Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am so sorry for my lack of posting lately—this past month I have been very busy with new clients (thankfully,) tons of fitness events to cover for Fit Bottomed Girls (my homies,) a hamstring strain that has baffled me, a delivery service to try out (which was amazing,) playlists to put together (they do not create themselves) and miles to go before I sleep. (A literary reference but also the truth—I am having major sleep issues lately–grrr!)

Well I am back and ready to talk about my latest news and notes for you beautiful people. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and for the Halloween spooky season we decided to cover a couple of classics for horror fans. William March’s The Bad Seed and Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs which we are really proud of.

It’s funny how you do something just for the love of it and to release some creative energy out to the world and then you get pretty good at it! We produce, edit and promote every episode out of joy for books and movies and now we are getting thousands of downloads a month. Whoa!

(Does this sound like I am bragging?  I hope not! I’m just excited about our journey.)

If any of you out there want to learn more about podcasting and how it can help expand your brand—let me know!

What are your favorite books to movies adaptations? I want to hear about them in the comments below!

Fitness Events a Plenty: I am the NYC reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls.com and because of that I get to attend many cool events and this past month has been some of my best yet. Such as…

TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch Event: Are you familiar with TomTom products? They have GPS systems on the market and are mainly based in Holland and Boston which I think is really cool for some crazy reason.

Well, they are now entering the world of fitness by creating GPS watches that will hold up to 500 MP3s, can sync with your playlists, count your steps and calories, offer coaching which you can use with Bluetooth headphones, help you train for marathons, cycling, swimming, the treadmill and more. Plus, it is waterproof!

You can read an early review of the TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch from Backcountry.com and here is a look at it as it appears on my arm right now.  It sits right next to my Fitbit jewelry from my new client Bezels & Bytes and I plan to use both in my training for the new few months and will report on it soon.

TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch & Bezels & Bytes Basketweave Bracelet

TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch & Bezels & Bytes Basketweave Bracelet

The event included a super fun workout that I could participate in as my hamstring was bothering me so I took a picture of the room with my fellow fitness peeps and it turns out my Blogger buddy Nicole of Fitfulfocus.com was sitting on the floor in green tights right in front of me and I totally missed her! You can see her for yourself here (Nicole–I will make it up to you!)

Tom Tom Watch Event

Rykä Kinetic: The makers of the women-only fitness gear brand trotted out some of their upcoming spring and summer collections and gifted me with the Kinetic trainer which I plan to break in this week. The pink box attracted my kitty (Sweet Sarah) and I have to let all you fitness pros know that you can earn tons of discounts with them by joining Ryka fit so get right on it! (Photo of Kinetic and Sweet Sarah)

Ryka Shoes

Under Armour: I love this brand for their tech gear and beautiful style and their upcoming collections do not disappoint. I will post a Spring trends feature soon enough but in the meantime I got this lovely chunky knit collection as part of my goodie bag. (Thanks Under Armour!)

Under Armour Event Goodies

Brooks Running: I had three events in one night to go to and I was cranky, hungry and tired when I checked out the upcoming 2016/2017 collections for Brooks Running (THE running shoe brand I hear about most from my marathon loving peeps.) Loved everything I saw and begged for samples which hopefully I will get to try out soon for a gear roundup.

They had an artist at the event as well creating an artwork designed to honor NYC runners. They asked me what is my favorite part of the NYC marathon I told them it was cheering on all of the participants so they included it into the piece—see!

Brooks Running Art

Hello Fresh As part of my upcoming piece on how to keep your New Year’s resolutions by using a food delivery service plan and I was keyed into Hello Fresh as they are the largest home food-delivery service globally, which offers subscribers a variety of delicious and healthy meals made of farm-fresh, seasonal and locally-sourced ingredients – all pre-measured and conveniently delivered to their doorsteps. They work with the country’s best purveyors to deliver premium quality ingredients in every box.

I loved my first meals with them including butter-braised chicken with thyme roasted carrots. Will let you know when that feature runs in January!

Hello Fresh

Hamstring Trouble: After years of cycling way too many miles and looking for every reason in the world to NOT take regular yoga classes I finally have a repetitive motion injury—a strained hamstring. People, I am in pain! For the last few weeks I have been icing and stretching it as best that I can but one day (in a pouty mood) I mention on Twitter my injury and the reps from BelleCore Body Buffer got in touch with me to try out their product to see if it could help me.

The Baby Belle Fit is an easy-to-handle massager that enhances stretching, soothes sore joints, warms up the muscles and help speed muscle recovery. I was a little dubious if it would work (you only need to use it for five minutes tops per muscle group) but guess what—it did help! I have been using it twice a day for the last week (morning and night) on my hamstrings and my IT band and am very happy with the results so far. I will discuss more in a future column talking about how to recover from injuries but for those of you creating a “wish list” for the holidays—this could be a dream gift for many of you!

Belle Fit

Lastly today—I wanted to pass along my newest playlist for Fit Bottomed Girls—the Madonna vs. Lady Gaga showdown. If you are a fan of either of them, let me know what you think. Also—send me song ideas because  I need to jazz up my playlists. Thank you in advance!

Oh well, that’ all for me this week. I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Later gators!

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

May 2015

Cobie Smulders photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Cobie Smulders photographed by Eric Ray Davidson

Women’s Health Cover Star for May 2015:

Confession time—the one and only episode of How I Met Your Mother I ever viewed was the last one. Let’s just say I was terribly confused over the different characters and their motivations but thought the woman who played “Robin” was not only funny and but also a great actress.

Cobie Smulders is featured in the new The Avengers: Age of Ultron movie which I am pretty sure will make a few bucks over the next few weeks. Cobie posed for the cover of this issue less than two months after giving birth to her daughter (holy smokes!) and reveals in the magazine she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer when she was just 25-years old (wow!)

Cobie is very heathy these days and appreciates her new life in New York City with husband Taran Killam of Saturday Night Live (!!) and her two daughters. She keeps in shape with Soul Cycle and Pilates and tries to enjoy a good serving of mac and cheese when she can.

So what else is in this issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Step up to Sexy”

I know you might find this hard to believe but I know LOTS of people who still love cardio Step workouts after all of these years. Me—I think they are terrible for your knees and hips but the equipment can be very useful for other types of training and this workout from Amber Edwards of Equinox is pretty solid.

Step workout Womens Health Mag 001

Women’s Health Fitness Awards”

Women’s Health picked the best of the best in fitness gear including treadmills, trackers, tanks, ear buds. Water bottles, running shoes and sport bras—which is the one piece of equipment that most women neglect and drives me crazy! (You are tearing muscle fibers when you let them loose!)

sports bras Womens Health mag 001

“Hang Tight”

You want to gain strength quickly—try a suspension workout. This one featured here is from Todd Durkin of Fitness Quest 10 gym in San Diego

TRX workout Women Health Mag 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “Having a Moment: Bone Broth” Most of my Paleo friends are insane for bone broth and show pictures constantly of their latest concoctions. Anyhoo—Women’s Health explains the benefits to bone brother in all of its glory here.
  • “Forces of Nature” I cannot believe it is May already and I have NOT made vacation plans yet. Well in this section you get 50 suggestions for healthy-type vacays you can enjoy either on your own or with a crowd.

Overall Grade:

A  I really like meeting Cobie Smulders, the workouts are top notch and the information is solid. Get the May issue!

BlogHer 15 NYC Dates Announced

Fit Bottomed Girls “Tips for Your First Kettlebell Class,” My Terry Bikes Spring Picks,

P!nk Handles Mean Tweeters, Tapgenes.com Talks Eating Disorders

Plus: Book Vs Movie” Podcast The Outsiders!

 brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? It’s a brand new week and though I feel a wee bit short of my personal fitness goals (I may have slacked on my foam rolling a bit…) but this warmer & sunny weather has put an extra spring in my step. Doesn’t seeing the sun out nice and bright in the sky improve your outlook? It sure does mine and with that I am resolving to get back to foam rolling and stretching every night not only it makes me feel better but it also helps me perform better as a teacher.

So now that I am saying it OUT LOUD—it will have to get done! If it kills me I am going to increase my flexibility and strength. You are all my witnesses! Now that THAT is out of the way—let’s go through my weekly news & notes. (And for those 3 of you miss my Vlog—next week I promise to deliver with a cool, new giveaway. Pinky swear!)

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

Tips from the Pros on “Kettlebells for Beginners”

If there is one strength-building piece of equipment that really helps to build muscle while also providing an excellent cardio workout it’s the kettlebell. For Fit Bottomed Girls I wrote “Tips for Your First Kettlebell Class” so I would know how to use mine better when working out on my own.

Do you use kettlebells? What is your favorite advice for newbies?

Terry Bikes Spring Gear:

Some of you may know that I am a BIG FAN of Terry Bikes and somehow got the gumption last year to approach them as their first brand ambassador. Luckily they said yes so I get to try out their latest gear and let you know what you need to add to your next bike ride. In this post for them I picked my favorite spring items from their catalog. Enjoy!

BlogHer 15 Conference Set for NYC:

Have you heard the news? BlogHer will be back in NYC July 16-18 for their “Experts Among Us” BlogHer 15 Conference. I know I will be there but if you want more details check out this link to see who will be speaking there. (They always manage to get GREAT special guests at BlogHer events!)

BlogHer & SheKnows are also teaming up for a road show (I was invited to the Brooklyn event last week and had a blast!) If you live anywhere near the following markets—you should absolutely go (it’s free!)
April 24: Atlanta, Georgia – 5:00 p.m.
May 3: Chicago, Illinois – 5:00 p.m.
May 8: San Francisco, California – 6:00 p.m.
May 9: Boston, Massachusetts – 4:00 p.m.

To RSVP for one of these great parties, email Marketing@SheKnows.com

Body Shaming of P!nk:

I don’t know if you heard of this story but one of my favorite singers, P!nk, attended an event this past weekend looking totally beautiful. Well because we live in an internet age there has to be a body-shaming wave headed by mean-spirited trolls tried to make her life miserable. Well if you know anything about P!nk you know that she is non-nonsense and expertly handled all of the mean tweets thrown her way. Do you think we will EVER live in a world without trolls?

How I Learned to Love Eating:

I really loved this article from Tapgenes.com talking about recovery from eating disorders. Tapgenes.com interviewed two amazing women who talk about the toll it took on their bodies and how they have successfully deal with their individual disorders. This is a definite must-read!

Book Vs Movie Podcast:

Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and I talked about The Outsiders in our newest episode of our podcast “Book Vs. Movie” and had a fabulous time doing it. You can check us out in the player below and in case you are wondering what will be the subject of our next episode—get ready for us to dissect The Stepford Wives! Woot Woot!

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Thanks as always for dropping by!

Fit Bottomed Girls “Exercises I Ditched & What I Do Instead,” Terry Bikes “Urban Hoodie” Review, Looking for “BFF” Song Suggestions

My Top 5 Favorite Podcasts & “Book vs Movie” Podcast The Outsiders!

 Urban Hoodie

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? I am writing this down on Easter Sunday and I am feeling all kinds of wonderful & anxious at the same time (which is pretty natural for me.) The fact that spring has FINALLY, you know, sprung is making me smile but I am also worried about some friends and family which I am trying to funnel in a healthy way by alternately upping the intensity of my workouts and also trying really hard with incorporating meditation into a daily practice. Do any of you meditate? Any advice for an anxious newbie like me who has a hard getting her thoughts to NOT swirl when under pressure. Thanks in advance! Now let’s get to the latest news & notes, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

Tips from the Trainer Pros on “Exercises I No Longer Do & What I Do Instead”  Tuesday mornings I teach a boot camp class which is designed more like an old-school calisthenics class rather than a whistle-blowing jerk yelling at people to do more push-ups kind of thing. One move in my arsenal was having my students bear crawl in one direction across the basketball court and then bear crawl back.

One day I was asked “what does the crab walk really DO anyway? It always makes me wrists & shoulders hurt.” I realized unlike a bear crawl which engages multiple muscle groups and mimics activities like leaving a cab or going up the steps at the subway—the crab walk while challenging to the core really has potential to cause more harm than good. It made me think what other moves other trainers I respect have “ditched” over the years which turned into an article I wrote for Fit Bottomed Girls.

So what exercises have YOU ditched over the years?

Terry Bikes Spring Gear: Last year I cold-called the women who run Terry Bikes and asked them if they ever needed a brand ambassador—well no further than with moi! I love their gear and am so happy to be able to share with you some of my most favorite items from their collection. Well today I want to talk about their Urban Hoodie which I have been wearing everywhere this past week as I was finally able to ditch my parka (off to the cleaners you filthy, annoying thing!). The hoodie fits snuggly in a fabric that whisks away moisture and keeps you warm. If you need something more than a jacket but less than, well—a parka the Terry Urban Hoodie is a delight. I took a picture of myself in it that you can see up top!  (Love!)

BFF Songs—I Need Your Suggestions! For Fit Bottomed Girls I am putting together a list of songs that help people remind them of their best friends. Just between up—I am coming up dry with ideas! So if you have any suggestions for BFF Workout tunes please feel free to list below. Thank you in advance!

My Fave Podcasts: For me, the best way to unwind around the house is to listen to podcasts. It’s like hearing stories from super-witty people in my living room & kitchen while I dust, clean and feed the cats. So today I wanted to offer some of my personal faves (no mention of Serial because it is in hiatus right now but if you have not heard of it—download them right now!)

  • What You Can When You Can #wycwyc Fabulous fit bloggers Carla Birnberg and Roni Noone break down healthy living in such a fun, real way. You will feel like you are learning how to live your best “fit life” from two cool friends. What You Can When You Can means you can fit health & fitness into your life in easy, small nuggets. Love it!
  • I Was There Too: Host Matt Gourley talks to extras and characters who have been in big movies scenes to get their unique take on cultural touchstones such as the “baby stroller scene” in The Untouchables to the passengers on the bus in Speed. This show is filled with so much great information and Gourley in particular is such a warm, friendly interviewer that I want to hang out with him and talk movies all day (Matt—I have a crazy cat and my name is Margo!)
  • How Did this Get Made? Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael take on one movie each episode that is so bad it is too much fun NOT to make fun of. (Is that a sentence? Not sure—I am tried and keeping it in!) Anyhoo this last one was about Lake Placid which is an AWFUL film but I loved listening to the panel rip it apart in an entertaining fashion. If you are afraid of snark—go for this one. (Though you will be surprised which movies they secretly adore
  • Radiolab If you are a fan of both science and excellent story telling you need to check out Radiolab. Honestly I am such a big fan of this podcast that if I ever met either host Jad Abumrad or Robert Krulwich I would probably pass out! Check them out!

What are your favorite podcasts? Let me know!!

And speaking of podcasts–

Book Vs Movie Podcast: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and I are talking about The Outsiders on our next episode—weeeeeeeeee!!  (You subscribe to us on iTunes with this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2.)  We also have a spiffy new website– http://www.bookversusmovie.com/ so come check us out sometime.  (Next episode full of Rob Lowe swooning will be available next weekend!)

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Thanks as always for dropping by!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Review: The Tria Hair Removal System @TriaBeauty 28

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Review

The Tria Hair Removal System

Tria Hair Removal System

Tria Hair Removal System

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

A few months I was asked to take part in a Blogger review program for Tria Hair Removal Laser Precision which normally I do not participate in unless I find the product useful, intriguing and of real value to my readers. (Trust me—I turn things down all of the time!) But after meeting the Tria reps at the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet last year and honing in on the sweet design of their hair remover I eagerly jumped in.

In my first post I talked about my past hair removal disasters which included bleaching creams that turned my upper lip yellow, wax that burned my face and a TV product that left me bruised all over. Hair is a big deal to me. I fuss and fight with those on the top of my head and struggle with the rest of my body getting rid of them.

A few things about the Tria system that made me want to try them out:

  • The Tria Hair Removal Precision is the first FDA-cleared, at home laser hair removal device that uses the exact same diode laser technology used in professional dermatologists’’ offices for permanent results.
  • Clinical studies have shown up to 70% hair reduction after two treatments.
  • The product’s lightweight, ergonomic shape is designed to treat the smaller more sensitive areas like the underarms, bikini line, upper lip, and other curvy areas of the body (like the ankles!)

Today I am offering my own review of the Tria Laser Precision in my latest Vlog below. I was not paid for this post and Tria did provide me the product to try out. Check it out!

So my big tips for using the Tria effectively:

  • Start at the lower level of intensity to build up to the feeling. Some people think it is akin to a rubber band snap but I found it more like a blast of heat from a hair dryer-ish.
  • You can shave in between treatments but do not pluck or wax (I screwed this up the first time I tried it!)
  • Plan to spend a few minutes on each spot you are treating and don’t rush through it. I would usually just watch the clock on my TV to keep me in line.

Follow Tria on social media at Facebook, Twitter and You Tube.

That’s it for this time. I will back soon with my magazine reviews and playlist to keep you motivated!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Review: The @TriaBeauty Hair Removal System 2

Brooklyn Fit Chick Review: Tria Hair Removal System

My History with Bad Beauty Technology and My Newfound Love for Lasers!

 33838_31903_Tria_HRLp_Precsn_Lft_Side_Pink_R3_CMYK

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s been a while since I did a gear review so it was a wonderful surprise when the makes of the Tria Hair Removal Laser Precision followed with me after our meeting the Fitness magazine NYC conference. I dropped by their booth to talk about laser hair removal as I have had a few beauty-related mishaps in my life and wondered what made their product more effective and safe than other methods I have used to remove unwanted hair. Here is a brief history of hair removing and my weird/back luck coming into play:

  • Bleaching: I used to bleach my upper lip to this buttery shade which I thought was safer and cheaper than waxing and just as effective. This is without realizing that on my super fair skin a blonde hairy lip would look a bit odd in certain types of light. One day my friend’s adorable 5 year-old boy and I were hanging out at a backyard picnic when he leaned really close to me and said to everyone nearby “Guys—Margo has a mustache and it’s yellow!” Needless to say I dropped bleaching and turned to waxing my upper lip.
  • Waxing: Humiliated by the worthless bleaching I finally got up the nerve to try waxing and was very happy with the results. It became my regular bi-weekly appointment for a couple of years when one day during a treatment the beautician inhaled deeply, put her hand against her mouth and said “Oh my god—so sorry!” as she backed away from me. I had no idea what she was talking about until the next day when I saw that above my lip and under my nose were two horrific burns that made me look like I had a red, scaly mustache.

The real problem? I worked in retail at the time and it was during the holiday season. Let’s just say it I harder to sell high end boots and pumps with a scab-filled face. (Bye bye waxing!)

  • Gels: Back in the 90s there was a popular infomercial touting the benefits of “Nads”—an Australian product which worked as a wax but did not burn your skin. One of the models in the commercial made a point of losing her dreaded “hairy arms” with the use of Nads and that is stayed smooth for weeks afterwards. Voila! I was going to buy me some Nads and get rid of unwanted hair in my home while saving money on beauty salon visits. Win/win, right? Diligently I poured the goopy mess over my arms and proceeded to pull off each strip one at a time with a feeling akin to those “rub burns” mean kids would give each other at school. I mean OW, people.

While my arms looked smooth and hair-free they were also yellow and blue from bruising. I had ugly bruises going up and down each arm causing me to wear long sleeves in the middle of summer for several days which is quite uncomfortable. Lesson learned—no more Nads for me.

  • Threading: A few years I gave threading a try for my upper lip and brow area which is mostly successful except it almost always leaves me with pimples and red dots exactly where the grumpy thread-tition worked on me.

So you can see I was excited to learn about a hair removal system that is easy-to-use and will not cause bruises, burns or zits!

The Tria is amazingly easy to apply and I have been using it on my upper lip, under arms and right around my ankles where I get annoying dark hairs (shaving them has caused more than one awful cut in my lifetime.) The hair in those areas is definitely fading away and I am thrilled with the results so far. It retails for $299 which I know is a big investment but if you regularly pay for waxing or threading you may want to invest in a laser technology that is much more effective in the long run and won’t harm you.

Here is their official video so you can see how they work. You will want to buy one!

Hit me up with any questions you have about his product. I was not paid for this review and Tria did not manage the messaging of my post. (They did send me product for free but did not write or edit this post.)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

To know me is to be understanding when I endure one of my many computer issues and talk me off the ledge when I feel hopeless. (Oh technology—how hard it stings when you breakdown!) Currently I am working off of three laptops in various stages of usability but fear not—I am still here for you! So let’s get to this week’s Vlog post which features my Coppertone skin care review and more.

  • Shelton Koskie—Web Site Rock Star: One of the many technical failures of the past week that I have been dealing with was my Word Press site not working (And Go Daddy was less than helpful—thanks for taking my money every month you guys!) However I am fortunate to be acquainted with rock star Word Press God Shelton Koskie of Eighty Grit who helped me get my site back up and running. If you ever need website help—be sure to get in touch with Shelton (and tell him Margo gives him major props for problem solving!)
  • Joy Bauer Nourish Snacks: I have a new post to be featured soon on Fit Bottomed Girls talking about Today Show nutrition expert Joy Bauer and her new venture Nourish Snacks. In a nutshell—it is a home delivery service of yummy (and healthy!) snacks that cost just $12.50 per week (including shipping) and is being curated by Joy herself throughout the summer. Here is a look at what these shipments look like (I will let you know when it posts on FBG—we will have a giveaway!)

  • Terry Bikes Giveaway at Fitbloggin! Terry Bicycles(the totally fabulous brand that I am lucky enough to be associated with ) has given me on of their top selling T 1 Saddles that will make any bike ride more comfortable to one lucky participant at the talk at the Fitbloggin convention. I will be leading small group discussion How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships and Sponsorships”on Saturday, June 28th from 9:30-10:30 am and I want to see you there!

  • Coppertone Review (Not Sponsored): The folks at Coppertone asked me to try out their latest summer products and I have my review in the clip below. They did not pay for this review and my opinions are my own.

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:

That’s all I have for this week. Hopefully with my laptop, website and scanner issues resolved I will be back to giving you the best that I got. Rock on gang!

#bondiband #sweatpink

Hey Gang! Are you looking for a headband that will actually stay in place AND take care of that annoying sweat that runs down your forehead? Well the good folks at Bondi Band send me my own pink “crown” to try out as I teach my spin classes and let me just say this—they work!

Bondi Band Margo

Each band is comfortable to wear and will NOT slip while providing great coverage for the top of your head. Bondi Bands are also unisex which means anyone can wear them weather you playing some Frisbee in the sun or taking on a triathlon.

Bondi Band has several styles and logos you can choose from plus you can send them your own personal logo if you want something a little more personal. Yeah! From today until June 28th you can order from Bondi Band and receive a 10% discount by using the discount code SWEATPINK.

But if you want to win one from little old me—here is your chance. I have two from you to choose from (see below.) So whether you want a pop of color (“Suck it Up Cupcake”) or if you prefer the black & white band (“Play Hard or Go Home”) you need to do the following to win one of them.

Bondi 2

Tweet out your interest with the following: “I want to win @bondiband from @fitapproach @brooklynfitchik #sweatpink #bondiband” I will pick one winner this Saturday, June 7th and contact them directly. Bondi Band is sponsoring this post.

That’s it and good luck everyone. Keep sweating!
