It’s October and the Margos are SO excited to revisit a classic Stephen King tale–Carrie which we originally covered in 2014 (using the old, old way we recorded back in the early days.)  This is not only King’s first movie adaptation but it is also based on his first published novel. There are so many changes between book & movie that we wanted to give it a modern treatment (meaning better sound and lots of clips!)

Just how different is the original novel versus the Brian DePalma masterpiece of horror?  Whoo boy—there were some major changes made (and for very good reason in many instances.)

The Margos take on a listener-suggested episode–The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and boy did we have fun with this gem of a novel and film! (Not the 1999 remake, however)

Margo D. in the pre-show talks about the amazing Netflix adaptation and how it differs from 1963’s version.

Jackson is by far one of the most intriguing authors we have covered and though she only lived to be 48 (spoiler alert) her work has inspired the greats including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Richard Matheson and Joyce Carol Oates.

“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”

The Washing Irving Short Story Classic  Vs the Tim Burton Movie

The Margos are back and talking about spooky books & movies since, duh–it’s October! This is our favorite month of the year and we have so much fun talking about one of our best-loved stories from our childhood– The Legend of Sleepy Hollow written by the fascinating Washington Irving.  The only hard part about this episode was deciding which version of the movie we should cover (there are several!) In the end, we decided to stick with one of our favorite directors, Tim Burton and his reimaging of the tale– Sleepy Hollow.  

We begin by looking at the incredible life of the author and how a yellow fever epidemic (prevalent in his childhood) made him familiar with the ghost stories of Hudson Valley, New York. Also, how the youngest of eleven children named for the first President of the United States took his lifelong love of writing and history to become America’s first famous “man of letters.”

(If you are a fan of New York City trivia and/or the origin of Christmas traditions–you will be especially happy with this ep!)

After that, we once again go into the film archives of Tim Burton and check out his unique take on not only the character of the historically smarmy, school teacher and not-handsome-at-all Ichabod Crane (played as a hot NYC police investigator by Johnny Depp) and the plot of the story which here centers around magic and spells.

The Margos take on the wildest adaptation of the show’s history with the sublime Frankenstein compared to the frankly ridiculous Kenneth Branagh 1994 film.

The Margos get very gothic and silly sometimes trying to wrap their heads around Mary Shelley ‘s venerated classic novel with Henry V director Kenneth Branagh’s wildly acted and directed film. How crazy is this adaptation? How about a dance sequence between a zombie Helena Bonham Carter and Robert De Niro as “the monster?”

This film is completely cray-cray but the backstory of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is one of the greatest tales of 19th Century literature and we definitely dive into her fascinating life story. Plus, all of the machinations that led to the publishing of her book in 1818 and the revisions in the 1831 version.
