Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s been over a week since my “dog bite/scratch” incident and my face is healing up very nicely. To get the full story just check out last week’s post plus I will give some details in the Vlog below. Thanks so much for all of the follow up and well wishes. You are all officially THE BEST.

Last week I also caught that nasty cold that has been hanging around Brooklyn so that was the big reason I could not film my Vlog last week. I was not embarrassed about how I look but could not promise a cough-free episode and ain’t nobody got time for that! So let me get though today’s news and then we will talk about this week’s new giveaway (Weight Watchers Ultimate Dance Kit.)

  • Book Vs Movie Podcast: We are now hosted by Libsyn which means the episodes will be edited down and (mostly) error-free from now on so be sure to subscribe to us at our new link on iTunes right here https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2 and stay tuned for our next episode—Primary Colors. Margo P. and I will talk about the Joe Klein book and the Mike Nichols We are always looking for suggestions so let me know what you would like for us to cover next!
  • Fit Bottomed Girls New Year/New Rear Challenge: Y’all know that I am a card-carrying, proud member of the Fit Bottomed Girls Every January Jenn, Erin & Co. create a month’s worth of challenges to get you excited about the new year and also tackle some long-held fitness goals. Be sure to check them out every single day and get 2015 off to the right start!
  • Exercises the Experts Ditched: Speaking of Fit Bottomed Girls—I am proud to day I wrote this feature asking the top fitness experts on the exercises they no longer do and what they do to replace them which you can check out here.
  • New York Times’ “Race to the Front Row” Article: This past Thursday my spin class students kept saying to me did you read about “the front row” in the New York Times? It’s a feature that basically talks about the cache of being in the front row for certain fitness classes. I am not a big fan of the teacher-worship culture that exists in the fitness world. The way I see it—some people want fans and some people want students. I want students and I hate the idea people are made to feel like garbage for not being good enough to be seen in a classroom that they paid upwards of $35 to attend. But, that is just me. What do you think? I really want to know!
  • Envizualizing My Next Fitness Goal (The Box Jump!) Going back to Fit Bottomed Girls again—I told the lovely Jenn that my big fitness goal is to perform rad box jump. She said “go for it!” and “get me the post by early March” so I guess it is time to get to work! So this past weekend at one of the gyms where I work Pongo Power we celebrated our first anniversary with a party that include a station with artist Jonny Goldsetin who helps people map out their goals with a mixture of talk therapy and an original piece of artwork from Jonny. Here is his “Envizualize” version of my first box jump. I think it is pretty neat! (Thanks Jonny!)

Book vs. Movie Podcast Now in iTunes!

Wanderlust Yoga Festival, Kinky Boots on Broadway, EleVen by Venus

Plus: Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman Giveaway!

Enter to win this book!

Enter to win this book!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Last week I was not feeling well and could not film my regular Vlog but this week I am BACK and with a whole new giveaway. New York has been enjoying a lovely “last gasp of summer’ weather and I have been sure to get out there and enjoy it.

  • Book vs. Movie Is Now on iTunes!! I have been talking about a the podcast that Margo P. and I have created called Book vs. Movie podcast where we talk about books that have been turned into movies and discuss the differences between them. Our past episodes include Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Forrest GumpThe Help and The Firm.  All are rollicking good chats (though episodes 2 & 6 are haunted by technical issues) and now you can subscribe to us on iTunes! If you don’t mind terribly—please take a moment to subscribe as we are trying to get on to iTunes’ “New & Noteworthy” char. Namaste! Also, if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page. (Thank you!)
  • So What’s the Next Book for Book vs. Movie podcast? Glad you asked because it is none other than The Princess Bride which was written as a novel by William Goldman back in the 70s and is now the movie classic we all know and love. Podcast to drop in the next couple of weeks!
  • Wanderlust Festival Post in Fit Bottomed Girls: A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn and my feature is now up on Fit Bottomed Girls with the greatest headline I will ever come up with again: The Om Before The Storm (damn, I am clever!)
  • Kinky Boots on Broadway: I have been hearing for months that the Kinky Boots musical is a must-see but I resisted. Sure, the movie was fun but how would it work on Broadway? Well let me tell you—when you have Harvey Fierstein and music by Cindi Lauper you have a magical experience at hand. I absolutely LOVED this show and recommend you catch it when it comes to your town.
  • My newest giveaway! Author Katy Bowman has a Blog http://www.katysays.com/ which is described as “witty and science-y” (and it is!) so today I am thrilled to offer her latest book Move Your DNA which you can learn more about below on my Blog and lower down this post. Good luck!
  • EleVen By Venus: Recently I joined the ambassador teach for EleVen by Venus (Venus Williams’ new athletic line) and in the Vlog today I am wearing a divine top–the Vintage Floral Hail Mary Tank which you all need to get today. (Let me know if you want a discount code for your first purchase!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

More Information about Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman, M.S.

MOVE YOUR DNA: Biomechanist’s new book reveals why healthy people don’t just exercise,

they move, why treadmills are movement “junk-food and how natural movements benefit our health right down to our DNA.

Seattle, WA – September 15, 2014: Diseases of captivity aren’t just for orcas. What happens when you take animals out of their biological habitat and stick them into office cubicles, cars and shoes? According to author and biomechanics scientist Katy Bowman, modern humans have manifested so-called “diseases of affluence” for a rather simple reason. We are not moving our bodies in all the ways that nature intended, instead repeating only a few postures and movements with little variation. In her science-based yet easy to understand book, ”Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement”, Bowman challenges many of the most widely held beliefs about getting healthy. “Move Your DNA” is available in trade paperback October 1 from Propriometrics Press on Amazon for $24.95 (ISBN: 9780989653947); ebook is $9.99. An audiobook with mileage markers to encourage walking while listening will be out September 15. For more information visit www.moveyourdna.com.

“Groundbreaking information with specific instructions for how to live well in your body. Katy Bowman is a practical genius.” – Christiane Northrup, M.D\

Bowman’s explains our need for natural movement right down to the cellular level. Readers will come to understand why our modern lifestyle doesn’t work for our bodies and how optimal movement can help restore health and reduce pain. Exercise as we know it isn’t always the right answer. “Move Your DNA” contains the corrective exercises, habit modifications, and simple lifestyle changes we need to make in order to free ourselves from disease and discover our naturally healthy, reflex driven selves.

In the book Bowman explores:

Whether Kegels do more harm than good

If standing is just as bad as sitting

The naked truth about barefoot running

Why fit people need the same joint replacements and back surgeries as couch potatoes

The myth that we need cardio exercise

What we can learn from orcas and their floppy dorsal fins (a la documentary “Blackfish”)

Bowman argues that movement is like nutrition, with varied and essential requirements. Every type of natural movement provides essential information right down to the cells, and even influences genetic

expression.

{Just a note—Katy Bowman is not sponsoring this post and her publisher will ship directly to the winner. This giveaway is only available to folks in the Continental United States.}

If you want to win three rolls of Move Your DNA featured in the Vlog above you must do the following (Continental United States only, please!)

Now here is some more information about Martial Fusion: Cardio Blast DVD:

Burn Major Calories, Strengthen Body and Mind With

New “Martial Fusion™ Kickboxing” DVDs

Miami, FL –Fourth degree Aikido black belt Sensei Guillermo Gomez packs about an hour of “Cardio, cardio, cardio, strength and flexibility,” into his new “Martial Fusion Cardio Blast Workout” DVD. Why waste an hour on a treadmill when kickboxing burns more calories, tones the abs from all angles and keeps the mind engaged? Geared to leave the user both relaxed and energized. This fast paced, easy to follow kickboxing routine blasts calories while toning and slimming the whole body. It sells for $14.95 on http://martialfusionfitness.com/ Gomez’s best selling DVD, “Martial Fusion Kickboxing CardioBurn”, is also $14.95 on the site.

“Martial Fusion Cardio Blast Workout” thoroughly covers kickboxing’s foundation moves (the basic punches and kicks) and puts various combinations together so the intensity varies throughout the fast-paced hour. The workout is filmed completely in English and has a little extra Spanish flavor to add spice. Participants are one on one with Gomez in a boxing ring setting. No equipment is needed.

According to Gomez, “Martial arts enable us to reach for higher grounds. One of the main principles of Aikido is to  learn how to flow. My workouts are intended to let users feel what it is to have that sense of flow and connection with what is right for you. Not only does it get you through the workout, it can change your approach to everything. While we’re moving our bodies with kickboxing, we’re also engaging our mind and our spirit. We become more open to finding new ideas and energies that might be more natural for us.”

“Martial Fusion CardioBurn” is the best selling DVD in the Martial Fusion series. This non-stop full hour workout offers more of a fitness studio setting with two women working out along with Gomez. Like “Cardio Blast” it will burn hundreds of calories, build endurance, muscular strength, mental focus and will challenge all the muscles of the core. It also uses no equipment or props.

Sensei Guillermo Gomez is a fourth degree black belt in Aikido certified by Hombu Dojo of Tokyo and the International Aikido Federation. He has over 25 years of experience training in, and teaching, martial arts, all over the world, including the Shaolin Temple.   He has certified over 1000 fitness experts in Martial Fusion Cardio Kickboxing in more then ten countries. Now here is some more information about Learning to Breathe Fire:

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness

BY J. C. HERZ

A fascinating account of CrossFit’s origins, explosive grassroots growth, and emergence as a global phenomenon

When it comes to CrossFit, observers of the red-hot workout regimen tend to fall into two camps: true believers and those who can’t imagine what would possess someone to push that hard. Or, as journalist J. C. Herz puts it, for some people it’s a “lightning bolt: this is what I’ve been searching for. The rest think it’s a sign of mental illness.”

But there’s no denying that CrossFit has recently exploded in popularity, and become one of the world’s most fascinating sports subcultures. Today there are over 7,000 CrossFit gyms (or “boxes”) in dozens of countries, and millions of devoted participants—including elite special forces and first responders, along with plenty of regular Joes and Janes. In her new book, LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness (Crown Archetype; $25.00; On Sale June 3, 2014), Herz delves deep into this “insane fitness cult,” vividly bringing it to life. In rich and riveting detail, she explores the science behind why CrossFit works, as well as the people who champion it and the fierce spirit that fuels them.

Herz traces CrossFit’s rise from a single underground gym in Santa Cruz to a global movement, going behind the scenes with the founders, star competitors, and everyday enthusiasts whose lives have been transformed by the training. Fusing action-packed sportswriting with riveting psychological profiles, she introduces readers to unforgettable characters such as CrossFit founder Greg Glassman, never-say-die Masters competitor Jerry Hill, and two-time Games champion Annie Thorisdottir—recently dubbed “the fittest woman on the planet” by Vogue. The characters in LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE run the gamut from surfer chicks to Navy SEALS. But they share an underlying ethos: they are willing to seek and endure discomfort, and their intense physical trials forge powerful group bonds. In the CrossFit parlance, “It never gets easier. You just get stronger.”

Modern-day stoicism, the ability to endure unpredictable adversity, is the key to CrossFit’s transformative power. Herz explains that traditional gym equipment, like the Stairmaster and the elliptical, is designed for minimally taxing, low-intensity, and passive exercise. By contrast, CrossFit workouts—called WODs (Workouts of the Day)—are known for their variety and intensity. They combine many different fitness elements, including gymnastics, sprints, and weightlifting, in an ever-changing fashion, forcing the body to adapt. Think of a WOD as a timed obstacle course meant to mimic what any of us might be called on to do in an emergency situation. The results are concrete and measurable, as CrossFitters find themselves doing things they never dreamed of being able to do, whether it’s a single pull-up or a 15-foot rope climb.

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE also takes readers inside the excitement and drama of the annual CrossFit Games, which began as an informal throwdown on a California ranch and has evolved into a televised global event—a veritable Olympics of fitness. Designed to be a true test of human physical capacity, the Games are filled with competition, camaraderie, and superhuman feats of strength and endurance. Herz taps in to that fervor, chronicling the grueling challenges and spotlighting elite athletes as they battle it out in the arena.

As the Games demonstrate, CrossFit draws heavily on ancient forms of athletic ritual. It taps into the primal human experience and the power of the pack. We are geared to form tribes and spring into action as “first responders.” The experience of pushing our physical limits connects us to ancient hunters and warriors. In LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE, Herz brilliantly connects the old and the new.

Got that?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 88: She’s Nacho Mama Podcast, Fit Bottomed Girls Spin Tips, Manhattanhenge & Momentum Giveaway! 19

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #88

She’s Nacho Mama Podcast, Tips for Indoor Cycling Classes, “Manhattanhenge”

Plus: Motivate Wrap and Foot Notes Shoe Charm from Momentum Giveaway

 Momentum Motivate Wrap

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It has been quite a hot week in New York and I have been busier than usual in both my work life and “real” life but as always I am happy to do my weekly check-in with all of you. So instead of babbling on and on—let’s dive right in to this week’s news bits (which includes a giveaway & discount code from Momentum workout jewelry) and then head into this week’s Vlog (my 88th!)

  • She’s Nacho Mama’s Podcast: Power to the Margos! The lovely Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast had me once again as a guest on her show to talk all about Fitbloggin in Savannah and it was a hoot! First of all we were both obsessed with The Pink House and Jim Williams who was the main subject featured in the non-fiction book Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil (Kevin Spacey played him in the utterly forgettable Clint Eastwood film.) The two Margos talk about our daily exploits during the convention, our favorite meals, the hot weather, my messy hair, her ice cream-stained outfit and more in this rollicking hour. Thank you so much Margo for having me on your show!
  • Manhattanhenge: What is Manhattanhenge? Well basically there are only two nights each year where the sun sets along New York City and the sun aligns perfectly between the buildings. My awesome big brother Joe suggested we go together and we started at the Tudor City Bridge overpass on 42nd street which quickly became too crowded so he suggested we watch from the street. At first I played the role of his mother and scolded him for walking into traffic to get a better look. But soon enough we were both standing in the middle of the street getting our shot in. See!

Look, up in the sky! It's a sunset!

Look, up in the sky! It’s a sunset!

I have a video of the moment as well where you can hear me squealing with delight. It was just so cool!!!

  • Motivate Giveaway: Motivate was created by Amy Cochrane who wanted to offer workout lovers wearable jewelry to the gym (or on the road) to both inspire and look cool. Motivate has dozens of options for both colors and slogans you want to wear on your wrist (the Motivate Wrap) or shoe laces (Foot Notes shoe charm) and all of the work is top notch. Even better than looking great—they are SO comfortable to wear. You will not have something that feels scratchy or binding on your wrist and it will give just that hint of extra awesome when you need a little extra motivation.
  • I am hosting a giveaway on my Blog this week but if you are looking to order one on your own be sure to visit their website http://www.designsthatmoveyou.com/ and use the code GGS 158 to get an extra 15% off up until September 15, 2014. Score!

Got that? Now here are more details about The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet:

Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead, co-founders of FitBottomedGirls.com, know that a healthy lifestyle isn’t about deprivation diets or torturous workouts. Instead, their confidence-boosting program offers an easy way to look and feel better—without overhauling your routine or your life. Their new book, The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet: 10-Minute Fixes to Get the Body You Want and a Life You’ll Love (Harmony Books; On Sale May 6th, 2014; Trade Paperback Original), gives readers the tools they need to take control of their bodies and put the fun back into being fit.

Named one of the top Twitter feeds of 2013 by TIME magazine, the Fit Bottomed Girls have created a friendly and fun approach to managing weight that is designed to help users boost their energy levels, have fun getting healthy, and most importantly love how they feel in their own skin. Using a range of 10-minute changes—from discovering the right way to eat a piece of chocolate to developing a workout to a favorite song—readers can create better, healthier routines without drastically altering their daily lives. Changes are based on the 10 principles of being a Fit Bottomed Girl, which include listening to your hunger, achieving balance, and getting out of your comfort zone. For women looking to lose 10+ pounds, fit folk who need a healthier relationship with their bodies, or anyone in search of a fun weight-loss program, The Fit Bottomed Girls Anti-Diet is a straight-forward, sustainable way to get healthier in two weeks or less.

Jennipher Walters is an ACE-certified personal trainer, lifestyle and weight management coach, and advanced health and fitness specialist, and an AFAA-certified group exercise instructor.
