You can see me wearing this EleVen by Venus top at Fitbloggin!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It is less than two weeks away to the annual Fitbloggin convention and I can hardly contain myself—weeee!  I have been in full beauty preparation mode in anticipation for the southern heat & humidity. Hair has been colored and a full keratin treatment was processed this past week. My eyebrows and upper lip are hair-free and I am stocking up on oil-free moisturizers, glopping on sunscreen and am ready to pretend to be scared when we take the Savannah ghost house tour. Bring it on!

I hope to meet as many of you as possible though I want to warn you—I have to leave a bit early (Saturday afternoon) so if you see me—just run over and give me a hug without a second thought.

This week my Blog/Vlog post is super short & sweet in anticipation of Fitbloggin. I will have my usual playlist, reviews and magazine recaps coming up this week as well. So let’s get this week started y’all!

  • Fitbloggin: The annual Fitbloggin takes place this year in Savannah, Georgia from June 26-29th and this year I am leading a discussion—How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships & Sponsorships on Saturday, June 28th from 9:30-10:30 am. I know this might be either a bit too early or a conflicting time with another panel—but if you can make it, I would LOVE to see you there. Pencil it in now!

  • EleVen by Venus: One of the newer brands I am now an ambassador for is EleVen by Venus which is the creation of tennis superstar Venus Williams. I will talk about what it takes to work for a high-profile label and how you can serve the same capacity for your favorite brand. (Plus, I will be wearing some of their fetching gear which you can check out in the picture above!)

  • Terry Bikes Giveaway at Fitbloggin! I will also be talking about how I started working for Terry Bicycles which is one of THE top makers of cycling gear for women. Terry has never had a fitness ambassador before and it  has been such a pleasure for me to raise their awareness throughout the fitness community. Better than that-p-I will be giving away one Butterfly TI Gel Saddle to one lucky participant at the small group discussion. Whether you ride for sport or pleasure this seat will rock your socks off! Check out what it looks like in the video below!

That’s all I have for this week. Next week I plan to have a new giveaway from another sponsor of mine —MaxFlowSports. Be sure to come back soon ya hear?

Until next time…

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

To know me is to be understanding when I endure one of my many computer issues and talk me off the ledge when I feel hopeless. (Oh technology—how hard it stings when you breakdown!) Currently I am working off of three laptops in various stages of usability but fear not—I am still here for you! So let’s get to this week’s Vlog post which features my Coppertone skin care review and more.

  • Shelton Koskie—Web Site Rock Star: One of the many technical failures of the past week that I have been dealing with was my Word Press site not working (And Go Daddy was less than helpful—thanks for taking my money every month you guys!) However I am fortunate to be acquainted with rock star Word Press God Shelton Koskie of Eighty Grit who helped me get my site back up and running. If you ever need website help—be sure to get in touch with Shelton (and tell him Margo gives him major props for problem solving!)
  • Joy Bauer Nourish Snacks: I have a new post to be featured soon on Fit Bottomed Girls talking about Today Show nutrition expert Joy Bauer and her new venture Nourish Snacks. In a nutshell—it is a home delivery service of yummy (and healthy!) snacks that cost just $12.50 per week (including shipping) and is being curated by Joy herself throughout the summer. Here is a look at what these shipments look like (I will let you know when it posts on FBG—we will have a giveaway!)

Enter to Win This DVD!

Enter to Win This DVD!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing? I had one heck of a week—not my favorite one in a while but I am soldiering on. Basically my laptop died last Friday before the holiday weekend and I have had to get my backup laptop up to speed so I can work and Blog. Well wouldn’t you know that this computer cannot connect to my printer for scanning and I need to sort that out ASAP. (Sigh) To know me is to know that I occasionally have mild to severe computer issues and I am less than graceful when dealing with them. If you have any loving, positive vibes you want to send my way—go for it!

Anyhoosers and in the meantime—let’s get to this week’s news, Vlog post and new giveaway—the 10 Minute Solution Butt Lift DVD from Christine Bullock so let’s hit it!

  • Fit Bottomed Girls Workout: I am really pleased to be involved with the fabulous Fit Bottomed Girls and happy to contribute my “move” for their 6 Moves, No Equipment Workout—the bear crawl. Why the bear crawl? Because I love to make my boot camp students do that one the entire length of the indoor basketball court where I teach
  • Comeback Momma’s 5 Favorite Blogs: Super-thrilled to be included in this list of amazing Bloggers from my friend Jenn of Comeback Momma. (Thanks so much Jenn!)
  • Healthline.com Top Weight-Loss Blogs of the Year:  Brooklyn Fit Chick.com made the list for Healthline.com’s list of top weight-loss Bloggers here and I want to thank them for the honor!
  • The Amazing Tidbits of “T”: I simply adore Blogger Tara M. who lives in Halifax (some of my favorite people live there!) with her lovely wife Meegan. Their love story and weight loss journeys have inspired me so much over the years and it really made my day to meet them at Fitbloggin a couple of years ago. Tara prefers to refer to herself as T which she explains beautifully in this post about gender identity and weight gain. Y’all that know me very well know that I am very attached to my Tuxedo cat Tennessee who prefers to be called “T” as well so this post was especially moving to me. I think you will enjoy it as well!
  • Terry Bikes Giveaway at Fitbloggin! Terry Bicycles will be putting together a fun giveaway at this year’s Fitbloggin convention and one lucky person who goes to my small group discussion (“How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships and Sponsorships”) on Saturday, June 28th from 9:30-10:30 am. Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 81: Brooke “Not On a Diet’s” Best Week Ever, Louis CK’s Best Show, a Band Workout and How to Shush Chatty Students 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #81

Brooke Birmingham’s “Best Week Ever,” Louis CK Learns About “Fat Girls,” Suzanne from Workout Nirvana

Plus: How to Shush a Constant Talker in Class

brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Sorry to post this so late but I had a few personal events in my life take over my weekend schedule and I am just getting back into the swing of things here. Anyhoo—today I have a few news items to get through and then a request for advice. So let’s do this thing!

  • Brooke Birmingham: Wow! My Blogger Buddy has had quite the week! Brooke is the creator of Brooke Not On a Diet and if you do not know her story then you need to check out her site right away. In short though—I have to say I was completely (and happily) surprised to see that Shape magazine has offered to do a full story on Brooke in their magazine. This was supposed to be an online only feature but now they will be doing an entire article about what it is like to lose a great deal of weight. If you have not seen her Today show appearance—check it out here! http://www.today.com/video/today/55138807#55138807

  • Louis CK “So Did The Fat Girl”: I am not a habitual viewer of the FX TV show Louis but I might have to check it out more often now I am hearing so much praise for his most recent episode “So Did the Fat Lady”( link) that I am going to check out back episodes. Please do yourself a favor a check out the 7-minute clip which features an amazing performance by actress Sarah Baker (if she doesn’t receive an Emmy nomination for this I will lose all hope in humanity.)

  • Suzanne Digre “Workout Nirvana” Band Workout:  I just adore Suzanne Digre of Workout Nirvava and her outstanding workouts including this You Tube clip where she uses a band from Rubberbanditz for an overall full body workout.

  • How to Shush a Class Talker: My friend Tamara of Fit Knit Chick is a group fitness instructor and personal trainer based in the Vancouver area (you know I have a special love for Canadians, right?) She recently wrote about group fitness etiquette and how to deal with students who do NOT SHUT UP! I have had recent incidents in my own classes and honestly want to get your advice on how I should best handle this. What do you to maintain a quiet class? Please help me shush the constant talkers!

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog (forgive the screen grab!)

That’s all I have this week folks—see you next week with a new giveaway! (I know I said that last week but I mean it. NEXT week the giveaways will come back.)

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Talking About Hedwig, Laurie David, Amy Schumer and Brooke Not On a Diet 0

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #80

Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Laurie David’s Fed Up & The Family Cooks, The Amazing Amy Schumer

Plus: Knowing When to Say “No” to Publicity

NPH

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I had me a fine and dandy week and hope you did too! Just a few items to get through today and then I will let you go (well—I hope you stick around for my Vlog as well!). The giveaways will be back next week for sure. In the meantime here are my weekly news & notes.

  • Hedwig & The Angry Inch:  In case you are aquatinted with the musical Hedwig & The Angry Inch it is a show that in a more quaint time would be described as “gender bending” but with our more updated understanding on human sexuality and gender identity let’s just Hedwig is about a brave & tragic figure who will rock your socks off. I stupidly did not catch it the first time it was introduced way, way off Broadway in the 90s but the John Cameron Mitchell creation was turned into a film he directed in 2001 and where I first fell in love with the music. Right now it is on Broadway and Neil Patrick Harris is amazing in the part. He sings, dances, acts, tell jokes and interacts with the audience with such gusto. If you are planning to come to NYC over the next few months—beg, steal or borrow tickets to see this show. You will thank me later!

  • Laurie David: Recently I was lucky enough to attend a roundtable discussion with activist and filmmaker Laurie David (she helped produce the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth) and I wrote about my experience for this piece for Fit Bottomed Eats. David is turning her lens on the world of processed foods and the 30-year marketing blitz that has assaulted our concept of the family meal with her new documentary Fed Up. In theaters May 9th!

  • The Amazing Amy Schumer: If you are a Howard Stern fan like me (Baba Boowie!) you have heard the comic Amy Schumer on his show riff about dating, sex, her adventures in standup comedy and body issues. She refuses to act, behave or look like anyone else on television so I incorrectly assumed she was immune to insecurity but this speech she gave last week at the Gloria Steinem gala is the sweetest and saddest commentary on how we treat women in our culture and her fight to remain confident. Am I making it sound boring? It’s not–check out the transcript here! (From New York magazine’s Vulture Blog.)

  • Brooke “Not On a Diet” Keeps Her Shirt Off! I really adore Brooke Birmingham who is a fellow blogger and animal lover. She lost over 172 pounds with hard work and a strong dedicated effort. Recently she was asked by a national magazine to be featured online and she quickly accepted. However, they wanted her to send them a picture of herself in something other than a two-piece suit because they supposedly had a rule about that. (Shaking my head.) Read her story here and be sure to share on Facebook! (So proud of you for saying “no” Brooke!)

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog 79: Ladies Home Journal Closes, Boston Marathon “Sneaks,” Fitbloggin 2014, Plus SparkPeople DVD Giveaway! 23

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #79

Ladies Home Journal Closes, Boston Marathon Bib Sneaks, Tips for Your First Barre Class, Fitbloggin’ Sessions

Plus: Spark People DVD Giveaway!!

Enter to win this 2 DVD set from SparkPeople!

Enter to win this 2 DVD set from SparkPeople!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I was out and having me a grand old time last Sunday with my friend’s annual “Mexican Easter” celebration (there was drinking and piñatas involved) so I decided to wait until this week before posting another Vlog/Giveaway. Figured many of you would have spring breaks and whatnot to deal with but here we are and I am back ladies & gentleman!!  So let’s go through my latest news and then get to gettin with a giveaway featuring one of my favorite instructors in the whole world Coach Nicole of SparkPeople who is expecting a baby this July! (Congrats Nicole!)

  • Ladies Home Journal:  Today I was hoping to celebrate being included as an expert for Ladies Home Journal magazine in their May issue (photo below) but instead I must pass along the news that the 130 year-old magazine is folding due to declining ad sales. So sorry to everyone who worked there and hope they all new work very soon. (I have been through a couple of magazine closings and they are brutal!)
  • Ladies Home Journal inside 001

  • Boston Marathon Bib Sneaks UGH! This story makes me blood boil. Apparently people will buy counterfeit race bibs so they can compete in marathons that they did not qualify for which  is crappy enough but these two entitled creeps (Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley and his Blogger Wife Chelsa) decided that even though she did not qualify this year—they would steal someone else’s number in order for the two of them can run the race together. (They missed out finishing together last year due to the bombing.) I can almost think it is romantic and sweet they wanted to be together that day but the fact is—stealing someone else’s number (and it IS stealing) is just plain wrong.

  • Tips for Your First Barre Class: On to a happier topic—here is a little piece I wrote for Fit Bottomed Girls asking the experts on what you need to do before trying out your first barre class. It came out pretty nifty I must say!

  • FitBloggin’ Speaking Date: I am once again attending the FitBloggin conference that takes place June 26-29 this year in Savannah, Georgia! I will also be heading up a small group discussion on how to pitch brands for ambassadorships and sponsorships. So it is 8-9 am on Saturday morning but rumor has it that Terry Bicycles will have a special giveaway to one lucky participant. (Hmmm—wonder what it will be?) So if you are attending FitBloggin please consider getting up early Saturday and hanging out with me. I’m funny, informed and will have a prize!

  • SparkPeople DVD Giveaway: If you want to win TWO workout DVDs to get a head start on summer—check out my giveaway below. There will be one winner of this double DVD set and they will be contacted by Acacia TV directly to get their prize. Acacia is responsible for the DVD mailing and did not pay for this promotion. (Continental United States only, please!)

Fit As a Pro DVD Giveaway (Lauren Sesselmann)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am so happy to check in with all of you but must admit my brain has third degree “Spring Fever” and going outside is my only cure. So today I am keeping everything short & sweet while offer a 2-for DVD giveaway for one of you lucky readers. So let’s get to it!

  • Bullets Over Broadway:  I am a big fan of splashy Broadway shows plus think Bullets Over Broadway is one Woody Allen’s better films from the 90s so I was very eager to check out the musical version his show starring Zach Braff in his Broadway debut. (Never watched Scrubs so I was not too familiar with his work.) I would say that it is a very good (but not great show) with some outstanding performances. I do not predict this one will be around for long which is a shame.

  • Ryka: This week I was invited by Ryka to check out their upcoming sneaker collection for Fall 2014 and was very impressed with their use of memory foam and cushioning in their shoes. Ryka has won tons of awards over the years as a top sneaker brand that exclusively serves women as their customer base. Ryka even gave me a pair of “Devotion” sneakers that I have been wearing non-stop and absolutely LOVE. (Thanks Ryka!)

  • Fit As a Pro DVD Giveaway: Soccer superstar Lauren Sesselmann has her own series of ten-minute workout DVDs that will get you in awesome shape in no time. This week I am giving away two of latest titles 10 Minute Full Body Workouts and (my favorite!) 10 Minute full Body Workouts for Small Spaces (so you can work out just about anywhere, people!) I will have links to clips below plus details on how you can enter to win. (Continental United States only, please!) Fit As a Pro will send the DVDs directly to the one winner selected and did not pay for this post or promotion.

Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:

I am withholding all judgment until I read her first “real issue and will also hold off on any full reviews of SELF until then. (The magazine business is rough, folks!)

  • 20-Minute Indoor Cycling Workout: I am a Sweat Pink ambassador and am lucky enough to write for their Blog www.sweatguru.com This past week  posted my first workout for them– a 20-minute indoor cycling routine. Please let me know what you think of it because I am totally new to writing these things out!

  • Xtend Barre Brooklyn Heights: This past week I was lucky enough to try out my first Xtend barre workout in their new Brooklyn Heights studio. Will give you more details when my article is ready on Fit Bottomed Girls.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 76: Bike Spring Cleaning, SELF & A Warning for Bloggers, Plus Giveaway of Functional Cross Training 19

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #76

Spring Cleaning for Your Bike, SELF magazine’s “Tutu” Kerfuffle and My Brand-New

 Functional Cross-Training Book Giveaway!

Functional Cross Training

Functional Cross Training

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s the day after my birthday when I post this and no I will NOT tell how many spanks I should have received but let’s just say I remember the 80s–mmmkay?

My mood is a little better this week than last which might be because the temperature is above 40 degrees or maybe I was just in a bit of a funk. Let’s just say I am trying to embrace the new season that is finally arriving and ready to kick some ass again. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Today I want to talk about getting your bike ready for the spring, the “inadvertent” mess-up that is the April issue of SELF magazine and my groovy new book giveaway Functional Cross Training (three copies folks—your odds are good to win!)

  • Terry Bikes/Bicycling Magazine: As the fitness ambassador for Terry Bicycles (their first!) I am happy to forward along my latest Blog post for them which talks about Spring Cleaning for Your Bike. Leah Flickinger from Bicycling magazine gave me the tips and I cannot WAIT to get out on the road again. Be sure to follow Leah on Twitter as well as @BicyclingMag.

Also—you can enter to win a $500 Cycling Wardrobe from Terry Bicycles now until April 16th and you need to do is fill out one easy form, so go for it!

  • SELF magazine had the ‘Worst Week Ever!” Oy vey. Where do I even BEGIN here? In case you have not heard about this debacle (all of the best links are here by the way) SELF magazine asked Monika Allen if they could print a photo of her and her friend running in a race wearing tutus as they story was about running with tutus. Monika is a running coach who raises funds for Girls on The Run of San Diego with her own tutu business Glam Runner. Well it turned into a slam piece where SELF essentially mocked Monika and her friend Tara Baize for wearing tutus while running because, um– they think it is a “lame” trend.

The comment was/is juvenile, myopic and out-of-date with what is actually happening in the running world. “How dare you be different from me? We are SERIOUS about running here!”

Here’s the rub—Monika had brain cancer at the time of the run. She was in the middle of chemotherapy treatments and the photo they used of her in the Los Angeles marathon was the first time she felt healthy enough in about a year to run a full marathon. That’s right, she had a tumor in her head and she ran a marathon. Suck on that haters!

Monika asked the editors to explain their actions. After getting no response from them she did the wise thing and went to her local press. Let me tell you—the word “tutu” took off all over the Twitter and Facebook right afterwards.

Long story short (honestly—the link I sent before will give you a fuller picture) SELF’s editor in chief Lucy Danziger did the right thing by offering a heartfelt apology. (Though it is certainly not worse because Monika had cancer. It’s bad all on its own because it was a mean comment—period.)

I have not done a full post on SELF in several months because frankly, there was not enough content that deserved a full review. What I will do with my April 2014 issue is toss it directly into the recycling bin unread. I will feature SELF again when they prove themselves worthy of the trust of all of the women working hard to get healthy.
