Um, Where Did the Month Go?

I know I say this every few weeks but wow, where on earth does the time go? It’s been almost 6 weeks since I put down some news and notes on this here Blog. Why so long?

Yes, I have been busy which is a good thing. But I realized that on May 16th it was the first anniversary after losing Dad.

It’s been a tough year for sure and we all miss him terribly. I am still wondering if this is a horrible dream sometimes.

However, I have been lucky to have some of the greatest group of friends who have given me love and support at this difficult time. All I can say to them is “thank you.” And I hope any of you reading this post are as lucky as I am to have the support.

If you are ever unsure on what to say when someone experiences a loss and figure it is best to not say anything at all (in order to avoid saying the “wrong” thing)—let me just tell you one thing. All you ever have to say is “I am sorry for your loss.” Trust me—it does the job fine.

My family is in all kinds of states right now as to how they are handling the news one year later. Mom has decided to go a dream vacation to France and I couldn’t be happier for her. (Wish I could have tagged along, but oh well.)

Anyway—I had other things happen this past month so let us get to it, shall we?

Cell Phone Abusers

Do any of you have problems with students using cell phones in class? I feel as if it gets worse every year and I am not sure how to handle it any more. We have signs all over the place and I make an announcement at the beginning of class and yet I still get the occasional mobile phone scofflaw.  How do you all handle this or how does your gym handle this if you are not an instructor?

  • An awesome Tabata workout from Nikki Metzger, Women’s Health Magazine Next Fitness Star who gave me her favorite kick-butt routine.
  • I was lucky enough to meet two Olympians who will compete at the Summer Olympics—Gabby Douglas and Dana Vollmer! I wrote this piece for Fit Bottomed Mamas and each brought their moms to talk about how their maternal guidance helped them to become ace competitors. Both were just about as nice as you can imagine.

Next month I will post yet another interview I recently had with an Olympian! (Hint—she plays soccer.)

A Busy Margo is an Unwell Margo:    

I hate people who complain how busy they are. It’s a major pet peeve of mine.  Like, “please feel sorry/be jealous about how much I have going on in my life.” It’s obnoxious and not helpful at all.

Of course, life can get really complicated at times and say during tax season you will be super-pressed for time getting your forms and receipts together. Or during the holidays getting your gifts ready and prepping for travel with the family will leave you feeling stressed. But people who constantly humble/brag how busy they are make me want to scream. (Does anyone else remember the Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson song of that name?)

Well, lately I have been struggling with being overscheduled and having too many things due at once. I try to be cheerful about it when I describe my days/weekends to people but lately I have been finding it very hard to relax in the evening. I will start pacing my apartment when my work day is done (I work mostly from home) and if the weather is decent I will run an errand to get some air. Most mornings I teach fitness so I don’t need an extra workout.

Then a friend recommended I try meditation which has been a bugaboo for me for many, many years. I have an “unquiet” mind that struggles to find focus and frankly I am getting sick of it. I want to learn to meditate and hopefully I will learn to relax and take better care of my mental health.

Soooo, I am pleased to announce that I am going to be making monthly installments to a new site called Fit Bottomed Zen where I will discuss the latest in mediation trends and will give updates on my progress. Wish me luck and if you have any advice for how I can get more “Zen” in my life, please leave tips/suggestions below.

Anyhoo, back to my life the past few weeks…

AFAA credits:

Are any of you fitness instructors? Do you have the same struggle as me to get in your credits every two years to keep your certification? Mine just expired and I now have to fit in so many online classes to get my credits in. Are there any courses you recommend I take? I was thinking pre-natal and post-menopausal women would be good for my group fitness certification (taking care of different generations of women!)

Have YOU taken any classes from AFAA or IDEA lately that you think was extra cool/helpful—please let me know! I am struggling to fit it into my busy schedule! (Hardy Har Har)

Coming up with a new playlist on a frequent basis is one of the most stressful parts of my job. When I started out I played everything I liked and figured my students would just learn to dig my eclectic tastes. Over time I have learned to tailor my workouts and playlist to a broader audience so that it is not always “the Margo show.” (Big lesson to new instructors out there—play the whole room!)

When my mind runs out of ideas for songs to play in class it is time to power up the four old iPod Classics that I will never throw away even though their collective battery power barely lasts an hour. The iPod classic is now something of a relic as it seems that the marketplace demands for electronics that serve multiple functions. Why have an iPod AND an iPhone? Just have your calendar, photos, email and music in one place makes life so much easier, right?

The thing is—I love the iPod classic because all it does for me is contain my audio files in one place.  I have thousands of songs and podcasts waiting in one easy to scroll screen. (Hate touch screens for song shuffles!)

It never takes messages or runs out space because it only serves one function. When I groove around Brooklyn with my iPod, I enjoy my music without any beeps or dings or buzzes to remind me of text messages or retweets.

My mistake was that I used them solely and not CDs in my classes (which though they are old-timey contain THE best sound for music IMHO) which quickly wore the “classic” down (you can’t replace the battery in those Apple products!)  I reckon I went through an iPod classic every two years which is expensive and wasteful.

Currently I have a collection of them in a drawer in my office. It’s the same drawer that holds the cat treats so whenever I take them out to recharge (which can be an overnight task for one of them) my Tuxedo cat goes nuts until I give her some “Greenies.”

I decided to take all four of them out and do some digging into past playlists with names like ‘If So Ride,” Classic Ride Climb” and the truly cringe-worthy “One Hit Wonder Ride” when I thought themed classes were going to be “my thing.” (Shuddering at my hubris right now—yeesh!)

However, in the middle of my “way too many 90s and white dudes songs” are some real gems that I completely forgot about and I went through and cherry picked a few to reintroduce to my classes. (Hence the name—the “Raiding the iPod Classic Ride.”)

  • Tuesday Morning: The Pougues

This band is about as Irish as it gets which is always a good thing to me and this song in particular is so lush and enjoyable that it starts the ride off in a joyful place.

 

  • I Heard I Had: Dear Rouge

Once again—I am doing everything I can to make this Vancouver band break it big in America so I can see them live in New York. (I have your back Dear Rouge!)

 

  • Battleflag (Radio Edit): Lo Fidelity Allstars

This song was used a few times in the show ER in the 90s to very creepy effect (remember when Dr. Carter was stabbed by the schizophrenic in that crazy episode?!) There is also version and the real version with tons of MFs in it depending on the kind of room you teach.

 

  • I Will Wait: Mumford & Sons

I love how I Will Wait builds in energy (and banjos!) as it moves along.

 

  • Wishing it Was: Santana with Eagle-Eye Cherry

I use this one for a slow climb with heavy resistance and tell me students if they feel sexy listening to it—that’s totally okay. Then I enjoy watching them all sway their shoulders to the beat.

 

  • Lose Control: Missy Elliott and Ciara

Remember at that Super Bowl half time show that started with Katy Perry who was totally upstaged by Missy Elliott? Me too!

 

  • Spaceman: The Killers

For really fast sprints and intervals—you can hardly do better than this one from The Killers.

 

  • The Step and the Walk: The Duke Spirit

I loved this band SO much and have no idea what happened to them. Do any of you have an update?

 

  • South Side: Moby and Gwen Stefani

This song goes right into the dreamy pleasure center in my brain….

 

  • Paralyzer: Finger Eleven

Do you think the name of this band has a dirty double-meaning? Hmmmmmm…

 

  • No Scrubs: TLC

Not only is this song great because TLC sings it but also Kandi Burrus of the Real Housewives of Atlanta wrote it. (Love my Real Housewives…)

 

  • Raise Your Glass: P!nk

Found this one on one of the old iPods and it made me happy right away. The students today loved it as well!

 

  • Wish You Were Here: Radiohead

This version is so completely dope that is blows my mind every time I hear it. Hope it makes your day as well.

I am one of those people who love to complain how I won exactly one trophy when I was a kid. It was by the local Fire Department and they asked for kids in my grade to paint something that would speak to fire prevention. My family was big into camping at the time so I create a pastiche to forest fires which earned me first place which felt great!

(Here I am with my usual tennis shoes and messy hair.)

After that sweet win—personal victories have escaped me. I have won on teams and as part of a group effort but those solo prizes have been few and far between.

Never a winner when my Blogger peeps have a giveaway and I have entered almost every sweepstakes from Shape and SELF magazine with no results except SPAM emails from affiliate advertisers.

You know that game where you have to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar in order to win the prize?

What are the odds a person actually picks the actual number of beans and winds up coming in second because it was a two-way tie decided by a coin toss? (Me at the age of ten and I have NEVER played one of those games since then. It still stings to think about it…)

Well my luck change recently when I noticed a tweet from Reebok which had a photo of yoga goddess Tara Stiles signing a yoga mat. The tweet asked “what would you do if you won a yoga mat signed by Tara” and I quickly wrote back that I would finally learn how to perform a crow pose.

Well guess what? My lucky streak is starting to happen in 2016 because I received the following tweet:

Yippee! The mat arrived in two days and this cat lady is very happy with the design!

Now I just need to learn how to do the crow pose—LOL! Any advice for a crow pose-fearing yoga newbie– leave them in the comments below and hopefully I will be able to nail it sooner than later! (Will post pictures of my progress!)

Well just as 2015 was coming to a close I discovered to my delight that Women’s Health magazine was banning demoralizing cover lines such as “Get a Bikini Bod” and “How to Drop Two Sizes in Two” weeks and I for one could not be more elated about this bit of news. (Check out the full announcement at this link)

I come from a magazine background and have been in those meetings where people try to decide what cover lines will catch a potential buyer’s eye better than the other. Do we promise “Slimmer is 10 Days’ or you can “Drop 10 in 10 days?” Not only are they deceptive but they set you up to feel like a failure for not being able to do just that in the prescribed amount of time.

This Blog started out mainly reviewing the fitness magazine but there have been many times over the years because I just could not put up the covers of the magazines which offered health & fitness goals that were just not physically possible. I branched out which is a good thing but I am a magazine gal at heart and hope more of them will follow this lead!

When I checked out the Women’s Health announcement on Twitter it made me whoop with joy and knew that I just had to interview Editor in Chief Amy Keller Laird to find out how and why they are taking this bold step.

Amy was kind enough to answer a few questions for me before the New Year’s holiday weekend and here they are!

What inspired you to make this declaration?

This past year there has been such an awesome cultural movement toward female empowerment. Just being on social media, you can see that women think about weight loss and fitness differently than they used to—it’s not about everyone having to be thin or the same size or the same shape. It’s about being the best version of yourself.

As a magazine that promotes health and wellness, we wanted to make sure we weren’t falling back on old cover lines that no longer resonate. So we did a survey of our readers, and it verified our thinking.

Listen, does this mean we’re no longer doing stories on how to lose weight healthily or how to sculpt toned abs? Absolutely not. We will still have stories on those topics—it’s about how they’re framed, and getting rid of any subconscious shaming language.

What has the response been so far?

Beyond amazing. From nutritionists to trainers to all kinds of women, there have been thousands of “likes” on social and hundreds of appreciative, supportive comments. Lots of use of the word “awesome.” Or my personal fave response on Twitter from one woman: “Fucking awesome.”

Are you making any New Year’s resolutions for 2016?

Well, I finally pretty much gave up soda in 2015 (props to flavored seltzer water!). In 2016, I need to be more mindful of separating from my devices when I’m around my kids and actually focus on the QT with them!

What is your favorite workout?

Weight circuits with a trainer, or dancing at 305 Fitness. I need other people around for motivation!

Simply cannot believe 2015 is coming to a close and while I am trying to make sense of a year which had far more “lows” than “highs” I wanted to take the time to say ‘”thank you.”  Thanks to every single one of my readers who check out my Blog and make comments. It is SO appreciated.

I discovered my voice while working on “Brooklyn Fit Chick.com” four years ago and have made some of the greatest friends in the whole world in the Blogosphere. I am looking forward to all of the new lessons you have to teach me in 2016 and hope I can make a positive impact in your life as well.

If nothing else—I promise to make you giggle from time to time!

As I get my last few posts written for 2015 allow me the chance to talk about a few news & notes going through my brain right now.

Book Vs Movie Podcast News:

Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and this past year we really kicked serious butt with the downloads. (As Homer Simpson would say—woo hoo!) And believe me when I tell you that hardly anyone I personally know (except for my mother) listens to us so that is pretty damn cool!

Our two top episodes so far are Gone Girl and The Outsiders. If you have any suggestions for us on your favorite book to movie adaptations, leave a comment below and/or at our Facebook Page. (We are always looking for ideas!)

Top Songs for 2015:

Many of you know already that I am a fitness instructor with a passion for putting together the “just right” playlist for each class. I feel as if it is my chance each hour to not only enable good health for a fellow human being but to also get to be a DJ with a captive audience. (I have some control issues to work out…)

My students know that if they want to treat me to a present at the holidays an iTunes gift card will do nicely. I post my personal playlists on this Blog as frequently as I can plus I create them for Fit Bottomed Girls with special themes ranging “Madonna vs. Lady Gaga” to Halloween.

This week I plan to post my picks for the top songs of 2015 and am curious which ones would be on your list? What new tunes did you really dig this year? Here is my handful to start:

Piriformis Trouble:

Last month I told you all that I was having hamstring issues from all of my years of cycling. Unfortunately it looks as if it is a little worse than that. In fact, my symptoms are indicating that I have Piriformis Syndrome which is (if I can be a little crude here) a pain in my butt. This occurs when the piriformis muscle compresses on your sciatic nerve causing a radiating pain down the leg.

It hurts when I sit or lie down for too long and getting out of bed in the morning (if I forget to sleep on a heating pad) is a chore.

Ibuprofen and my BelleCore Body Buffer are my new best friends.  I have been instructed to foam roll as often as a I can and to sit and roll on two lacrosse balls to undo that knot in my muscle twice per day. Icing it down helps a bit as well but every time I see wooden or metal chair my inside my inner voice says “oh sh*t!”

It makes me a bit grumpy to be slowed down in any way but I know that if I do things correctly now it will pay off in the long run. My question for y ’all is if any of you have been through this can you give me your best advice?  I am eager to try just about anything at this point. Thank you in advance!

You know how it is—Thanksgiving shows up out of nowhere and the next thing you know there are gifts to buy, breads to bake and multiple holiday cards to send. It’s a wonder I was able to sneak one in this past week but I did just that (patting herself on the back.)

Those of you who actually know me would not exactly call me “peppy” (spastic, yes but not peppy.) However, this song just got under my skin and I decided to use it in classes this past weekend and everyone loved it. So there you go!

 

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

For every class I teach I make sure  the “second” song is a butt kicker to get everyone in gear and to really get their collective heartrates up. This song might just be a wee bit too fast but, so what? It works!

 

  • Mass Romantic: The New Pornographers

One of my favorite Canadian bands really cooks with this playful tune that has a jangly sound. (I like me some jangle!)

 

  • Adventure of a Lifetime: Coldplay

I know there are Coldplay haters that exist in the world but I don’t give a rat’s butt about any of them. They know how to craft music  that will make you want to move and bop your head to the beat. #teamchrismartin

 

  • Lose Yourself: Eminem

True story—the gym’s stereo broke over this past weekend and I had to use a little boom box in a big room to teach my classes.  That in and of itself was bad enough, but having to play this amazing song by Eminem with a low volume almost killed me! You need volume to really raise the roof with this one. (Truth)

 

  • The Wolf: Mumford & Sons

Thee is nary a banjo in this one from the British band that really rocks it out here.

 

  • 2 Heads: Coleman Hell

Another Canadian (Thunder Bay, Ontario!) on my list and this one DOES indeed use a banjo with amazing results on his song here.

Some people groused about getting a whole free album downloaded (for free!) into their iTunes accounts by one of the biggest bands of all time. (First world problems, people!) I on the other hand think it’s one of their best efforts and this song in particular is beautiful.

All right gang—where on earth did this month go? October is arriving this week and I have not made Halloween plans or changed out my summer wardrobe yet. What gives?

Part of it must be the fact that it is still so darn hot on the east coast that it’s hard to remember that the current season is, in fact, autumn. (Which reminds me—I really need to get another bike ride in before I pack away those padded bikes shorts for the year…)

Anyhoo—I have a few things to discuss today from my groovy podcast to my “Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift” playlist. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we just recorded one of our best episodes yet—Like Water for Chocolate (swoon!) This was the first time I had read the novel from Laura Esquivel and found it very moving.

Magical realism is not my favorite genre of fiction (I am normally a more non-fiction kind of gal) but this tale took me to a whole other part of the world and created a universe that fascinated me.

The film (which for some reason was NOT nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film that year—sheesh!) is a sun-soaked delight that takes the audience on a journey of love, sadness and magic. Check out the player below if you want to hear our latest episode.

Next time we plan to discuss the 50s classic The Bad Seed from William March. (And after that we will tackle The Silence of the Lambs!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a NYC-based reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get to attend fun events and create the content that totally interests me. (Win/Win!) This past week I had two different articles posted and would love to get your feedback on them when you have a free moment.

1: 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Drop Now: This one was inspired by an experience I had recently with a student who habitually showed up late for my spin class. Let’s call her Sheila.

Sheila was a “problem child” for me due to the fact that she dropped in at least ten minutes late and then left early for every single class. Every. Single. One. Plus, she would space out during the ride and sit upright absorbed in her thoughts which distracted the students around her.

I would often hear after a ride ‘What is wrong with her? Why is she always late? Can you do anything about this because she is so distracting?!”

The problem is that she always arrived late and left early so when could I talk to her about this?

Then one morning she sauntered in 15-minutes late into the ride and just shrugged her shoulders at me. I had officially had enough and put my hand and said “Sorry but no, you are too late for this class.”

Sheila glared at me and left right away. Then she quit the gym for good. Suddenly my problem child had vanished and the overwhelming “thank goodness she is gone!” from her (former) fellow riders gave me the idea to write down the bad habits students can bring to class and why they need to stop it now.

2: My second feature is The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist which I was inspired to create after continually reading about a big time beef that the two reigning pop divas seem to be in. Not a big backstory for this one but there you go…

Health Cover Star for September:

Chicago P.D. star Sophia Bush is on the cover and though I haven’t caught that show yet I remember her from One Tree Hill from over ten years ago.  AND I can mention actually getting to meet her then because of my job with YM magazine (a now much-missed teen publication) at the time.

Anyway, Sophia is 33 now and credits her 10-minute morning meditation to keeping her sane and even recommends an app called “Headspace” to help with this which I downloaded right away. (It’s neat!)

She lost her ex-boyfriend Google executive Dan Fredinburg when he trekked to Mount Everest and there was an earthquake during his climb. This experience has been completely devastating for Sophia and made her realize how precious life is.

Sophia relies on the aforementioned meditation and her morning 2-mile runs to keep centered.

Apropos of nothing else I really love the Alexander Wang dress she is wearing on the cover…

I am one of those annoying coconut oil evangelists who will regale you with how many purposes it serves in my life but check out this page and read it for yourself. You will thank me later. (You’re welcome!)

(Like knowing exactly when my mother is planning to visit which I screwed up by 24 hours this morning. True story!) I found that these pages give great tips on how to do just that. (Yes, I will work to apply them.)
  • “60 Beauty Breakthroughs” I love me some beauty stories and here we have new products for skin care, body lotions, make-up, nail colors and hair care. Love!
  • “5 Reasons You’re Always Hungry” I used to have a ravenous appetite after starting a new diet and would want to just eat non-stop. Anyhoo—if you have that issue they have advice here on how to stop the munchies from taking over your life.
  • “9 Probiotic Foods You Have to Try” Included here are Kvass, sauerkraut, kefir and my sister’s favorite thing in the world—kombucha!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Can you believe the summer is halfway over? I have been busier than the proverbial bee these last few months with family obligations, work (day job) and teaching all of my classes that my personal wellness has suffered a bit. I am trying to get back in the saddle diet (healthy eating) and getting more rest at night. The box jumps and sprints will have to wait until I get back to my base level of fitness. Stress can truly be a silent killer and my goal is to learn how to manage it better and not let my health suffer.

Okay—let’s get back to the fun. Today I want to talk about our latest podcast news, a fitness instructor you MUST follow on Twitter and Women’s Health magazine’s newest competition to find the “Next Fitness Star!”

Coach Nicole at Home: Many moons ago when I started out as a fitness instructor I would constantly scour clips on You Tube to get ideas on how to teach an actual class. My first love was teaching spin and it seems daunting to me to try any other kind of classes. Well Coach Nicole Nichols of Spark People pretty much saved my life! The first clip I ever memorized was her 15-Minute Abs Workout which I repeated basically word for word for my own classes. (Truth!)
