Shape Cover Star for June 2015:

Jessica Alba is on the cover and is basically taking over the world with her eco-friendly products company “Honest” that is worth an estimated $1 billion! Jessica began her company (funded partly by her earnings as a top movie star) just three years ago and thinks a billion seems kind of puny compared to what she feels is truly possible in the marketplace.

If you are wondering how she stays in such amazing shape even though she admits to hating exercise—try 105 degree yoga sessions with light weights.

(Must try that workout soon!)

What else is in this issue of Shape?

Surfer Workout

A few weeks ago I took a ride out the Rockaways and spent some time admiring the surfers take on the Atlantic Ocean. If you have ever tried to surf you know it is an activity that will challenge your balance and core strength.

Trainer Adam Rosante offers this workout to help you get ready to “hang 10” or whatever it is those crazy surfing people do on those boards!

What is Happening with Fitness magazine?

I am not sure if you all have heard but Meredith Publishing bought Shape magazine so Fitness starting in May will be digital-only. That means this will be the next-to-the last issue of Fitness reviewed on this Blog. This is a sad day but let’s be grateful that we will still get new content from the editors in the future—it will just be online.

Anyhoo—let’s talk about the March issue which is on newsstands now!

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

“Chisel and Zizzle”

I am dying to learn how to use ropes in my classes so I loved this express workout from Gold’s Gym trainer Adam Friedman that give six moves using ropes.

Express Workout 001

“Hot Stuff: The Goods We’re Obsessing Over Now”

Fitness has a whole page here filled with cute gear that gets me excited for Spring. The Cole Haan slippers are especially divine!

“Go Vertical”

If you are looking to kick up your workout—try taking the stairs. Here we get two options (staircase vs. stairclimber) to get in a quick workout that gives fast results from Chris Powell.

Vertical Climb 001

“In the Hot Seat”

Four years ago I attempted a big change in my life by working at a standing desk (plus my wobble board to work on my core!) Sitting for hours a day is KILLING us and we need to act now in order to prepare office workers in the future.

Check out some of these options to make your office healthier!

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Fake Wide Awake” I love lotions and potions and lately my skin has been looking dull so I liked this feature offering ideas to brighten my face.
  • “Get a Fierce Physique” Trainer and author Adam Rosante offers an excellent workout here that you can do very quickly and see results in no time.

Overall Grade:

B+ Some really great workouts are featured here (just wish they had more features!)

Women’s Health Cover Star for December 2014:

Are you a fan of The Walking Dead? Well then you are in luck because star Lauren Cohan is on the cover of this issue and talks about life in the Chattahoochee Hills, Georgia where the show is filmed. Lauren is a gal who was born in New Jersey and grew up in London so she was raised to be adaptable.

She doesn’t give away any secrets about the show but admits playing a badass has put her in the best shape of her life. When filming most meals consists of fish and vegetables and she is putting together her first healthy living cookbook. Can’t wait to give away that one on my Blog when it is published… (Big hint to Lauren’s PR team!)

So what else is in the December issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Roll With It”

There are few things I love more than my foam roller—really! You have tight muscles, back pain or knee pain? Just roll it away and Lauren Roxburgh (a wellness coach and fascia/alignment expert) who created a safe & effective workout using one of them at home.

The Only Thing I Want for Christmas

This is not a joke—all I want for Christmas is this Drybar Big Hair Don’t Care Holiday Kit that is featured in the magazine’s gift guide. Any takers?

“The Circle of Life”

LOVE this page which shows the proper length of time you should own certain gym items. (Looks like I need to switch out some sports bras…)

 Shape

December 2014

Shape Cover Star for December 2014:

Julianne Hough (Dancing With the Stars) is a busy gal who tours with her equally famous brother Derek, and is creating a show with him called Blackpool which will be a ballroom dancing drama. In addition to her dancing & singing career Julianne acted in the Footloose reboot and (my personal favorite) the “so bad it is good” Safe Haven. (Get it on Netflix if you ever have the chance. She is fine in the part but the script is amazingly cheesy and awesome!)

The multi-hyphentate is also a workout fiend who keeps in top shape by getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night, eating healthy and dancing as often as she can (even on top of her two-hour shows!)

When home in Los Angeles she prefers works with professional trainer Astrid McGuire and you check out some of their workout in the pages of the December issue.

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“Long and Lean”

Sadie Lincoln is the founder of barre3 studio (there are over 70 locations!) and she offers to Shape a few exercises she prefers to keep her muscles “long and lean.”

Shape Gift Guide:Tone Up Fast”

I literally want every single item from this page. Every. Single. Item. (Who is going to be my Secret/Awesome Santa this year?)

 “Flat Abs Fast”

Every day it seems I reading more and more about New York City-based trainer Adam Rosante who has a book coming out in March called The 30-Second Body. Here he gives us his favorite moves to get your abs tight.

Core Training Shape Magazine 001

“Jump to a Hot Body”

If you ever want to watch me make a total fool out of myself—ask me to demonstrate the proper way to jump rope. I am sort of a deranged 4th grader when it comes to skipping rope and would rather NOT do it at such a high level.

However, I know it is a fantastic workout and this program developed by Punk Rope creator Tim Haft looks like it would whip anyone into fighting form,

Jump to a Hot Body 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “How Can I Ramp Up Results to Get Toned Fast?” If you are looking to get your strength training up a notch—try out these tips from Shape expert Jay Cardiello.
  • “Pretty in Picturs” Good tips on how to take better selfies.
  • “Sneaky Health Threat: Your Vacuum” Did you know that Hoover can “spit bacteria and dust back into the room?” Well, you do now. (Cleaning out mine right now.)

Overall Grade:

A The December issue brought it big-time with the good workouts and useful information. Plus, the gift guide was tops!
