini Pro Stacey Alexander offers tips on how to up your kick boxing game. .
  • “3 Tips for a Healthier Winter” Once again I am being reminded that I need to get my flu shot!
  • “Winning Big” Brand new Biggest Loser trainer Jen Widerstorm (http://www.teamjennifer.com) was inspired to get fit by her body builder dad and later starred on American Gladiators playing “Pheoenix.” Jen is also on the cover and offers her own butt-kicking workout featured in this issue.

 Health

November 2014

Health Cover Star for November:

Jillian Michaels is on the cover and inside the magazine she talks about her various controversies with the show The Biggest Loser, her busy life with partner Heidi Rhoades and two kids, her favorite guru (Suze Orman) as well as her struggle to deal with her sexuality.

Her favorite piece of advice comes from Orman who said when you are dealing with confrontation “fight fire with water” which I really kind of like.

Jillian offers her own quick “Total-Body Shred” workout you can on your own over the holidays—see!

So what else is inside the November Health?

“You Can Muster a Tough Pose”

The one yoga pose I have yet to figure out is the “Crow” so I love this illustrated “how-to” from Kristin McGee.

“10 Smart Sweet Swaps”

If you are looking to cut back on sugar & carbs this guide from Cooking Light magazine (who gave them to the good folks at Health) featured here is real helpful.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Reproductive System: A User’s Manual” The editors of Health talk about your lady parts in a clear and concise way which I totally appreciate.
  • “Activewear to Wear Everywhere” Really cute fashion pages on what you can wear from the gym throughout the day.
  • “Your Gut Can Make You Slim” There are “good gut” foods and those you should avoid if inflammation is a concern. Check out this feature if you have tummy troubles.
  • “Fend Off Any Flu” This reminds me—I need to get my flu shot!
  • “Six Medical Breakthroughs That Matter” The latest technological advances that can help improve your health. .

Just as in years past the event came with the MOST insane goodie bag. In fact, it is such a big bag full of cool things that I just knew that I had to share the loot with one of my wonderful readers. (You’re welcome!)

BUT FIRST!

I want to say congratulations to all of the incredible athletes who completed the NYC Marathon on Sunday. It was in the 40 and windy as hell here and I happily cheered thousands on though I must admit you will NEVER see me doing the same. (I am just NOT a runner.)

Here are just a few of my friends who ran yesterday:

Toni C. of Running, Living, Loving, Sheryl of SherylYvette.com and Samantha Shelton of Fitness magazine.

So damn proud of each and every one of you! Next time I will be better about letting people know where to find me on the route…

Okay, so back to this week’s giveaway.

Take a gander at just some some of the yummy treats you can win!

You want to see them up close and personal? Well then check out my Vlog now!

{Just a note—No one is sponsoring this giveaway. I will pick the winner and send to them directly. This giveaway is only available in the Continental United States.}
