What Did We Learn This Month?

 Fitness

January 2015

Who Is on the Cover of Fitness this Month?

Former Disney Teen Queen Demi Lovato who is about the most accomplished 22-year old I have ever read about in my entire life. Demi is on the road right now with a hyper successful singing career, is the brand ambassador for Sketchers, and has her own skin care line called “Devonne” by Demi. Oh AND she has her own line of hair extensions called Secret Color. (Whew!)

A few years ago things were not looking too good for Demi. Hospitalized for bipolar disorder and bulimia the young star was struggling with mental illness and her self-image. Thankfully she is on something of a health kick with exercise and clean eating being a priority for maintaining her positive mindset.

In her interview with Fitness Demi talks about her favorite workout tunes, how she motivates herself to get a sweat session going wn hen her motivation is low plus her advice for other young women struggling with personal issues.

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

“Hot Arms & Abs”

This quickie workout from Barry’s Bootcamp trainer Noah Neiman will help you strengthen and tone your bod in record time.

“Hot Stuff: The Goods We’re Obsessing Over Now ”

Fitness editors chose a whole page of the cutest fitness gear I can imagine. They all give me the “I wants!”

Fitness Better Body Plan”

I love this workout from BFX Studio which uses their EMOM (Every Minute on the Minute) intervals. You can get a video to download onto your iPad by going to www.fitnessmagazine.com/digitalnow.

Better Body plan 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Stroke Your Metabolism” The Rowing machine is the new “hip” cardio workout to hit the gym and this sample workout will help you burn up to 500 calories an hour.
  • “On the Road to Diabetes?” Diabetes has affected far more friends and family members than I can count so I really want to get the word out there on what people need to look out for to stay healthy. This article highlights that diabetes can hit healthy & fit people as well so be on the lookout for the symptoms and just ditch the cheap sugar habit, people!

Overall Grade:

A- A few really good workouts and smart health stories always make me happy and the January issue did just that!.

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Women’s Health

November 2014

Ashley Greene photographed by Tom Schirmacher

Ashley Greene photographed by Tom Schirmacher

Women’s Health Cover Star for November 2014:

Ashley Greene is on the cover and while I only know her from the Twilight films, in reality she has over 25 films to her credit and is also an ambassador for Oakley sunglasses which makes me incredibly jealous.  (Love those shades!)

Anyhoo-Ashely is stunning and has tons of beauty advice for those of us who want to look like a Hollywood starlet but are on a budget.

She keeps in shape by training with Jason Walsh of Rise Movement and prefers little rest between strength moves to keep her cardio up.

So what else is in the November issue of Women’s Health

15-Minute Workout “Dynamic Duos”

The idea here is to match two exercises with one another two get maximum benefits and these moves from trainer Nick Rodocoy (whose Twitter photo is great) will help give muscle definition in record time.

15 Minute Workout 001

 Your Hidden Fitness Talent”

The key to increase your fitness level is to develop your proprioception.

What the hell is that?

Basically it’s the ability to get in tune with your sense of balance and coordination and therefore stay upright and balanced when your receptors are being challenged.

For example—working on your core strength can help you maintain your balance on an icy road and prevent you from slipping and falling.

The exercises featured here can help with developing that “sixth sense.”

Up Your Workouts 001

“Supermarket Stars”

Let’s be frank—most of us buy our food from the market. But that doesn’t mean that all of the packed foods on the shelves are full of garbage that will kill you.

Nay! Some of it is pretty damn good and good for you. Check out the winners in this issue.

Super Market Stars 001

“Slow Down to Power Up”

Yoga expert Kathryn Budig shows off some cool yoga moves that will help you relax this upcoming crazy holiday season.

Energizing Yoga 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Women’s Health:

  • “I Survived Being Kidnapped by My Taxi Driver” Holy crap! A true story of kidnapping and terror in Bali. YIKES!
  • ‘Sick Much?” “Virus-busting” strategies to keep you healthy from your nose-rubbing co-workers.

Overall Grade:

A  Some great workouts are featured here plus my beloved beauty stories are pretty fun to read.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 97: The New SELF Magazine, Twitter Chats, Hot Yoga Tips & “Green Smoothie’ eBook Giveaway

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #97

Tips for Your First Hot Yoga Class, the New Look of SELF, Book Vs Movie Twitter Chat

Plus: Skinny Green Smoothies eBook Giveaway!

You can win this eBook!

You can win this eBook!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week I want to talk about “Hot Yoga Tips,” SELF magazine’s new direction, my first Twitter chat and a cool smoothie eBook that you can win today. Let’s get to it!

  • Hot Yoga Tips Fit Bottomed Girls: I attended my first hot yoga class last year at Modo Yoga NYC and loved how much longer and leaner I felt afterwards. (Though the heat is murder on my frizz-tastic hair!) Anyhoo—the experience gave me the inspiration to write Tips for Your First Hot Yoga Class for Fit Bottomed Girls and I appreciate any Tweets and shares y’all can give me for it. (Thanks in advance!)
  • The New Look of SELF: Last March the editor in chief of SELF was fired which was unpleasant for everyone involved. So the folks at Condé Nast decided that their only fitness-centric pub should go in a whole new direction with former Cosmopolitan Executive Joyce Chang. Chang does not have a health/fitness editorial background so she has given SELF a makeover which you can read about at Fashionista, Jezebel and BET. The October issue features a beautiful model on the cover (Joan Smalls) as they celebrate “The Best Bodies in the World.” It’s very—um, fashion-centric and certainly a glammed-up version of SELF. It looks gorgeous which is a HUGE improvement upon the look of the magazine in the last year which was dog sh*t.

(However, I am reserving judgment on whether I will return to reviewing them monthly (I gave up last November as the editorial went down the “20-something only” crap hole) because this issue is a little too frou-frou and chic for my personal taste. Perhaps Joyce Chang just wants to show her classier direction and will incorporate more workouts in the future issues? I hope so but will wait until the next month before I make my decision. Good luck SELF—you look a HELL OF A LOT better. Now bring on more fitness articles!)

  • Book vs. Movie Twitter Chat: I participated in my very first Twitter chat this week in support of the Book vs. Movie podcast and it was about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on! (I won’t swear I went braless…) The best part of the chat (which you can follow here) was getting suggestions from the Twitter peeps on the books that have been adapted to film that we should cover. Now—let me be clear—no way do I plan to read Great Expectations. But the other suggestions were pretty amazing. SO—if you have been reading all of these bullet points diligently and have not just scanned them—please give me some suggestions below in the comments on what books YOU want Margo P. and me to cover in the future. We are pretty open-minded so fire away! Oh, and we have our own twitter handle so follow us @bookversusmovie Namaste!
  • My newest giveaway! Author Beth Wareham is an eBook expert and a green smoothie fanatic who writes e-mails that make me snort through my nose and laugh like a hyena. This week she is offering one of her Skinny Green Smoothie eBooks as a giveaway to one of you lucky people. And because it is an eBook I can offer it worldwide! YES! If you have a Kindle or something electronic-ish to read things—you can win this book.

Now onto this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

More Information about Skinny Green Smoothies by Beth Wareham:

SKINNY GREEN SMOOTHIES

By Beth Wareham

“Skinny Green Smoothies” takes smoothie love to a new level using cook’s tricks to create new, deeply satisfying smoothies. We use centuries of flavor pairings as well as new ingredients to make these healthy “milk shakes’ truly sing.

Don’t whirl a smoothie that tastes of front lawn. Here, you’ll discover new ways to get essential nutrients and fatty acids into your body, turning on fat-burning DNA and creating a skinnier, more radiant you. Add sparkling waters, flavored teas, herbal infusions, fresh herbs, toasted seeds and nuts, and spices heated for 30 seconds in a dry pan that come alive and fragrant in a way you’ve never tasted. You can choose your smoothie ingredients based on your health needs on any given day – the information on health is all here – as well as create a drink you truly savor.

Approach “Back-to-School” and cold and flu season? Try the “Almost Every Citrus Green Smoothie” where citrus and spinach together help you absorb more Vitamin C than most any other food you have ever eaten. Been out too late last night? What about the “Grapefruit Parsley Detox Green Smoothie” to chase that sluggish feeling away? Need a new flavor in your Skinny Green Smoothie arsenal? Try “Sparkling Cherry Thyme Green Smoothie” for a new tingle on the tongue. That taxing morning at the office needs a good “Coconut Load Green Smoothie” to get you through.

Besides the convenience for adults, green smoothies are perfect to get vegetables and fruits into those smaller bellies – our kids. Growing developing bodies need lots of nutrients and one of the best gifts you can give your children is good food. No, he or she won’t eat those brussel sprouts but set a “Chocolate Peanut Butter Green Smoothie” down in front of them and you may have a different story.

Convenient, versatile, simple and quick, Skinny Green Smoothies will help you stop cravings and lose weight, clear your skin and head and give you the energy you need to seize the day.”

{Just a note—Beth Wareham is not sponsoring this post and will contact the winner directly and set them up with their eBook.}

Shape Cover Star for October 2014:

One of Howard Stern’s favorite guests is TV personality Maria Menounos who has a fun spirit and a seriously goofy laugh (I mean that in a good way.)

When Maria was in college she gained almost 40 pounds trying to out-eat most of her dude friends (dude friends are always dangerous, by the way) and now she keeps fit with a sane workout schedule and healthy eating habits.

Maria has a new book out called The Everygirl’s Guide to Diet and Fitness and you can catch her in full “band workout” mode inside the magazine.

What else is in this issue of Shape?

“Form Check: The Squat”

As a trainer I can tell you that if there is one move we observe  to check out the fitness level of a potential client—it’s the squat. I really loved this description on what to look for in a proper squat by Brent Brookbush, D.P.T.

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

“A Petite Powerhouse”

Our cover star is Kathleen Tesori who is not only sponsored by Bodybuilding.com but is also Manger of Supply Chain management with the U. S. Airforce—wow! The 5’ 2” Tesori resides in Salt Lake City and considers working for her country to be a privilege.

Even though she has busy days with the Department of Defense she always makes the point to work out even if for only 20 minutes. The former junk food junkie used to live on corndogs and Mountain Dew (ah—college!) She now eats a very clean diet and totes around her meals in a cooler to and from work.

Kathleen is featured in the “20-Minute Fat-Burning Workout” inside the issue as well.

20 minute workout Oxygen 001

“Your Ultimate Upper Body”

By doing two opposing exercises at the same time you can see powerful effects (such as combining lunges with bicep curls.) Check out some of these moves from trainer Cindy Whitmarsh that will help increase your metabolic burn.

“Portable Pilates”

Oxygen has expert Pilates trainer Juliet Kaska of JK Zen Fitness show how we can all do this workout from home. (Note to self—get this equipment, stat!)

“Fine-Tune Your Butt”

With a headline like that—guess what muscles you will be working with this feature? These exercises were developed by Simone De La Rue whom I completely adore. (Hi Simone!)

“Pink Power!”

I am not much of a runner (if you ever see me running—ask what the hell is wrong!) Nor am I much of a “pink” girl but this page of pink running gear gives me the happies. (Maybe because Spring has sprung!)

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Strong Body, Strong Mind” Exercising your body can also help your mind from “warding off dementia to relieving anxiety and depression.”
  • “Eat Smarter to Feel Great” If you have problems with inflammation (over here!) changing your diet can help “minimize it’s effects.”

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Counting Stars” 50-Minute Ride

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Counting Stars” (50-minute Ride)

americano___lady_gaga_by_johtojamesiii-d3kdv1x

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Are you ready for a tough workout? This 50-minute playlist that I created is filled with music that will hopefully get you motivated on your next ride or run. As usual—there is a mixture of newer tunes with a few 90s gems. Enjoy!

  • Counting Stars: OneRepublic

OneRepublic is a band from Colorado who wrote this super-catchy song that makes my head bop to the beat.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & The Tantrums

Today one of my favorite students told me this was her favorite song from this list. Fitz & The Tantrums are a Los Angeles band that writes fun tunes that will make you want to sing along.

  • Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You): Kelly Clarkson

This has to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Seriously—Kelly Clarkson just sings the hell out of it.

  • Dangerous: Big Data

I got this directly from the Internet—“Big Data is a paranoid electronic music project from the Internet.’ Not sure what that means but Dangerous has a bouncy energy I love.

  • Rope: Foo Fighters

Whenever I want to set the volume to “11”—I put on some Foos!

  • Holiday: Green Day

This is my favorite song from American Idiot!

  • Get Off This: Cracker

When I want to reminisce about young & free in the 90s—I play songs like this one.

  • My Moon My Man: Feist

Where is Feist these days? I miss her!

  • Americano: Lady Gaga

I loves me some Gaga and this live version is fun to watch!

  • I Heard I Had: Dear Rouge

This is a new band from Vancouver and this song makes me want to dance around the room.

  • Stupid Girl: Garbage

Shirley Manson is my spirit animal.

  • Get Higher: Black Grape

This song is wonderfully subversive and fun.

  • Pets: Pornos for Pyros

I wish I could find the original video for this song as I recall it being freaky and fun.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist “Happy Ride” with Pharrell Williams, Metric, Moby & More

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Happy Ride” (50-minute Ride)

"I look badass like this--right?"

“I look like a badass, right?”

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Spring is in the air (well, we had a hint of it over the weekend) and I am ready to look forward to a new season filled with sunny skies, warmer temps and an upbeat attitude. So today I present my newest playlist featuring some of my favorite tunes right now. Enjoy!

  • Happy: Pharrell Williams

I should hate this song with all of its cheeriness and lack of cynicism but dammit if it isn’t so much fun to bop your head along to this one. (Does that sound passive aggressive? I hope not!)

  • Fire Sign: The Gossip

Beth Ditto has one of the best voices in rock and roll and this is my favorite tunes by her band.

  • Let It Whip: Dazz Band

Can any song make me happier than this one? I think Pharrell has stiff competition here.

  • Can’t Hold Us Down: Christina Aguilera

I cannot believe this song is over ten years old now—yikes! (I am indeed getting old.)

  • When You’re Falling: Afro Celt Sound System

This is a great song to climb to and I love Peter Gabriel’s voice.

  • Gold Guns Girls: Metric

My all-time favorite Metric single and it it kills me that I have yet to see them live. (Need to work on that…)

  • Safe and Sound: Capital Cities

A real bouncy-sounding tune that reminds of 80’s pop music.

  • South Side: Moby

Gwen Stefani really classes up the joint here.

  • Let Me Entertain You: Robbie Williams

For some reason he never caught on in America but I still love to hear me some Robbie Williams.

  • Believe in Me: Sloan

If you are not familiar with this pop/rock Canadian band—try out this song to start. They know how to write hooks!

  • Creep: TLC

(This reminds me –I still need to see that VH-1 movie…)

  • Time to Pretend: MGMT

Supposedly MGMT will have a new music out this year. (Fingers crossed!)

  • Take a Picture: Filter

The lead singer is very cute and his brother was in Terminator 2.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed Ride”

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed” (50-minute Ride)

RIP

RIP

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

I have two new online stations that have been rocking my world lately and helping me add to my playlists. Here they are:

  • WLIR online plays an amazing selection of alternative music from the last 30 years. Everything from the B-52s to Lorde to Depeche Mode. Now, since this is a free online station they get a little too crowded sometimes and you can’t log on. But if you, definitely try them out!
  • The Peak in Vancouver plays amazing alternative music plus tons of Canadian bands which are new to me and I am finding I really love.

Got that? So let’s get into to today’s playlist which consists of some old and new tunes to get you in the mood to run, cycle and workout harder. Let’s go!

  • Big Blue Wave: Hey Ocean!

Hey Ocean! Is a Canadian band that released this fun, frothy tune  last year. Love opening up with it in my classes.

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

One of my students asked me recently “who wrote that Pulp Fiction smash up song?” It took me a minute to figure out what she was talking about!

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

I just lerve this song to pieces.

  • Breathing Underwater: Metric

I have said the before but I need to state again how much I regret not seeing this band when they played in New York last year. Will not make that same mistake again!

  • Rebellion: Arcade Fire

This is one of the best songs ever to climb to or make yourself work harder. It’s fantastic!

  • Rebel Yell: Billy Idol

OMG this is just the greatest song in the world. How does it get better than “in the midnight hour—she cried more, more, MORE!”

  • American Psyco: Treble Charger

Yet another Canadian band I was unaware of until The Peak!

  • Family Affair: Mary J. Blige

I am dedicating this one to my friend Stacy who introduced me to badass Mary J.

  • Spaceman: The Killers

I like to perform high intensity sprints to this song.

  • Simple Life: Elton John

This is one of Elton’s lesser known 90s tunes but I love it for long climbs and  the lyrics are really inspiring.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sarah

Hell yeah, I say!

  • Walk on the Wild Side: Lou Reed

This is one of those pieces of culture that inspired me to move to New York. I spent my whole life in the boring ‘burbs and I was ready to indeed walk on the wild side. (RIP Lou Reed. This city will be much less interesting without you in it.)

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…
