Brooklyn Fit Chick: “The Toughest Post I Have Written Yet” 41

Brooklyn Fit Chick

“The Most Difficult Post So Far”

Dad

Dad

Hey All.

Right now as I type this Blog post it is a beautiful (almost) summer day and I should be drinking tequila and hanging out with my friends for a Memorial Day bash.

Instead I am sipping wine with LOGO-TV’s Facts of Life marathon playing in the background trying to comprehend the last 10 days.

Last Saturday (May 16th) my mother called to tell me my father suddenly passed away. He was at a wood turner’s convention in Provo, Utah (an event he enjoyed for many years) when he did not show up for breakfast. His friends went to his room where they found him on the floor.

It took the coroner a few days to get back to us but he basically fainted, fell and hit his head. He died very quickly at the age of 74.

Funnily enough I had a conversation a few days before with a friend about how in life we show up alone and we leave this world the same way.

However, I would never imagine that for either one of my parents. They were always together, attached at the hip as they say. But that is exactly what happened to Dad—he was alone in his final moments.

After 50+ years Mom had to wait for a week to get his remains.

I was and remain in shock over this news. My father is just gone.

I will never hug him again or regale him with stories about annoying parents and their spoiled children who belong to my gym.

We won’t quote Mel Brooks movies or talk like Fredo from The Godfather (“I’m not stupid—I’m smaaaaart!”)

He will never send me “What’s App” videos with his favorite restaurants in Sparks, Nevada or his newest art works again.

Joe Donohue is no longer here.

It’s only been ten days and people tell me it gets worse before you ever feel like yourself. (If you ever really do.)

Friends have been amazing and kind at this time in my life.

I am raw, emotional, vacant, resigned, “stabby,” resilient and sanguine at any moment you try to reach out to me.

I have no idea if I am behaving properly.

A misdeed enrages me and a thoughtful note makes me weepy.

Yesterday I finally had to GET OUT and leave this apartment for more than an hour to go on with my annual pilgrimage to Far Rockaway, NY.

My bike "Trixie"

My bike “Trixie”

The bagel shop I bike out to is exactly 15 miles from my apartment and feels like a whole other world.

My father was from Far Rockaway and could not wait to leave when he graduated from high school. It’s never been clear to me why he hated it (and New York in general) so much but he has never had a sentimental attachment to this city.

Joe Donohue was open-minded and enjoyed (nay—revered) friendliness.

Far Rockaway is cloistered and remote. It’s filled with cops, fireman and teachers. It’s an Irish Catholic enclave that never made him feel “at home.”

He felt restricted there. My father who resembled every beat cop on Law and Order wanted to be around people who were curious about the world around them and did not decorate their homes with shamrocks and crosses.

“Marg—why do you want to go all the way out there?” he would ask me.

I would simply say “the Gil Hodges Bridge.”

Every single time I cross it on my bike “Trixie” (which you are technically NOT allowed to do) thrills me to bits.

Me—the total acrophobic who can’t even see someone on a ledge or watch a movie where heights are involved without getting nauseous will cross a bridge with a narrow passageway that is over traffic and has a small railing to keep you centered.

As I venture from Brooklyn into Queens I can see the ocean all around me. The city is fading behind and I can hear people on boats laughing on the Jamaica Bay.

Nothing else matters and all of my worries fade as I move one peddle stroke at a time with the wind in my face and the cars and city busses roaring below.

It makes zero sense that I find any of this pleasurable but there you go.

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Yesterday I had an image pop into my head as I peddled furiously to Led Zeppelin blasting in my ears.

It’s me at six years-old insisting my father teach me to ride a bike without training wheels.

He held the bike seat as I struggled to gain my balance and coordination. It was a failure and I became totally mad and frustrated with myself. (Basically me learning anything for the first time, by the way.)

How come all of the kids on Clinton Street can ride a two-wheeler and not me? I’m smart AND a tomboy! This should be like a duck taking to water.

Every day I struggled on my own after dinner until one day it just clicked. I got on that purple bike with the streamers and a banana seat while zipping around like a rock star.

Soon enough I went around the block with that BIG hill. It was the best feeling in the whole world!

Racing home I ran up the driveway and yelled for my dad to come out and watch me. He and my mom applauded as my inner bike goddess was roaring to life.

I still remember how proud he was of me and how he smelled when I gave him a tight hug.  (Soap and Old Spice, always.)

Now I must figure out a way to move about the world without him.

This is scary to me but as I crossed that bridge yesterday I knew this is something I am going to have to work out on my own.

I WILL figure it out someday.

That is certain.

Until then, I just need to keep my balance and keep peddling…

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing? I know it has been ages since we have seen each other but it seems as if my desire to have a “drama-free 2015” is a little off base as my sweet cat T is ill and I have been worried about taking proper care of her. I detailed it in a post last week but she has had behavior/neurological issues that we are treating with anti-anxiety medicine and she is responding well so far. At the four-week (Feb 28th) we will know better how she is doing. Keep her in your thoughts!

Anyway—it is FREEZING in the city right now so I am keeping myself busy indoors which includes getting back into the Blogging and Vlogging world and I have tons to discuss—so let’s get to it shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

I wrote this “Love Yo’ Self” playlist for Fit Bottomed Girls to give you all a little musical inspiration to do just that whenever you need a boost. So put some of those tunes on your player and have fun!
  • How to Keep Your Gym Clothes Stink-Free: My good friend Brandi asked me and a few fellow blogger pals our favorite tips for keeping gym things stink-free and you can read about it here! (TapGenes.com)
  • YogaLean Book Giveaway: The giveaways are back and this one is pretty amazing (I must say!) Beth Shaw (President & Founder of YogaFit) has a book out called YogaLean that is filled with yoga poses and yummy recipes to help you lose weight, tone up and live your healthiest life possible. Brooklyn Fit Chick “I Lived” 50-Minute Workout Playlist 28

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“I Lived” (50-Minute Ride)

U2 photographed by John Wright

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist is a mixture of old & new songs as well as different musical genres. Back when I was first teaching classes it was my obsession to have a theme for each ride and every song had to blended seamlessly from one to the next. I had “Prince Vs Michael Jackson,” “Love Stinks,” “90s Only,” “Stadium Rock” and (wince) “Boy vs Girl” bands playlists put together that took hours to assemble.

Here is the thing with theme rides—if any of the students don’t like the theme it becomes the worst hour of their life. So now I make sure to “play the whole room.” meaning if the students are generally into hip hop, get some hip hop in there. If they like pop more than classic rock do NOT play The Eagles. If they prefer hard rock do not force Katy Perry on them.

Seems simple but it took a while for stubborn me to listen to different kinds of music including (gulp) pop which I thought I was too cool for in the past. (Turns out I am probably the biggest P!nk fan alive!)

Today, I am open to play just about anything which has made my playlist selection so much more enjoyable for both me and for my students.

Whatever you do to prepare for your classes—remember the room. Always play to the room and you will be sure to enjoy every session.

Enough of my yakking—here is my newest playlist that got me some major “thumbs up” the last few days I have used it. You’re welcome!

  • I Lived (Party Remix): OneRepublic

I know nothing about OneRepublic (well, except for the fact my friend Missy saw them live and said they were excellent) but their songs are becoming a favorite for me to play in class. This remix version has a fun “entering a stadium” feel to it.

  • Shut Up and Dance: WALK THE MOON (their name is in ALL CAPS for some reason)

This song just cracks me up because it sounds like it could be on the soundtrack for any 80s comedy film ever filmed. I mean this in a good way, by the way.

  • Pon de Peplay: Rhianna

Rumor has it Rhi Rhi is dating Leonardo DiCaprio and is making him work out until he gets a six-pack. I love her for this.

  • Lust for Life: Iggy Pop

Just about everyone in the world knows this song but do you know the story behind it? If you can stand some adult themes and cursing listen to this podcast from This American Life. It will change your life!

  • On the Road Again: Canned Heat

Get the long version of this song (about five minutes) and you take it for a climb. Great 60s groove happening here.

  • Supermassive Black Hole: Muse

The next band I hear that I MUST SEE LIVE is Muse so it is on my musical bucket list.

  • It’s Time: Imagine Dragons

Even my friends who are not into rock music like this band and enjoy this song in particular.

  • Lose Control (featuring Ciara & Fa Man S.): Missy Elliott

In my opinion the Super Bowl halftime show was all about Missy Elliott. She rocked it big time!

  • The Pit: Silversun Pickups

I love this song  for doing some hard core sprints and because it is over four minutes long, you will feel like you really feel the burn.

  • Can You Read My Mind: The Killers

The Killers really know how to write good hooks and this song always motivates my students to work harder.

  • Bohemian Like You: The Dandy Warhols

If you are in the mood to watch an excellent documentary about rock bands going on a tour check out The Dandy Warhols in Dig.

  • Every Breaking Wave: U2

The boys of U2 are busy getting ready for a new world tour and Bono is working on recovering from a bike accident. Hoping I get to see them live and play this tune when they head to NYC!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Blog “The Problem with T” 25

Brooklyn Fit Chick Blog

The Problem with T (& My Need for Self-Care)

Plus: Next “Book Vs Movie” Podcast “High Fidelity”

                                  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing? Normally I reply back “Great!” and keep the conversation but I am going to be honest with all of you. I have had serious health & behavioral issues with my cat that has caused a tremendous amount of anxiety in my life. I know how silly that sounds. “Oh, you have a sick cat? Who cares? Get over it and show her who is boss!”

But it is not that easy. My home life has been taken over by an animal that I completely adore but I am not sure I can take care of much longer.

Tennessee (T) came into my life a little over 3 years ago. She was a lost kitten found by the side of the road by a friend and I fell in love with her after seeing her in just one photo. (Yes, that adorable one above.)

She is a handful as cats go—very excitable, energetic, pushy and domineering. It’s what people either love or hate about her.

I love that she is a brat and doesn’t apologize for it. The apartment was ten times more fun the instant she showed up (though I am sure my other cat differs on this!)

A few weeks ago T had a traumatic experience in my apartment. I had left a pile of recyclables pile up in my hallway and she was playing around in them. I barely noticed when she climbed into a paper bag that was much too small for her. All of a sudden I heard a banging sound as she raced down the hallways and started shrieking for hours. T burst out of the bag thinking she was being smothered and I could not get her to calm down for the life of me.

Days later she seemed okay when all of a sudden she took to sudden bursts of anger aimed towards me. She would stalk me and hiss and snarl loudly at me—her eyes would go black. This would continue for hours with threats to swipe at my feet and attack my legs.

There is no pattern to these outbursts. She will be sweet & snugly one minute and then she her mean temper would return. She has cornered me in my office several times and will stalk back and forth between the kitchen and living room for hours.

After several days of this I finally had the Vet look her over and it was decided she will take Prozac and Xanax to help with her anxiety and trust issues. It’s only been a week but I am starting to get her medicine schedule together into a routine she seems to enjoy. I really hope this works out.

Living with her is like living with an alcoholic. I never know what I am going to expect hour to hour and can never really feel safe or happy when I am home. My whole life I have sought to have my own space where I feel safe and accepted. This problem with T has made me ignore my workouts schedule, cancel plans with friends and in general, interfered with my sanity.

My plan is to take care of T the best I can and hopefully the Prozac will help her moodiness and anxiety. If it doesn’t—it means I am going to have to re-home her. Let me say this again—I love this cat to pieces. However, I need to practice serious “self-care” as I take on her health and mind issues. My “go to” is to take on someone else’s problems and internalize them to the point it makes me ill. This is no ways to live a full life.

I will let you all know how it goes. (Think all of your good thoughts for my T and Sweet Sarah who puts up with way too much in this apartment!)

Thank you for letting me vent! I just have one news item left today (below). The Vlog will return next week come hell or high water!

Brooklyn Fit Chick: “The Dog Scratched at My Face” Post (A Lesson in Gratitude) 6

Brooklyn Fit Chick

“Yep, A Dog Scratched My Face” Post

How I Spent My New Year’s Eve, Lessons on Gratitude,

Plus: My Goal to Be More Like Chris & Theresa in 2015

What up 2015?!

What up 2015?!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So how was your New Year’s Eve? Mine was 99% supremely awesome. I spent it with great friends who live just around the block from me. Do you understand how amazing that is? I could (potentially) drink my weight in champagne and walk home in no time. Oh my, it started off so well.

There was drinking and merriment.

NYE

I wore party shoes (my Kate Spade statement heels)

I hung out with my homies

(It only looks as if there is a branch growing out of the top of my head)

There was a floating shark

“White Lines” by Grand Master Flash invaded the room…

And then….as the clock struck 1 am and I decided to head home. But first I wanted to just pet the home owner’s doggie goodbye as I left and let’s just say…I might have zigged when I should have zagged because it seems as if I got just a little close too his sweet face for comfort as he took a swipe at me missing my left eye by thismuch.

Oh—and while I was cleaning out my wound one of my contacts fell out so I was half blind and trying to assess what just happened to me. (Only a nightmare I have been imagining since I got my first pair of contacts in the seventh grade.)

So this is where the gratefulness comes in—stick with me!

I am grateful because my friend Sage was right there when it happened. He is an ER doctor and made sure I was taken care of right away. He called the local hospital and insisted I get stiches. (I was blubbering about wanting to go home but my friends wisely put the kibosh on that.)

So my friends Chris and Theresa took me to the hospital in Sunset Park on New Year’s Eve which is an interesting night to be at an ER to say the very least. That sat with me until 5 am and kept me calm. We talked movies, music and podcasts when Chris reminded me that an awesome woman named Tina Fey has a scar on her face and it doesn’t stop her from doing anything she wants in her life.

At 5 am I took this selfie to show off my surgeon’s amazing stitching:

me Hospital

I tried to bribe the doctor with a $100 Amex gift card to get some Botox and fillers while we were at it but she explained they don’t keep those on had in the emergency room in Sunset Park. (Never hurts to ask!)

Since then I have been taking it easy on the couch and getting caught up for the next episode of the Book Vs Movie podcast (we are back with our first episode of the 2015 Primary Colors available for download on January 17th!)

Couch

I snuggled with my kitties Tennessee

T with me

And Sweet Sarah

Sarah with me

I have also been fighting a nasty cold at the same time so let’s just say I am currently NOT as pretty as a picture but I am still so damn grateful.

What am I grateful for?

  • I am grateful I have such good friends to hang out with on New Year’s Eve who can also handle an emergency.
  • I am grateful the dog didn’t take out my eye.
  • I am grateful the surgeon took her time to make sure my stitches were handled correctly.
  • I am grateful for Chris and Theresa for taking care of me with no thought to how long it would take and without really knowing the neighborhood we were driving in the middle of the night on New Year’s freaking Eve! (They have ensured very good karma for them in 2015.)
  • I am grateful for all of my friends and family who have been checking in on me.

And just so you know—me and the dog are super cool. He really is a good boy. I know it wasn’t personal.

But when people say let sleeping dogs lie—believe them!

Since then (has it only been 5 days? Wow!) I have taught five spin and two core classes so let’s just say I am a badass who will handle this obstacle. 2014 may have left me bruised and battered but I am determined to kick 2015 right square in the pants no matter what!

I am also thinking of how I am going to incorporate being more like Chris & Theresa from now on because they rock so freaking hard! (Those two crazy kids got engaged this past year so I am sending them a Mazel as well!)

I want to be the kind of person who deserves this much love and care when I am completely vulnerable. They have reminded me about the power of kindness so once again—I am grateful!

Next week I will be back with a fabulous Weight Watchers dance workout kit giveaway so stay tuned when I will post my Vlog again. I hope you understand—with a black eye and a runny nose I just did NOT feel like putting my face on You Tube just yet. Hand to god—next week for sure.

Coming up this week I will have my Tria review and my own personal look at the January Women’s Health magazine so keep checking back here!

What Did We Learn This Month? @FitnessMagazine with Demi Lovato! 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Fitness

January 2015

Demi Lovato photographed by Chris Fortuna

Demi Lovato photographed by Chris Fortuna

Who Is on the Cover of Fitness this Month?

Former Disney Teen Queen Demi Lovato who is about the most accomplished 22-year old I have ever read about in my entire life. Demi is on the road right now with a hyper successful singing career, is the brand ambassador for Sketchers, and has her own skin care line called “Devonne” by Demi. Oh AND she has her own line of hair extensions called Secret Color. (Whew!)

A few years ago things were not looking too good for Demi. Hospitalized for bipolar disorder and bulimia the young star was struggling with mental illness and her self-image. Thankfully she is on something of a health kick with exercise and clean eating being a priority for maintaining her positive mindset.

In her interview with Fitness Demi talks about her favorite workout tunes, how she motivates herself to get a sweat session going wn hen her motivation is low plus her advice for other young women struggling with personal issues.

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Fitness Better Body Plan”

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Stroke Your Metabolism” The Rowing machine is the new “hip” cardio workout to hit the gym and this sample workout will help you burn up to 500 calories an hour.
  • “On the Road to Diabetes?” Diabetes has affected far more friends and family members than I can count so I really want to get the word out there on what people need to look out for to stay healthy. This article highlights that diabetes can hit healthy & fit people as well so be on the lookout for the symptoms and just ditch the cheap sugar habit, people!

Overall Grade:

A- A few really good workouts and smart health stories always make me happy and the January issue did just that!.

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes Plus, Top Workout Songs of 2014! 7

Brooklyn Fit Chick’s New Year’s Workout Goals

Plus:  Top Workout Songs of 2014 (and the Worst!)

This girl is ready for 2015!

This girl is ready for 2015!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I can’t believe this year is finally heading out the window and could not be more grateful to see it go. Not sure what you all have been through in 2014 but I have dealt with health issues, family issues and all sorts of stressful things that have made me feel a little less buoyant than normal. However, I will not allow the past to interfere with my future pleasure so today I am just talking about the good stuff and getting ready for the fabulousness that will be 2015!

First I will do a little housekeeping on the latest BFC things, the Book Vs Movie podcast update, my fitness goals for 2015 and then my picks for the best workout songs of 2014. So let’s do it! (The Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog to return next Sunday with a fantastic New Year’s/New You Giveaway!)

  • Book Vs Movie Podcast: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I are working our butts off to get our new website off the ground plus we are using a fancy podcast service called “Libsyn” to get it out to y’all without all of the drama of our previous service which shall not be named. To get ready start reading Joe Klein’s Primary Colors which was turned into a movie in 1998 and directed by Mike Nichols whom we sadly lost this past year. Read the book and/or watch the movie to prep and we will post the details on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/bookvsmovie?ref=br_tf

  • Tria Hair Removal System: Still using my fabulous Tria hair removal system and am so far impressed with the results. There is less hair growing around the back of my ankles and the side of my face which is making me very happy. I am also using it on my upper lip and underarms and will offer a full review in a week or so.

  • CrossFit Goal for 2015: As you may know I am a “Fit Bottomed Girl” who contributes to fitbottomedgirls.com. The gals at FBG asked me (BFC) if I had any fitness goals I want to accomplish and the first thing that popped in my mind was the box jump. I am terrified of performing a box jump but know that if I can overcome my fear—it will make me feel like a rock star to land a good one just once. Coincidentally a new CrossFit gym opening in Brooklyn (the largest n the borough) called Crow Hill Cross Fit (http://www.crowhillcrossfit.com/) and they said if I want a real trainer to teach me to box jump—then they have me covered. So THAT is going to my first fitness goal to tackle this year. (Stay tuned for updates on this!)

  • The Crow Pose: My second fitness goal is to perform a crow pose. I am not sure how I will manage it but it has been the one pose in yoga that vexes me and I just want do it once to know how great it feels. And then, hopefully, do it many times after that. I will let you know what steps I am taking to make this happen. (Wish me luck!)

And now for something completely different—the Brooklyn Fit Chick Top Workout Songs of 2014!

I have been churning out a couple of playlist each month for the last few years and think I have it down to science at this point. Today I am featuring the songs that made me want to work harder and inspired my students to give a little extra effort during class. So here they are in particular order:

KONGOS/ “Come With Me Now”

Technically I am cheating here because this song came out in Africa in 2011 but they were only introduced in the U.S. this past year so I am putting this in the 2014 column. “Come With Me Now’ has a fantastic hard-driving beat and always made people’s heads bop along to the music.

Mark Ronson (featuring Bruno Mars)/ “Uptown Funk”

Come on—what better song came out this year? Everything about it says move your butt and have some fun. A funky, modern masterpiece that makes you want to sing along and dance with abandon.

Avicii/ “Wake Me Up”

Swedish hotboy Avicii knows how to put together a tune and this one is just about scientifically proven to be THE MOST PERFECT warm-up number for any kind of class you teach. Seriously—I am his biggest fan now.

Dear Rouge/ “I Heard I Had”

This band is from Vancouver and they are winning all sorts of radio contest in Canada. “I Heard I Had” is about as great as a “second” song for a playlist as it gets. Download it now!

OneRepublic/ “Love Runs Out”

A foot-stomping favorite in my classes that always gets people into the best mood.

Taylor Swift/ “Shake It Off”

I don’t care about her dating life nor will I hassle her because she claims to be a New Yorker now (as if!) but damn this woman knows how to write a song that cooks! “Shake it Off’ is just about as perfect of a pop confection as it gets. Brava Taylor!

John Legend/ “All of Me” (Tiesto’s Birthday Treatment)

This is another perfect song for a warm-up that puts people in a good mood. Sweet, romantic and dancy—what is not to like about it?

And the worst workout song for 2014——-“Fancy” by Iggy Azalia

Someone told me Iggy Azalia would be THE big deal this past summer so I started including this dreadful song in my classes. A tuneless, annoying piece of tripe that make me want to gauge my eyes out with my thumbs. My take on Iggy Aazalia? NO. Thank. You!

But if you must hear it for yourself…

That’s all I have for today folks. I am so looking forward to all of the media reviews, playlist, Vlogs, giveaways and gear reviews for the new year. Let’s bring on 2015!!!

This girl is taking a Vlogging/Giveaway break for a few days. Cheers!

This girl is taking a Vlogging/Giveaway break for a few days. Cheers!

Hey there! Hi There! Ho There!

How are you gang? Me? I am fine and dandy but my schedule is just a bit tight right now and I could not get it together for a Vlog post this week. Horrors! I swore when I started this venture that I would never miss a week NO MATTER WHAT. But guess what? Life has a way of moving in on your great plans and throwing them right back into your face while saying “HA!”

However, next week for sure I will be back and up and running. In the meantime I have just a couple of news items for you:

  • Book vs Movie: Our little podcast had our latest episode and here it is Book Vs Movie: Bridget Jones’s Diary. Margo P. and I are launching it on a new website and using a whole new platform to deliver in January so stay tuned for even more fun stuff. Yay!
  • Tria Hair Removal Laser Review: I am in the middle of trying out a new product, the Tria Portable Laser Hair Removal and so far I am loving it. It’s going to be a three-month trial but I will give you more details next week on my Vlog.
  • Running: So I am considering running the Brooklyn Rock & Roll Half Marathon in October and wanted your advice, when should I start training? Please send em your best tips!

Okay–so I will still be here this week for magazine reviews and a possible new playlist. After this week my schedule should hopefully open up and I will be back to Vlogging and giveaways. (Promise!)  Thank you so much for being so understanding.
