BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Smooth Sailin’” Playlist (50 Minute-Ride)

prince-purple-rain-ws-710 (1)

“Dearly beloved

We are gathered here today

to get through this thing called life.”

As I am writing this playlist out I can’t help but think about how many super-amazing people have died this year so far including:

  • Prince
  • David Bowie
  • Lemmy
  • Garry Shandling
  • Glenn Frey
  • Doris Roberts
  • Alan Rickman
  • Michelle McNamara (truecrimediary.com)

2016 is turning out to be a brutal year but I am going to try and keep it light and breezy with this week’s mix of tunes from different decades to hopefully get your heart pumping and your booty shaking. Thanks so much for checking out my Blog.

Let me know what you think and remember—I need song suggestions, always. So be sure to post them in the comments below!

Thanks!

  • Smooth Sailin’: Leon Bridges

I first heard this song tearing down the highway on Route 17 in Santa Cruz and can’t seem to get it out of my head. I love the beat and how truly groovy it makes me feel.

  • Fire: Jimi Hendrix

One of Prince’s biggest guitar heroes is Jimi Hendrix so I felt like including him in today’s warm-up would be what the Purple One declare as “groovy.”

(No decent videos for this one, sorry!)

  • We Go the Beat: The Go-Go’s

Every single time I play this song it makes me want to watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High all over again (in the best possible way.)

  • I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man: Prince

This is by far my favorite prince song of all time and the 6-minute version contains a smokin’ hot guitar solo. (But the 3 ½ minute version is perfect for spin classes.)

  • Boys Wanna Be Her: Peaches

When I want to get the most out of my students with the HIIT (High Intensity Intervals) I put on some Peaches and make them move. Works every time.

  • Freedom! ‘90: George Michael

Key and Peele’s Keanu movie has me all kinds of excited because it features them, cute cats and music by George Micheal. Win/win, people!

  • Safe and Sound: Capital Cities

If there is a bouncier and more fun tune that exists—it will be too damn much for me.

  • Everlong: Foo Fighters

I love this song just as much now as I did when it came out 20 (!) years ago.

  • I Gotta Feeling: The Black Eyed Peas

Have yet to reach maximum number of times I can listen to this song in a week. Once again—I am a sucker for bouncy and fun.

  • Black Gold: Soul Asylum

Speaking of artists from Minnesota—this band is always a treat to see live if you ever get the opportunity.

  • Never Let You Go: Third Eye Blind

Probably mentioned this before—but this is my favorite Third Eye Blind song. Not the big hit about meth heads that goes on at least one minute too long.

  • Bamboleo: Gipsy Kings

Supposedly there is an English version of this out there in the world but for my money—the Spanish version kicks ass!

  • Steal My Sunshine: Len

A perfect little cool down song from this one-hit wonder by from this group from Canada.

That’s it for me this time. Now go out there and get your own workout in!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes: Getting More “Zen” in My Life, AFFA Certs and Podcast News 13

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes April 2016

Gaining More Zen In My Life, Looking for AFAA Certs, Fit Bottomed Girls Articles, and “Book Vs. Movie” Rocking the iTunes the Charts

Look at Us! Top 300 out of many, many thousands!

Look at Us! Top 300 out of many, many thousands!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

A Busy Margo is an Unwell Margo:

I hate people who complain how busy they are. It’s a major pet peeve of mine.  Like, “please feel sorry/be jealous about how much I have going on in my life.” It’s obnoxious and not helpful at all.

Of course, life can get really complicated at times and say during tax season you will be super-pressed for time getting your forms and receipts together. Or during the holidays getting your gifts ready and prepping for travel with the family will leave you feeling stressed. But people who constantly humble/brag how busy they are make me want to scream. (Does anyone else remember the Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson song of that name?)

Well, lately I have been struggling with being overscheduled and having too many things due at once. I try to be cheerful about it when I describe my days/weekends to people but lately I have been finding it very hard to relax in the evening. I will start pacing my apartment when my work day is done (I work mostly from home) and if the weather is decent I will run an errand to get some air. Most mornings I teach fitness so I don’t need an extra workout.

Then a friend recommended I try meditation which has been a bugaboo for me for many, many years. I have an “unquiet” mind that struggles to find focus and frankly I am getting sick of it. I want to learn to meditate and hopefully I will learn to relax and take better care of my mental health.

Soooo, I am pleased to announce that I am going to be making monthly installments to a new site called Fit Bottomed Zen where I will discuss the latest in mediation trends and will give updates on my progress. Wish me luck and if you have any advice for how I can get more “Zen” in my life, please leave tips/suggestions below.

Anyhoo, back to my life the past few weeks…

AFAA credits:

Are any of you fitness instructors? Do you have the same struggle as me to get in your credits every two years to keep your certification? Mine just expired and I now have to fit in so many online classes to get my credits in. Are there any courses you recommend I take? I was thinking pre-natal and post-menopausal women would be good for my group fitness certification (taking care of different generations of women!)

Have YOU taken any classes from AFAA or IDEA lately that you think was extra cool/helpful—please let me know! I am struggling to fit it into my busy schedule! (Hardy Har Har)

Fit Bottomed Girls Hits:

As some of you know—I am a NYC contributor for the popular fitness Blog Fit Bottomed Girls and this month I have had some articles featured there including:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News:

Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and after 15 months worth of shows and struggling to find our way in a male-dominated world. Well guess what—we are in the top 300 podcast for TV & Movies!!! (Out of a hundred thousand if that gives you any perspective.) We are very excited about this milestone and we are also looking for suggestions for book/movie adaptations. So if you have any suggestions—please let me know in the comments below or email us at bookversusmoviepodcast@gmail.com

Whew–that’s it for me today!  I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Happy Spring Everyone!
