Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? Today (as I am writing this) it is my birthday and I feeling happy about all things going on in my life right now. (Well, except for the noisy new neighbors who can’t seem to move into a building without shaking every single apartment floor along the way! Sheesh!)

Anyhoo–here are my “news & notes” for the week. Enjoy!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast: This week my good friend Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and me posted one of our favorite episodes of “Book Vs. Movie” (which you can subscribe to on iTunes with this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2.) wherein talked about Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The original novella by Truman Capote took place in 1943 NYC and the film directed by Blake Edwards (and starring the incandescent Audrey Hepburn) takes place in the swinging early 60s which is just one of many differences between book and film.

Margo and I originally recorded this back in September but had several technical issues at the time that are now thankfully gone (I am something of a wiz at editing it turns out!)  Hope you like the episode. Let me know what you think and if YOU have any ideas for future episodes. (Player embedded below)

Tips for Your First Aerial Class: Years of cycling have given me terrible hip and hamstring issues that would certainly be alleviated with aerial yoga of some sort. So I pitched this idea to Fit Bottomed Girls Tips for Your First Aerial Class to help me get inspired to try it out. (Have you ever done aerial workouts? Was it fun? Helpful?)

Terry Bikes Spring Gear: Speaking of cycling—about ten years ago I decided to get my workouts out of a spin room and into the open air (best decision ever!) I still have that bike (named Trixie because she is red & shiny) and quickly became obsessed with Terry Bikes which sells THE best bike gear for women. They have everything from seats that will be comfortable on a century ride to cute spring dresses that won’t expose your knickers (unless that is your thing—no judgment here!).

A couple of years ago I pitched them the idea of having me be their first brand ambassador which means I help promote their sales and specials and then get to try out new gear—score! If you have any interest at all in Terry Bikes then be sure to sign up for their newsletter. They have so many excellent deals and giveaways. You will thank me later!

How to be Happier at The Gym: I know that for some people getting to the gym requires motivation and fighting the “I don’t wanna go today” blues. In this feature I give my advice on how to get happier about the gym. What are your favorite tips?

Something Rotten is Going to take Broadway by Storm: Okay—if you are a fan of big, funny, bawdy musicals (Think The Mormon Musical or The Producers) then you must check out Something Rotten which features two actors from the TV show Smash (which I LOVED) Brian D’arcy James and  Christian Borle. The play is set England when Shakespeare is a huge theater star (a very sexy Borle) and a struggling playwright (a hilariously tense D’Arcy James) yearns to create the first ever musical on stage.

I went  to see a preview show for my birthday and had a total blast. One of the best times I have had as an audience member for sure–the crowd ate it up!

Let’s say you know your fair share of Broadway musicals and love theater humor—this will show will fit the bill. It’s in previews right now but I suspect it will be a big hit. (Dare I say a “smash?” Did you see what I did there?”) Take my word—this show will up for a slew of Tony Awards!

Fit Bottomed Eats “Power Balls” Pre-Workout  Recipe

Hello from Freezing Brooklyn!

Hello from Freezing Brooklyn!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? I have a whole bunch of news & notes and I will not waste a minute getting it to you. Don’t worry—the Vlog is back next week with a whole new giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

  • Fit Bottomed Eats “Power Ball for Runners” Recipe: I am lucky enough to be friendly with the amazing dietician Frances Largeman-Roth who sits in the front of my spin class every Sunday morning. (Love my first-row achievers!) Frances contributes this yummy Pre-Workout Powerballs recipe to another Blog I write for—Fit Bottomed Eats. What’s really great about her recipe (if you are a mom) is that they “dairy and nut-free—they pass the school test!”
  • Men’s Journal Talks About the Dangers of Sitting: Almost ten years ago I quit corporate life to work for myself which I assumed would make me healthier but without the travel of the commute every day—in reality, I was sitting even more hours in a row than at a formal office. At first I switched to a standing desk which for sure is helpful but doesn’t challenge my core to be stronger and it made my posture even worse as I just leaned into my laptop. My friend and fitness guru Elizabeth Pongo recommended I try a wobble board to challenge my sense of balance whenever I work at my desk. Wow—what a difference it makes!

(Elizabeth is one of the experts quoted in this excellent feature in Men’s Journal article all about the health risks of sitting and what you can do to counterbalance them. Good stuff!)

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Be sure to check back next week for my next Vlog post and giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick: “The Dog Scratched at My Face” Post (A Lesson in Gratitude) 6

Brooklyn Fit Chick

“Yep, A Dog Scratched My Face” Post

How I Spent My New Year’s Eve, Lessons on Gratitude,

Plus: My Goal to Be More Like Chris & Theresa in 2015

What up 2015?!

What up 2015?!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So how was your New Year’s Eve? Mine was 99% supremely awesome. I spent it with great friends who live just around the block from me. Do you understand how amazing that is? I could (potentially) drink my weight in champagne and walk home in no time. Oh my, it started off so well.

There was drinking and merriment.

NYE

I wore party shoes (my Kate Spade statement heels)

I hung out with my homies

(It only looks as if there is a branch growing out of the top of my head)

(It only looks as if there is a branch growing out of the top of my head)

There was a floating shark

“White Lines” by Grand Master Flash invaded the room…

And then….as the clock struck 1 am and I decided to head home. But first I wanted to just pet the home owner’s doggie goodbye as I left and let’s just say…I might have zigged when I should have zagged because it seems as if I got just a little close too his sweet face for comfort as he took a swipe at me missing my left eye by thismuch.

Oh—and while I was cleaning out my wound one of my contacts fell out so I was half blind and trying to assess what just happened to me. (Only a nightmare I have been imagining since I got my first pair of contacts in the seventh grade.)

So this is where the gratefulness comes in—stick with me!

I am grateful because my friend Sage was right there when it happened. He is an ER doctor and made sure I was taken care of right away. He called the local hospital and insisted I get stiches. (I was blubbering about wanting to go home but my friends wisely put the kibosh on that.)

So my friends Chris and Theresa took me to the hospital in Sunset Park on New Year’s Eve which is an interesting night to be at an ER to say the very least. That sat with me until 5 am and kept me calm. We talked movies, music and podcasts when Chris reminded me that an awesome woman named Tina Fey has a scar on her face and it doesn’t stop her from doing anything she wants in her life.

At 5 am I took this selfie to show off my surgeon’s amazing stitching:

me Hospital

I tried to bribe the doctor with a $100 Amex gift card to get some Botox and fillers while we were at it but she explained they don’t keep those on had in the emergency room in Sunset Park. (Never hurts to ask!)

Since then I have been taking it easy on the couch and getting caught up for the next episode of the Book Vs Movie podcast (we are back with our first episode of the 2015 Primary Colors available for download on January 17th!)

Couch

I snuggled with my kitties Tennessee

T with me

And Sweet Sarah

Sarah with me

I have also been fighting a nasty cold at the same time so let’s just say I am currently NOT as pretty as a picture but I am still so damn grateful.

What am I grateful for?

  • I am grateful I have such good friends to hang out with on New Year’s Eve who can also handle an emergency.
  • I am grateful the dog didn’t take out my eye.
  • I am grateful the surgeon took her time to make sure my stitches were handled correctly.
  • I am grateful for Chris and Theresa for taking care of me with no thought to how long it would take and without really knowing the neighborhood we were driving in the middle of the night on New Year’s freaking Eve! (They have ensured very good karma for them in 2015.)
  • I am grateful for all of my friends and family who have been checking in on me.

And just so you know—me and the dog are super cool. He really is a good boy. I know it wasn’t personal.

But when people say let sleeping dogs lie—believe them!

Since then (has it only been 5 days? Wow!) I have taught five spin and two core classes so let’s just say I am a badass who will handle this obstacle. 2014 may have left me bruised and battered but I am determined to kick 2015 right square in the pants no matter what!

I am also thinking of how I am going to incorporate being more like Chris & Theresa from now on because they rock so freaking hard! (Those two crazy kids got engaged this past year so I am sending them a Mazel as well!)

I want to be the kind of person who deserves this much love and care when I am completely vulnerable. They have reminded me about the power of kindness so once again—I am grateful!

Next week I will be back with a fabulous Weight Watchers dance workout kit giveaway so stay tuned when I will post my Vlog again. I hope you understand—with a black eye and a runny nose I just did NOT feel like putting my face on You Tube just yet. Hand to god—next week for sure.

Coming up this week I will have my Tria review and my own personal look at the January Women’s Health magazine so keep checking back here!

This girl is taking a Vlogging/Giveaway break for a few days. Cheers!

Hey there! Hi There! Ho There!

How are you gang? Me? I am fine and dandy but my schedule is just a bit tight right now and I could not get it together for a Vlog post this week. Horrors! I swore when I started this venture that I would never miss a week NO MATTER WHAT. But guess what? Life has a way of moving in on your great plans and throwing them right back into your face while saying “HA!”

However, next week for sure I will be back and up and running. In the meantime I have just a couple of news items for you:

  • Book vs Movie: Our little podcast had our latest episode and here it is Book Vs Movie: Bridget Jones’s Diary. Margo P. and I are launching it on a new website and using a whole new platform to deliver in January so stay tuned for even more fun stuff. Yay!
  • Tria Hair Removal Laser Review: I am in the middle of trying out a new product, the Tria Portable Laser Hair Removal and so far I am loving it. It’s going to be a three-month trial but I will give you more details next week on my Vlog.
  • Running: So I am considering running the Brooklyn Rock & Roll Half Marathon in October and wanted your advice, when should I start training? Please send em your best tips!

Okay–so I will still be here this week for magazine reviews and a possible new playlist. After this week my schedule should hopefully open up and I will be back to Vlogging and giveaways. (Promise!)  Thank you so much for being so understanding.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 102: Amazing Fighters of Sexism, NYC Fit Bloggin Meet Up and More! 1

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #102

The Amazing Erin Brown and The Awesome Karl Stefanovic,

 NYC Fitbloggin Tweet-Up Date!!

Plus: Book vs. Movie Podcast “Wizard of Oz” Is Live!

Me

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone today? I had a crazy busy weekend and could not seem to find the time to get to this post but darn it—I am going to make it happen today. This week I want to present a couple of my favorite news stories and posts from this past week plus I drop a hint about the next NYC Meet-Up for Fitbloggin Peeps. Oh, and we have a new episode of Book Vs Movie where we talk about the Merry Old land of Oz so let’s get to it—shall we!

  • The Fabulous Erin Brown: I am a longtime fan of Erin Brown who is an inspirational gal who describes herself as “ Writer. Lecturer. Wellness junkie. Bad ass mother. Woman. I am Erin Brown.” Erin is a feminist and is a tireless supporter of women and protector of body images. If you want to learn about this fantastic lady and why I worship her…check out this post in particular. Erin is out to bash the body-shamers to bits!

  • The Awesome Aussie Karl Stefanovic: If you don’t know about Karl—he is the host of Australia’s version of the Today Show and this righteous dude was tired of hearing his female co-hosts get criticized for their appearance so he took on the task of wearing the same exact suit every day for a year (he only changed his tie) to prove that men are judges far less harshly for how they look. Well guess what—not ONE person noticed he was wearing the same outfit every day. No one. You can read all about his here from the Buzz Feed article and check out this clip from his colleague Lisa Wilkinson who spoke out about sexism in the media industry.

  • NYC-Fitbloggin Meet-Up: I am a little nervous about posting this as the Fitbloggin group on Facebook is “super-secret” but if you are a member—I am setting up a drinks date for Saturday, December 6th at 2 pm for the NYC area fitbloggin peeps. If you want to join us go check out the details on Facebook!

  • Book vs. Movie Takes on “The Wizard of Oz” The lovely Margo P. and I had a fun chat last week for our Book vs. Movie podcast talking about the crazy differences between the book and movie The Wizard of Oz which you can listen to by subscribing to us on iTunes! Our next episode will be about the “Rom Com” classic Bridget Jones’ Diary. Can’t wait to dive into that one!

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 101: “Wobble Board” Challenge, Spin Class Fail, Yoga DVD Giveaway & More! 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #101

My Go Fit Wobble Board Challenge, Spin Class Video Fail, Students With Body Dysmorphia (Fellow Instructors—Please Help Me!)

Book Vs Movie Podcast Takes on “Oz”

Plus: Element: 5-Day Yoga DVD Giveaway!

Enter to win this yoga DVD!

Enter to win this yoga DVD!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am back in the saddle of Blogging and Vlogging and have SO much to tell you all that I think I am going to burst! It’s been a hectic week here and I have much to share (including a new yoga DVD giveaway) so let’s get to it shall we?

  • My Go Fit Wobble Board Self-Challenge: For almost three years now I have been working at a standing desk which I thought would help my core but lately realize that I am still not engaging myself proprioceptively—in other words my sense of balance is hardly ever challenged and my shoulders are showing signs of not-cute stooping. YIKES! So I am challenging myself to try and balance on a Go Fit wobble board whenever I am checking e-mails at my desk. It’s been two days so far and let me tell y’all—standing on a wobble board is hard as hell! So far I have found it to be a humbling experiment but I am going to report back to you all in one month to let you know my progress with it. (Shoot–now I am making myself accountable, huh?)
  • Whoa-This is a Spin Class FAIL: I have seen this video of a super-rowdy spin class all over the place and boy do I hate to be the spoil sport here but this is NOT a regulation indoor cycling class. I have been teaching for almost 10 years now and can spot terrible form all over the room (with WAY too much stress upper back/trapezius muscles) and the moves are just not safe! Okay, yes—they are exercising and having fun. The spirit in the room is truly inspiring, but I have to say that beware of any spin class where you are out of the saddle and doing crazy moves. (And for love of all that is healthy and sane in this world—enough with the damn “push-ups” on handlebars!) I go into more detail in the Vlog below on why this video is a big bucket of NOPE in my book.
  • Students With Possible Body Dysmorphia: Fellow instructors please help me! I have a student who takes my boot camp class who is so upset about wanting to lose five pounds she wants to drop my class because I am not “intense” enough for her. Let me make this clear—if I thought I was the issue I would walk away and wish her well. But this young lady does NOT need to lose weight and I am worried she has body dysmorphia. I am not her therapist but feel a responsibility towards her. Any advice for me on how I should handle this situation? Thank you in advance!!

And now for more fun topics!

  • Book vs. Movie “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”: Up next on the Book vs. Movie podcast Margo P. (aka “She’s Nacho Mama”) and I are taking on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (the 1900 book and the 1939 classic film) with the episode to drop on iTunes and Sticher this Friday evening November 14th. Let me say this—if you think the book that was the source for movie The Wizard of Oz was sweet & fun you have NO idea how truly twisted the Frank L. Baum classic is. So hang tight for that episode and if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. (Namaste!)
  • 5-Day Yoga DVD Giveaway: Do you promise yourself to make more time for yoga and yet can never seem to fit it into your day? (Hanging my head in shame..) Then this is the giveaway you have been waiting for because today I am giving one copy of Element: 5-Day Yoga to one lucky person this week. Check out how to win from the Vlog below and good luck to all of you. (Well—the Continental U.S. peeps as they are the only ones who can enter this giveaway!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!
