Brooklyn Fit Chick: “This is What We Came For” 50-Minute Ride

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“This is What We Came For” Playlist (50 Minute-Ride)

img_4657

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Sorry for the delay everyone. I did not realize how much time has gone by but between work (two jobs,) turning my hobbies into paying gigs (two podcasts) and travel– I have been terrible about keeping up my playlists. When I began teaching I would make the point to create a new one each week. Over time it has turned into maybe once per month that I can curate a new set of tunes that I feel good about.

One of my big lessons in teaching fitness is that quality trumps novelty anytime. Sure some people can churn out new and different with an almost alarming frequency but are they creating anything good? If the  list is contains only 20% good tunes—then who cares if it is all new?

Many of my old playlists (I keep them all on file cards like some kind of a spin maniac) embarrass the hell out of me. I am so much more thoughtful now as to what my students want to hear which is a variety of styles. By getting out of my own iPod and looking at other places to gain new music I have learned how amazing Pink, OneRepublic, Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake really are. That 80s music (no matter how it makes me) is not everyone’s favorite genre. How amazing and inclusive it is to have all kinds of music represented in one hour and that produces happy students.

So today is a collection I have been trotting lately out that has been getting lots of praise. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

  • This is What We Came For: Calvin Harris with Rhianna

Welcome to the Brooklyn Fit Chick playlist Calvin! It only took you shading Taylor Swift on Instagram to get my attention! (Not really—you make great music and I should have included you ages ago.

  • Kid Icarus: Sam Roberts Band

Second songs on my playlist are sometimes the toughest one for me to figure out. They need to gain on the energy from the starter and help set the mood for the workout.  The Sam Roberts Band has lost of great tunes of you are not aware of them. Check them out!

  • Uprising: Muse

This song is a uniter not a divider. Everyone loves banging their heads along to this one!

  • I Don’t Feel Like Dancing: Scissor Sisters

This is my absolute top song for when I am in a bad mood. Elton John co-wrote which adds to its overall awesomeness.

  • No More Drama: Mary J Bloge

Everyone is powerless to this magical power ballad. I have seen straight white boys cheer along to it!

  • Tongue Tied: Group Love

I like the overall “boppiness” of this tune and yes, I did make that word up on the fly. You like?

  • Monkey Wrench: Foo Fighters

It would not be a Brooklyn Fit Chick ride without my beloved Foos.

  • Ride: twenty one pilots

I really enjoy this band but can someone please explain to me why they use all lower case letters in their names? (Coughs) affected (coughs, coughs.)

  • Keep the Car Running: Arcade Fire

This is one of the best songs to sprint to so why is it only 3 ½ minutes? Work on that Arcade Fire peeps!

  • Sexy Back: Justin Timberlake

A blast from the past and cannot believe it took me so damn long to bring it back.

  • Creep: TLC

Supposedly Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez (“Turn on channel 5—she’s burning the house down!”) hated this song as it seems to promote people cheating on one another. Thankfully they talked her into releasing it as it is the dopest jam.

  • Baby, You’re the World to Me: David Gray

Can someone please tell me what happened to David Gray? I miss hearing him on the radio!

  • Simple Man: Lynrd Skynrd

Never have three guitars dueling it out have sounded so down, dirty and amazing.

That’s it for me this time. What are your new favorite tunes you think I should check out?

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: Featuring Eminem, The Weeknd, JR JR and More!

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Gone” Playlist (50 Minute-Ride)

187596325-eminem

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How on earth did a whole month go by without me creating a new playlist? Sheesh! You know how it is—Thanksgiving shows up out of nowhere and the next thing you know there are gifts to buy, breads to bake and multiple holiday cards to send. It’s a wonder I was able to sneak one in this past week but I did just that (patting herself on the back.)

Let me know what you think of it and remember—I need song suggestions, always. So be sure to post them in the comments below!

Thanks!

  • Gone: JR JR

The band’s PR rep got in touch with me via my work for Fit Bottomed Girls where I am compiling a peppy/upbeat playlist to post sometime in January.

Those of you who actually know me would not exactly call me “peppy” (spastic, yes but not peppy.) However, this song just got under my skin and I decided to use it in classes this past weekend and everyone loved it. So there you go!

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

For every class I teach I make sure  the “second” song is a butt kicker to get everyone in gear and to really get their collective heartrates up. This song might just be a wee bit too fast but, so what? It works!

  • Mass Romantic: The New Pornographers

One of my favorite Canadian bands really cooks with this playful tune that has a jangly sound. (I like me some jangle!)

  • Adventure of a Lifetime: Coldplay

I know there are Coldplay haters that exist in the world but I don’t give a rat’s butt about any of them. They know how to craft music  that will make you want to move and bop your head to the beat. #teamchrismartin

  • Lose Yourself: Eminem

True story—the gym’s stereo broke over this past weekend and I had to use a little boom box in a big room to teach my classes.  That in and of itself was bad enough, but having to play this amazing song by Eminem with a low volume almost killed me! You need volume to really raise the roof with this one. (Truth)

  • The Wolf: Mumford & Sons

Thee is nary a banjo in this one from the British band that really rocks it out here.

  • 2 Heads: Coleman Hell

Another Canadian (Thunder Bay, Ontario!) on my list and this one DOES indeed use a banjo with amazing results on his song here.

  • Can’t feel My Face: The Weeknd

ANOTHER Canadian (Toronto!) and this is his biggest hit in the U.S. so far. Just try to listen and move to the beat—it’s impossible!

  • Price Tag: Jessie J

I love this song because it mixes unbridled optimism with a fun /not-posh British accent.

  • Cannibal: Silversun Pickups

The Silversun Pickups write songs that are so hard charging and excellent that they are virtually all perfect for high speed sprints and intervals.

  • Please Don’t Leave Me: P!nk

Alecia Moore (P!nk’s real name!) writes some of the sweetest ear candy in the whole world and this romantic song always gets to me.

  • Time to Pretend: MGMT

Whatever happened to this band? Does anyone know?

  • Song for Someone: U2

Some people groused about getting a whole free album downloaded (for free!) into their iTunes accounts by one of the biggest bands of all time. (First world problems, people!) I on the other hand think it’s one of their best efforts and this song in particular is beautiful.

That’s it for me this time. Now go out there get your workout in!

The “Cup Of Life” 50 Minute Playlist with Ricky M., Fifth Harmony, Drake and More!

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“The Cup of Life” (50 Minute-Ride)

ricky-martin

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s new playlist time and today’s was inspired after reminiscing with a friend about the time we watched Ricky Martin kick serious butt at the Grammy Awards in the late 1990s. You will see what I am talking about below where I list all of my favorite songs to play in my classes this past week.

It’s a mixture of old and new tunes that I hope get you in the mood to work a little harder or will just make that workout more tolerable with some good music!

Let me know what you think of it and remember—I need song suggestions, always. So be sure to post them in the comments below!

Thanks!

  • The Cup of Life: Ricky Martin

Just try to listen to this and NOT want to move your booty. It’s impossible!

  • Synchronicity I: The Police

This song has an old school 80s New Wave meets rock n’ roll feel that really helps to accelerate the mood and feeling in the room. Like THE perfect second song to play in any workout.

  • Worth It: Fifth Harmony

One of those tunes that always makes me want to sing along and declare my worth—which sky high, people!

  • Machinehead: Bush

If I have to pick a favorite decade for music it would have to be the 90s and this song reminds me of my younger days when I would play it at full blast while tooling around California.

  • You Get What You Give: New Radicals

The term “one hit wonder” has a negative connotation but how many people even have that great one hit even in them much less get to produce it? This song feels like it could be the perfect graduation day tune and always gives me the “happies.”

  • Diamonds: Rhianna

I am a little late to the Rhianna party but damn she makes some great music!

  • Wake Up Call: Maroon 5

The song is pretty darn great but the video that features my favorite heartthrob Jeremy Sisto—wow!

  • The Hand That Feeds: Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor knows how to write heart pumping techno meets heard rock music that will make you want to kick it into a higher gear.

  • First: Cold War Kids

I love this song for climbs using a ton of resistance or a big incline on the treadmill.

  • Hotline Bling: Drake

This is a song I literally cannot get out of my head. And when I use it in my classes my student bop their heads to the beat in the most adorable way. Priceless!

Bonus version of Hotline Bling  with a cat!

  • O.B: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

If you are looking for a fun, catchy tune to take on a few last sprints—try this one for sure. You will thank me later!

  • Empire State of Mind: Jay Z & Alicia Keys

Quite simple THE best song about New York ever though I admit that Billy Joel comes a close second.

  • All You Favorite Bands: Dawes

Love this for a cool down song and am grateful I teach in a dark spin room most of the time because when this gem from Dawes comes on over the speakers,  I get  super weepy.

That’s it for me this time. Now go out there get your workout in!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Notes: “Like Water for Chocolate” 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Want Students to Drop NOw

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

“Book vs Movie” Podcast Episode “Like Water for Chocolate”

“6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Stop Now”

“The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist”

 brooklynfitnesschickBIKE_0701

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

All right gang—where on earth did this month go? October is arriving this week and I have not made Halloween plans or changed out my summer wardrobe yet. What gives?

Part of it must be the fact that it is still so darn hot on the east coast that it’s hard to remember that the current season is, in fact, autumn. (Which reminds me—I really need to get another bike ride in before I pack away those padded bikes shorts for the year…)

Anyhoo—I have a few things to discuss today from my groovy podcast to my “Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift” playlist. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we just recorded one of our best episodes yet—Like Water for Chocolate (swoon!) This was the first time I had read the novel from Laura Esquivel and found it very moving.

Magical realism is not my favorite genre of fiction (I am normally a more non-fiction kind of gal) but this tale took me to a whole other part of the world and created a universe that fascinated me.

The film (which for some reason was NOT nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film that year—sheesh!) is a sun-soaked delight that takes the audience on a journey of love, sadness and magic. Check out the player below if you want to hear our latest episode.

Next time we plan to discuss the 50s classic The Bad Seed from William March. (And after that we will tackle The Silence of the Lambs!)

What are your favorite books to movies adaptations? I want to hear about them in the comments below!

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a NYC-based reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get to attend fun events and create the content that totally interests me. (Win/Win!) This past week I had two different articles posted and would love to get your feedback on them when you have a free moment.

1: 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Drop Now: This one was inspired by an experience I had recently with a student who habitually showed up late for my spin class. Let’s call her Sheila.

Sheila was a “problem child” for me due to the fact that she dropped in at least ten minutes late and then left early for every single class. Every. Single. One. Plus, she would space out during the ride and sit upright absorbed in her thoughts which distracted the students around her.

I would often hear after a ride ‘What is wrong with her? Why is she always late? Can you do anything about this because she is so distracting?!”

The problem is that she always arrived late and left early so when could I talk to her about this?

Then one morning she sauntered in 15-minutes late into the ride and just shrugged her shoulders at me. I had officially had enough and put my hand and said “Sorry but no, you are too late for this class.”

Sheila glared at me and left right away. Then she quit the gym for good. Suddenly my problem child had vanished and the overwhelming “thank goodness she is gone!” from her (former) fellow riders gave me the idea to write down the bad habits students can bring to class and why they need to stop it now.

Are any of you instructors? Have you ever had a “Sheila” to deal with in your career? What bad habits would you add to this list?

2: My second feature is The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist which I was inspired to create after continually reading about a big time beef that the two reigning pop divas seem to be in. Not a big backstory for this one but there you go…

Do you think Katy and Taylor are feuding? Why on earth would they even bother?

Oh well, that’ all for me this week. I will be back soon with magazine reviews, playlists, reviews and so much more. Later gators!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: 50-Minute Intervals with Matthew Sweet, Gaga, Taylor Swift & More

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Girlfriend” Ride (50 Minutes)

Matthew Sweet

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist was inspired after I heard Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend on the radio last week and my brain went “ahhhh” from happiness. I decided it would be the perfect warm-up song and created a 50-minute interval ride for indoor cycling that will work for any of your cardio needs. Hope you like it!

Let me know what you think of it and remember—I need song suggestions, always.

  • Girlfriend: Matthew Sweet

From the opening guitar riff right through all of the cool drum fills-this song seriously kicks butt and makes me want to work harder. Love, love, love, deeply love this song.

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

For all of you Pulp Fiction fans—the music “bed” here is Dick Dale’s Misirlou which gives it a retro cool kind of sound.

  • Can’t Hold Us: Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis

I love the consistent beat here and it always gets the class powered up to take it up a notch. (The video is a little strange but I kind of like it anyway.)

  • A Sky Full of Stars: Coldplay

The music and orchestration here are so lush and wonderful that I had to find out who produced it. Guess what? It’s co-produced by my favorite Swedish DJ Avicii!

  • Fly: Sugar Ray featuring Super Cat

It is basically impossible to NOT sing along to this tune from Sugar Ray which always reminds me of summer. Plus, I really do just want to fly.

  • Gold Guns Girls: Metric

Being the American superfan of this band brings a tremendous responsibility on my part where I must include them as often as possible in my playlists. You’re welcome!

  • Safe and Sound: Capital Cities

I like my bouncy fun dance pop tunes and this one fits the bill nicely.

  • Americano: Lady Gaga

Where did Lady Gaga go? I mean that seriously because I am happiest when she records pop tunes like this that have an edge.  Gaga, please come back when you are done touring with Tony Bennett!

(Also–can someone please find me the original video which included a cameo by Norman Reedus? Thanks!)

  • Style: Taylor Swift

This is my new favorite song and represents the first time Taylor Swift has been included in one of my playlists. Hello Taylor!

  • Hella Good No Doubt

I have an image from my friend’s wedding over ten years ago where they played this song at her reception and her grandparents boogied to Hella Good. (So much fun and the bass here is excellent!)

  • Shut Up and Dance: Walk the Moon

Every time I hear this song it reminds me so much of the kind of songs that would appear on 80s movie soundtracks. That’s meant to be a compliment.

  • Stars: Moby

This song is great for climbing or using the incline on the treadmill. Plus it features tons of stars including Corey Feldman whom Margo P. and talk about on our podcast here at this iTunes link.

  • Unknown Legend: Neil Young

This is my favorite song off of Neil Young’s Harvest Moon album and features background vocals (on the original album) from Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and Nicolette Larson so it generally just rules.

That’s it for me this time. Now go out there get your workout mojo on!

Until next time…

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Thank you for being patient with me while I took some time to be with my family and travel a bit. My father passed away on May 16th and we held his Memorial Service last weekend in Reno where he and mom retired to in 2003. In the 12 years he lived there my dad made such a positive impact on the community it was a packed house and I had the pleasure of meeting dozens of people who promise to carry on my father’s mission on community service and supporting local artists.

It was all so very sad yet inspiring and I am choosing to take his spirit with me as I face the challenges of my life in front of me.

My eating and workout habits have been sliding these last few weeks but I am now on track to get back to my healthiest state and create positive & happy memories in the future. Any advice on how to get back in the saddle of regular workouts because if so—please send them my way.

In the meantime—let’s get to this week’s news, notes, playlists and then on to my newest giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog co-host the “Book Vs. (Who doesn’t have a crush on James Spader, by the way?) Margo brings the extra advantage of having been from the Los Angeles area at the time of the filming so she gives some context on what it was really like on the Sunset Strip at the time.

We have the link below to listen and our next episode will continue with the 80s these—Field of Dreams. (Did you know the Kevin Costner classic was a book first? It was called Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella and boy did they make some changes between them!) Drop date for that episode to come soon.

We are planning our next few episodes so if there are any books & movies you want us to cover—feel free to comment below!

Brooklyn Fit Chick: “The Toughest Post I Have Written Yet”

Brooklyn Fit Chick

“The Most Difficult Post So Far”

Dad

Dad

Hey All.

Right now as I type this Blog post it is a beautiful (almost) summer day and I should be drinking tequila and hanging out with my friends for a Memorial Day bash.

Instead I am sipping wine with LOGO-TV’s Facts of Life marathon playing in the background trying to comprehend the last 10 days.

Last Saturday (May 16th) my mother called to tell me my father suddenly passed away. He was at a wood turner’s convention in Provo, Utah (an event he enjoyed for many years) when he did not show up for breakfast. His friends went to his room where they found him on the floor.

It took the coroner a few days to get back to us but he basically fainted, fell and hit his head. He died very quickly at the age of 74.

Funnily enough I had a conversation a few days before with a friend about how in life we show up alone and we leave this world the same way.

However, I would never imagine that for either one of my parents. They were always together, attached at the hip as they say. But that is exactly what happened to Dad—he was alone in his final moments.

After 50+ years Mom had to wait for a week to get his remains.

I was and remain in shock over this news. My father is just gone.

I will never hug him again or regale him with stories about annoying parents and their spoiled children who belong to my gym.

We won’t quote Mel Brooks movies or talk like Fredo from The Godfather (“I’m not stupid—I’m smaaaaart!”)

He will never send me “What’s App” videos with his favorite restaurants in Sparks, Nevada or his newest art works again.

Joe Donohue is no longer here.

It’s only been ten days and people tell me it gets worse before you ever feel like yourself. (If you ever really do.)

Friends have been amazing and kind at this time in my life.

I am raw, emotional, vacant, resigned, “stabby,” resilient and sanguine at any moment you try to reach out to me.

I have no idea if I am behaving properly.

A misdeed enrages me and a thoughtful note makes me weepy.

Yesterday I finally had to GET OUT and leave this apartment for more than an hour to go on with my annual pilgrimage to Far Rockaway, NY.

My bike "Trixie"

My bike “Trixie”

The bagel shop I bike out to is exactly 15 miles from my apartment and feels like a whole other world.

My father was from Far Rockaway and could not wait to leave when he graduated from high school. It’s never been clear to me why he hated it (and New York in general) so much but he has never had a sentimental attachment to this city.

Joe Donohue was open-minded and enjoyed (nay—revered) friendliness.

Far Rockaway is cloistered and remote. It’s filled with cops, fireman and teachers. It’s an Irish Catholic enclave that never made him feel “at home.”

He felt restricted there. My father who resembled every beat cop on Law and Order wanted to be around people who were curious about the world around them and did not decorate their homes with shamrocks and crosses.

“Marg—why do you want to go all the way out there?” he would ask me.

I would simply say “the Gil Hodges Bridge.”

Every single time I cross it on my bike “Trixie” (which you are technically NOT allowed to do) thrills me to bits.

Me—the total acrophobic who can’t even see someone on a ledge or watch a movie where heights are involved without getting nauseous will cross a bridge with a narrow passageway that is over traffic and has a small railing to keep you centered.

As I venture from Brooklyn into Queens I can see the ocean all around me. The city is fading behind and I can hear people on boats laughing on the Jamaica Bay.

Nothing else matters and all of my worries fade as I move one peddle stroke at a time with the wind in my face and the cars and city busses roaring below.

It makes zero sense that I find any of this pleasurable but there you go.

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Riis Park Beach (Far Rockaway)

Yesterday I had an image pop into my head as I peddled furiously to Led Zeppelin blasting in my ears.

It’s me at six years-old insisting my father teach me to ride a bike without training wheels.

He held the bike seat as I struggled to gain my balance and coordination. It was a failure and I became totally mad and frustrated with myself. (Basically me learning anything for the first time, by the way.)

How come all of the kids on Clinton Street can ride a two-wheeler and not me? I’m smart AND a tomboy! This should be like a duck taking to water.

Every day I struggled on my own after dinner until one day it just clicked. I got on that purple bike with the streamers and a banana seat while zipping around like a rock star.

Soon enough I went around the block with that BIG hill. It was the best feeling in the whole world!

Racing home I ran up the driveway and yelled for my dad to come out and watch me. He and my mom applauded as my inner bike goddess was roaring to life.

I still remember how proud he was of me and how he smelled when I gave him a tight hug.  (Soap and Old Spice, always.)

Now I must figure out a way to move about the world without him.

This is scary to me but as I crossed that bridge yesterday I knew this is something I am going to have to work out on my own.

I WILL figure it out someday.

That is certain.

Until then, I just need to keep my balance and keep peddling…

Until next time…

The Problem with T (& My Need for Self-Care)

Plus: Next “Book Vs Movie” Podcast “High Fidelity”

                                  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing? Normally I reply back “Great!” and keep the conversation but I am going to be honest with all of you. I have had serious health & behavioral issues with my cat that has caused a tremendous amount of anxiety in my life. I know how silly that sounds. “Oh, you have a sick cat? Who cares? Get over it and show her who is boss!”

But it is not that easy. My home life has been taken over by an animal that I completely adore but I am not sure I can take care of much longer.

Tennessee (T) came into my life a little over 3 years ago. She was a lost kitten found by the side of the road by a friend and I fell in love with her after seeing her in just one photo. (Yes, that adorable one above.)

She is a handful as cats go—very excitable, energetic, pushy and domineering. It’s what people either love or hate about her.

I love that she is a brat and doesn’t apologize for it. The apartment was ten times more fun the instant she showed up (though I am sure my other cat differs on this!)

A few weeks ago T had a traumatic experience in my apartment. I had left a pile of recyclables pile up in my hallway and she was playing around in them. I barely noticed when she climbed into a paper bag that was much too small for her. All of a sudden I heard a banging sound as she raced down the hallways and started shrieking for hours. T burst out of the bag thinking she was being smothered and I could not get her to calm down for the life of me.

Days later she seemed okay when all of a sudden she took to sudden bursts of anger aimed towards me. She would stalk me and hiss and snarl loudly at me—her eyes would go black. This would continue for hours with threats to swipe at my feet and attack my legs.

There is no pattern to these outbursts. She will be sweet & snugly one minute and then she her mean temper would return. She has cornered me in my office several times and will stalk back and forth between the kitchen and living room for hours.

After several days of this I finally had the Vet look her over and it was decided she will take Prozac and Xanax to help with her anxiety and trust issues. It’s only been a week but I am starting to get her medicine schedule together into a routine she seems to enjoy. I really hope this works out.

Living with her is like living with an alcoholic. I never know what I am going to expect hour to hour and can never really feel safe or happy when I am home. My whole life I have sought to have my own space where I feel safe and accepted. This problem with T has made me ignore my workouts schedule, cancel plans with friends and in general, interfered with my sanity.

My plan is to take care of T the best I can and hopefully the Prozac will help her moodiness and anxiety. If it doesn’t—it means I am going to have to re-home her. Let me say this again—I love this cat to pieces. However, I need to practice serious “self-care” as I take on her health and mind issues. My “go to” is to take on someone else’s problems and internalize them to the point it makes me ill. This is no ways to live a full life.

I will let you all know how it goes. (Think all of your good thoughts for my T and Sweet Sarah who puts up with way too much in this apartment!)

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

November 2014

Women’s Health Cover Star for November 2014:

Ashley Greene is on the cover and while I only know her from the Twilight films, in reality she has over 25 films to her credit and is also an ambassador for Oakley sunglasses which makes me incredibly jealous.  (Love those shades!)

Anyhoo-Ashely is stunning and has tons of beauty advice for those of us who want to look like a Hollywood starlet but are on a budget.

She keeps in shape by training with Jason Walsh of Rise Movement and prefers little rest between strength moves to keep her cardio up.

So what else is in the November issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Dynamic Duos”

The idea here is to match two exercises with one another two get maximum benefits and these moves from trainer Nick Rodocoy (whose Twitter photo is great) will help give muscle definition in record time.

15 Minute Workout 001

 Your Hidden Fitness Talent”

The key to increase your fitness level is to develop your proprioception.

What the hell is that?

Basically it’s the ability to get in tune with your sense of balance and coordination and therefore stay upright and balanced when your receptors are being challenged.

For example—working on your core strength can help you maintain your balance on an icy road and prevent you from slipping and falling.

The exercises featured here can help with developing that “sixth sense.”

Up Your Workouts 001

“Supermarket Stars”

Let’s be frank—most of us buy our food from the market. But that doesn’t mean that all of the packed foods on the shelves are full of garbage that will kill you.

Nay! Some of it is pretty damn good and good for you. Check out the winners in this issue.

Super Market Stars 001

“Slow Down to Power Up”

Yoga expert Kathryn Budig shows off some cool yoga moves that will help you relax this upcoming crazy holiday season.

Energizing Yoga 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “I Survived Being Kidnapped by My Taxi Driver” Holy crap! A true story of kidnapping and terror in Bali. YIKES!
  • ‘Sick Much?” “Virus-busting” strategies to keep you healthy from your nose-rubbing co-workers.

Overall Grade:

A  Some great workouts are featured here plus my beloved beauty stories are pretty fun to read.
