September 2015

Sophia Bush photographed by Matt Jones

Health Cover Star for September:

Chicago P.D. star Sophia Bush is on the cover and though I haven’t caught that show yet I remember her from One Tree Hill from over ten years ago.  AND I can mention actually getting to meet her then because of my job with YM magazine (a now much-missed teen publication) at the time.

Anyway, Sophia is 33 now and credits her 10-minute morning meditation to keeping her sane and even recommends an app called “Headspace” to help with this which I downloaded right away. (It’s neat!)

She lost her ex-boyfriend Google executive Dan Fredinburg when he trekked to Mount Everest and there was an earthquake during his climb. This experience has been completely devastating for Sophia and made her realize how precious life is.

Sophia relies on the aforementioned meditation and her morning 2-mile runs to keep centered.

Apropos of nothing else I really love the Alexander Wang dress she is wearing on the cover…

So what else is inside the September Health?

“Yoga for Killer Arms”

Yoga and Pilates instructor Kristin McGee demonstrates how to perform a proper chaturanga to strengthen your upper body. (It took me months to figure out how to do these at first.)

Yoga arms health magazine 001

“Your Better Leg (and Butt!) Plan”

Gwyneth’s favorite fitness guru, Tracy Anderson, is a regular in the pages of Health and she is famous for complicated leg lifts with multiple (and I mean multiple) reps that will leave you begging for mercy. This page will give you just that.

Tracy Anderson in Health magazine 001

“Coconut Oil Hacks”

I am one of those annoying coconut oil evangelists who will regale you with how many purposes it serves in my life but check out this page and read it for yourself. You will thank me later. (You’re welcome!)

Coconut Oil Hacks health mag 001

“Love All”

I am not a very good tennis player but LOVE the outfits and some of the items featured here can be worn to any workout. Win/win, people!

Tennis gear for Health magazine 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Memory: A User’s Manual” It is my goal to improve my ability to memorize and remember things. (Like knowing exactly when my mother is planning to visit which I screwed up by 24 hours this morning. True story!) I found that these pages give great tips on how to do just that. (Yes, I will work to apply them.)
  • “60 Beauty Breakthroughs” I love me some beauty stories and here we have new products for skin care, body lotions, make-up, nail colors and hair care. Love!
  • “5 Reasons You’re Always Hungry” I used to have a ravenous appetite after starting a new diet and would want to just eat non-stop. Anyhoo—if you have that issue they have advice here on how to stop the munchies from taking over your life.
  • “9 Probiotic Foods You Have to Try” Included here are Kvass, sauerkraut, kefir and my sister’s favorite thing in the world—kombucha!

B+ There are some smart features in this issue which I appreciate but I was hoping for at least one complete workout to take away.

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

May 2015

Tracy Anderson photographed by Nathaniel Welch

Tracy Anderson photographed by Nathaniel Welch

Health Cover Star for May:

The cover star for May is none other than Tracy Anderson who runs her own studios in Los Angeles, New York City and the Hamptons along with her own soon-to-be video streaming service called Real Time with Tracy. The way it will work is each week Tracy will create a workout and offer notes for you to practice before your next session to gradually build your body into a Tracy Anderson-created lean sexy machine. A new workout will go up every Wednesday and the  projected cost will be $80 per month.

I will let that sink in for a minute.

If you are not familiar with Tracy she is one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s favorite trainers and people pay BIG bucks to take her classes in person. I own a few of her DVDs and let me tell you—her leg routines are KILLER!

Tracy is the mom to two kids (Sam, 16 and Penelope 2) and is trying to project good, healthy habits to her family. She hates spinning (the movements are too repetitive) and thinks juice cleanses are a big waste of time.

You can see some of her workout here:

“9 Trainers you’ll Love on Instagram”

Health picked the best of the best to follow for advice and inspiration on Instagram.

Instagrammers to Follow 001

“Is Your Tech Style Hurting You?”

With most of us leaning forward to look at our computer screens and mobile phones it is causing pain in the neck, back and shoulder region or is otherwise known as “text neck” in some circles.

Here we get advice on how to better read our tablets, phones and laptops that while not a perfect solution—will help alleviate painful symptoms from arising.

Tech Style Hurting You Health mag 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Breasts: A User’s Manual” It is predicted that the diagnosis of breast cancer will rise 50% by the year 2030 so now is a good a time as any to get to know yours better!
  • “You Could Save a Life… Even Your Own” With the warmer & sunny weather coming along (finally!) it means more exposure of the skin to the sun which means an increase in the possibility of skin cancer. (Yikes—more cancer talk!) Look at this feature to get an idea on what kinds of moles are okay and which to be on the lookout for over the next few months. (Really—you should get a checkup every year.)

What Did We Learn This Month? Health Magazine with the Lovely Anna Faris @goodhealth 29

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

April 2015

Anna Faris photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath

Anna Faris photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath

Health Cover Star for April:

Anna Faris is the April cover star and I just adore how sweet and down-to-earth she comes across in interviews. Anna is the star of one of my favorite comedies—The House Bunny and the actress knows how to put a unique, quirky spin to her performances. She is currently starring in CBS TV’s Mom and is happy in her home life with (now buff) Chris Pratt and their young boy Jack.

Anna’s breakfast of choice is antelope sausage (her husband likes to hunt their own food) and she has a hard time with activities like yoga which require stillness and quiet (me too!)  The couple hopes to move their family out of creepy paparazzi-ville Los Angeles one of these days and enjoy nature a bit more. (She is from Edmonds, Washington.)

So what else is inside the April Health?

“The Three Best Moves for Tight, Trim Abs”

Health asked trainer Joel Harper for his favorite abs workout to get your core strong and here they are! (I like the leg circles for sure!)

Abs Moves Health magazine 001

“4 Ultimate Booty Boosters”

Tracy Anderson (Goop’s favorite trainer) has a few moves that are a little tricky to figure out based on the description but I guarantee you WILL feel them the next day. Tracy recommends you do this particular series of leg moves six times per week along with 30-60 minutes of cardio to see full results so not a quick workout for sure. (I say if you can get something like this in twice a week you will still see a benefit.)

Tracey Anderson in Health magazine 001

“Get a Balanced Body”

Big time trainer to the stars Gunner Peterson created this workout that will challenge your core by engaging multiple muscle groups in a proprioceptively challenging space.

Exercises for Balance Health mag 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Nose: A User’s Manual” My sinuses drive me crazy almost every single day. Like I blow my nose constantly and I still feel like I can’t breathe very well. Good advice here includes to NOT about the neti pot which I have certainly done in the past.
  • “Upgrade Your Sport Shoe” I am so ready to toss out all of my sneakers that have been ruined by this lousy winter weather. These pages gave me fun ideas to trade in for right now!
  • “Sugar Confusion, Cleared” As someone who tries to keep the ‘bad” sugars out her diet (and fails with the occasional Starburst) this article was a good read. .

Health Cover Star for March:

Alison Sweeney is on the cover and she talks about body image, life without Days of Our Lives, The Biggest Loser and the insecurity she feels from the contestants, her favorite workouts and how she is trying be a strong example for her daughter.

So what else is inside the March Health?

“Yoga at Your Desk”

Health magazine’s Kristin McGee shows off a few yoga moves you can do at your desk to try and keep your alignment in check. It’s tough with all of the sitting most us do but the “Cow Face Arms” will be one of my new daily moves.

Yoga at Your Desk 001 (1)

“30 Days to a Toned Stomach”

Tracy Anderson (who teaches at a SoHo studio that is so exclusive they will NOT sell single-class passes) has created these four alternatives to the basic plank move to get your core toned.

“Walk This Way”

I loved the cues here on how to get proper workout with your power walk. I tend to hold my arms too close and should swing them a bit more using my core to stabilize.

“Just Right Jackets”

Is it Spring yet? Because I am so damn tired of wearing my parka every single day and looking at these bright jackets is giving me an intense sense of longing.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Fat: A User’s Manual” Perhaps one of THE most misunderstood parts of the human body is fat. Hallie Levine dissects what there is to love and loathe it.
  • “7 Surprising Secrets to Eating Out Healthy” Good tips here on how to eat out and stay on a healthy path.
  • “That Pill Can Do What?” New uses for over-the-counter meds that will help what ails you from headaches to muscle soreness to dandruff.

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

January/February 2015

Jennifer Wilderstrom photographed by James White

Jennifer Wilderstrom photographed by James White

Health Cover Star for January/February:

I am not a Biggest Loser watcher as there are too many shows waiting in my DVR and on Netflix that will not watch themselves. However, I do love their newest trainer Jennifer (Jen) Widerstrom and philosophy “I’m not looking for dramatic results. I’m looking for consistency. Don’t sprint. Just be stable.” Yes!

Also the badass trainer’s thoughts on running “I hate it.” Me too!!!

Jen is a former American Gladiator (who joined the show on a lark) who was nicknamed “Phoenix” and owes her love of fitness to both parents who coached her. This issue she offers her own workout plus there is a 7-Day meal plan from the book The Biggest Loser Bootcamp: The 8_Week Get Real, Get-Results Weight Loss Program.

You can see Jen in action here:

Jennifer Widerstrom in Health 001

So what else is inside the January/February Health?

“5 Fresh Ways to do a Plank”

Health magazine’s yoga expert Kristin McGee offers a few variations on the plank which will work your core extra hard. Tried these out on my bootcampers this morning and they loved (hated) them all!

Kristin McGee 001

“Get Firm in a Flash”

I like Tracy Anderson’s mat work but some of these look tricky to do, no?  They do offer a cardio effort in addition to toning.

Tracy Anderson in Health 001

“Superior Posterior”

One of my favorite trainers, David Kirsch, offers these moves to help get your glutes in top shape.

Posterior Moves 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Butt: A User’s Manual” This is not just about workouts for the proverbial junk in the trunk. This features also talks about sciatica pain, pulled hamstrings and more that can happen when things go awry with your backside.
  • “What Top Heart Docs Tell Their Friends” What the top cardiologists advise their friends on how to stay healthy including not worrying about salt so much (just cut out processed foods) and the kinds of fish you need to eat.
  • “5 Problems a Doctor Can Miss” And then sometimes doctors miss things—like IBS, Fibromyalgia and Lupus. Yikes!

Follow Heath online at: www.Health.com

Overall Grade:

B Overall it’s a good issue but I felt like it was missing something. Not sure what, but it seemed a little light for me this month. Maybe in the next issue?

Hilary Duff Fans Rule!

Tria Hair Removal System Tryout

A Kick-Ass Metabolic Workout from Namaste Mari

Plus: Leslie Sansone “Walk off the Fat Fast” DVD Giveaway

Enter to win this DVD!

Enter to win this DVD!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone? I have been terribly busy lately and did not have the proper amount of time to get to my Vlog postings so please accept my apologies for slacking in that area. As I said a couple of weeks ago, life has a way of interrupting our best laid plans. Between work, the Blog, the podcast and then dealing with healthcare (insurance) issues I have not had the downtime to focus on giveaways and newsy things I wish to discuss—but today I am back! I have a few news and notes and then we will get right into this week’s giveaway.

So away we go….

  • Hilary Duff Fans: Up on my Blog right now I have a review of the December Health magazine with Hilary Duff and in it I described a (sort of) meeting I had with the Duffster when she was a teen queen. Well her fans have done me a solid and have been retweeting it like pros. Thanks to all of you Duff fans my numbers went through the roof. Thanks gang! You truly are SUPER fans!
  • Tria Hair Removal System: This past October I met with some of the folks from Tria who had some nifty at-home laser treatments for hair removal. I have spent an embarrassing amount of money on threading treatments and waxes which left my skin red, ruddy and did not seem to help the issue. So guess how excited I was when they picked ME to try out the Tria Hair Removal Laser Precision system on my own. Wee! I have been using it for a few weeks now and I will give a proper review next month but so far I am really impressed it.
  • My Girl Namaste Mari: One of my favorite people in the world is Mari from Nameste Mari and each Wednesday she gives you a kick ass workout. This week’s really made me sweat so I asked if she would let me post it here and she said yes! Check out this video which includes an appearance by none other than her adorable cat Zen (I love that boy.)

  • Leslie Sansone Walk Off Fat Fast: If you are looking for a low impact workout that will help get your heartrate up and shape those muscles then you need try out Leslie Sansone and her Walk at Home fitness program. This week’s giveaway is one copy of her DVD Walk Off Fat Fast and is available to one lucky winner in Continental U.S. (Check out a clip here!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

What Did We Learn This Month? @Goodhealth Health Magazine with Hilary Duff! 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

 Health

December 2014

Hilary Duff photographed by Cliff Watts

Hilary Duff photographed by Cliff Watts

Health Cover Star for December:

So have I ever told you guys about my Hilary Duff story? Ten years ago I was working for a teen magazine that is sadly no longer with us (RIP YM!) and once we had the teen queen on our cover.

Hillary was promoting her first album and had a big time CD signing at Virgin Records store in Times Square to celebrate. (Oy, that sentence seems so antiquated now!) Anyhoo– my colleague and I took a stack of magazines over with her smiling face on the cover to see if we could possibly get them autographed for the staff at YM.

I suppose we should have known better than to think we could just show up and say “Hi, we work at a magazine. Can we meet Hillary?” In fact—her security team kept us quite a bit away from the Duffster as she was being greeted by thousands of screaming fans (more than a few crying at the very sight of their teen idol.)

When we were finally able to get a close up look at the star we were told the line was closed and that Hilary had to leave right away. Let’s just say a few young fans were rather heartbroken and the energy changed from super exciting to rather stale and depressing in no time.

The one cool thing that happened though was that a NYC cop yelled out he was a big fan and Hilary leapt over to pose for a few photos with him for the fans who could not get an autograph which I thought was rather sweet.

I will also say my friend and I were worried about the teen star as that up close you could see how tired she was and terribly thin as well. Like scary skinny.

So it makes me so happy to see her now as a fully functioning adult (a mom nonetheless!) looking so happy and healthy inside the magazine.

Anyhoo—Hilary has a new show coming out in January called Younger and it is being produced by Darren Star who only created Sex & the City, people!

So yay Hilary!

Now, what else is inside the December Health?

“Sweat When You’re Sick”

If there is one question I get this time of year as an instructor it’s “hey—can I workout with a cold?” Well I will tell them all to check out the new Health magazine and find out for themselves. You can see it here, however!

What Did We Learn This Month? Health magazine with Maria Menounos on the Cover! 8

July/August 2014

Maria Menounos photographed by James White

Maria Menounos photographed by James White

Health CoverStar for July/August

Maria Menounos

All I know about Maria Menounos comes from listening to her interviews with Howard Stern where the entertainment reporter says “nooooo-uh!” and “yes-uh!” constantly. Plus, she also has a fun/goofy laugh.  After reading this interview I now know that Maria has a reality show on Oxygen called Chasing Maria Manounos and just published her own diet book The EveryGirl’s Guide to Diet & Fitness.

In college Maria had at one point ate “competitively” to keep up with her guy friends and wound up gaining 40 pounds by her junior year. Then she noticed a sign for a Miss Massachusetts pageant with a $1000 entrance fee thinking spending that much money would give her to motivation to lose weight and fix her bad eating habits. She has kept the weight off 16 years later!

You can get a look-see at some of Maria’s favorite exercises here:
