Health Cover Star for May:

Christina Hendricks

OMG—I love Mad Men and Joan Harris is one of my favorite characters on the show. She looks beautiful inside the magazine but the actress doesn’t really say all that much about being healthy. Well, except that Christina replaces Greek yogurt for some high-fat dairy items and prefers yoga pants to sweats.

(Inside the magazine she wears a smashing white suit from Armani that should have been the cover IMHO.)

Moving on…

So what else is inside the May Health?

“Swim in Style”

Health offers some really cute ideas for swim suits that make me think summer might actually arrive sooner than later. (Yippee!)

 Cute suits 001

“Tracy Tones You”

Tracy Anderson gives her favorite “thigh and butt-blaster” moves that I am sure will tire the hell out of me but make my legs look great. (I do love her mat work.)

Tracy Anderson 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Urinary Tract”

Women have more urinary issues than men and therefore need to be extra careful about potential issues such as UTIs, incontinence and interstitial cystitis.

Urinary Tract 001

“Get on a Roll”

As a fit chick who loves her bike this feature made me all kinds of happy with the latest gear for cyclists and exercise tips from trainer Michelle Lovitt that specifically address biker issues. (My friends at Terry Bikes made the cut!)

Gear Up 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “We Lost the High-Tech Way” The latest weight-loss apps are tested out by real women (and not editors) including those Spark People, Weight Watchers online and My Fitness Pal.com to see how well they work under real-life conditions.
  • “New Sensitive Skin Solutions” As someone who has bouts of rosacea—these articles are always of interest to me.
  • “The Secret to a Serious Calorie Burn” I am not much of a runner but for my students who are I am going to recommend they read this article about how increasing their pace can improve their overall fitness level (including metabolism!)

Overall Grade:

B This was overall a good issue but a little light on features that grabbed my interest and made me go “ooh!” Maybe next month?

Health Cover Star for April:

Brooke Burke-Charvet

The former co-host of Dancing With the Stars is a “Booty Burn” fitness instructor and the creator of the Caelum activewear line.Brooke teaches every Sunday and works out on her own 3-5 times per week to stay healthy and sane. In 2012 she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer but is thankfully cancer-free for over a year now.

You can see some of Brooke’s “Booty Burn” moves here:

So what else is inside the April Health?

“Meet You Support Group”

Health picked out some of the cutest bra tops I have seen in a long time that actually seem to offer support—yay!

  Bras 001

“Tracy Tones You”

The high-end trainer shows how gets such a sleek middle section plus she offers a recipe for Parmesan crisps (she is a fan of dairy!)

Tracy Anderson 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Ears”

You ears are very important to your health (mine were out of whack earlier this year and gave me vertigo so I know what I am talking about here.)  Learn what you need to know about your hearing, ear wax (really,) swimmer’s ear and tinnitus.

Your Ears 001

“Which Beauty Gizmos Really Work?”

This whole page gives me the “I wants!” To paraphrase Cher—if I could turn back time I would have taken better care of my skin.

Which Gizmos Work 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • Meditation: It seems I keep reading about the power of meditation everywhere I go. This article from Jancee Dunn has me convinced to really give it a try.

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

March 2014

Alison Sweeney photographed by Brian Bowen Smith

Alison Sweeney photographed by Brian Bowen Smith

Health Cover Star for March:

Alison Sweeney

Alison must have an exhausting schedule because the married mom of two young kids somehow manages an acting career (Days of Our Lives,) hosting the popular (and controversial) The Biggest Loser for NBC, plus she is now publishing her second novel—Sacred Scriptless which comes out this summer.

In this interview Alison talks about her advice for making time for fitness (“…it’s so much cheaper to take care of your body now than to pay the health bills later”) and shows off a few of her favorite workout moves.

Alison Sweeney in Health magazine 001

So what else is inside the March Health?

“Tracy Tones You”

I completely disagree with Tracy Anderson’s directive that women use hand weights no heavier than 3 pounds as she is not “a fan of the potential long-term damage heavier weights can do to your body.” (Seriously?)  I DO, however, love her high rep moves that work smaller muscles. So that take that for what you will and by that I mean grab a 5-pounder and go kick some ass!

Tracy Anderson in Health magazine 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Blood”

LOVE this article that talks about all kinds of issues that can arise from the health of your blood from anemia to bruising to energy level—very important.

Your Blood 001

“Staying Injury-Free”

The best exercises you should do in order to keep your muscles and joints in good order from trainer Michele Olson PhD.

Injury Free in Health magazine 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Bullseye! Younger-Looking Skin” This horrible winter weather is wreaking havoc on my skin so I looked over this feature with a keen eye.
  • “Old-Time Cures Are New Again” How Bengay, prunes and ginger can heal what ails you.
  • “Is It Too Late for a Baby?” Nice to read a fertility article that ISN’T meant to scare the hell out of women!

Julia Mancuso photographed by Matt Jones

Julia Mancuso photographed by Matt Jones

Health Cover Star for January/February:

Julia Mancuso

Who dis? Julia is a gold medal winning Alpine skier who is getting ready to compete in the winter Olympics. Julia keeps herself in fighting shape wit “a lot of yoga and Pilates, the Nike Training Club app and her “lucky underwear.’ The last one is her own joke—she is not a superstitious person by nature.

Good luck Julia!

 Julia Mancuso 001

So what else is inside the December Health?

“6 Top Fitness Myths—Busted”

Health helps us “exercise smarter” by talking about all types of myths and legends in the workout world including the efficacy of crunches and whether or not weights will bulk you up (they won’t, by the way.) M

 Six Fitness Myths Busted 001

“Tracy’s Total Body Tone-Up”

I know that Tracy Anderson’s diet and fitness tips are not exactly a favorite of most trainers and health professionals, myself included.  (I mean—she asserts that indoor cycling and using dumbbells  heavier than 3 pounds will bulk a woman up—sigh. )

However,  I absolutely LOVE her floor workouts and this one is pretty darn good.

Tracy Anderson in Health magazine 001

“Your Metabolism: Lower Back”

I really appreciated the advice given here on how to protect and strengthen your lower back and think it is especially helpful to fitness professionals.

Your Lower Back 001

“Life Lessons from Olympic Stars”

OMG you guys—the Olympics are coming!!! I can’t wait but in the meantime this article talks to members of the U.S. team about their individual motivation.

Life Lessons from Olympians 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Track? Trail? It’s All Good” Burrr—it’s too cold to talk about running outside!
  • “Winterize Your Skin” Tips and tricks to keep your skin glowing in this insane Vortexy-y weather.
  • “Easiest Home Detox Ever” My shameful secret? I love the smell of chemicals including bleach. I know I need to cut back on them so this feature may help me go a bit greener when cleaning at home. (Like I do THAT often! Ha!)
  • “Body Clues You Shouldn’t Ignore” February is heart health awareness month so the editors of Health want you to know the symptoms is something wrong with your ticker.
