Shape Cover Star for January/February 2015:

Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham) who is in phenomenal shape and is my new inspiration to not slack off on my workouts this winter. The badass actress has a “hit it & quit it” attitude with the gym with just 30 minutes of cardio per session followed by a quick strength-training sequence that emphasizes high reps versus heavy weights.

You can check out some of Jada’s favorite moves inside the magazine, take a look!

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“The Journey After the Journey”

What a delight it is to see my blogger buddy Brooke Birmingham inside Shape magazine! Brooke is just about the loveliest person you can ever meet which makes her amazing enough on its own. On top of that she lost 172 pounds through diet and exercise.

Brooke is in a round table discussion/article with other five other women who have lost a significant amount of weight (Dacia Root, Francelina Morillo, Ashley Donahoo and Heather McNally) and they talk openly about the wonderful and stressful changes that have happened since they began their weight loss journey. Very inspiring!

“Dance Off the Inches”

I am a terrible dancer, like “Elaine from Seinfeld” bad , but I appreciate those who can do it well (like trainer Anna Kaiser of AKT in Motion studios) who demonstrates a few dancy/strength moves you can do on your own.

Do Anywhere workout 001

“8-Minute Fat Blast”

Do you Tabata?  Beacuse if you do and you are looking for a new workout—try this one from Kathy Glabicky of Tread Tabata which you can do in record time. She uses a combination of treadmill and Plyo moves so take this page with you to the gym.

“Slope Style”

Skiing is not my thing but something about ski gear says “yes” to me.

Slope Style 001

“Hello, New Body”

The Biggest Loser was very smart to hire Jennifer Widerstrom because she is a kick ass trainer who wants women to aspire to be strong and not skinny. Here she gives her own, personal four week plan to get you in great shape without crazy equipment needs or a big time suck.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Winter Sports Special” Shape looks into skiing and snowboarding and offers advice for beginners.
  • Camille LeBlanc Bazinet: The 2014 CrossFit champ offers her best advice on how you can reach your fitness goals.

Overall Grade:

A The January/February issues has some of the best workouts I have seen in a while. Plus, they were smart enough to feature Brooke Birmingham!

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

 “Game Time”

Trainer Melissa Morin created Adult Summer Camp class for the New York Sports Club and offered a few workouts you can do to mimic “playtime” on your own. (Love the “Surfer’s Paddle” move!)

Express Workout 001

“Pump Up Your Run”

Fitness asked DJ Whoo Kid for his picks for a playlist that will help you fun faster and longer.

Run Playlist 001

“The Fit Girl’s Getaway Time”

Looking for a place to vacay that requires a little more out of you than some sunblock and a fruity cocktail? (That has to be true for someone out there, right?) Check out these ideas for taking your week off with some fun sweat sessions included.

Getaway Guide 001

“Amazing Abs”

Trainer Anna Kaiser is super-hot these days with a reputation for helping her students get long lean frames and here we get a few of her moves that target your abs.

Crunch-Free Abs Moves 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “The Proper Way to a Plank” I teach these several times per week but am always looking for new ways to describe how to actually perform a plank. Check out this guide on page 99.
  • “Ace Your Race” Whether or you’re a hardcore runner looking to up your speed or a beginner looking tackle your first 5K—this guide will help you.
  • “Too Healthy For Your Own Good?” I know some folks have a hard time taking even one day off from their workout or veering from their diet in the slightest—but compulsive behavior can take over your thinking and cause bigger problems later. Signs on accessing how “addicted” you really might be.

Overall Grade:

A!  Throw this issue into your beach bag and stay inspired for the summer. (Go ahead and enjoy a fruity cocktail while you are at it!)

What Did We Learn This Month? Women’s Health Mag With Shakira! @WomensHealthMag 4

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

April 2014

Shakira photographed by Jeff Lipsky

Women’s Health Cover Star for April 2014:

Sexy songstress Shakira is on the cover this month and she looks purrrfect! She is a judge on The Voice (a show I have never seen) and she plans to out-think Blake Shelton this season. (I know him!)

Staying in shape after giving birth to her son Milan in January 2013 meant trying new sports such as basketball and tennis. Shakira also “worked her tail off” with trainer Anna Kaiser and you can see some of her workout here:

So what else is in the April issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Win At the Power Ball”

This Dynamax medicine ball looks really cool (I want one!) and this workout from trainer Jessi Kneeland from Peak Performance NYC is a keep IMHO.

15 Minute workout 001

 Spoiler Alert!”

Catchy headline for an article that shows you how long certain foods & condiments should stay in your pantry or fridge. (I always need a reminder on this kind of stuff!)

Spoiler Alert 001

 “Light on Your Feet”

The weather is getting lighter & brighter so why not get a pair of new sneaks to really get in the mood to play outdoors again?

 Sneakers 001

“Perks of Fab Backside”

I didn’t know having a “fab backside” would have anything other than perks, but oh well. The workout here from trainer Holly Perkins is pretty damn great!

Glute workout 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “The Health Threat That Sneaks Up Silently” Women’s Health talks about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
  • “Your Body on Motion Sickness” As someone who has had bouts of vertigo—this resonated with me.
  • Beauty Bonus: Shakira is on the back cover as well with a special beauty trends feature.

Overall Grade:

A  This is a great issue so be sure to check it out!

What Did We Learn This Month? @Shape_Magazine with Sharon Stone on the Cover! 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Shape:

March 2014

Sharon Stone photographed by Nino Munoz

Sharon Stone photographed by Nino Munoz

Shape Cover Star for March 2014:

Are you ready for the sexiness of Sharon “Mother F***in Stone? Well here she is folks—does 56 get any hotter? Mrow!

Sharon has been in a million jillion movies over the years and will soon star in TV’s Agent X playing the Vice President of the United States. In addition to her show business life she has been an activist for amFAR (the AIDS research foundation) for over 20 years. Add all of that along with being a mom to three boys and that makes for one BUSY woman!

In spite of Hollywood’s obsession with youth she refuses to go under the knife and instead enjoys the good health she now enjoys after having survived a stroke in 2001 (yikes!)

The 24-Hour Fitness club devotee (earphones in and no chit-chat on the gym floor, please) likes to change up her workout with a variety of exercises including a few you can see here where she uses a chair for balance and strength poses. (I do not recommend trying this at home if you are as accident-prone as I am!)

What else is on the March issue of Shape?

“Wise Buys”

Here we get a whole of workout gear that gives me the “I wants”—especially the Perfect Duffel Bag from Under Armor. (Can anyone hook a fit chick up?)
