Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am one of those people who love to complain how I won exactly one trophy when I was a kid. It was by the local Fire Department and they asked for kids in my grade to paint something that would speak to fire prevention. My family was big into camping at the time so I create a pastiche to forest fires which earned me first place which felt great!

(Here I am with my usual tennis shoes and messy hair.)

After that sweet win—personal victories have escaped me. I have won on teams and as part of a group effort but those solo prizes have been few and far between.

Never a winner when my Blogger peeps have a giveaway and I have entered almost every sweepstakes from Shape and SELF magazine with no results except SPAM emails from affiliate advertisers.

You know that game where you have to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar in order to win the prize?

What are the odds a person actually picks the actual number of beans and winds up coming in second because it was a two-way tie decided by a coin toss? (Me at the age of ten and I have NEVER played one of those games since then. It still stings to think about it…)

Well my luck change recently when I noticed a tweet from Reebok which had a photo of yoga goddess Tara Stiles signing a yoga mat. The tweet asked “what would you do if you won a yoga mat signed by Tara” and I quickly wrote back that I would finally learn how to perform a crow pose.

Well guess what? My lucky streak is starting to happen in 2016 because I received the following tweet:

Yippee! The mat arrived in two days and this cat lady is very happy with the design!

Now I just need to learn how to do the crow pose—LOL! Any advice for a crow pose-fearing yoga newbie– leave them in the comments below and hopefully I will be able to nail it sooner than later! (Will post pictures of my progress!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Hits:

As some of you know—I am a NYC contributor for the popular fitness Blog Fit Bottomed Girls and this month I have had some articles featured there including:

  • A 30-minute HIIT workout that will rock you like a hurricane! In this one I combine High Intensity Intervals of cardio busts with weight bearing moves to get an intense workout in a short amount of time. In case you are wondering about my credentials—I am a certified personal trainer from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and have my group fitness certification from AFAA and try every workout myself before I hit the publish button.   • Lower Ab Movies: I also reach out to my favorite health & fitness peeps with their best advice for different kinds of workouts and in this one they offer their favorite lower abs moves to lose the tummy pooch.

Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and after being on the over a year our numbers keep going up and up. For example—in December we had the most downloads in our history happen and then in January we went up 50% over that which is totally insane but we are having so much fun with it.

Our newest episode was suggested by a fan—Perks of Being a Wallflower which we both love. I have it here if you want to listen to it but I also want to know what your favorite book to movie adaptions are and what we should cover next. Merci in advance!

All right gang—where on earth did this month go? October is arriving this week and I have not made Halloween plans or changed out my summer wardrobe yet. What gives?

Part of it must be the fact that it is still so darn hot on the east coast that it’s hard to remember that the current season is, in fact, autumn. (Which reminds me—I really need to get another bike ride in before I pack away those padded bikes shorts for the year…)

Anyhoo—I have a few things to discuss today from my groovy podcast to my “Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift” playlist. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we just recorded one of our best episodes yet—Like Water for Chocolate (swoon!) This was the first time I had read the novel from Laura Esquivel and found it very moving.

Magical realism is not my favorite genre of fiction (I am normally a more non-fiction kind of gal) but this tale took me to a whole other part of the world and created a universe that fascinated me.

The film (which for some reason was NOT nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film that year—sheesh!) is a sun-soaked delight that takes the audience on a journey of love, sadness and magic. Check out the player below if you want to hear our latest episode.

Next time we plan to discuss the 50s classic The Bad Seed from William March. (And after that we will tackle The Silence of the Lambs!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a NYC-based reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get to attend fun events and create the content that totally interests me. (Win/Win!) This past week I had two different articles posted and would love to get your feedback on them when you have a free moment.

1: 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Drop Now: This one was inspired by an experience I had recently with a student who habitually showed up late for my spin class. Let’s call her Sheila.

Sheila was a “problem child” for me due to the fact that she dropped in at least ten minutes late and then left early for every single class. Every. Single. One. Plus, she would space out during the ride and sit upright absorbed in her thoughts which distracted the students around her.

I would often hear after a ride ‘What is wrong with her? Why is she always late? Can you do anything about this because she is so distracting?!”

The problem is that she always arrived late and left early so when could I talk to her about this?

Then one morning she sauntered in 15-minutes late into the ride and just shrugged her shoulders at me. I had officially had enough and put my hand and said “Sorry but no, you are too late for this class.”

Sheila glared at me and left right away. Then she quit the gym for good. Suddenly my problem child had vanished and the overwhelming “thank goodness she is gone!” from her (former) fellow riders gave me the idea to write down the bad habits students can bring to class and why they need to stop it now.

2: My second feature is The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist which I was inspired to create after continually reading about a big time beef that the two reigning pop divas seem to be in. Not a big backstory for this one but there you go…

Can you believe the summer is halfway over? I have been busier than the proverbial bee these last few months with family obligations, work (day job) and teaching all of my classes that my personal wellness has suffered a bit. I am trying to get back in the saddle diet (healthy eating) and getting more rest at night. The box jumps and sprints will have to wait until I get back to my base level of fitness. Stress can truly be a silent killer and my goal is to learn how to manage it better and not let my health suffer.

Okay—let’s get back to the fun. Today I want to talk about our latest podcast news, a fitness instructor you MUST follow on Twitter and Women’s Health magazine’s newest competition to find the “Next Fitness Star!”

It was called Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella and boy did they make some changes between them!)

Coach Nicole at Home: Many moons ago when I started out as a fitness instructor I would constantly scour clips on You Tube to get ideas on how to teach an actual class. My first love was teaching spin and it seems daunting to me to try any other kind of classes. Well Coach Nicole Nichols of Spark People pretty much saved my life! The first clip I ever memorized was her 15-Minute Abs Workout which I repeated basically word for word for my own classes. (Truth!)

Well Coach Nicole is on to her next venture and will soon be hosting workouts on her very own website which goes live on August 1st. In the meantime, be sure to like her Facebook page and follow her on Twitter here. (love you Coach Nicole!

Thank you for being patient with me while I took some time to be with my family and travel a bit. My father passed away on May 16th and we held his Memorial Service last weekend in Reno where he and mom retired to in 2003. In the 12 years he lived there my dad made such a positive impact on the community it was a packed house and I had the pleasure of meeting dozens of people who promise to carry on my father’s mission on community service and supporting local artists.

It was all so very sad yet inspiring and I am choosing to take his spirit with me as I face the challenges of my life in front of me.

My eating and workout habits have been sliding these last few weeks but I am now on track to get back to my healthiest state and create positive & happy memories in the future. Any advice on how to get back in the saddle of regular workouts because if so—please send them my way.

Maximum Booty Lifting & Core Activation Workout

Westlake Village, CA May 5, 2015 –Patricia Friberg’s newest DVD “BOTTOM LINE & A CORE DEFINED (73 minutes, $19.95) is a Pilates and strength based workout that focuses on the bottom half of the body. This step-wise program activates the core including the gluteal and abdominal muscles. The workout advances throughout to provide the necessary challenges for a strong core and lifted bottom. This program helps to improve posture and overall athletic performance. The DVD begins with an introduction from Patricia on how to progress through these exercises. She suggests doing the bottom activation segment a few times before going on to bottom activation 2, and then varying between both, back and forth for maximum results.

The DVD is broken down into sections that include: Introduction; Explanation on how to use the program; An explanation from Physical Therapist, Rebecca Gunn, who gives an expert perspective on core work and why it’s important; A section on alignment set up and proper position to get the most from the workout; Bottom Activation 1 exercises for building endurance in the backside; Bottom Activation 2; and, A Core Defined section. Patricia demonstrates the entire workout as Adam and Trudy show variations with and without a band. Equipment recommended but not included in this DVD are a small fitness ball and loop band.

All around Health and Fitness expert, Patricia Friberg is the creator of the award winning Belly Beautiful Workout series and has been motivating students in her private and group fitness classes for over 20 years.  She teaches a variety of formats including: Pilates, Spinning, Kickboxing, Step, BOSU, Body Pump, Circuit, Outdoor Boot Camp, and Yoga.  Patricia is fully certified by Stott Pilates and holds certifications in GYROTONIC, GYROKINESIS, Yoga, Barre, Schwinn Cycling as well as the American Council on Exercise. She teaches in premier clubs and studios across the country including Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, including Harpo Studios, Yoga Works and Equinox. She trains professional athletes including players in the NBA and NFL and is a regular contributor on Fitness Glow. Patricia is ACE certified and a member of IDEA.

Outside of fitness, Patricia is a licensed mental health counselor with a Master’s degree from Pratt Institute. Currently Patricia lives in Southern California with her husband and two boys. Hey Gang!

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity between work, life and you know—trying to fit in a fun activity or two. My summer has been a little too busy for my taste but I am hoping things will settle down soon and I can better about staying in touch. So let me tell you about a few things happening in my world and then I want to hear what is going on with you!

Without further ado—let’s get to this week’s main post!

Yoga in Times Square (For Reals!): June 21, 2015 was declared the world’s first “International Day of Yoga” with fabulous Zen-like events taking place around the globe including the annual Summer Solstice in Times Square which I covered a few years ago for Fit Bottomed Girls. It was so magical that when I had the chance to once again go into the middle of NYC and do some yoga on a hot summer afternoon—I jumped at it.

It is indescribable the feeling of trying out the mountain pose or a backward bend and being in the middle of one of the most celebrated places in the world. Somehow in the heat, humidity, car noises and usual tourists rambling about we were able to find a peaceful place in our minds. I wish I had taken more photos but I was just so caught up in the moment that I only have these to share with you. Next time you will all just have to out here with me to see it for yourself!

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) had planned to record our first “80s” era episode with the classic Less Than Zero when Amazon Prime decided to NOT ship her DVD in time (grrr.) Have no fear—we will record that podcast very soon because we are both DYING to talk about Andrew McCarthy and James Spader but it gave us an opportunity to turn to the vaults.

Soooo we decided to go back to our archives and release a past episode where we discussed The Help. (Many people have asked for this one!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Playlist: I am lucky enough to write for Fit Bottomed Girls and this past week they had their annual “BFF” (Best Friend Forever) celebration where they talked about how amazing (and much needed) a BFF is on our lives ( I certainly love mine!) So I put together the BFF Workout Playlist and wanted to ask you—what song reminds you of your BFF? What would you add to my list?

What up 2015?!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So how was your New Year’s Eve? Mine was 99% supremely awesome. I spent it with great friends who live just around the block from me. Do you understand how amazing that is? I could (potentially) drink my weight in champagne and walk home in no time. Oh my, it started off so well.

There was drinking and merriment.

And then….as the clock struck 1 am and I decided to head home. But first I wanted to just pet the home owner’s doggie goodbye as I left and let’s just say…I might have zigged when I should have zagged because it seems as if I got just a little close too his sweet face for comfort as he took a swipe at me missing my left eye by thismuch.

Oh—and while I was cleaning out my wound one of my contacts fell out so I was half blind and trying to assess what just happened to me. (Only a nightmare I have been imagining since I got my first pair of contacts in the seventh grade.)

So this is where the gratefulness comes in—stick with me!

I am grateful because my friend Sage was right there when it happened. He is an ER doctor and made sure I was taken care of right away. He called the local hospital and insisted I get stiches. (I was blubbering about wanting to go home but my friends wisely put the kibosh on that.)

So my friends Chris and Theresa took me to the hospital in Sunset Park on New Year’s Eve which is an interesting night to be at an ER to say the very least. That sat with me until 5 am and kept me calm. We talked movies, music and podcasts when Chris reminded me that an awesome woman named Tina Fey has a scar on her face and it doesn’t stop her from doing anything she wants in her life.

At 5 am I took this selfie to show off my surgeon’s amazing stitching:

I tried to bribe the doctor with a $100 Amex gift card to get some Botox and fillers while we were at it but she explained they don’t keep those on had in the emergency room in Sunset Park. (Never hurts to ask!)

Since then I have been taking it easy on the couch and getting caught up for the next episode of the Book Vs Movie podcast (we are back with our first episode of the 2015 Primary Colors available for download on January 17th!)

I have also been fighting a nasty cold at the same time so let’s just say I am currently NOT as pretty as a picture but I am still so damn grateful.

What am I grateful for?

  • I am grateful I have such good friends to hang out with on New Year’s Eve who can also handle an emergency.
  • I am grateful the dog didn’t take out my eye.
  • I am grateful the surgeon took her time to make sure my stitches were handled correctly.
  • I am grateful for Chris and Theresa for taking care of me with no thought to how long it would take and without really knowing the neighborhood we were driving in the middle of the night on New Year’s freaking Eve! (They have ensured very good karma for them in 2015.)
  • I am grateful for all of my friends and family who have been checking in on me.

And just so you know—me and the dog are super cool. He really is a good boy. I know it wasn’t personal.

But when people say let sleeping dogs lie—believe them!

Since then (has it only been 5 days? Wow!) I have taught five spin and two core classes so let’s just say I am a badass who will handle this obstacle. 2014 may have left me bruised and battered but I am determined to kick 2015 right square in the pants no matter what!

I am also thinking of how I am going to incorporate being more like Chris & Theresa from now on because they rock so freaking hard! (Those two crazy kids got engaged this past year so I am sending them a Mazel as well!)

I want to be the kind of person who deserves this much love and care when I am completely vulnerable. They have reminded me about the power of kindness so once again—I am grateful!

Next week I will be back with a fabulous Weight Watchers dance workout kit giveaway so stay tuned when I will post my Vlog again. I hope you understand—with a black eye and a runny nose I just did NOT feel like putting my face on You Tube just yet. Hand to god—next week for sure.

This week I want to talk about “Hot Yoga Tips,” SELF magazine’s new direction, my first Twitter chat and a cool smoothie eBook that you can win today. Let’s get to it!

  • Hot Yoga Tips Fit Bottomed Girls: I attended my first hot yoga class last year at Modo Yoga NYC and loved how much longer and leaner I felt afterwards. (Though the heat is murder on my frizz-tastic hair!) Anyhoo—the experience gave me the inspiration to write Tips for Your First Hot Yoga Class for Fit Bottomed Girls and I appreciate any Tweets and shares y’all can give me for it. (Thanks in advance!)
  • The New Look of SELF: Last March the editor in chief of SELF was fired which was unpleasant for everyone involved. So the folks at Condé Nast decided that their only fitness-centric pub should go in a whole new direction with former Cosmopolitan Executive Joyce Chang. Chang does not have a health/fitness editorial background so she has given SELF a makeover which you can read about at Fashionista, Jezebel and BET. The October issue features a beautiful model on the cover (Joan Smalls) as they celebrate “The Best Bodies in the World.” It’s very—um, fashion-centric and certainly a glammed-up version of SELF. It looks gorgeous which is a HUGE improvement upon the look of the magazine in the last year which was dog sh*t.

(However, I am reserving judgment on whether I will return to reviewing them monthly (I gave up last November as the editorial went down the “20-something only” crap hole) because this issue is a little too frou-frou and chic for my personal taste. Perhaps Joyce Chang just wants to show her classier direction and will incorporate more workouts in the future issues? I hope so but will wait until the next month before I make my decision. Good luck SELF—you look a HELL OF A LOT better. Now bring on more fitness articles!)

  • Book vs. Movie Twitter Chat: I participated in my very first Twitter chat this week in support of the Book vs. Movie podcast and it was about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on! (I won’t swear I went braless…) The best part of the chat (which you can follow here) was getting suggestions from the Twitter peeps on the books that have been adapted to film that we should cover. Now—let me be clear—no way do I plan to read Great Expectations. But the other suggestions were pretty amazing. SO—if you have been reading all of these bullet points diligently and have not just scanned them—please give me some suggestions below in the comments on what books YOU want Margo P. and me to cover in the future. We are pretty open-minded so fire away! Oh, and we have our own twitter handle so follow us @bookversusmovie Namaste!
