Fitness meet and teet brochure 001

Hey All!

Recently I enjoyed a day of fun, fitness, health and good cheer with some of the most amazing people in the Blogosphere with Fitness magazine’s second annual “Blogger Meet & Tweet” which was held this year at the fancy, schmancy Mercedes Club in New York City.

Throughout the morning we were treated to some interesting panel discussions featuring Fitness editors along with celebrity guests for a variety of topics.

Check out the view!

We were treated to a lovelier than expected day where we sat outside and got our collective learning on.
Fitness editor in chief Betty Wong was on hand to greet all Bloggers plus send us off to collect our loot (more on THAT later.)

There was a panel discussion featuring the top Bloggers in health & wellness including:

This panel discussion was moderated by Fitness digital editor Christine Griffin and provided all sorts of inspiration for us would-be money making Bloggers. (Not that I do it for the money…)

In fact, Erin even though Erin I work for the same company (I am a NYC contributor to Fit Bottomed Girls) this was the first we chance we got to give each other a hug. (Hey again Erin!)

Me and Erin Whitehead FBM

I think my favorite segment was when Fitness health editor Lisa Haney talked about women’s health issues with Jennifer Ashton, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. http://www.jenniferashtonmd.com/ who was ready to discuss everything from Angelina Jolie’s decision to get a double mastectomy to the importance of birth control pills. She was so interesting!

Dr Ashton and Me

So, of course, I had to run over and get my picture taken with her. (Just so you know I am 5’ 7”—this woman is a TALL drink of water!)

Also on hand were The Biggest Loser trainer Brett Hoebel who talked about the latest trends in “extreme fitness” and celebrity makeup artist Sarah Lucero who showed us how to stay gorgeous in the upcoming summer, sweaty months.

My favorite part of the day was watching my friend Mariette of Namaste Mari get totally gaga for Rocco DiSpirito. How cute do they look together by the way?

Mariette and Rocco

The “Meet & Tweet” was the perfect chance to catch up with friends like Jess,  Erica Sara, Patty Aziaga and my home girl Toni of Running Living Loving (below) as we are all too busy running around and never have time to catch up in person.

(Two Long Island chicks just hanging out, know what I mean?)

Toni and Me

So did I mention the goodie bag?

Well here is what it looked like coming home:

Goodie Bag

And this is how it looks when I tried to go through it:

Among the items I received that day:

Whew! It was quite a day and I can NOT wait until next year so I can see what Fitness has in mind for us humble Bloggers.

And remember, you can be sure to check out Fitness magazine at www.fitnessmagazine.com

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vintage Post: “Why I Always Wear a Helmet” #nationalrideyourbiketoworkweek 2

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vintage Post:

“Why I Wear a Helmet” (2010)

Hi Gang!

Having just found out that this is National Ride Your Bike to Work Week—I wanted to repost something I wrote three years ago and is a subject close to my heart—the reason I always wear a bike helmet.

Thanks for letting me take this trip down amnesia rode once again!

First—here is a picture of my bike along with the two (count ‘em two) bike helemets I own. Never do I leave the apartment for a ride without putting one of them on. Never!

My two bike helmets plus a partial view of my Pee Wee Herman doll!

My two bike helmets plus a partial view of my Pee Wee Herman doll!

Growing up, my generation did not bother with helmets, elbow and/or knee pads or enforced adult supervision. We were the latch-key, forgotten generation who boldly (and often stupidly) embraced dangerous activities without a second thought.

Anyhoo, way back when I was the rare tenth-grader who craved responsibility & structure and actively looked for an afterschool job but was too young to legally be hired anywhere. So I took my sincerity and youthful optimism and volunteered as a “Candy Striper” at the Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital in Malvern, PA. (Shout out!)

For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about—Candy Stripers were young gals who were basically interns for hospitals and available to help out the hospital staff by handing out magazines, taking patients on their daily walk, playing cards, and pretty much do whatever the nurses ordered–  ahem, I mean asked us to do.

If you are wondering why they were called Candy Stripers, it was because our bitchin’ uniforms that resembled a candy cane (from Getty Images)

A really sexy look I have to say...

A really sexy look I have to say…

Ugh, the memories are coming back now. This is probably the least flattering uniform for any profession. (Shudders)

Back to my story, my wing held the head-trauma patients and my job (which I took very seriously) was to hang out with them in between their doctor’s appointments and rehabilitation sessions. That could mean playing board games, watching TV, walking around the hospital grounds or as with my favorite patient–listen to records. (Records—yes, CDs were on the market but the hospital could not afford a “boom box” to play them.)

The patient whom I remember most clearly (and therefore was my favorite) was named Alice and she was 17-years old, had a boyfriend and a driver’s license which automatically made her seem cool as shit to 15 year-old me. Alice was very a beautiful girl and her parents described her as a “handful” on the count of her habit of sneaking out of the house to take midnight rides with her boyfriend who owned a motorcycle. (The coolness just kept piling on!)

Why was Alice a patient in the head trauma unit? From what I was told, one day while going on an actual parent-approved date, Alice’s boyfriend hit a wet patch of leaves which caused his cycle to slide under a car (he was uninjured) while she was flown (head-first) right into the sidewalk. Without a helmet. In essence, Alice woke up one day as a “normal” high school senior and by that afternoon was left with the intellectual ability of a nine-year old.

A nine-year old with fits of temper and terrible headaches. Her short-term memory was practically nil; in fact I had to continually introduce myself to her for months. Alice’s muscle coordination was compromised to the point where at the end of the day she would develop a noticeable limp and her right shoulder would stoop down into her chest.

Alice loved to listen to music and thought I was the coolest person ever because I was always bringing “new” records during my shift. Actually I only owned three but she could never remember what I brought the week before so as far she was concerned, I was a musical Santa Claus!

After several months of weekly visits, Alice was finally getting to the point where she would remember me, my name and the day I was due to be there. She would jump around and grab my arm excitedly when we would have the rec room to ourselves for “record time!”

Hands down her favorite was “Journey’s Greatest Hits” and her favorite song was their ballad Who’s Cryin’ Now. As soon as the last guitar note would fade away she would shuffle over, pick up the needle and play it again. And each time her eyes would be closed as she listened very carefully to the beginning notes of the piano.

This happened so often the doctors, nurses, janitors and patients would take turns pleading with me and Alice to “please, please play another song!” To this day, I have a clear image of a young girl desperately trying to remember the lyrics and clapping clumsily off beat to the magic that was 80’s Journey.

Almost six months to the day she was admitted to the center Alice had a seizure and was transferred to another facility. I was desperate to find out her condition but no one could offer a conclusive prognosis.

This completely threw me off because up until that time I thought doctors and hospitals had the answers for every ailment and injury imaginable. When I questioned her physician about her chances of ever getting better he shrugged his shoulders and said “Who knows? It’s a head injury.”

As he walked past me he added “You never want two things kiddo: you never want to be burned and you never want a head injury. All bets are off with either one.” Never forgot that.

Please promise me you will always wear your helmet as well.

Today, as I am typing this post, it is Mother’s Day so first want to wish all of you Moms out there a “Happy Day” and thank you for your service to mankind. I am a mother of two furry babies and could not imagine all of the work involved in raising a real-live human being so kudos to all of you who date to try. (Except for that mother in Park Slope who asked me to explain to her 4 year-old son he was not allowed to join in the adult fitness classes because “he doesn’t really listen to me.”) You Madam, needn’t have bothered.

Today I am aiming for a super, quick Vlog cast and announcing my latest giveaway. So let’s get to gettin’, shall we?

  • The most important book to come out in the last week or so is the third from my very best friend Deborah Rae Cota The Traveler (available in paperback and on Kindle & Nook!)  Deborah and I have been friends for over 20 years and she loves to write about fantastical beings with incredible powers and her story telling is top notch. What Did We Learn This Month? @SELFmagazine With Kelly Osbourne on the Cover! #fitblog 9

What Did We Learn This Month?

 SELF: May 2013

SELF Cover Star: Kelly Osbourne

I think Kelly looks fantastic and am very happy that she is seeking to be a healthy role model to young girls rather than being just another skinny famous person. But I don’t know—there is something a little strange to me that as a teen she felt harassed by the media for talking how her looks and then she gets a talk show where she makes fun of people for the way they dress. (E’s Fashion Police)

Anyone else feel this way?

Or am I over analyzing this one? (It wouldn’t be the first time!)

Really love Kelly’s bathing suit on the cover by the way. (OMG it is from Betsey Johnson—no wonder I love it so much!)

So What Else is in the May SELF?

“Drop 10 Workout”

Trainers Karena Dawn and Katrina Hodgson of Tone it Up are back at it with a whole new workout this month that you can tear out and take to the gym.

Drop 10 001

“Dying to Try it—Pull-Ups”

Trainer Kiley Schoenfelder (http://kfitnyc.com/) shows women how to do a real pull-up. (It’s not that scary, people!)

By the way, Kiley is a Type 1 Diabetes athlete! How incredible is that? Go Kiley! (SELF editors—you must do a story about her!)

Pull Ups 001

“5 Minute Abs”

SELF asked exercise physiologist Michelle Olson her favorite quick abs moves. They ask and ye shall receive.

“How Did I Ever Bike Without This?”

SELF knows how to make this Fit Chick happy—put in some bike gear! (So who is going to get me the Stella Mccartney-designed Adidas jacket?)

“SELF: 2013 Healthy Beauty Awards”

I love beauty stories and here we get the best of the best in lotions and potions as decided by SELF readers.

Healthy Beauty Awards 001

The Rest of the Best of the March SELF:

  • “How Bad Is It to Have a Drink Before You Work Out?” I was ready to make fun of this article when two (count ‘em two) of my friends told me they have worked out “tipsy” before. So apparently this is a real thing that happens. (Gawd—I am so out of it!)
  • “Why Didn’t I Step In?” Here we get a very interesting and thought-provoking essay from Sushma Subramanian whose friend died of liver failure at 26. Holy sh*t!!

Overall Grade:

B+ It was a great issue but I wish they not make the copy so young sounding. It comes off a little teenager-ish at times.

Have you read the June SELF yet? What do you think of Kelly Osbourne? One a scale of 1-10, how cute  is her bathing suit?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 35 with The Super Duper Mika Brzezinski Book Giveaway “Obsessed” 9

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Spring has sprung in New York and the world is looking so bright and lovely right now—I just want to tear through Prospect Park on my bike and yell “Look everyone! I can see the sun!” at the top of my lungs.

But before I can do that—I must get to today’s Vlog post. (My 35th—can you believe that?!) So in the words of Marty DeBergi (Rob Reiner) of This is Spinal Tap “enough of my yakkin’—let’s boogie!”

Featured on my Vlog this week:

  • I talk about the difficulty of setting boundaries as an instructor.
  • My giveaway of Mika Brzezinski’s book “OBSESSED: America’s Food Addiction–And My Own” which a fast, interesting read. On TV she is cool and always in control co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe but in real life it turns out Mika has spent most of her life “obsessed” with food and exercise. She would put herself on a strict diet and exercise plan (even lecturing friends and family on what they should and shouldn’t eat) and then in private consume large quantities of food (like an entire box of Cap’n Crunch) in a quick amount of time.
  • If you want to read an in-depth “behind the scenes” view of the book—check out this excellent feature of Mika and collaborator Diane Smith (a fellow journalist who has also struggled with food issues) in this interview from More magazine.

Now let’s check out today’s Vlog post! (Please ignore the screen grab. My eyes are not behaving today.)

Here is the official information about Mika’s Book:

Obsessed
America’s Food Addiction–and My Own
By Mika Brzezinski
Published by Weinstein Books

The New York Times bestselling author and co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe shares the story of her own struggle with food, hoping to inspire us all to begin the journey toward healthy eating.

Mika Brzezinski is at war against obesity. On Morning Joe, she is often so adamant about improving America’s eating habits that some people have dubbed her “the food Nazi.” What they don’t know is that Mika wages a personal fight against unhealthy eating habits every day, and in this book, she describes her history of food obsession and distorted body image, and her lifelong struggle to be thin. She believes it’s time we all learned to stop blaming ourselves, and each other, and look at the real culprits — the food we eat and our addiction to it.

Mika feels the only way to do this is to break through the walls of silence and shame we’ve built around obesity and food obsessions. She believes we need to talk openly about how our country became overweight, and what we can do to turn the corner and step firmly onto the path of health.

So Mika made a deal with her very close friend Diane: they would work together on this book and on their personal goals, to help Diane drop 75 pounds and to break Mika’s obsession with staying superthin. As she did in her bestseller Knowing Your Value, Mika has packed each chapter with insights from notable people in medicine, health, business, the arts, and politics. Singer Jennifer Hudson, the late writer and director Nora Ephron, TV host Gayle King, New Jersey governor Chris Christie, and many others open up to Mika about their own challenges and what works for them when it comes to food and diet. It’s time we stopped whispering the F-word (“fat”) the way we used to shun the C-word (“cancer”). This book — with its trademark Brzezinski smarts, honesty, and courage — launches us into a no-holds-barred conversation with family and friends, in schools and kitchens, in Congress and the food industry, to help us all find ways to tackle one of the biggest problems standing between us and a healthier America.
