“Firm Up, Slim Down”

Brian Nguyen (owner of Brik Fitness in Redondo Beach, CA) offers this workout which uses free weights to help develop muscles. Me likey!!

Inside workout 001

“Play it Cool”

The heat—I can NOT take this heat anymore. Now if I had some of these groovy items that promise to cool me off while working out my attitude on it might improve. (Though I can’t guarantee it!)

Play it Cool 001

“White Out”

I am not a big tennis person (I can barely hit the ball back!) However, these skirts make me want to act all preppy and super WASP-y.

Tennis Skirts 001

“Best Road Trip Ever”

Looking for ideas for the rest of summer to both relax and get a good sweat going? Try this feature which includes a hike I MUST try out near Philly real soon.

Best Road Trip 001

“Drive-Through Done Right”

Ever been on a road trip and had to face nonstop, lousy fast food options for your meals? (Yuck!) Fitness offers suggestions for “safe bets” to order from the top ten popular chains.

Drive Thru Done Right 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Running in the Family” Marathoner (and writer) Alyssa Shaffer talks about learning to run with her five-year old twins.
  • “Workouts Gone Wrong” There are tons of people out there doing a particular workout (coughs…CrossFit…coughs) that isn’t particularly a. safe or b. good for you. Get the details on what can go wrong  (with the aforementioned one as well as others) and how to avoid injury.
  • “Pool It” Are you one of those lucky so-and-sos who has access to a pool? I hate you! Kidding! Look at this feature for moves you can do while hanging out in your pool. (Your pool? I hate you!)
  • “Pour it On” If you love juice but worry about empty calories—here are some healthy options.
  • “Ditch the Sugar Habit” Tips on how to ditch the sweet stuff from your life.

Overall Grade:

A- Excellent read to get you through those hot summer days.

Fitness “Meet & Tweet” Recap! @FitnessMagazine @roccodispirito @DrJAshton @FitBottomedMama 10

Fitness “Meet & Tweet” NYC

Highlights of Blogger Extravaganza Including:

Top Editors from Fitness, Dr. Jennifer Ashton and Rocco DiSpirito

Plus, More Fit Bloggers Than You Can Shake a Stick At!

Fitness meet and teet brochure 001

Hey All!

Recently I enjoyed a day of fun, fitness, health and good cheer with some of the most amazing people in the Blogosphere with Fitness magazine’s second annual “Blogger Meet & Tweet” which was held this year at the fancy, schmancy Mercedes Club in New York City.

Throughout the morning we were treated to some interesting panel discussions featuring Fitness editors along with celebrity guests for a variety of topics.

Check out the view!

We were treated to a lovelier than expected day where we sat outside and got our collective learning on.
Fitness editor in chief Betty Wong was on hand to greet all Bloggers plus send us off to collect our loot (more on THAT later.)

There was a panel discussion featuring the top Bloggers in health & wellness including:

This panel discussion was moderated by Fitness digital editor Christine Griffin and provided all sorts of inspiration for us would-be money making Bloggers. (Not that I do it for the money…)

fitness Event 2

In fact, Erin even though Erin I work for the same company (I am a NYC contributor to Fit Bottomed Girls) this was the first we chance we got to give each other a hug. (Hey again Erin!)

Me and Erin Whitehead FBM

I think my favorite segment was when Fitness health editor Lisa Haney talked about women’s health issues with Jennifer Ashton, M.D., F.A.C.O.G. http://www.jenniferashtonmd.com/ who was ready to discuss everything from Angelina Jolie’s decision to get a double mastectomy to the importance of birth control pills. She was so interesting!

Dr Ashton and Me

So, of course, I had to run over and get my picture taken with her. (Just so you know I am 5’ 7”—this woman is a TALL drink of water!)

Also on hand were The Biggest Loser trainer Brett Hoebel who talked about the latest trends in “extreme fitness” and celebrity makeup artist Sarah Lucero who showed us how to stay gorgeous in the upcoming summer, sweaty months.

My favorite part of the day was watching my friend Mariette of Namaste Mari get totally gaga for Rocco DiSpirito. How cute do they look together by the way?

Mariette and Rocco

The “Meet & Tweet” was the perfect chance to catch up with friends like Jess,  Erica Sara, Patty Aziaga and my home girl Toni of Running Living Loving (below) as we are all too busy running around and never have time to catch up in person.

(Two Long Island chicks just hanging out, know what I mean?)

Toni and Me

So did I mention the goodie bag?

Well here is what it looked like coming home:

Goodie Bag

And this is how it looks when I tried to go through it:

Among the items I received that day:

Whew! It was quite a day and I can NOT wait until next year so I can see what Fitness has in mind for us humble Bloggers.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 36

 4020_DryDown_b

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today, as I am typing this post, it is Mother’s Day so first want to wish all of you Moms out there a “Happy Day” and thank you for your service to mankind. I am a mother of two furry babies and could not imagine all of the work involved in raising a real-live human being so kudos to all of you who date to try. (Except for that mother in Park Slope who asked me to explain to her 4 year-old son he was not allowed to join in the adult fitness classes because “he doesn’t really listen to me.”) You Madam, needn’t have bothered.

Today I am aiming for a super, quick Vlog cast and announcing my latest giveaway. So let’s get to gettin’, shall we?

By the way—for those of you who do read it, a woman names Liz Nealon is mentioned fondly several times as a well-respected colleague of the former VJs. • I forgot to mention (dammit!) that the author of the VJ book is Gavin Edwards in the Vlog post. (Sorry Gavin Edwards!) Here is a link to all of his fun, pop culture and music-based books. Amazon.com: Gavin Edwards. He is a great writer—you should check out his work.
  • The most important book to come out in the last week or so is the third from my very best friend Deborah Rae Cota The Traveler (available in paperback and on Kindle & Nook!)  Deborah and I have been friends for over 20 years and she loves to write about fantastical beings with incredible powers and her story telling is top notch. Isla enjoys hiking around the mountains of Southern California plus her five-days per week yoga sessions to keep herself sane and was nice enough to share her favorite yoga poses from her instructor Kirschen Hagenlocher.

(How cute is she in outfit by the way?!)

Oh boy—my love for Jillian grows by leaps and bounds with every interview. In this one for Fitness she admits that while she loves her kids to death—they also drive her crazy sometimes.  She also admits she now checks her e-mails while on the StiarMaster instead of giving 100% to all of her workouts (a big “no-no” before for the strict trainer.)

Jillian also gives us a look at her exclusive “Bodyshred” workout that is taught at Crunch gyms all over the U.S.

5 Ingredient Fix

5 Ingredient Fix

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone today? I am feeling all gooey and sentimental this week and just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate our virtual friendship. I started this blog almost three years ago with absolutely NO idea what I would write about or who on earth would pay attention to my ramblings. It’s taken a little while but I am really starting to get this whole Blog/Vlog groove going and just wanted to say “thank you” to all of you have shown me support and kindness. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Don’t worry—nothing is changing here. I think it is because this is my birthday month (March 29th—mark it on your calendars!) that I am feeling all kinds of sentimental about people that I love and how lucky I am to have friends all over the world because of the wacky Interwebs. Yes, you are my friends and I just want to let you know that you all rock so freaking hard!

Anyhoo—let’s get back to my Blog/Vlog. Today I am once again giving away a cool prize thanks to the good folks at the Florida Department of Citrus (check out the Vlog to see what it is.) Plus I will talk about…

Now let’s check out today’s Vlog post!

Here is some more information about Claire Robinson’s book which I am giving away:

Claire Robinson, the hot new Food Network star of 5 Ingredient Fix and Food Network Challenge, helps people get dinner on the table with little fuss and a few great ingredients.

The quest for simple, affordable, and fresh, mouthwatering food is over. 5 INGREDIENT FIX helps put delicious and sophisticated meals on the table in a snap. With people struggling to simplify, streamline, and budget, the Food Network’s Claire Robinson is here to help. Cooking doesn’t have to be complicated to be impressive; simplifying the process with fewer ingredients saves time, frustration, and ultimately, money. From breakfast treats like Brioche French Toast with Strawberries and Cream to no-fuss meals like Grown-up Grilled Cheese and Iceberg Wedges with Buttermilk Dressing to a romantic dinner of Grilled Scallops with Saffron Aioli and Green Goddess Rice, all of Robinson’s recipes have five or fewer ingredients. A quick trip to the supermarket for one bag of groceries, and a delicious, restaurant-quality meal can be on the table in no time.

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Lucy Liu
How much do I love Lucy Liu? THIS MUCH!! The star of some of my favorite movies ever (Charlie’s Angels & Kill Bill) talks about how she keeps in amazing shape for her 16-hour shoots on Elementary. Turns out she is a big fan of both Pilates and running on her treadmill.

Check out Lucy’s at-home routine here:
