Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Featuring Eminem, The Weeknd, JR JR and More! 15

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Gone” Playlist (50 Minute-Ride)

187596325-eminem

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How on earth did a whole month go by without me creating a new playlist? Sheesh! You know how it is—Thanksgiving shows up out of nowhere and the next thing you know there are gifts to buy, breads to bake and multiple holiday cards to send. It’s a wonder I was able to sneak one in this past week but I did just that (patting herself on the back.)

Let me know what you think of it and remember—I need song suggestions, always. So be sure to post them in the comments below!

Thanks!

  • Gone: JR JR

The band’s PR rep got in touch with me via my work for Fit Bottomed Girls where I am compiling a peppy/upbeat playlist to post sometime in January.

Those of you who actually know me would not exactly call me “peppy” (spastic, yes but not peppy.) However, this song just got under my skin and I decided to use it in classes this past weekend and everyone loved it. So there you go!

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

For every class I teach I make sure  the “second” song is a butt kicker to get everyone in gear and to really get their collective heartrates up. This song might just be a wee bit too fast but, so what? It works!

  • Mass Romantic: The New Pornographers

One of my favorite Canadian bands really cooks with this playful tune that has a jangly sound. (I like me some jangle!)

  • Adventure of a Lifetime: Coldplay

I know there are Coldplay haters that exist in the world but I don’t give a rat’s butt about any of them. They know how to craft music  that will make you want to move and bop your head to the beat. #teamchrismartin

  • Lose Yourself: Eminem

True story—the gym’s stereo broke over this past weekend and I had to use a little boom box in a big room to teach my classes.  That in and of itself was bad enough, but having to play this amazing song by Eminem with a low volume almost killed me! You need volume to really raise the roof with this one. (Truth)

  • The Wolf: Mumford & Sons

Thee is nary a banjo in this one from the British band that really rocks it out here.

  • 2 Heads: Coleman Hell

Another Canadian (Thunder Bay, Ontario!) on my list and this one DOES indeed use a banjo with amazing results on his song here.

  • Can’t feel My Face: The Weeknd

ANOTHER Canadian (Toronto!) and this is his biggest hit in the U.S. so far. Just try to listen and move to the beat—it’s impossible!

  • Price Tag: Jessie J

I love this song because it mixes unbridled optimism with a fun /not-posh British accent.

  • Cannibal: Silversun Pickups

The Silversun Pickups write songs that are so hard charging and excellent that they are virtually all perfect for high speed sprints and intervals.

  • Please Don’t Leave Me: P!nk

Alecia Moore (P!nk’s real name!) writes some of the sweetest ear candy in the whole world and this romantic song always gets to me.

  • Time to Pretend: MGMT

Whatever happened to this band? Does anyone know?

  • Song for Someone: U2

Some people groused about getting a whole free album downloaded (for free!) into their iTunes accounts by one of the biggest bands of all time. (First world problems, people!) I on the other hand think it’s one of their best efforts and this song in particular is beautiful.

That’s it for me this time. Now go out there get your workout in!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Notes: “Like Water for Chocolate” 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Want Students to Drop NOw 40

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

“Book vs Movie” Podcast Episode “Like Water for Chocolate”

“6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Stop Now”

“The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist”

 brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

All right gang—where on earth did this month go? October is arriving this week and I have not made Halloween plans or changed out my summer wardrobe yet. What gives?

Part of it must be the fact that it is still so darn hot on the east coast that it’s hard to remember that the current season is, in fact, autumn. (Which reminds me—I really need to get another bike ride in before I pack away those padded bikes shorts for the year…)

Anyhoo—I have a few things to discuss today from my groovy podcast to my “Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift” playlist. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we just recorded one of our best episodes yet—Like Water for Chocolate (swoon!) This was the first time I had read the novel from Laura Esquivel and found it very moving.

Magical realism is not my favorite genre of fiction (I am normally a more non-fiction kind of gal) but this tale took me to a whole other part of the world and created a universe that fascinated me.

The film (which for some reason was NOT nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film that year—sheesh!) is a sun-soaked delight that takes the audience on a journey of love, sadness and magic. Check out the player below if you want to hear our latest episode.

Next time we plan to discuss the 50s classic The Bad Seed from William March. (And after that we will tackle The Silence of the Lambs!)

What are your favorite books to movies adaptations? I want to hear about them in the comments below!

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a NYC-based reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get to attend fun events and create the content that totally interests me. (Win/Win!) This past week I had two different articles posted and would love to get your feedback on them when you have a free moment.

1: 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Drop Now: This one was inspired by an experience I had recently with a student who habitually showed up late for my spin class. Let’s call her Sheila.

Sheila was a “problem child” for me due to the fact that she dropped in at least ten minutes late and then left early for every single class. Every. Single. One. Plus, she would space out during the ride and sit upright absorbed in her thoughts which distracted the students around her.

I would often hear after a ride ‘What is wrong with her? Why is she always late? Can you do anything about this because she is so distracting?!”

The problem is that she always arrived late and left early so when could I talk to her about this?

Then one morning she sauntered in 15-minutes late into the ride and just shrugged her shoulders at me. I had officially had enough and put my hand and said “Sorry but no, you are too late for this class.”

Sheila glared at me and left right away. Then she quit the gym for good. Suddenly my problem child had vanished and the overwhelming “thank goodness she is gone!” from her (former) fellow riders gave me the idea to write down the bad habits students can bring to class and why they need to stop it now.

Are any of you instructors? Have you ever had a “Sheila” to deal with in your career? What bad habits would you add to this list?

2: My second feature is The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist which I was inspired to create after continually reading about a big time beef that the two reigning pop divas seem to be in. Not a big backstory for this one but there you go…

Do you think Katy and Taylor are feuding? Why on earth would they even bother?

Oh well, that’ all for me this week. I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Later gators!

What Did We Learn This Month? @goodhealth Health mag with Sophia Bush on the Cover! 17

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

September 2015

Sophia Bush photographed by Matt Jones

Sophia Bush photographed by Matt Jones

Health Cover Star for September:

Chicago P.D. star Sophia Bush is on the cover and though I haven’t caught that show yet I remember her from One Tree Hill from over ten years ago.  AND I can mention actually getting to meet her then because of my job with YM magazine (a now much-missed teen publication) at the time.

Anyway, Sophia is 33 now and credits her 10-minute morning meditation to keeping her sane and even recommends an app called “Headspace” to help with this which I downloaded right away. (It’s neat!)

She lost her ex-boyfriend Google executive Dan Fredinburg when he trekked to Mount Everest and there was an earthquake during his climb. This experience has been completely devastating for Sophia and made her realize how precious life is.

Sophia relies on the aforementioned meditation and her morning 2-mile runs to keep centered.

Apropos of nothing else I really love the Alexander Wang dress she is wearing on the cover…

So what else is inside the September Health?

“Yoga for Killer Arms”

Yoga and Pilates instructor Kristin McGee demonstrates how to perform a proper chaturanga to strengthen your upper body. (It took me months to figure out how to do these at first.)

Yoga arms health magazine 001

“Your Better Leg (and Butt!) Plan”

Gwyneth’s favorite fitness guru, Tracy Anderson, is a regular in the pages of Health and she is famous for complicated leg lifts with multiple (and I mean multiple) reps that will leave you begging for mercy. This page will give you just that.

Tracy Anderson in Health magazine 001

“Coconut Oil Hacks”

I am one of those annoying coconut oil evangelists who will regale you with how many purposes it serves in my life but check out this page and read it for yourself. You will thank me later. (You’re welcome!)

Coconut Oil Hacks health mag 001

“Love All”

I am not a very good tennis player but LOVE the outfits and some of the items featured here can be worn to any workout. Win/win, people!

Tennis gear for Health magazine 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Memory: A User’s Manual” It is my goal to improve my ability to memorize and remember things. (Like knowing exactly when my mother is planning to visit which I screwed up by 24 hours this morning. True story!) I found that these pages give great tips on how to do just that. (Yes, I will work to apply them.)
  • “60 Beauty Breakthroughs” I love me some beauty stories and here we have new products for skin care, body lotions, make-up, nail colors and hair care. Love!
  • “5 Reasons You’re Always Hungry” I used to have a ravenous appetite after starting a new diet and would want to just eat non-stop. Anyhoo—if you have that issue they have advice here on how to stop the munchies from taking over your life.
  • “9 Probiotic Foods You Have to Try” Included here are Kvass, sauerkraut, kefir and my sister’s favorite thing in the world—kombucha!

Follow Heath online at: www.Health.com

Overall Grade:

B+ There are some smart features in this issue which I appreciate but I was hoping for at least one complete workout to take away.

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes: “Book Vs Movie” Field of Dreams, Coach Nicole at Home and Women’s Health “Next Fitness Star” 15

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes: Week of July 10th Edition

“Book vs Movie” Podcast News (Field of Dreams & Stand By Me)

“Coach Nicole” Flies Solo on Her New Venture

Plus: Women’s Health Magazine’s “Next Fitness Star” Competition

brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Can you believe the summer is halfway over? I have been busier than the proverbial bee these last few months with family obligations, work (day job) and teaching all of my classes that my personal wellness has suffered a bit. I am trying to get back in the saddle diet (healthy eating) and getting more rest at night. The box jumps and sprints will have to wait until I get back to my base level of fitness. Stress can truly be a silent killer and my goal is to learn how to manage it better and not let my health suffer.

Okay—let’s get back to the fun. Today I want to talk about our latest podcast news, a fitness instructor you MUST follow on Twitter and Women’s Health magazine’s newest competition to find the “Next Fitness Star!”

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) recorded our Field of Dreams episode last week and think it’s one of our best episodes yet.  (Did you know the Kevin Costner classic was a book first? It was called Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella and boy did they make some changes between them!)

You can listen to the link below and if you have harbored a crush on actor Dwier Brown who played Ray’s dad (swoon!) then you will appreciate how excited I got when he responded to our shout-out on Twitter! (Yippee!) You can follow him on Twitter as well @dwierbrown and he also has a website www.dwierbrown.com.

With our next episode we are going back to the 1950s with Stand By Me from Stephen King (also known as the novella The Body)

We are planning our next few episodes so if there are any books & movies you want us to cover—feel free to comment below!

Coach Nicole at Home: Many moons ago when I started out as a fitness instructor I would constantly scour clips on You Tube to get ideas on how to teach an actual class. My first love was teaching spin and it seems daunting to me to try any other kind of classes. Well Coach Nicole Nichols of Spark People pretty much saved my life! The first clip I ever memorized was her 15-Minute Abs Workout which I repeated basically word for word for my own classes. (Truth!)

Well Coach Nicole is on to her next venture and will soon be hosting workouts on her very own website which goes live on August 1st. In the meantime, be sure to like her Facebook page and follow her on Twitter here. (love you Coach Nicole!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Thank you for being patient with me while I took some time to be with my family and travel a bit. My father passed away on May 16th and we held his Memorial Service last weekend in Reno where he and mom retired to in 2003. In the 12 years he lived there my dad made such a positive impact on the community it was a packed house and I had the pleasure of meeting dozens of people who promise to carry on my father’s mission on community service and supporting local artists.

It was all so very sad yet inspiring and I am choosing to take his spirit with me as I face the challenges of my life in front of me.

My eating and workout habits have been sliding these last few weeks but I am now on track to get back to my healthiest state and create positive & happy memories in the future. Any advice on how to get back in the saddle of regular workouts because if so—please send them my way.

In the meantime—let’s get to this week’s news, notes, playlists and then on to my newest giveaway!

The Fit Bottomed Girls “BFF” Playlist

My Top Bike Rides in NYC (Terry Bikes)

Me getting my "om" on in Times Square!

Me getting my “om” on in Times Square!

Hey Gang!

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity between work, life and you know—trying to fit in a fun activity or two. My summer has been a little too busy for my taste but I am hoping things will settle down soon and I can better about staying in touch. So let me tell you about a few things happening in my world and then I want to hear what is going on with you!

Without further ado—let’s get to this week’s main post!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Yoga in Times Square (For Reals!): June 21, 2015 was declared the world’s first “International Day of Yoga” with fabulous Zen-like events taking place around the globe including the annual Summer Solstice in Times Square which I covered a few years ago for Fit Bottomed Girls. It was so magical that when I had the chance to once again go into the middle of NYC and do some yoga on a hot summer afternoon—I jumped at it.

It is indescribable the feeling of trying out the mountain pose or a backward bend and being in the middle of one of the most celebrated places in the world. Somehow in the heat, humidity, car noises and usual tourists rambling about we were able to find a peaceful place in our minds. I wish I had taken more photos but I was just so caught up in the moment that I only have these to share with you. Next time you will all just have to out here with me to see it for yourself!

Did you celebrate International Day of Yoga? Where were you and what classes did you take?

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) had planned to record our first “80s” era episode with the classic Less Than Zero when Amazon Prime decided to NOT ship her DVD in time (grrr.) Have no fear—we will record that podcast very soon because we are both DYING to talk about Andrew McCarthy and James Spader but it gave us an opportunity to turn to the vaults.

Soooo we decided to go back to our archives and release a past episode where we discussed The Help. (Many people have asked for this one!)

Did you read/see The Help? What did you think of it? I have the link below if you want to check it out for yourself.

Fit Bottomed Girls Playlist: I am lucky enough to write for Fit Bottomed Girls and this past week they had their annual “BFF” (Best Friend Forever) celebration where they talked about how amazing (and much needed) a BFF is on our lives ( I certainly love mine!) So I put together the BFF Workout Playlist and wanted to ask you—what song reminds you of your BFF? What would you add to my list?

Terry Bikes Ambassador: Those of you who know me know that I am a woman who loves her bike and try to ride it as often as I can. Terry Bikes makes the best riding gear for women who are serious athletes and the cutest (and appropriate) streetwear for ladies who like to look effortlessly chic on a bike. Being their Brand Ambassador means I get to try out new gear form time to time which is THE BEST! In return I write them some Blog posts form time to time and in this one I talk about my favorite places to ride in NYC.

Where do you go bike riding?

That’s all for me this week. I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Stay in touch!

Brooklyn Fit Chick: “The Toughest Post I Have Written Yet” 41

Brooklyn Fit Chick

“The Most Difficult Post So Far”

Dad

Dad

Hey All.

Right now as I type this Blog post it is a beautiful (almost) summer day and I should be drinking tequila and hanging out with my friends for a Memorial Day bash.

Instead I am sipping wine with LOGO-TV’s Facts of Life marathon playing in the background trying to comprehend the last 10 days.

Last Saturday (May 16th) my mother called to tell me my father suddenly passed away. He was at a wood turner’s convention in Provo, Utah (an event he enjoyed for many years) when he did not show up for breakfast. His friends went to his room where they found him on the floor.

It took the coroner a few days to get back to us but he basically fainted, fell and hit his head. He died very quickly at the age of 74.

Funnily enough I had a conversation a few days before with a friend about how in life we show up alone and we leave this world the same way.

However, I would never imagine that for either one of my parents. They were always together, attached at the hip as they say. But that is exactly what happened to Dad—he was alone in his final moments.

After 50+ years Mom had to wait for a week to get his remains.

I was and remain in shock over this news. My father is just gone.

I will never hug him again or regale him with stories about annoying parents and their spoiled children who belong to my gym.

We won’t quote Mel Brooks movies or talk like Fredo from The Godfather (“I’m not stupid—I’m smaaaaart!”)

He will never send me “What’s App” videos with his favorite restaurants in Sparks, Nevada or his newest art works again.

Joe Donohue is no longer here.

It’s only been ten days and people tell me it gets worse before you ever feel like yourself. (If you ever really do.)

Friends have been amazing and kind at this time in my life.

I am raw, emotional, vacant, resigned, “stabby,” resilient and sanguine at any moment you try to reach out to me.

I have no idea if I am behaving properly.

A misdeed enrages me and a thoughtful note makes me weepy.

Yesterday I finally had to GET OUT and leave this apartment for more than an hour to go on with my annual pilgrimage to Far Rockaway, NY.

My bike "Trixie"

My bike “Trixie”

The bagel shop I bike out to is exactly 15 miles from my apartment and feels like a whole other world.

My father was from Far Rockaway and could not wait to leave when he graduated from high school. It’s never been clear to me why he hated it (and New York in general) so much but he has never had a sentimental attachment to this city.

Joe Donohue was open-minded and enjoyed (nay—revered) friendliness.

Far Rockaway is cloistered and remote. It’s filled with cops, fireman and teachers. It’s an Irish Catholic enclave that never made him feel “at home.”

He felt restricted there. My father who resembled every beat cop on Law and Order wanted to be around people who were curious about the world around them and did not decorate their homes with shamrocks and crosses.

“Marg—why do you want to go all the way out there?” he would ask me.

I would simply say “the Gil Hodges Bridge.”

Every single time I cross it on my bike “Trixie” (which you are technically NOT allowed to do) thrills me to bits.

Me—the total acrophobic who can’t even see someone on a ledge or watch a movie where heights are involved without getting nauseous will cross a bridge with a narrow passageway that is over traffic and has a small railing to keep you centered.

As I venture from Brooklyn into Queens I can see the ocean all around me. The city is fading behind and I can hear people on boats laughing on the Jamaica Bay.

Nothing else matters and all of my worries fade as I move one peddle stroke at a time with the wind in my face and the cars and city busses roaring below.

It makes zero sense that I find any of this pleasurable but there you go.

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Yesterday I had an image pop into my head as I peddled furiously to Led Zeppelin blasting in my ears.

It’s me at six years-old insisting my father teach me to ride a bike without training wheels.

He held the bike seat as I struggled to gain my balance and coordination. It was a failure and I became totally mad and frustrated with myself. (Basically me learning anything for the first time, by the way.)

How come all of the kids on Clinton Street can ride a two-wheeler and not me? I’m smart AND a tomboy! This should be like a duck taking to water.

Every day I struggled on my own after dinner until one day it just clicked. I got on that purple bike with the streamers and a banana seat while zipping around like a rock star.

Soon enough I went around the block with that BIG hill. It was the best feeling in the whole world!

Racing home I ran up the driveway and yelled for my dad to come out and watch me. He and my mom applauded as my inner bike goddess was roaring to life.

I still remember how proud he was of me and how he smelled when I gave him a tight hug.  (Soap and Old Spice, always.)

Now I must figure out a way to move about the world without him.

This is scary to me but as I crossed that bridge yesterday I knew this is something I am going to have to work out on my own.

I WILL figure it out someday.

That is certain.

Until then, I just need to keep my balance and keep peddling…

How are you all doing? I know it has been ages since we have seen each other but it seems as if my desire to have a “drama-free 2015” is a little off base as my sweet cat T is ill and I have been worried about taking proper care of her. I detailed it in a post last week but she has had behavior/neurological issues that we are treating with anti-anxiety medicine and she is responding well so far. At the four-week (Feb 28th) we will know better how she is doing. Keep her in your thoughts!

Anyway—it is FREEZING in the city right now so I am keeping myself busy indoors which includes getting back into the Blogging and Vlogging world and I have tons to discuss—so let’s get to it shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick “I Lived” 50-Minute Workout Playlist 28

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“I Lived” (50-Minute Ride)

U2 photographed by John Wright

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist is a mixture of old & new songs as well as different musical genres. Back when I was first teaching classes it was my obsession to have a theme for each ride and every song had to blended seamlessly from one to the next. I had “Prince Vs Michael Jackson,” “Love Stinks,” “90s Only,” “Stadium Rock” and (wince) “Boy vs Girl” bands playlists put together that took hours to assemble.

Here is the thing with theme rides—if any of the students don’t like the theme it becomes the worst hour of their life. So now I make sure to “play the whole room.” meaning if the students are generally into hip hop, get some hip hop in there. If they like pop more than classic rock do NOT play The Eagles. If they prefer hard rock do not force Katy Perry on them.

Seems simple but it took a while for stubborn me to listen to different kinds of music including (gulp) pop which I thought I was too cool for in the past. (Turns out I am probably the biggest P!nk fan alive!)

Today, I am open to play just about anything which has made my playlist selection so much more enjoyable for both me and for my students.

Whatever you do to prepare for your classes—remember the room. Always play to the room and you will be sure to enjoy every session.

Enough of my yakking—here is my newest playlist that got me some major “thumbs up” the last few days I have used it. You’re welcome!

  • I Lived (Party Remix): OneRepublic

I know nothing about OneRepublic (well, except for the fact my friend Missy saw them live and said they were excellent) but their songs are becoming a favorite for me to play in class. This remix version has a fun “entering a stadium” feel to it.

  • Shut Up and Dance: WALK THE MOON (their name is in ALL CAPS for some reason)

This song just cracks me up because it sounds like it could be on the soundtrack for any 80s comedy film ever filmed. I mean this in a good way, by the way.

  • Pon de Peplay: Rhianna

Rumor has it Rhi Rhi is dating Leonardo DiCaprio and is making him work out until he gets a six-pack. I love her for this.

  • Lust for Life: Iggy Pop

Just about everyone in the world knows this song but do you know the story behind it? If you can stand some adult themes and cursing listen to this podcast from This American Life. It will change your life!

  • On the Road Again: Canned Heat

Get the long version of this song (about five minutes) and you take it for a climb. Great 60s groove happening here.

  • Supermassive Black Hole: Muse

The next band I hear that I MUST SEE LIVE is Muse so it is on my musical bucket list.

  • It’s Time: Imagine Dragons

Even my friends who are not into rock music like this band and enjoy this song in particular.

  • Lose Control (featuring Ciara & Fa Man S.): Missy Elliott

In my opinion the Super Bowl halftime show was all about Missy Elliott. She rocked it big time!

  • The Pit: Silversun Pickups

I love this song  for doing some hard core sprints and because it is over four minutes long, you will feel like you really feel the burn.

  • Can You Read My Mind: The Killers

The Killers really know how to write good hooks and this song always motivates my students to work harder.

  • Bohemian Like You: The Dandy Warhols

If you are in the mood to watch an excellent documentary about rock bands going on a tour check out The Dandy Warhols in Dig.

  • Every Breaking Wave: U2

The boys of U2 are busy getting ready for a new world tour and Bono is working on recovering from a bike accident. Hoping I get to see them live and play this tune when they head to NYC!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Blog “The Problem with T” 25

Brooklyn Fit Chick Blog

The Problem with T (& My Need for Self-Care)

Plus: Next “Book Vs Movie” Podcast “High Fidelity”

                                  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing? Normally I reply back “Great!” and keep the conversation but I am going to be honest with all of you. I have had serious health & behavioral issues with my cat that has caused a tremendous amount of anxiety in my life. I know how silly that sounds. “Oh, you have a sick cat? Who cares? Get over it and show her who is boss!”

But it is not that easy. My home life has been taken over by an animal that I completely adore but I am not sure I can take care of much longer.

Tennessee (T) came into my life a little over 3 years ago. She was a lost kitten found by the side of the road by a friend and I fell in love with her after seeing her in just one photo. (Yes, that adorable one above.)

She is a handful as cats go—very excitable, energetic, pushy and domineering. It’s what people either love or hate about her.

I love that she is a brat and doesn’t apologize for it. The apartment was ten times more fun the instant she showed up (though I am sure my other cat differs on this!)

A few weeks ago T had a traumatic experience in my apartment. I had left a pile of recyclables pile up in my hallway and she was playing around in them. I barely noticed when she climbed into a paper bag that was much too small for her. All of a sudden I heard a banging sound as she raced down the hallways and started shrieking for hours. T burst out of the bag thinking she was being smothered and I could not get her to calm down for the life of me.

Days later she seemed okay when all of a sudden she took to sudden bursts of anger aimed towards me. She would stalk me and hiss and snarl loudly at me—her eyes would go black. This would continue for hours with threats to swipe at my feet and attack my legs.

There is no pattern to these outbursts. She will be sweet & snugly one minute and then she her mean temper would return. She has cornered me in my office several times and will stalk back and forth between the kitchen and living room for hours.

After several days of this I finally had the Vet look her over and it was decided she will take Prozac and Xanax to help with her anxiety and trust issues. It’s only been a week but I am starting to get her medicine schedule together into a routine she seems to enjoy. I really hope this works out.

Living with her is like living with an alcoholic. I never know what I am going to expect hour to hour and can never really feel safe or happy when I am home. My whole life I have sought to have my own space where I feel safe and accepted. This problem with T has made me ignore my workouts schedule, cancel plans with friends and in general, interfered with my sanity.

My plan is to take care of T the best I can and hopefully the Prozac will help her moodiness and anxiety. If it doesn’t—it means I am going to have to re-home her. Let me say this again—I love this cat to pieces. However, I need to practice serious “self-care” as I take on her health and mind issues. My “go to” is to take on someone else’s problems and internalize them to the point it makes me ill. This is no ways to live a full life.

I will let you all know how it goes. (Think all of your good thoughts for my T and Sweet Sarah who puts up with way too much in this apartment!)

Thank you for letting me vent! I just have one news item left today (below). The Vlog will return next week come hell or high water!

  • Book Vs Movie Podcast: We have started a new platform for the Margo & Margo podcast “Book Vs Movie” podcast and you can subscribe at this iTunes link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2. Our next episode will be High Fidelity by Nick Hornby (and the John Cusack film)—whoo hoo! We are also on Sticher radio (for all of your Android peeps) and the web site will be ready soon—promise!
