Last week I was not feeling well and could not film my regular Vlog but this week I am BACK and with a whole new giveaway. New York has been enjoying a lovely “last gasp of summer’ weather and I have been sure to get out there and enjoy it.

I have been talking about a the podcast that Margo P. and I have created called Book vs. Movie podcast where we talk about books that have been turned into movies and discuss the differences between them.   • Wanderlust Festival Post in Fit Bottomed Girls: A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn and my feature is now up on Fit Bottomed Girls with the greatest headline I will ever come up with again: The Om Before The Storm (damn, I am clever!)
  • Kinky Boots on Broadway: I have been hearing for months that the Kinky Boots musical is a must-see but I resisted. Sure, the movie was fun but how would it work on Broadway? Well let me tell you—when you have Harvey Fierstein and music by Cindi Lauper you have a magical experience at hand. I absolutely LOVED this show and recommend you catch it when it comes to your town.

Fall is in the air and at this time of year I find myself in the mood for fresh, new ideas. I actually care about this New York Fashion Week (versus the one that takes place in the middle of winter) and my thoughts turn to settling down in the evenings and snuggling with my kitties.

This week I delved into “The Help,” went to a rather usual fashion show and attended the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn. So much to discuss so let’s get to it shall we?

  • Book vs. Movie Episode 5 “The Help”: The power “Margos” plunged ahead with our fifth episode Book vs. Movie podcast and this time we talked about Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help which was turned into a movie in 2011. So which did we like more? The novel or the film? Check our podcast to find out. In the meantime we are hoping to have them available on Stitcher and iTunes soon (wish us luck!)

  • Ride the Runway with Reebok: On assignment for Fit Bottomed Girls I went to the Reebok Riding the Runway which was basically a spin class with a fashion show involved. Cyc Fitness created the spin workout that was held at the Reebok Fithub in Union Square. During the ride we were treated to a fashion show which was pretty damn cool and I will send you the link for the full story as soon as it runs.
  • Wanderlust Yoga Festival Brooklyn: This past Saturday my beloved Brooklyn was home to the first yoga/5 k festival and before the rains came upon us—everyone in attendance was treated to a meditation session by yoga superstar Elena Brower. I will tell you more about my meeting with Elena Brower at the press conference (she is so amazing) in the Vlog below. (Story to also be featured on Fit Bottomed Girls.

  • Book vs. Movie Episode 4: The insane partnership of the “Margos” continues with our latest episode of our Book vs. Movie podcast.  This week in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary we decided to delve into all things “Gump” by talking about the differences between the book and movie version of Forrest Gump by author Winston Groom.  How different are they from each other you ask? Whoo boy—they are worlds apart but each has their own unique charm. If you have some time—click on the link and take a listen.   • Pongo Power! Some of you may be aware that I am a trainer but did you know that I am NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certified trainer? Well, yes I am and it is with great pleasure to announce that I am now training at the NASM-based only studio– Pongo Power with two locations in Brooklyn—yay!  Pongo Power was started by Elizabeth Pongo who is just about the smartest and funniest person I have met in some time. Elizabeth started with a small studio in Park Slope and has since developed a loyal clientele who wait for weeks to get an appointment with her.

  • Wanderlust Yoga Festival Brooklyn: Speaking of cool places in Brooklyn—Prospect Park will be a whole day of “Om” goodness with the arrival of the Wanderlust Yoga Festival taking place Saturday, September 13th with a day’s worth of yoga, meditation and music.   • Athleta Fashion Show: This past week I was lucky enough to attend the Athleta “Crush of Adrenaline” fashion show that featured real athletes, dancers and acrobats as models. Honestly, I have lived in New York City for years and have been to my fair share of runway events but this one really knocked my socks off. This past week flew by in a whirl for me. I am starting a new job soon (on top of everything else I do) plus it seems that all of my friends wanted to hang out with me lately which is amazing (of course) but also a bit tiring! In the spirit of my fading ability to stay awake today in am going to try and keep things short and sweet this week while also letting you know about my groovy new book giveaway: Learning to Breathe Fire by J.C.   • Book vs. Movie Episode 2: As you may already know—the lovely Margo P. of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast and I have launched our first podcast Book vs Movie. Last Friday we recorded the second half of our two-part dive into both the film and the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. How are you all doing today? I have so much news to talk about today that I can hardly contain myself so I will just dive right in with the highlights and then preview for my next giveaway—Strong is the New Skinny by awesome trainer Jennifer Cohen. Wee!

  • Book vs. Movie Episode 1: So excited to announce that Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast and I have launched our first podcast Book vs Movie. Last Friday we aired our first episode talking about both the film & movie version of Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil (Kevin Spacey played him in the utterly forgettable Clint Eastwood film.)  We had a total blast and lost all track of time so we are recording part 2 this very week. Our hope is to get a few episodes in the can so we can have them available in iTunes.   • The Blonde Vegan Changes Her Tune: I am NOT a vegan and happily get my protein from sustainable responsible meat vendors but I also follow a great many Vegan people on Facebook & Twitter as they are usually animal lovers and I am a fan of the furry critters.  Anyhoo—I was fascinated by the following post by Blogger Jordan of The Blonde Vegan who is absconding from the meat-free/pro-juicer lifestyle as it is causing her to suffer from Orthorexia which is a type of eating disorder where a person has an obsession with being “healthy.” To the point that they are not living happiest lives. I am not doing her justice (sorry Jordan!) please just read her post!

 

  • Eleven by Venus: So last week I had a very cool thing happen where I got to meet many of my fellow ambassadors for Venus Williams’ fashion/fitness line EleVen by Venus via a conference call and guess who was on the line with us—VENUS!!! I was so gaga when she greeted us that I squealed like a child. We had a special advanced look at their upcoming winter and spring collections and let’s just say my bank account is going to take a hit from it!

It’s here! Today is the day I can finally announce the BIG NEWS that I am partnering with the lovely & talented Margo P. of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast for our first podcast—Book Vs. Movie! Ta dah!

Yes! It is true. The two Margos are pulling our collective talents together to create a podcast devoted to two things that we both love—books and movies. We found this out a few weeks ago when we came back from the Fitbloggin convention which took place in Savannah this year. Margo & I get together every year after Fitbloggin to chat for an hour or so on her podcast to talk about what we loved (and didn’t love) whilst hanging out with our fitness peeps.

This year we wound up spending so much time talking about the John Brendt book (and later the Clint Eastwood film) Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil that it got me thinking—maybe Margo & I can co-host a podcast based on the two of us just chatting about books and movies? No kids, no diets, no workouts, no #justtrollin and no “how do I manage all of the facets of my life” kind of podcast. We are going to keep it fun and lively because dammit—we all deserve to have both in our lives!

So guess what?  We are going live this Friday, August 1st at 6 pm eastern time and then the link will be available online and on ITunes. Please check back with us either on our brand new Facebook page Book vs. Movie (which we encourage you to “like”) to get all of our latest news and to know what exactly we will be talking about for each episode.

For the Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil book you should be able to find it at your local library (it’s one of those sensations that will always be popular) but you can also find second-hand copies on Amazon.com for less than a penny (minus shipping and handling, of course.)

The Clint Eastwood film is available Amazon.com, ITunes and if you are a real cheapskate— the full movie is on YouTube.

We will be working out a schedule for the upcoming podcasts soon as we have SO many great ideas on what books & films we want to discuss in the future.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am filled with good news today and want to shout it out from the rooftops but alas, I must keep it under wraps for another week or so. (Ooh—how can I keep this to myself? I am dying to talk about it!) Hang on impatient friends and family—there is a new project I am working on with my fellow Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcastand we are both crossing our fingers and sending good Juju out to the world that it will be something that lots of folks will enjoy. Not just our usual yoga, Zumba, spinning, workout and “playout” crew but also those who love entertainment.

Entertainment? What kind of entertainment Margo?

I have already said too much! Wait right here until next my next Vlog post (my 90th!) next week to get all the details. (Dying to say something but must restrain myself…)

In the meantime I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine—Jan from Cranky Fitness. Jan used to be an attorney and family therapist but now makes her bones as a life & wellness coach (as well as an ACE-certified wellness coach) and Blogger whose motto is “Healthy Living is a Pain in the Ass!” (What is not to love about this woman?) Cranky Fitness is an excellent resource on all kinds of health, fitness & nutrition topics including a few of my favorites here:

And now for my “Super Brooklyn Postcard Extravaganza!”

Recently I participated with a group of fellow Bloggers to send postcards to one another as encouragement and to say “hello” to people we don’t get to see in person very often. This idea had me thinking about all of the times when my students and social media followers take the time out of their busy days to tell me that I make them smile. I get so bogged down with all of my projects and responsibilities that it frankly makes me a “cranky” mess at times. (I know—shocking news, right?)

On Sundays I teach three back to back classes (spin/spin/core) and I have to admit there are times when I say to myself “Screw it—it’s Sunday and I am working again? Grrr!” (Especially on a beautiful morning when I would rather be out on my bike—double grr!)

However every week I still keep going and get such a happy buzz from helping folks end their weekend on a healthy note.

Today one of my favorites said to me that she loves my 10:30 am core class so much she schedules the weekend around it. “My kids know not to make plans with me until after 11:30 when you are done.”

This made me so happy that I decided to send my own encouragement out to those in the world who could use it. Are you in the need of a little postcard cheer? It has been quite a hot week in New York and I have been busier than usual in both my work life and “real” life but as always I am happy to do my weekly check-in with all of you.   • She’s Nacho Mama’s Podcast: Power to the Margos! The lovely Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast had me once again as a guest on her show to talk all about Fitbloggin in Savannah and it was a hoot! First of all we were both obsessed with The Pink House and Jim Williams who was the main subject featured in the non-fiction book Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil (Kevin Spacey played him in the utterly forgettable Clint Eastwood film.) The two Margos talk about our daily exploits during the convention, our favorite meals, the hot weather, my messy hair, her ice cream-stained outfit and more in this rollicking hour. Thank you so much Margo for having me on your show!
  • Manhattanhenge: What is Manhattanhenge? Well basically there are only two nights each year where the sun sets along New York City and the sun aligns perfectly between the buildings. My awesome big brother Joe suggested we go together and we started at the Tudor City Bridge overpass on 42nd street which quickly became too crowded so he suggested we watch from the street. At first I played the role of his mother and scolded him for walking into traffic to get a better look. But soon enough we were both standing in the middle of the street getting our shot in. See!

The Super-Duper 2014 Fitbloggin’ Recap!!!

I am finally ready to put some of my thoughts down about the latest Fitbloggin’ convention (my fourth!) that took place in Savannah this year and offer myself advice for the next trip I take to the south. The days went by in a whirlwind and it was a great mix learning new skills and catching up with old friends.

I had a blast but let me make this absolutely clear—I would change some things if there were a chance for a “Savannah Fitbloggin’ Do-Over.”

  • Put “more” not less into the carry-on suitcase. It was so damn hot and humid in Savannah I mistakenly thought I could bring a couple of changes of wardrobe and be fine.  Soon enough, However, I was sweating my butt off and quickly ran out of options to wear to the multiple events held at the Hyatt. (Note to self—maxi dresses are a gift of the modern age.) If I had to do over there would be more options and less worry about saving space in the suitcase for souvenirs.
  • Bring a flatiron! It was over 90 degrees every day and high humidity so of course my hair had a freak-out. Managed to forget to bring a brush as well. (Also, never going to THAT salon on Fifth in Park Slope again for selling me a crap Keratin treatment!)
  • Pack the nice makeup: I brought along the usual “on vacation” drug-store mascara, eyeliner, foundation, etc. and every speck of it melted off my face in no time. Next time I haul my cookies down to Georgia I will remember to being the lotions and potions that work in any weather. (Think Sephora and not CVS beauty supply!)
  • Order some damn fried chicken! I somehow missed the opportunity to eat real southern fried chicken with gravy and biscuits. (Bad Margo! Bad! Bad!)

But other than that my time in Savannah was magical and I including a few of the highlights for y’all right here. (You’re welcome!)

Day 1:

I was happily surprised to find two of my Blogger friends on the same flight as me. Brooklyn Active Mama and Kimberly of Manifest Yourself greeted me at the Jet Blue gate which immediately got me in the mood for fun times and good vibes. Look how gorgeous we are!

I landed in Savannah and checked on Facebook to find out that Thea of It’s Me Vs. Me was looking for a lunchtime pal. I asked if she would be up for a good old-fashioned southern meal at The Olde Pink House and we were off to the races.

Many friends and acquaintances recommended I eat at “The Pink House” and color me grateful for that tip. This will forever be known as the spot where I first tried fried green tomatoes and watermelon gazpacho. Talk about NOM NOM good? Check out the photos to get an idea of how damn delicious it was:

After our meal we were given the opportunity to explore the rest of Pink House (which was originally built as a private residence in 1789) and were completely blown away with both the décor and the history.

After our yummy lunch Thea and I headed over to the Gryphon Tea Room and were both gobsmacked at how lovely & charming the city is. So much so that I grabbed my iPad to take this video (apologies for not filming horizontally) to try and capture its essence—here it is!

 

Then we met up with the group for the prearranged tea time set up by “Losing Weight and Having Fun” Blogger Sarah:

The Gryphon Tea Room was insanely beautiful and I was happy to join in the fun (sipping ice coffee because hot tea makes me gag.)

Whilst there I met up with my gorgeous roommate Christine of Dubya Wife (she brought a fancy hat and everything!)

There were also pastries and yummy treats on display– however one of my lunch pals (who is of the British persuasion) described everything from the tea to the food as “upper crap.”  Can’t argue or agree with their assessment but to each their own, oui?

That day/night I stayed up until 2 am catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. It was fabulous and featured Legos! Yup–I got pretty drunk and stayed up WAY past my usual bed time. (Photographic evidence at the top.)

Day 2:

The next day I took the “Anti-Computer Body Workout” from celebrity trainer Ashley Borden who was kind enough to speak with me after class for my myriad of training questions. (Thank you Ashley!)

One of the best things about the trip was meeting up with fellow EleVen by Venus ambassadors such as Brooke Not on a Diet (love this girl!)

Day 3:

I was terribly nervous that NO ONE would show up for my small group discussion How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships and Sponsorships that took place Saturday morning at the same damn time as 80s Zumba!! (Who scheduled this? Why do you hate me?)

However I was pleased as punch to see I had a full room waiting for my advice. It made feel great and very useful.

During my talk I used Terry Bicycles as an example of a brand I help with their social media. I enticed my group to show up with the promise that one of them would win this package if they stayed the whole time:

Lo and behold “Crabby” at Cranky Fitness was my winner for correctly answering this trivia question: “Name two Brooklyn singing legends who went to the same high school together in the 1960s” (Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, of course!)

She plans to enjoy her new seat rising around Provincetown soon.

Afterwards I was lucky enough to attend Katy Widrick’s How to Make a Media Kit discussion which was so inspiring. Thank you Katy! She even has an example of a press kit created in a Word document! Really!

And just like that I had to run off to the airport and catch my flight back home. It was a fun time and I am pleased to announce here that Fitbloggin 15 will take place this time next year in Denver—whoo hoo!!
