Sorry for the delay everyone. I did not realize how much time has gone by but between work (two jobs,) turning my hobbies into paying gigs (two podcasts) and travel– I have been terrible about keeping up my playlists. When I began teaching I would make the point to create a new one each week. Over time it has turned into maybe once per month that I can curate a new set of tunes that I feel good about.

One of my big lessons in teaching fitness is that quality trumps novelty anytime. Sure some people can churn out new and different with an almost alarming frequency but are they creating anything good? If the  list is contains only 20% good tunes—then who cares if it is all new?

Many of my old playlists (I keep them all on file cards like some kind of a spin maniac) embarrass the hell out of me. I am so much more thoughtful now as to what my students want to hear which is a variety of styles. By getting out of my own iPod and looking at other places to gain new music I have learned how amazing Pink, OneRepublic, Maroon 5 and Justin Timberlake really are. That 80s music (no matter how it makes me) is not everyone’s favorite genre. How amazing and inclusive it is to have all kinds of music represented in one hour and that produces happy students.

  • This is What We Came For: Calvin Harris with Rhianna

Welcome to the Brooklyn Fit Chick playlist Calvin! It only took you shading Taylor Swift on Instagram to get my attention! (Not really—you make great music and I should have included you ages ago.

 

  • Kid Icarus: Sam Roberts Band

Second songs on my playlist are sometimes the toughest one for me to figure out. They need to gain on the energy from the starter and help set the mood for the workout.  The Sam Roberts Band has lost of great tunes of you are not aware of them. Check them out!

 

  • Uprising: Muse

This song is a uniter not a divider. Everyone loves banging their heads along to this one!

 

  • I Don’t Feel Like Dancing: Scissor Sisters

This is my absolute top song for when I am in a bad mood. Elton John co-wrote which adds to its overall awesomeness.

 

  • No More Drama: Mary J Bloge

Everyone is powerless to this magical power ballad. I have seen straight white boys cheer along to it!

 

  • Tongue Tied: Group Love

I like the overall “boppiness” of this tune and yes, I did make that word up on the fly. You like?

 

  • Monkey Wrench: Foo Fighters

It would not be a Brooklyn Fit Chick ride without my beloved Foos.

 

  • Ride: twenty one pilots

I really enjoy this band but can someone please explain to me why they use all lower case letters in their names? (Coughs) affected (coughs, coughs.)

 

  • Keep the Car Running: Arcade Fire

This is one of the best songs to sprint to so why is it only 3 ½ minutes? Work on that Arcade Fire peeps!

 

  • Sexy Back: Justin Timberlake

A blast from the past and cannot believe it took me so damn long to bring it back.

 

  • Creep: TLC

Supposedly Lisa “Left Eye” Lopez (“Turn on channel 5—she’s burning the house down!”) hated this song as it seems to promote people cheating on one another. Thankfully they talked her into releasing it as it is the dopest jam.

 

  • Baby, You’re the World to Me: David Gray

Can someone please tell me what happened to David Gray? I miss hearing him on the radio!

 

  • Simple Man: Lynrd Skynrd

Never have three guitars dueling it out have sounded so down, dirty and amazing.

It’s been a while since I was given the chance to interview a fellow group fitness instructor when New York Sports Club told me that there was a Star Wars themed class in Brooklyn—I had to do find out the details. What is your name?

Where are you from?

I’m originally from Amherst, MA but have been living in Brooklyn, NY since 2001.

How many years have you been teaching?

I’ve been leading group exercise classes since 1994!

What classes do you teach for NYSC?

I teach BURN, Total Body Conditioning, Cardio Kickboxing, and a class based on the Star Wars movies called “Awaken Your Inner Force”.

What is the Star Wars Workout?

The workout came about after Disney/Lucasfilms contacted us at NYSC to develop a class based on the Star Wars movies. We bring elements like The Force, light sabers, and the athleticism of the Jedi into the fitness studio. We start class by tapping into “The Force” (which I would compare to energy or chi) with focused breathing and rhythmic dynamic movements. Then we do some light saber work including a face-off where the class is divided in two sections.

From here we move into 3 to 4 circuits that are time-based. Each circuit consists of 4 exercises. The first exercise incorporates the light saber such as the Chewbacca Chop. The second exercise is floor work using our own bodyweight as resistance and gliding discs such as the Padawan Push Up.

The third exercise is series of martial arts-based kicks. The fourth exercise in done for 90 seconds and it might be something like a Lightsaber Leap, Lightsaber Burpee, or Jedi Jacks. We actively recover from each high-intensity circuit by tapping back into The Force with focused breathing. To finish off the class we do Ab work with the lightsaber and then the Yoda Flow which is based on Tai Chi. The class was a lot of fun to develop!

How has the response been to it?

People love it and every class has been packed. The response has been so positive that we’ve extended the run of the class another two weeks at the New York clubs!

What is your favorite workout?
That is a really tough question to answer. I love strength training on my own because it’s almost meditative. It’s when I can completely focus on ME. I get to focus on how I want to strength and mold my body. It’s absolutely empowering. I also LOVE leading classes like cardio kickboxing and Total Body Conditioning because a lot of the time, I DO the classes with my class.

What is your advice to workout newbies to stay motivated?

Explore different workouts to see what YOU like. Find something that makes you feel fantastic physically and mentally. You want to find something that hooks you. Find something that you look forward to doing either because of how it makes you feel during or afterwards.

If you tend to stick to things when you have a “partner in crime” – find your workout partner, keep each other accountable and have fun with it.

If data is something that motivates you – the list of fitness apps and gadgets options is never ending. I’m a huge fan of the FitBit. For people who just want to up their activity level in the number of steps they take each day or week – you can create Challenges within the app with up to about 10 of your friends.

Simply cannot believe 2015 is coming to a close and while I am trying to make sense of a year which had far more “lows” than “highs” I wanted to take the time to say ‘”thank you.”  Thanks to every single one of my readers who check out my Blog and make comments. It is SO appreciated.

I discovered my voice while working on “Brooklyn Fit Chick.com” four years ago and have made some of the greatest friends in the whole world in the Blogosphere. I am looking forward to all of the new lessons you have to teach me in 2016 and hope I can make a positive impact in your life as well.

If nothing else—I promise to make you giggle from time to time!

As I get my last few posts written for 2015 allow me the chance to talk about a few news & notes going through my brain right now.

Book Vs Movie Podcast News:

Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and this past year we really kicked serious butt with the downloads. (As Homer Simpson would say—woo hoo!) And believe me when I tell you that hardly anyone I personally know (except for my mother) listens to us so that is pretty damn cool!

Our two top episodes so far are Gone Girl and The Outsiders. If you have any suggestions for us on your favorite book to movie adaptations, leave a comment below and/or at our Facebook Page. (We are always looking for ideas!)

In the meantime, here are our last two episodes talking about The Devil Wears Prada and Fried Green Tomatoes. (Our next one will be Waiting to Exhale and will come out in early January.)

Top Songs for 2015:

Many of you know already that I am a fitness instructor with a passion for putting together the “just right” playlist for each class. I feel as if it is my chance each hour to not only enable good health for a fellow human being but to also get to be a DJ with a captive audience. (I have some control issues to work out…)

My students know that if they want to treat me to a present at the holidays an iTunes gift card will do nicely. I post my personal playlists on this Blog as frequently as I can plus I create them for Fit Bottomed Girls with special themes ranging “Madonna vs. Lady Gaga” to Halloween.

This week I plan to post my picks for the top songs of 2015 and am curious which ones would be on your list? What new tunes did you really dig this year? Here is my handful to start:

Piriformis Trouble:

Last month I told you all that I was having hamstring issues from all of my years of cycling. Unfortunately it looks as if it is a little worse than that. In fact, my symptoms are indicating that I have Piriformis Syndrome which is (if I can be a little crude here) a pain in my butt. This occurs when the piriformis muscle compresses on your sciatic nerve causing a radiating pain down the leg.

It hurts when I sit or lie down for too long and getting out of bed in the morning (if I forget to sleep on a heating pad) is a chore.

Ibuprofen and my BelleCore Body Buffer are my new best friends.  I have been instructed to foam roll as often as a I can and to sit and roll on two lacrosse balls to undo that knot in my muscle twice per day. Icing it down helps a bit as well but every time I see wooden or metal chair my inside my inner voice says “oh sh*t!”

It makes me a bit grumpy to be slowed down in any way but I know that if I do things correctly now it will pay off in the long run. My question for y ’all is if any of you have been through this can you give me your best advice?  I am eager to try just about anything at this point. Thank you in advance!

You know how it is—Thanksgiving shows up out of nowhere and the next thing you know there are gifts to buy, breads to bake and multiple holiday cards to send. It’s a wonder I was able to sneak one in this past week but I did just that (patting herself on the back.)

The band’s PR rep got in touch with me via my work for Fit Bottomed Girls where I am compiling a peppy/upbeat playlist to post sometime in January.

Those of you who actually know me would not exactly call me “peppy” (spastic, yes but not peppy.) However, this song just got under my skin and I decided to use it in classes this past weekend and everyone loved it. So there you go!

 

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

For every class I teach I make sure  the “second” song is a butt kicker to get everyone in gear and to really get their collective heartrates up. This song might just be a wee bit too fast but, so what? It works!

 

  • Mass Romantic: The New Pornographers

One of my favorite Canadian bands really cooks with this playful tune that has a jangly sound. (I like me some jangle!)

 

  • Adventure of a Lifetime: Coldplay

I know there are Coldplay haters that exist in the world but I don’t give a rat’s butt about any of them. They know how to craft music  that will make you want to move and bop your head to the beat. #teamchrismartin

 

  • Lose Yourself: Eminem

True story—the gym’s stereo broke over this past weekend and I had to use a little boom box in a big room to teach my classes.  That in and of itself was bad enough, but having to play this amazing song by Eminem with a low volume almost killed me! You need volume to really raise the roof with this one. (Truth)

 

  • The Wolf: Mumford & Sons

Thee is nary a banjo in this one from the British band that really rocks it out here.

 

  • 2 Heads: Coleman Hell

Another Canadian (Thunder Bay, Ontario!) on my list and this one DOES indeed use a banjo with amazing results on his song here.

 

  • Can’t feel My Face: The Weeknd

ANOTHER Canadian (Toronto!) and this is his biggest hit in the U.S. so far. Just try to listen and move to the beat—it’s impossible!

 

  • Price Tag: Jessie J

I love this song because it mixes unbridled optimism with a fun /not-posh British accent.

 

  • Cannibal: Silversun Pickups

The Silversun Pickups write songs that are so hard charging and excellent that they are virtually all perfect for high speed sprints and intervals.

 

  • Please Don’t Leave Me: P!nk

Alecia Moore (P!nk’s real name!) writes some of the sweetest ear candy in the whole world and this romantic song always gets to me.

 

  • Time to Pretend: MGMT

Whatever happened to this band? Does anyone know?

 

  • Song for Someone: U2

Some people groused about getting a whole free album downloaded (for free!) into their iTunes accounts by one of the biggest bands of all time. (First world problems, people!) I on the other hand think it’s one of their best efforts and this song in particular is beautiful.

It’s a mixture of old and new tunes that I hope get you in the mood to work a little harder or will just make that workout more tolerable with some good music!

Just try to listen to this and NOT want to move your booty. It’s impossible!

 

  • Synchronicity I: The Police

This song has an old school 80s New Wave meets rock n’ roll feel that really helps to accelerate the mood and feeling in the room. Like THE perfect second song to play in any workout.

 

  • Worth It: Fifth Harmony

One of those tunes that always makes me want to sing along and declare my worth—which sky high, people!

 

  • Machinehead: Bush

If I have to pick a favorite decade for music it would have to be the 90s and this song reminds me of my younger days when I would play it at full blast while tooling around California.

 

  • You Get What You Give: New Radicals

The term “one hit wonder” has a negative connotation but how many people even have that great one hit even in them much less get to produce it? This song feels like it could be the perfect graduation day tune and always gives me the “happies.”

 

  • Diamonds: Rhianna

I am a little late to the Rhianna party but damn she makes some great music!

 

  • Wake Up Call: Maroon 5

The song is pretty darn great but the video that features my favorite heartthrob Jeremy Sisto—wow!

 

  • The Hand That Feeds: Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor knows how to write heart pumping techno meets heard rock music that will make you want to kick it into a higher gear.

 

  • First: Cold War Kids

I love this song for climbs using a ton of resistance or a big incline on the treadmill.

 

  • Hotline Bling: Drake

This is a song I literally cannot get out of my head. And when I use it in my classes my student bop their heads to the beat in the most adorable way. Priceless!

  • O.B: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

If you are looking for a fun, catchy tune to take on a few last sprints—try this one for sure. You will thank me later!

 

  • Empire State of Mind: Jay Z & Alicia Keys

Quite simple THE best song about New York ever though I admit that Billy Joel comes a close second.

 

  • All You Favorite Bands: Dawes

Love this for a cool down song and am grateful I teach in a dark spin room most of the time because when this gem from Dawes comes on over the speakers,  I get  super weepy.

I am so sorry for my lack of posting lately—this past month I have been very busy with new clients (thankfully,) tons of fitness events to cover for Fit Bottomed Girls (my homies,) a hamstring strain that has baffled me, a delivery service to try out (which was amazing,) playlists to put together (they do not create themselves) and miles to go before I sleep. (A literary reference but also the truth—I am having major sleep issues lately–grrr!)

Well I am back and ready to talk about my latest news and notes for you beautiful people. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and for the Halloween spooky season we decided to cover a couple of classics for horror fans. William March’s The Bad Seed and Thomas Harris’ The Silence of the Lambs which we are really proud of.

It’s funny how you do something just for the love of it and to release some creative energy out to the world and then you get pretty good at it! We produce, edit and promote every episode out of joy for books and movies and now we are getting thousands of downloads a month. Whoa!

(Does this sound like I am bragging?  I hope not! I’m just excited about our journey.)

Fitness Events a Plenty: I am the NYC reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls.com and because of that I get to attend many cool events and this past month has been some of my best yet. Such as…

TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch Event: Are you familiar with TomTom products? They have GPS systems on the market and are mainly based in Holland and Boston which I think is really cool for some crazy reason.

Well, they are now entering the world of fitness by creating GPS watches that will hold up to 500 MP3s, can sync with your playlists, count your steps and calories, offer coaching which you can use with Bluetooth headphones, help you train for marathons, cycling, swimming, the treadmill and more. Plus, it is waterproof!

You can read an early review of the TomTom Spark Cardio & Music GPS Fitness Watch from Backcountry.com and here is a look at it as it appears on my arm right now.  It sits right next to my Fitbit jewelry from my new client Bezels & Bytes and I plan to use both in my training for the new few months and will report on it soon.

The event included a super fun workout that I could participate in as my hamstring was bothering me so I took a picture of the room with my fellow fitness peeps and it turns out my Blogger buddy Nicole of Fitfulfocus.com was sitting on the floor in green tights right in front of me and I totally missed her! Brooks Running: I had three events in one night to go to and I was cranky, hungry and tired when I checked out the upcoming 2016/2017 collections for Brooks Running (THE running shoe brand I hear about most from my marathon loving peeps.) Loved everything I saw and begged for samples which hopefully I will get to try out soon for a gear roundup.

They had an artist at the event as well creating an artwork designed to honor NYC runners. They asked me what is my favorite part of the NYC marathon I told them it was cheering on all of the participants so they included it into the piece—see!

Hamstring Trouble: After years of cycling way too many miles and looking for every reason in the world to NOT take regular yoga classes I finally have a repetitive motion injury—a strained hamstring. People, I am in pain! For the last few weeks I have been icing and stretching it as best that I can but one day (in a pouty mood) I mention on Twitter my injury and the reps from BelleCore Body Buffer got in touch with me to try out their product to see if it could help me.

The Baby Belle Fit is an easy-to-handle massager that enhances stretching, soothes sore joints, warms up the muscles and help speed muscle recovery. I was a little dubious if it would work (you only need to use it for five minutes tops per muscle group) but guess what—it did help! I have been using it twice a day for the last week (morning and night) on my hamstrings and my IT band and am very happy with the results so far. I will discuss more in a future column talking about how to recover from injuries but for those of you creating a “wish list” for the holidays—this could be a dream gift for many of you!

All right gang—where on earth did this month go? October is arriving this week and I have not made Halloween plans or changed out my summer wardrobe yet. What gives?

Part of it must be the fact that it is still so darn hot on the east coast that it’s hard to remember that the current season is, in fact, autumn. (Which reminds me—I really need to get another bike ride in before I pack away those padded bikes shorts for the year…)

Anyhoo—I have a few things to discuss today from my groovy podcast to my “Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift” playlist. So let’s get to it, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes:

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we just recorded one of our best episodes yet—Like Water for Chocolate (swoon!) This was the first time I had read the novel from Laura Esquivel and found it very moving.

Magical realism is not my favorite genre of fiction (I am normally a more non-fiction kind of gal) but this tale took me to a whole other part of the world and created a universe that fascinated me.

The film (which for some reason was NOT nominated for a Best Foreign Language Film that year—sheesh!) is a sun-soaked delight that takes the audience on a journey of love, sadness and magic. Check out the player below if you want to hear our latest episode.

Next time we plan to discuss the 50s classic The Bad Seed from William March. (And after that we will tackle The Silence of the Lambs!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a NYC-based reporter for Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get to attend fun events and create the content that totally interests me. (Win/Win!) This past week I had two different articles posted and would love to get your feedback on them when you have a free moment.

1: 6 Bad Habits Fitness Instructors Wish Their Students Would Drop Now: This one was inspired by an experience I had recently with a student who habitually showed up late for my spin class. Let’s call her Sheila.

Sheila was a “problem child” for me due to the fact that she dropped in at least ten minutes late and then left early for every single class. Every. Single. One. Plus, she would space out during the ride and sit upright absorbed in her thoughts which distracted the students around her.

I would often hear after a ride ‘What is wrong with her? Why is she always late? Can you do anything about this because she is so distracting?!”

The problem is that she always arrived late and left early so when could I talk to her about this?

Then one morning she sauntered in 15-minutes late into the ride and just shrugged her shoulders at me. I had officially had enough and put my hand and said “Sorry but no, you are too late for this class.”

Sheila glared at me and left right away. Then she quit the gym for good. Suddenly my problem child had vanished and the overwhelming “thank goodness she is gone!” from her (former) fellow riders gave me the idea to write down the bad habits students can bring to class and why they need to stop it now.

2: My second feature is The Ultimate Katy Perry Vs Taylor Swift Playlist which I was inspired to create after continually reading about a big time beef that the two reigning pop divas seem to be in. Not a big backstory for this one but there you go…

Oh where oh where does the time go?  I don’t know about you but my August this year was very, very busy with work, teaching and a week-long visit from my mom (yay!) I had a wonderful time and as I type this post it is Labor Day which is one of those signpost holidays that signifies that summer will soon leave us.

Instead of being sad about letting my second favorite season (after autumn, of course) leave us until next year—I want to talk about some of the fun things I have been up to and am eager to hear how your summer has been unfolding. (Comment below!)

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of She’s Nacho Mama’s Blog and I co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) and we have just released two new episodes since we last “spoke.” First we uncover the 70’s classic Jaws (yes, it was a book first) and then we talked about Jurassic Park. I have embedded them below if you are interested in checking them out. Margo and I are planning out our fall schedule so if you have suggestions for us—mention them below in the comments!

 

Mom & I Meet a Wahlberg and it Was Wicked Fun: It’s been ages since my mother and I had some bonding time that didn’t include my family or siblings so I was thrilled when she decided to take an impromptu visit to New York. We had an amazing time including a visit to the Freedom Tower, taking in the latest production of The King and I (which is off the hook amazing,) strolled along the NYC Highline (which has a HUGE Lego exhibit) and finishing things off with a visit to Coney Island. (We really took the town!)

As luck would have it Mom and I arrived on the opening day of the Coney Island “Wahlburgers” which thrilled me to bits since I am a fan of the Wahlburgers Reality Show on A&E and love to try out a new burger joint when they pop up in my borough. Even though they had some kinks to work out with getting the burgers out in a timely fashion (the line went out the door!) it was still fun to watch Paul Wahlberg come out and greet fans. He is the brother of two famous Wahlbergs (actors Donnie and Mark) and the hardworking dude was so focused on his business that we saw him actually going out to clean the windows of the establishment (no slacker, he.)

If you are in Coney Island I say check them out and NOT Nathan’s Famous hot dog joint which has been around forever and is an institution but the quality I am sad to say has greatly declined over the years.

Fit Bottomed Girls Articles: I am a proud NYC team member of the Fit Bottomed Girls which means I get invited to some nifty events from time to time. Recently I was given the opportunity to see the New Balance Spring & Fall 2016 collection for women and let’s just say I am swooning for some of these items. See them for yourself!

 

Did you know that New Balance hosts Girls Night Out events around the country? Basically, it’s a chance to work with a local fitness star and then socialize with your new fitness BFFs and I am definitely checking that out as soon as I can. Have you ever been to one?

And just to make you a little jealous of me—check out this wicked cute goodie bag I got from the event that was filled with New Balance gear—score!

 

Lolë White Tour: OMG—this was just about my favorite event I have attended in Central Park. Canadian yoga gear company Lolë is hosting events in both the U.S. and Canada wherein thousands of participants clad in all-white gear (to symbolize peace) practice yoga with top instructors in a show of togetherness and tranquility.

Now—anyone who knows me will tell you I am usually clad in dark colors as I feel with my size and complexion it is more flattering for me.

However, Lolë offered journalists their gear to wear to the event so off I went and you can see some of the amazing footage at this link from the event.

The best part? In one of the segments of the evening practice I was taught by yoga master Rodney Yee who is just about one of my favorites of all time. His Yoga for Beginners DVD is one of my “go-to” workouts when my hip flexors are really tight. I have a few images from that event as well.

Health Cover Star for September:

Chicago P.D. star Sophia Bush is on the cover and though I haven’t caught that show yet I remember her from One Tree Hill from over ten years ago.  AND I can mention actually getting to meet her then because of my job with YM magazine (a now much-missed teen publication) at the time.

Anyway, Sophia is 33 now and credits her 10-minute morning meditation to keeping her sane and even recommends an app called “Headspace” to help with this which I downloaded right away. (It’s neat!)

She lost her ex-boyfriend Google executive Dan Fredinburg when he trekked to Mount Everest and there was an earthquake during his climb. This experience has been completely devastating for Sophia and made her realize how precious life is.

Sophia relies on the aforementioned meditation and her morning 2-mile runs to keep centered.

Apropos of nothing else I really love the Alexander Wang dress she is wearing on the cover…

  • “Your Memory: A User’s Manual” It is my goal to improve my ability to memorize and remember things. (Like knowing exactly when my mother is planning to visit which I screwed up by 24 hours this morning. True story!) I found that these pages give great tips on how to do just that. (Yes, I will work to apply them.)
  • “60 Beauty Breakthroughs” I love me some beauty stories and here we have new products for skin care, body lotions, make-up, nail colors and hair care. Love!
  • “5 Reasons You’re Always Hungry” I used to have a ravenous appetite after starting a new diet and would want to just eat non-stop. Anyhoo—if you have that issue they have advice here on how to stop the munchies from taking over your life.
  • “9 Probiotic Foods You Have to Try” Included here are Kvass, sauerkraut, kefir and my sister’s favorite thing in the world—kombucha!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I like Madonna fine. She’s great and is far braver and more hardworking than I am for sure. However, I get in trouble sometimes with my friends who are Madge super fans when I explain that some of her music is just so damn stinky. (Remember True Blue or the dreadful remake of American Pie? No. Thank You.)

I put Madonna’s music into my personal “Law of the Thirds” (The Doors and The Red Hot Chili Peppers are also in this category for me.)

{Margo’s Law of the Thirds = Artists whose creative output is 1/3 brilliant, 1/3 ordinary and 1/3 garbage.}

The Madonna songs I hate drive me insane but her top work (Like a Prayer, Take a Bow, Music and in particular Ray of Light bring indescribable joy into my life. Her high efforts are so damn amazing that I wanted to start of a playlist with my favorite version of my favorite song by Madonna to prove I am not a hater. (Really!)

The rest are a mixture of older and new tunes that make a perfect interval workout playlist (in my not so humble opinion.)

Not familiar with Green Day’s “garage band side project?”  Well now is the perfect time to check out this video and tell me what you think. I like that it is high energy and feels very madcap.

 

  • Get the Party Started: P!nk

Linda Perry (of 4 Non Blondes fame) is one of the top songwriters and record producers in the business and she wrote this fun tune for P!nk.

 

  • Ship to Wreck: Florence + The Machine

This new song by Florence + The Machine is my new favorite for speed drills and in my regular life as well. It cooks!

 

  • Connected: Stereo MCs

This British band wrote some fun dance tunes back in the early 90s and this one in particular is my favorite when I want to use a heavy resistance climb.

 

  • Walk: Foo Fighters

I love me some Foos in my workouts and this song makes me want to workout harder and then get weepy afterwards at the same time. Pay attention to the lyrics here because they will help you get overcome any fears you may be dealing with in your life.

 

  • Hollaback Girl: Gwen Stefani

The “dirty’ version is more fun to play out loud in class but I will leave that decision up to you.

 

  • Firestarter: The Prodigy

Some people are scared off by The Prodigy’s look but I have to say when I put this on for sprints my students just book it on their bikes.

 

  • Monkey Tree: Mother Mother

This song is from a Canadian indie band because y’all know how much I love my Canadians!

 

  • Crabbuckit: K-Os

Speaking of Canadians–my favorite Canuck Hip Hop artist is K-Os and this is his best song ever.

 

  • Love Runs Out: OneRepublic

Love, love, love playing this in my classes. People just bop their heads to the music which amuses me greatly.

 

  • Ring of Fire: Social Distortion

My favorite cover of a Johnny Cash song by one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. Period.

 

  • The Drugs Don’t Work: The Verve

I love ending a class with a mellow rock ballad and this is 90s songwriting at its finest.
