“Julie & Julia”

The Julie Powell Book vs. The Nora Ephron Film

Is it us, or does the very suggestion of reading and watching this best selling book and popular film make you crave a life in Paris or what?!  The Margos are back with a full episode talking about Julie Powell’s 2005 Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen which was based on her 2002 Blog “The Julia & Julia Project.

Julie went from NYC cubicle drone to a popular food blogger in a short span of time when she chronicled her year’s journey into cooking every single recipe in Julia Child’s masterpiece Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

Nora Ephron wrote and directed the 2009 film starring Amy Adams and Meryl Streep. It seems people are divided on which part of the film they prefer. (Oh, let’s be honest–it’s “Julia and Paul” by a landslide!)

But how different is the book “Julie” to the cinema version versus the real live woman who wrote Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession chronicling her affair on her husband and journey into meat cutting?

The Margos get very meta in this episode where try to make sense out of all of this craziness between what we assume about Julie Powell in the book and the Nora Ephron version we get in the movie.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The tone of the book versus the movie directed by the amazing Nora Ephron.
  • Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci as Julia & Paul Child and the incredible love story of the characters they play.
  • Amy Adams‘ winsome portrayal of Julie Powell.
  • The FOOD in every scene!
  • Our desire to move to Paris. (Mais, oui!)
  • The importance of New York City as a backdrop to the story post 9/11.
  • Discussing Julia Childs’ reaction to the Blog. (Big hint, she was NOT a fan!)
  • We touch a bit on Cleaving as Margo D. became kind of obsessed with Julie Powell’s marriage after hearing about the aftermath of the movie on her relationship.
  • Plus, My Life in France is mentioned which is the story about Julia and Paul’s years in France (1948-1954) based on the many letters he wrote to his brother.

Book Vs. Movie “The Mist” Recap Ep: 4 Plus, Top 5 Stephen King Heroes 0

Book Vs. Movie Podcast

Stephen King Bonus Ep:”The Mist” Recap

Episode 4 “Pequod”

Plus. Top 5 “Stephen King Heroes”

Welcome to episode 4 of the Stephen King’s The Mist TV series and in this special bonus ep of the Book Vs. Movie podcast Margo D. and Deana of the Twisted Philly podcast offer their weekly recap of the Spike TV production.

Now we are at episode 4 titled “Pequod” which is the name of the whaling ship in Herman Melville’s  Moby Dick and it was named for the Pequot tribe that was based in New England.

This episode has a bit of everything– paranoia, mist beasts, foul language, dead kids and a little bit of “end of time/wrath of God”-type stuff. The action takes place in three places: A gas station, the mall and the church and people are at various levels of stressed out and frightened.

In essence for each location the following is happening:

The Gas Station: Kevin (Morgan Spector), Mia (Danica Curcic), Bryan (Ozekie Morro) and Adrian (Russell Posner) can’t seem to get their car moving so they meet up at a gas station. There they find Clay (Teagle F. Bougere) who is armed and knows Kevin because Eve is his son;s teacher. Clay wants to stay and he gives his survivalist care to the gang. (He thinks he will reunite with his son at the station. Poor Clay!)

The Mall:

Eve (Alyssa Sutherland) confesses she is glad Kevin isn’t there because she blames him for Alex’s (Gus Birney) rape. Alex takes a young child to the bookstore to hang out and forget their troubles for a bit. The game show bros think it would be a fine idea to get a harpoon and bring the dead bodies from the parking lot. The mist shows up and causes one death and one bro getting kicked out for good. Also, the mist has no interest in Alex (!)

Church:

Father Romanov (Dan Butler) thinks it is the end of times and wants his new parishioners to join him in fighting the mist with faith and prayer. Natalie (Frances Conroy) thinks a spider she caught in a jar is God. Father Romanov thinks that is bunk and squashes it.

Topics covered :

  • Is the group correct in getting rid of bro Vic(Erik Knudsen)?
  • Why take a little girl and not a teenager?
  • Is there something wrong with Eve and Kevin’s relationship?
  • Why is Natalie breaking down so fast?
  • Should Clay have joined them in leaving the gas station?

Plus, Margo & Deana pick their top 5 “Stephen King Heroes!”

Not Fade Away Podcast Ep 2: Aaliyah 0

Not Fade Away Podcast

Ep 2: Aaliyah

Welcome to the second episode of the Not Fade Away podcast! This time we are getting to know R&B goddess Aaliyah who sadly passed away in 2001 and the age of 22. I am lucky enough to be friends with someone who worked for Aaliyah for several years–Michelle Cramer.

I invited Michelle over to talk about her time with the Hip Hop queen and am so thankful for her input. In this show we really get to know the sweet person who was so beloved by her family, peers and most of all her devoted fans. I really want to take a moment and thank her for being so generous with her memories. She really poured her heart out talking about her late friend.

In this ep we discuss:

  • Aaliyah’s musical upbringing (she was related to Gladys Knight!)
  • Her insistence on  being a good role model to her fans.
  • The rather unfortunate rumors/truth about her relationship to R. Kelly.
  • Her rise to the top of the Billboard charts
  • The acting career that could have been.
  • Her professionalism and attitude about how she treated folks who worked with her.
  • The boys who had a crush on her.
  • The sad details about her death.

I do not own the music rights to her work so I use some news clips as well as Michelle’s interview to tell this story. If you like what you hear–please subscribe and leave a review. Also–send me a note via social media (@NotFadeAway) if you want to reach out.

Thanks for checking out this podcast! If you have any suggestions for future eps–please reach out!

“The Mist” Recap: Ep 3 “Show and Tell” PLUS Top 5 Stephen King Villains 0

Book Vs. Movie Podcast

Stephen King Bonus Ep:”The Mist” Recap

Episode 3 “Show and Tell”

It’s episode three  of the Stephen King’s The Mist TV series and in this special bonus ep of the Book Vs. Movie podcast Margo D. and Deana of the Twisted Philly podcast do their weekly recap of the Spike TV production. Is the show getting better each episode?

To be honest, we have been struggling to really enjoy this series. As two die-hard King fans we have been a little disappointed in this particular effort (feeling shades of Under the Dome versus the strange awesomeness of 1991’s Golden Years miniseries.) Is it the writing? Direction? Special effects?

In this podcast we talk about what happened in the “Show and Tell” episode and offer our thoughts.

Plus, Margo D. and Deana pick their “Top 5 Stephen King Villains!”

Major points discussed here:

  • Gus attempting to maintain order not carry out a “Hurricane Katrina situation”
  • What to do with the bodies of the dead soldiers who killed themselves in the previous episode?
  • The legend of “The Black Spring” of 1860
  • Mia having withdrawals in the basement of the church
  • The continuing ickiness  of Connor the Cop
  • The moth tattoo!
  • Natalie seeing “god”
  • Was Eve some type of warrior before?
  • The slickness of Adrian.

  • The deal with Mia’s drug problem
  • “Let me see you, Babydoll!”
