Shape Cover Star for January/February 2015:

Jada Pinkett Smith (Gotham) who is in phenomenal shape and is my new inspiration to not slack off on my workouts this winter. The badass actress has a “hit it & quit it” attitude with the gym with just 30 minutes of cardio per session followed by a quick strength-training sequence that emphasizes high reps versus heavy weights.

You can check out some of Jada’s favorite moves inside the magazine, take a look!

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“The Journey After the Journey”

What a delight it is to see my blogger buddy Brooke Birmingham inside Shape magazine! Brooke is just about the loveliest person you can ever meet which makes her amazing enough on its own. On top of that she lost 172 pounds through diet and exercise.

Brooke is in a round table discussion/article with other five other women who have lost a significant amount of weight (Dacia Root, Francelina Morillo, Ashley Donahoo and Heather McNally) and they talk openly about the wonderful and stressful changes that have happened since they began their weight loss journey. Very inspiring!

“Dance Off the Inches”

I am a terrible dancer, like “Elaine from Seinfeld” bad , but I appreciate those who can do it well (like trainer Anna Kaiser of AKT in Motion studios) who demonstrates a few dancy/strength moves you can do on your own.

Do Anywhere workout 001

“8-Minute Fat Blast”

Do you Tabata?  Beacuse if you do and you are looking for a new workout—try this one from Kathy Glabicky of Tread Tabata which you can do in record time. She uses a combination of treadmill and Plyo moves so take this page with you to the gym.

“Slope Style”

Skiing is not my thing but something about ski gear says “yes” to me.

Slope Style 001

“Hello, New Body”

The Biggest Loser was very smart to hire Jennifer Widerstrom because she is a kick ass trainer who wants women to aspire to be strong and not skinny. Here she gives her own, personal four week plan to get you in great shape without crazy equipment needs or a big time suck.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:

  • “Winter Sports Special” Shape looks into skiing and snowboarding and offers advice for beginners.
  • Camille LeBlanc Bazinet: The 2014 CrossFit champ offers her best advice on how you can reach your fitness goals.

Overall Grade:

A The January/February issues has some of the best workouts I have seen in a while. Plus, they were smart enough to feature Brooke Birmingham!

  • Women’s Health Magazine “Next Fitness Star” Emily Schromm: This week’s giveaway (that three of you out there will be lucky enough to win, by the way) is a workout DVD from this year’s winner of the Women’s Health—former Real World alum Emily Schromm. Emily was in the Washington DC season which I did not catch so I couldn’t ask her anything about it. Instead I was lucky enough to ask her questions about health and fitness which is what I really do care about. Here it is!
Emily Schromm

Emily Schromm

Brooklyn Fit Chick Interview with Trainer Emily Schromm:

Who are your fitness heroes?

My fitness heroes have always been those badass women who never took no for an answer: Michelle Akers and Mia Hamm, my soccer idols. And Jackie Joyner Kersee, one of the greatest runners of all time who never let asthma stop her. I love seeing people go after what they love to do. That is so heroic to me.

What is your quick “go to” workout when you are crunched for time?

My FAVORITE go-to hotel workout is pairing stair runs with squats! For 15 minutes, I run up the stairs, do 10 squats, jog/waddle back down. If there are no stairs, I set a timer and for one minute do burpees, one minute rest for 5-10 rounds total.  It doesn’t take long until you are in a sweat and those arms are burning.

What is your favorite post workout snack?

I love mixing my whey protein powder with coconut water immediately after a workout. It immediately starts replenishing those muscles to make them stronger, because that is what BURNS fat, and keeps me from feeling sore the next day which then means I can get after it again!

What is your next fitness goal?

My next fitness goal is to make Regionals for The CrossFit Games, to finish my book Bacon and Skinny Jeans, and to continue to help change people’s lives through proper nutrition and exercise.

(Thank you Emily!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

Now here is some more information about Learning to Breathe Fire:

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness

BY J. C. HERZ

A fascinating account of CrossFit’s origins, explosive grassroots growth, and emergence as a global phenomenon

When it comes to CrossFit, observers of the red-hot workout regimen tend to fall into two camps: true believers and those who can’t imagine what would possess someone to push that hard. Or, as journalist J. C. Herz puts it, for some people it’s a “lightning bolt: this is what I’ve been searching for. The rest think it’s a sign of mental illness.”

But there’s no denying that CrossFit has recently exploded in popularity, and become one of the world’s most fascinating sports subcultures. Today there are over 7,000 CrossFit gyms (or “boxes”) in dozens of countries, and millions of devoted participants—including elite special forces and first responders, along with plenty of regular Joes and Janes. In her new book, LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness (Crown Archetype; $25.00; On Sale June 3, 2014), Herz delves deep into this “insane fitness cult,” vividly bringing it to life. In rich and riveting detail, she explores the science behind why CrossFit works, as well as the people who champion it and the fierce spirit that fuels them.

Herz traces CrossFit’s rise from a single underground gym in Santa Cruz to a global movement, going behind the scenes with the founders, star competitors, and everyday enthusiasts whose lives have been transformed by the training. Fusing action-packed sportswriting with riveting psychological profiles, she introduces readers to unforgettable characters such as CrossFit founder Greg Glassman, never-say-die Masters competitor Jerry Hill, and two-time Games champion Annie Thorisdottir—recently dubbed “the fittest woman on the planet” by Vogue. The characters in LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE run the gamut from surfer chicks to Navy SEALS. But they share an underlying ethos: they are willing to seek and endure discomfort, and their intense physical trials forge powerful group bonds. In the CrossFit parlance, “It never gets easier. You just get stronger.”

Modern-day stoicism, the ability to endure unpredictable adversity, is the key to CrossFit’s transformative power. Herz explains that traditional gym equipment, like the Stairmaster and the elliptical, is designed for minimally taxing, low-intensity, and passive exercise. By contrast, CrossFit workouts—called WODs (Workouts of the Day)—are known for their variety and intensity. They combine many different fitness elements, including gymnastics, sprints, and weightlifting, in an ever-changing fashion, forcing the body to adapt. Think of a WOD as a timed obstacle course meant to mimic what any of us might be called on to do in an emergency situation. The results are concrete and measurable, as CrossFitters find themselves doing things they never dreamed of being able to do, whether it’s a single pull-up or a 15-foot rope climb.

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE also takes readers inside the excitement and drama of the annual CrossFit Games, which began as an informal throwdown on a California ranch and has evolved into a televised global event—a veritable Olympics of fitness. Designed to be a true test of human physical capacity, the Games are filled with competition, camaraderie, and superhuman feats of strength and endurance. Herz taps in to that fervor, chronicling the grueling challenges and spotlighting elite athletes as they battle it out in the arena.

As the Games demonstrate, CrossFit draws heavily on ancient forms of athletic ritual. It taps into the primal human experience and the power of the pack. We are geared to form tribes and spring into action as “first responders.” The experience of pushing our physical limits connects us to ancient hunters and warriors. In LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE, Herz brilliantly connects the old and the new.

Got that?

  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win Learning to Breathe Fire from @jcherz and @brooklynfitchik”

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway: “Strong is the New Skinny” by Jennifer Cohen 11

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway!

Strong is the New Skinny by Jennifer Cohen

You can win a copy of this book!

You can win a copy of this book!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So are you ready to win something fun today?  I am so excited to present this week’s giveaway–Strong is the New Skinny by Jennifer Cohen which will be released by Harmony Books in September. That’s right—you can actually win a copy of this excellent book a whole month earlier than anyone else. Actually—two of you out there will win a copy. Score!

(Harmony Books will provide the books to each winner directly and did not pay for this post.)

Here are the main details:

Health and wellness expert Jennifer Cohen is ready to change the conversation about women’s fitness. Thanks to a long overdue cultural shift, women are no longer interested in starving themselves to be rail thin. Instead they want to look and feel strong. Women are increasingly turning to hard-core training regimens like CrossFit, Tough Mudder, and P90X, over kinder, gentler yoga and Pilates workouts. Instead of eating like rabbits, they want to eat like cheetahs and use food as fuel. Forget damsels in distress—women want to be superheroes. Strong is sexy. Strong is powerful. And best of all, strong is achievable.

In her new book with Stacey Colino, STRONG IS THE NEW SKINNY: How to Eat, Live, and Move to Maximize Your Power (Harmony Books; Trade Paperback Original; On Sale September 16, 2014), Jennifer Cohen lays out a multipronged plan to help readers become strong from the inside out—nutritionally, physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Their message is both clear and empowering: it’s time to embrace what your body can do, not just how it looks.

Whether you’re just getting started or training for a physical challenge, STRONG IS THE NEW SKINNY gives you all the tools you need to become leaner, fitter, and stronger. It offers a reality-based diet, lifestyle, and fitness program (the “SINS” plan, for short) so you can:

  • Maximize your potential, as well as your energy, vitality, and power.
  • Strengthen your arms, back, core, and legs—and crank up the difficulty when you’re ready.
  • Train for a challenge by learning how to climb ropes, do box jumps, and do a perfect pull-up.
  • Torch fat with a series of heart-healthy workouts that take as little as ten minutes.
  • Kick-start your body with the Strong Seven—seven days of seven power foods.

Jennifer Cohen is a trainer, writer, studio owner, and successful health and fitness entrepreneur. A regular contributor to Health.com and Forbes, she is also the fitness ambassador for Weight Watchers and has a series of bestselling DVDs with them. She has developed fitness programs for leading health clubs, and works with celebrities and top executives to incorporate fitness and nutrition into their lives. Stacey Colino is an award-winning writer specializing in health, fitness, and psychology, and a certified group exercise instructor and Spinning instructor.

If you want to win this book (remember, there are TWO winners this week) you must do the following: (Continental United States, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win Strong is the New Skinny @therealjencohen and @brooklynfitchik”
  • If you haven’t already—let me know you are subscribing to my You Tube channel

I will pick two winner as at random on Tuesday, August 12th at NOON Eastern Time and contact them directly. Harmony Books will send the books to each winner and did not pay for this post.

Good luck and enter as often as you like!

What Did We Learn This Month? @Shape_Magazine Kate Hudson on the Cover 5

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Shape: November 2013

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Kate Hudson photographed by Nino Munoz

Shape Cover Star for November:

A friend of a friend of mine met Kate Hudson once a few years before her breakout performance in the Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous and said Kate was absolutely the sweetest, most down-to-earth person ever.  I always think about that when I read interviews with the actress as she seems like she would be a cool, chill BFF.

Kate is the mother of two young boys, engaged to singer Matt Bellamy of Muse and has her own workout line Fabletics hitting the market. Meaning she doesn’t exactly have all of the time in the world to work out. Luckily the actress has a dancing background and fits in as much Pilates as she can into her busy schedule.

“Drop the Weights”

You don’t need a set of dumbbells to work your muscles—try some of these moves from trainer Jessica Rucker.

What Did We Learn This Month?

 SELF: October 2013

For those of you keeping score, I “broke up” with SELF magazine a few months ago and all of my reasons were stated in my “cri de coer” post this past September. After being a loyal reader for many years I felt that the new look and editorial was aiming too young and low brow. That they were reaching so far to appeal to 20-somethings that they forget about their core reader loves health & fitness and wants to add to their knowledge base.

Well I have to admit that the October issue is a vast improvement upon the last few issues (I have not reviewed SELF since May) and I am happy to feature them on my Blog. Woo hoo! Now, keep it up SELF! Don’t make me shun you again!

SELF Cover Star for October:

Lucy Hale

I have NO idea who she is but for some reason I follow actress Lucy Hale on Instagram. (She seems totally cool and adorable by the way.)  Lucy’s trainer (Bryna Carracino) keeps the Pretty Little Liars star in shape with a series of “static holds” which you can see below. Her personal record for a chaturanga is two minutes seven seconds which is pretty damn impressive!

So What Else is in the October SELF?

“I Have a Strong, Athletic Body. I Wish I Loved It”

Here we get an essay from badass squash champion Ivy Pochoda who works hard to stay in shape but gets rude comments about her “mannish” legs. I want to give her a hug and let her know she is a phenomenal woman and not to give in to the body-shaming haters. (Screw them! You are awesome & fierce!)

“Master Class”

CrossFit Coach Megan May shows how to perform a righteous dead lift.

“Shopping Special”

SELF started the whole “pink ribbon” campaign for breast cancer awareness many moons ago and every October they feature “pink” items that will benefit cancer charities. So get to shopping!

“Trainer to Go”

World class trainer David Kirsch shows a few different exercises you can do in a plank position. (Plan on using these in my core classes soon!)

“How Did I Workout Without This?”

Awesome “high-tech gear” that pro football players use are featured on this page and that makes me happy. (Because I love football. Go Niners!)

“23 Minutes”

Say you truly only have a half hour at the gym to workout—these moves from Sean Begley of Plus One Fitness will help you get your sweat on in a minimum amount of time.

The Rest of the Best of the October SELF:

  • “Fat Talk. Old Talk” Recently I have been thinking more about the “O” word and how much I hate it when people my age or much younger use it to describe themselves. Nice to read an article about I from someone far more eloquent than me! (Writer is Erin Bried)
  • “Do I Really Have to Stop Eating Bacon?” Good god I hope not! In the October issue we get “Women’s Cancer Handbook” which talks about which “bad habits” you need to nix to ward off disease.

Overall Grade:

B Big improvement over the last few months and I tore out many pages to keep on file which is always a good sign.

What Did We Learn This Month?

Recaps of Bicycling, More and Muscle & Fitness Hers

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

We are right in the middle of summer here and I am experiencing magazine doldrums here. Most produce July/August issues so it might be a little light on the review and recap side on my blog for the next couple of weeks. (Oh when do those September issues arrive already?)

Anyhoo—I did find a few that I enjoyed this month so let’s just dive into them today and have some fun, shall we?

Bicycling Sept 001

Bicycling: September 2013

  • “Sugar Shock” According to the New York Times food editor Matt Bittman sugar being added to our foods is “the biggest public health challenge facing the developed world.”  Bicycling magazine talks about how the sweet stuff will affect your rides and how to keep an eye on sugar and carbs.
  • “Take a Look” Loved this photo spread here which features cute bicycling fashions.  (Yes, they CAN be cute fashion creators!)
  • “City Guide: New York City” Now you know I have check out the “Brooklyn Ramble” section which featured in this article!
  • “Southern Comforts” Have you ever heard of the “Tour d’Epicure” which takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains? It sounds totally amazing!
  • “The Basics of Shifting” Honestly, I wish someone would have given me this advice on how to shift into gears properly when I first began to ride!

MORE: July/August 2013

  • Charlotte Rampling: One of my biggest style icons talks about dancing in Mary Quant skirts (sigh!) in the 60s and her “not getting married” code of freedom. (LOVE this woman!)
  • “Foods that Age-Proof Your Brain” The things you need to eat and drink every day in order to stay mentally sharp.
  • Melissa McCarthy: Have any of you seen The Heat yet? I need to check it out but loved this interview with the actress in the meantime.
  • “Summer of Self-Discovery” If you are looking for books to dive into this summer—this article had some great ideas!
  • “She Got Rich Doing What?” MORE features incredible women who have made their bones doing everything from creating stylish fanny packs to making theater backdrops. Go Ladies!

Muscle and Fitness Hers 001

Muscle & Fitness Hers: July/August 2013

  • “Must-Try Move…Great Glutes” Advice on how to make your backside higher and tighter from Nathalia Melo (IFBB Bikini Pro,) Essence Monet (IFBB Figure Pro) and Bella Falconi (Fitness Model.)
  • Terry Crews: The smoking hot actor from HBO’s The Newsroom talks about his fitness motivators and the secrets to his 24-year marriage. (Does he have a brother?)
  • “Shortcut to Amazing Abs” Excellent moves from IFBB Bikini Pro Talia Terese.
  • “8-Minute Metabolism Booster” Five different moves from Icelandic CrossFit star Annie Thorisdottir.
  • Rutina Wesley: Tara from True Blood is played by an actress with arms I am working my tail off to get. Rutina avoids sugar and junk food when filming her sexy vampire series.

That’s all for me today. Let me know what you are reading this month!

Until next time!
