Brooklyn Fit Chick Review: @NASM “Weight Loss Specialist” Certification 19

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK REVIEW!!

THE NASM WEIGHT LOSS SPECIALIST PROGRAM

 NASM LOGO

 Hi Gang!

Two years ago I passed the NASM Personal Training Certification (National Academy of Sports Medicine) which is one of the biggest personal achievements of my life. Trust me—this is NOT hyperbole. I studied for weeks for that notoriously difficult exam and it is a source of pride for me to say “NASM? Oh yeah—I passed it on my first attempt.” Yay me!

Getting certified was tough enough but staying certified is an almost bigger challenge as it requires I take a certain number of continuing education courses in order to stay current which is, quite frankly, a huge pain in my butt schedule-wise. NASM offers several day-long workshops throughout the year to earn much-needed points but they are mostly held on weekends and generally running from 8 am to 4 pm ALL DAY. The whole day. My poor old brain can’t handle any learning past a couple of hours at a time these days so I find these day-long seminars very trying. Plus they occur on the days I teach and earn most of my money. So what’s a girl to do?

Luckily I was contacted by NASM to try out their new online Weight Loss Specialist course to help me earn 1.9 (out of 2) points—score! (Note—they did pay for my course but the opinions are my own.)

Here is some of the information about the Weight Loss Specialist course that is not based on opinion but rather from their press release:

“The Weight Loss Specialist (WLS) program is a 15-hour, online course earning the fitness professional 1.9 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon completion of the exam. Never before have so many weight-loss resources been available in one concentrated credential, providing health and fitness professionals applicable programs that turn into life-changing results for their clients.

At the core of the new Weight Loss Specialist course is an advanced curriculum backed by years of research and proven scientific analysis. A few key areas of study include:

  • The psychology and physiology of weight management
  • How to avoid weight-loss plateaus
  • Dispelling well-known weight-loss myths
  • Methods for lifetime weight-loss success

We are cutting through the diet and weight-loss noise, providing Certified Personal Trainers and top-level fitness professionals with a new approach to weight loss. The Weight Loss Specialist is a revolutionary course that combines proven methodologies and techniques with ways to incorporate our proprietary Optimum Performance Training™ (OPT™) model for continued career success,” said President of the National Academy of Sports Medicine Andrew Wyant.”

Once you register online to take the course you will see that there are 12 “modules” for each section which includes downloadable (and printable) information. This is what they look like altogether:

Nasom stack

Plus each module has a video to watch and explain its subject.

NASM Screen

Are you curious? Well then, here are some of my takeaways after participating in this program…

Pros and cons of NASM Weight Loss Specialist Certification:

Pros:

  • The test can be done completely online and on your own time. This is a 15-hour (!) exam with TONS of material to get through so I found it very convenient to go through it in two-three hour chunks at a time.
  • The material is top notch. NASM prides itself on being a science-based organization and they make sure to differentiate what is provable in terms of weight loss theories and what is merely speculation.
  • You have three chances to pass their online exam (100 questions in 90 minutes!) which means if test taking makes you anxious (as it does in my case) you have a few chances to get it right.
  • The videos for all of the chapters in the course explain each topic clearly and concisely.
  • Working online means working at home for me so I don’t have to travel to a location to take a seminar which would add to an already long day.

Cons:

  • 15 Hours is still 15 hours and it took me a few weeks to get through all of the material.
  • Some of the subjects were hard for me to grasp right away and I would have appreciated an in-person instructor to guide me on them.
  • The total cost is $499 which is prohibitive for some budgets though you can pay in installments and the certification is good for a lifetime.

Anyhoo—I was very happy with my only NASM experience and recommend to anyone who has issues with getting to continuing education classes and seminars.

Have you done any online courses? What has been your experience with them?

Talk soon!

WeeknightGluten_CVR_FINAL

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So is it spring yet? I don’t mean to sound like a cry baby but I am getting pretty damn sick and tired of this cold weather. Can we please get some warm rays on the East Coast? Honestly, I have been wearing the same damn parka every day since Thanksgiving and cannot take it anymore! Okay—done complaining.

Now—on to my Vlog post this week. Just a word of warning–I start with kind of a bummer message but it gets much better as I get into it. You will see for yourself..

Featured on my Vlog this week:

  • I (finally) took the NASM Weight Loss Specialist exam and will give you a preview of my review of the program (is that a decent sentence or should I have started over?)
  • My friend Claudette’s new company Cavegirl Confections which features the yummiest gluten-free Paleo treats on the market. In particular I recommend the Cherry Pie Bites, the chocolate hazelnut granola, and the yummiest almond butter I have ever eaten in my life (which is truly saying something.) Claudette is a pastry trained chef who makes every order by hand and all of her products are gluten-free, grain-free and dairy-free. You can read more about her brand on my friend Shanna’s Blog Pineapple and Coconut.
  • My Kristine Kidd cookbook giveaway Weeknight Gluten Free and Weeknight Fresh & Fast which is a part of her partnership with Williams Sonoma. Kidd was the food editor for Bon Appétit magazine for over 20 years and she certainly knows a thing or two about creating delicious recipes. You can follow her Blog here.

Now let’s check out today’s Vlog post!

Here is more information the Kristine Kidd cookbooks:

Williams-Sonoma

WEEKNIGHT FRESH & FAST

Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week

By Kristine Kidd

If you’re as busy as author Kristine Kidd, the daily “What’s for dinner tonight?” question can be daunting.  In Weeknight Fresh & Fast, the former Bon Appétit editor’s latest book, Kidd shows readers how effortless it is to make flavorful and nutritious meals from scratch – even with a busy schedule.  Weeknight Fresh & Fast features more than 100 delicious and beautifully photographed dinner ideas, inspired and organized by seasonal offerings.

Using fresh produce as the foundation, Kidd transforms just picked ingredients into delicious dishes:  A lemony sauté of chicken cutlets, asparagus, and sugar snaps is perfect in the springtime; quickly grilled lamb chops with chunky peach salsa make the most of summer’s abundance; a comforting risotto with earthy vegetables and creamy blue cheese is a creative way to highlight fall’s bounty; juicy roasted salmon topped with tangy grapefruit and avocado relish makes the most of winter’s citrus.

Chapters open with advice about the fresh ingredients and cooking methods best suited to the time of year.  Also included are ideas for quick vegetable sides and fruit desserts, as well as advice on stocking the pantry.  Clever tips throughout Weeknight Fresh & Fast offer enticing ways to round out meals, customize recipes to personal tastes, menu-planning strategies, and helpful ideas for turning leftovers into new suppers later in the week.

Weeknight Fresh & Fast illustrates that there is enough time in the day to prepare food that is healthy, does not take a lot of time, nor require a lot of preparation or clean-up.  It offers far better choices than eating takeout or hitting the drive-thru and helps readers put a delicious, wholesome meal on the table night after night.  With this solution-packed title on the book shelf, busy people will have a reliable road map for eating well every night, no matter what the day brings.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: As the food editor of Bon Appétit magazine for more than 20 years, Kristine Kidd was responsible for filling its pages with delicious recipes and keeping her devoted readership up to date with evolving food trends.  Based in Los Angeles, Kidd has written five cookbooks and is regularly sought out as an expert on home cooking.

And:

Williams-Sonoma Weeknight Gluten Free

Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week

By Kristine Kidd

Latest surveys show that one third of adults are interested in avoiding or cutting back on gluten in their diets. Major publications such as The New York Times and The Huffington Post are responding with articles and recipes aimed at embracing the gluten-free lifestyle. Even superstar chefs like Thomas Keller are customizing their menus with a nod towards the benefits of cooking without gluten. Leading the trend, bestselling food writer and editor Kristine Kidd and Williams-Sonoma have teamed up to bring you gluten-free recipes that add to your health without sacrificing the flavors you love.

Emphasizing quick, flavor-packed meals, Kristine transforms easy-to-find fresh ingredients into dishes like grilled wild salmon fillets atop satisfying chickpeas enhanced with Moroccan spices; seared steak and peppers simmered in a creamy sauce and then folded into warm corn tortillas for family-friendly tacos; seared scallops and orange-avocado salsa spooned over herbed quinoa; elbow pasta baked with cheese, chard, and crisp breadcrumbs for a tempting take on macaroni and cheese—that no one will guess is gluten free.

Like other special diets, gluten-free cooking is for people making healthy choices about what they want to eat. However, it does take some planning and education to pull off a gluten-free menu that doesn’t feel like it’s “missing something.” Weeknight Gluten Free solves these common issues for the frustrated home cook, taking the guesswork out of cooking gluten-free food that retains all of its original character.

Don’t miss this sequel to bestselling companion Weeknight Fresh & Fast, and get Weeknight Gluten Free for a straightforward approach to gluten-free cooking that you’ve been waiting for.

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

“Fresh Starts”

IFBB Bikini star Jessica Paxson talks to Oxygen about her struggle with depression over the last few years and how she found her way to the happy space she is now. (The 30 year-old is engaged to fellow health advocate Blair Mone who looks as if he can crush a Buick with his biceps!)

Jessica counts on her faith in God to keeping her spirits up and keeping her fridge full of clean foods to stay in such great competitive shape.

One regret she does have is not eating enough and over exercising as a teen cared in order to be “as skinny as possible.” Jessica now appreciates a lean and muscular form and most of all—works at being healthy!

Cover Girl 001
“Get Strong, Lean & Mean”

This is a home “Plyo” workout that was created by J&M strength coach Molly Galbraith and looks like a real butt kicker!

Get Strong 001

“Freshen Up!”

Spring might finally be arriving which is a perfect time to consider planting your own kitchen herb garden. Oxygen offers green thumb-type advice plus yummy recipe ideas for oregano, tarragon, basil and dill.

Freshen Up 001

“Slip On Your Short Shorts”

If you are looking to up your leg workouts here are some fanatic ideas to get your gams “shorts-ready.”

Short Shorts 001

“Perfection—So Boring!”

A new essay from my hero Tosca Reno on the joys of owning your own quirks and getting rid of those “I have to perfect” pictures from your head. (I really need to heed her advice!)

Tosca Reno 001

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Play, Explore, Connect!” As soon as the warmer weather arrives (it is coming, right?) I am going to take their advice here and run outside with the joy of a child.
  • “Healthy Back Tighter Tummy” Learning to properly exercise your core (back & abs) can help with preventing injury and pain there later on. So try out some of these moves to work your middle area plus, advice on moves to avoid.
  • “Tighten Up Anywhere” Rita Catolino (Tosca Reno’s trainer) shows some moves you can do at your local park/playground to get into shape.
  • “Is Your Kitchen Safe” Oxygen offers advice on how to keep your kitchen (and everything in it clean & safe.

Overall Grade:

A- Lots of inspiring ideas here for spring and I love how they use strong women with muscles as models in every issue. (Thank you Oxygen!)

 Shape: April 2013

Shape Cover Star for March:

I don’t think I am ready for this jelly—cuz Beyoncé is on the cover of the April Shape—whoo hoo!

First of all, I am shocked to learn she is only 31 years-old. (What I mean by that is doesn’t it feel as if she has been around for ages?)

The long-legged diva talks to Shape about how she got back her killer curves after gaining 57 pounds during her pregnancy (whoa!) plus her intent on showing her daughter the importance of following your own passions and “do things that challenge” you to face your fears.

Here is a photo of the mighty one being fierce in heels.

Beyonce 001

So what else is inside the March Shape?

“Workout of the Month”

I have a strong, passionate love/hate relationship with my foam roller so this feature on how to use them to both strengthen and lengthen my muscles was very useful. (Ouch!!) Trainer Ashley Borden designed the routine.

“Swing Into Action”

I worked for a golf publication for a while and know how the swing can really work (or hurt) your back depending on how you do it. (I just wish golf clothes were sexier…)

“2013 Shape Shoe Awards”

The editors of Shape put over 50 pairs of sneakers through their paces and picked their 14 best bets.

“Ready, Set, Burn!”

L.A.-based trainer Mike Donavanik (who created the DVD Extreme Burn: Ripped) offered us this workout that can help you burn 2000 calories per week.

Ready Set and Burn 001

“The Skinny on…Milk”

Just switched to Trader Joe’s coconut milk in my coffee and now I completely forget what it was like to have real cream with each sip. (Oh, who am I kidding? I will forever miss cream in my coffee but dairy is no longer my friend.)

Anyhoo—this helpful feature shows the pros & cons of all different kinds of milk type things.

Milk 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Chocolate Tonight!” Shape has a bunch of yummy-looking recipes here that feature the key ingredient of chocolate. Yes, please!
  • “Bag, You’re It!” I am so sick of my winter things including my big, black handbag so this story makes me all kinds of happy. (They show the best in Spring purses in all sorts of glorious colors.)
  • “Give Your Kitchen a Checkup” I have moving on my mind and the kitchen photographed on page 128 is my idea of paradise.
  • “Breathe Easy” Allergies are my sworn enemy so I read any and all articles about how to fight them.

Follow Shape magazine online at: www.Shape.com

Overall Grade:

A  Have to say I really loved this issue. Shape has been on a roll lately!

Have you read the April Shape yet? What was your favorite article? Let me know!

(This DVD Rules!)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Thank you all so much for my birthday wishes from last week—it made me feel very special! My big brother came out spend the day with me and I have been basically eating out every meal since this past Friday so I will be on strict “Paleo” mode this week to get back into fighting shape. Anyhoo—I have a real shirt & sweet Vlog today talking about the cool documentary I saw on my birthday plus my next giveaway which just happen to be a workout DVD from the “Ballet Body” series. (In fact, two giveaways but you need to see the video to know what I am talking about!) So enough of my yapping and let’s get to it, shall we?

Featured on my Vlog this week:

  • On my birthday I decided to see a movie about a movie–Room 237 which is a documentary about The Shining. You may not know this about me but I am a huge Stephen King fan and love both the film and the novel it is based upon very much. But I had NO idea how much other people thought about this movie or what different things in it symbolize—you have to see it to believe it for yourself! I give it a “thumbs up” and say that you should rent on In Demand right away.
  • My next reviews (too many magazines are in my life people!) including SELF, Health, Women’s Health, Shape, Men’s Health, Oxygen, Men’s Fitness and on and on and on…
  •  My Ballet Body workout DVD giveaway featuring the amazing Leah Sarago.

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Jillian Michaels

Oh boy—my love for Jillian grows by leaps and bounds with every interview. In this one for Fitness she admits that while she loves her kids to death—they also drive her crazy sometimes.  She also admits she now checks her e-mails while on the StiarMaster instead of giving 100% to all of her workouts (a big “no-no” before for the strict trainer.)

Jillian also gives us a look at her exclusive “Bodyshred” workout that is taught at Crunch gyms all over the U.S.

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S WORKOUT PLAYLIST

“Trojans” Playlist 50-Minute Ride

(This is for my friend Jennifer Meyer)

(This is for my friend Jennifer Meyer)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am trying to get better about putting up my playlists as people seem to enjoy them so let us not dilly dally—okay? Today’s ride features a few of my current favorite songs plus a 7- minute climb using an eerie Dave Matthews number from the 90s.

Do I have you intrigued? Then let’s get to it!

  • Trojans: Atlas Genius

I know absolutely nothing about this band but this song caught my attention right away and I knew I could start a ride with it.

  • Desire: U2

Desire is the prefect “second” song but it begins with a crashing guitar sound and delivers the perfect, driving beat for 3 minutes.

  • Youth Without Youth: Metric

Metric came to NYC last year and I could not get tickets—grrrrr!

  • Keep the Car Running: Arcade Fire

This might be my favorite song by them but all of their music is pretty great.

  • Thrift Shop: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

The version full of cursing makes my heart soar. Most favorite new song on the list by far!

  • Elephant: Tame Impala

I like doing out of the saddle climbing with this weird little ditty.

  • Gold Digger: Kanye West

Please get the clean version if you play it in class! It is still plenty filthy, don’t worry!

  • Troublemaker: Weezer

I think the Red album is my favorite from them.

  • The Pretender: Foo Fighters

The Foos are the best with making super-fast songs that make everyone work their asses off with sprinting.

  • Crabbuckit: K-OS

Please come back to NYC K-OS!!

  • I’m Shakin: Jack White

I am starting to become sexually attracted to Jack White. What does that say about me?

  • Don’t Drink the Water: Dave Matthews Band

This song is perfect for a long, slow climb and has kind of a spooky sound.

  • Call Me Maybe: Carly Rae Jepsen

It only took me about 10 months but I think I get why this tune is so popular. Yay me!

  • Madness: Muse

Everyone tells me that Muse is the ultimate live band. What do you think?

So what do you think of my list? Remember to send me your favorite tunes in the comments below.

Until next time…

Here is more information about KIND snacks (from their web site):

The KIND Brand™ philosophy

In 2003, after many years of working on this passion, the team launched KIND, based on two principles: a) the power of AND, and b) holistic kindness.

The Power of AND:

We pride ourselves on creating new paths that avoid false compromises. Instead of “Or” we Say “And.” We choose healthy and tasty, convenient and wholesome, economically sustainable and socially impactful. KIND Fruit and Nut bars achieve this by ensuring that we don’t sacrifice taste to achieve health, or wholesomeness to achieve portability.

Holistic Kindness:

For us “being KIND,” means to “Be KIND to your body, your taste buds, and the world.”® KIND to Your Body and to your taste buds is manifested through the use of all natural wholesome ingredients you can see and pronounce® like whole nuts and real fruit. The KIND social mission is embodied in the KIND Movement, which inspires unexpected KINDINGS – ie, unexpected acts of kindness. Here too, the act of KINDING someone else makes both the recipient of the kindness, and the person doing the KINDING, just a little happier.

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S WORKOUT PLAYLIST

“Girlfriend” Playlist (The Four-Hills Ride)

My favorite hill/climb in Prospect Park

My favorite hill/climb in Prospect Park

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am so behind on posting these damn playlists-sorry gang. I am going to try harder. Promise!

Anyhoo—today we have a 50-minute ride with 4 medium-sized hills. Instead of my yapping about where I got the inspiration –why don’t we just get to getting’ instead, shall we?

  • Girlfriend: Matthew Sweet

I love, love, love this damn song so much and it always puts me in a great mood. Makes for the perfect warm-up tune I say.

  • Use It: The New Pornographers

A fun little ditty from a Canadian band I really enjoy.

  • What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger): Kelly Clarkson

I am not the biggest pop music fan but dammit if this song doesn’t make me want to sing along at the top of my lungs!

  • I Will Wait: Mumford & Sons

Some people are really sick of this band but I think I am finally coming around to them. Go figure!

  • Apparitions: Matthew Good Band

The first climb in this ride and has a nice slow, steady pace.

  • Americano: Lady Gaga

Now for a slight change in mood…(man is she ever skinny in this video!)

  • Doin’ Time: Sublime

The second climb and it has wee bit of ska punk feel to it.

  • 1979: Smashing Pumpkins

Another tune from the 90s I just love and always makes me long for a long, meaningless drive in my old car.

  • Clint Eastwood: Gorillaz

I am not sure if I love the song because of the video. It’s pretty cool, right?

  • Wait a Minute: The Pussycat Dolls

I heard this at the ECA NY convention and for some reason had to buy it off Shazam right away. It’s just too damn catchy!

  • My Hero: Foo Fighters

Apparently Dave Grohl wrote this in honor of Kurt Cobain.

  • Crank it Up: David Guetta & Akon

I liked to do “heavy sprints” to this song.

  • Pets: Porno for Pyros

I love anything to do with Perry Farrell, but this live performance is not my favorite thing in the world. (Sorry but I could not find the original video!) Guessing he just MIGHT be on something funny here but do not quote me on that.

So what do you think of my list? Remember to send me your favorite tunes in the comments below.

Until next time…

Ox Ox,
