Shape Cover Star for September 2014:

Brooke Burke-Charvet is on the cover and the 43 year-old mom of four is excited to start her new venture Caelum athletic wear (she teaches “Booty Burn” classes in her hometown of Malibu.) She looks totally amazing by any measure but especially after all of her recent heath and career woes.

First, Brooke was rather rudely dumped by the producers of Dancing with the Stars competition show that she had been a part of for several years (“going in a new direction” is how they explained it to her over the phone while she was carpooling her kids around–sheesh!)

Then the sh*t got real…

In short, Brooke had Hashimoto’s disease for over ten years and took medicine to help her manage her hypothyroidism. Over time she discovered a lump which turned out to be thyroid cancer and she had a thyroidectomy. (Yikes!!)

Brooke is currently feeling better than ever and shows off a few of her favorite “Booty Burn” moves inside this issue of Shape:

What else is in the September issue of Shape?

“Trail Moves”

Orthopedist John Muyan, M.D., director of sports medicine at Maimonides Medical Center (in Brooklyn!) offers these exercises which help strengthen the muscles that are challenged most when running on “uneven surfaces.”

 Trail workout 001

“Big Time”

I rarely wear my heart rate watch anymore but the batch featured on this page look pretty damn cool!

Big Time 001

 “Hit The Trail”

Shape picks the best (and cutest) gear to take on your next hike outside.

Hiking story 001

“Super-Sculpters”

I really, really liked the band workout featured here by trainer Rachel Piskin of ChaiseFitness.

Scuplters 001

“On Your Feet”

Suzanne Bowen of Barre-Amped Boot Camp DVD created this low impact walking workout that takes only 30 minutes to do and will build your leg strength.

Take a Walk 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape (A little lean this month…)

  • “Word of Mouth” The best new products on the market for oral care.
  • Sofia Vergara: Looking smoking hot in the back of the magazine.

Follow Shape magazine online at: www.Shape.com

Overall Grade:

B+ The workouts featured are all great but the fashion pages left me wanting more. Just sort of “meh” for me this month but I set a high bar for Shape so let’s look out for October!

What Did We Learn This Month? Health Magazine June 2014 Issue with Rachel Bilson 3

Health Cover Star for June:

Rachel Bilson

Confession time—I have never seen one thing Rachel Bilson has been in including The OC but she seems very sweet. Um—that’s all I have for this one.

So what else is inside the June Health?

“Your Big-Day Checklist”

Health  culled together everything you need to take with you on race including a “bounce-free” bra from Lululemon I need to check out –ASAP.

Race Day Set Up 001

“Tracy Tones You”

While I do not prescribe to all of Tracy Anderson’s training ideas (for example saying that women she never use “heavy” weights) but I do like her core work and these moves are pretty damn cool.

Tracy Anderson Abs workout 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Colon”

This is my favorite feature in every issue where Health examines one part of the human body and gives advice on how to best take care of it. Good stuff on how to keep your colon working at its best.

Your Colon 001

“10 New Sunscreen Finds”

I make it a point of getting all new sunblock every year (the ingredients will lose power over time) and there were some pretty cool finds here.

Sunscreen 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Yoga for a Flat Belly” Yoga super-stah Kristin McGee gives for perfecting your boat pose which is always the toughest one for me.
  • “7 Vacation Health Hassles, Solved” Tips for surviving your next trip to where ever you are lucky enough to go. (Savanah—I will see June 26th!)
  • “Are You Getting a Great Gyno Exam?” I am in the position of having to find a new gynecologist due to my new health care plan and trying to find a decent doctor to replace her is challenging. This article is making me remember what I need to look for in my next visit.

Overall Grade:

B: Just an okay issue for me this month. I normally like Health but this one lacked a fun takeaway for me.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 60: My New Facebook Fan Page, “Man-Splaining” The Smiths & Da Vinci Body Board Giveaway! 5

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 60

Featuring: My New Facebook Fan Page, “Man-Splaining Morrissey & Partnering with Comeback Momma

For the Da Vinci Body Board Giveaway

 davinci-homepage-hero-v2

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So this week I am a little cramped for time and need to just get out a couple of things before I give you the sexy deets about my first partnership with my good friend at Comeback Momma. This giveaway is worth $400 and will rock your socks off! But first a little housekeeping and a quick nonsensical story about a clueless hipster, cash register dude who tried to explain The Smiths to me at Trader Joe’s this past week. (Son—I have been listening to Mope Rock since before your parents even met!)

First, the fun news of the week:

  • I finally have a Facebook Fan Page—whoo hoo! Here is the Link please, pretty please with sugar lumps on top will you follow me (or rather, “like” my page?) It will make me so happy to have you all join me there. (Big kadooz to my friend Mariette at Namaste Mari for helping me get my crap together with this project!)

“Man-splaining Morrissey”

I talk about this more in this week’s Vlog but recently a cashier at Trader Joe’s engaged me in a very awkward conversation. He was singing the lyrics while attempting to explain to me the “irony” inherent in The Smiths song “Happy Unbirthday.”  I am so not kidding about this.

To give you some context I am clearly MUCH older than the kid at Trader Joe’s and The Smiths and Morrissey are more from my generation so why did he bring up the subject in the first place and felt the need to explain the lyrics to me? It was just a weird exchange. Here is The Smith “Happy Unbirthday” if you have no idea what on earth I am talking about but feel like getting bummed out for a few minutes.

Anyhoo—on to the giveaway! I am really happy to be a part of such a cool, freaking awesome giveaway—the Da Vinci Body Board which retails for $400. All of the details are below my signature and the giveaway will be live from Monday. November 11th – Sunday, December 1st and I wish you all the best of luck.

Now on to this week’s Vlog!

Da Vinci Body Board Giveaway

Introducing The Da Vinci BodyBoard

The Da Vinci BodyBoard system combines strength training and cardio in one short, daily workout system. The system works for any fitness level and can be used as a rehab system for injuries. The system is designed to build long, lean, muscles and does not tear the muscle. As a result, it can be used daily. This facilitates a more habit-forming exercise regime.
Because of the short time commitment, there are no excuses. The BodyBoard also reaches the smaller muscles that support your joints creating a body with a more complete and balanced muscle structure.

You’ll never want to put off a Da Vinci BodyBoard workout. Its an effective workout system that builds strength and cardio fitness, AND it fits into a busy lifestyle, so it’s something you will look forward to in your daily routine.

I’ve partnered with the giveaway host, Comeback Momma to present this amazing giveaway. Check out her review of the Da Vinci Body Board. Good luck!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 58: Featuring @BitchCakes @SparkPeople @TheCoachNicole 7

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 58

Featuring: Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

(Including Bitch Cakes, Fit Bottomed Girls, Howard & Beth Stern and Oxygen magazine)

Planning a NYC Potluck Brunch (November 2nd!)

and My Review of Spark Activity Tracker

mbsl_glow

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This past week has been crazy busy for me filled with meetings, teaching classes, going to press events and checking in with old friends visiting NYC. These are the very things that make me happy and I am feeling extra blessed lately. (Thank you all for being a part of my life!)

So today I want to give “shout outs” that are making me happy this week including the planning of my first “NYC Healthy Blogger Brunch” and my review of the Spark Activity Tracker  from  the folks at Spark People. So let’s get to it, shall we?

What Makes a Brooklyn Fit Chick Happy?

  • I was honored to get a signed copy of Sheryl Yvette’s appearance in Weight Watchers magazine. Doesn’t she look fantastic? I first saw Sheryl several years ago during a bike ride where she wore a glamorous outfit (which included high heels) and a pink bike. At the time I was too shy to approach her and tell her about my fandom. It’s such a thrill for me to now say we are social media friends and I can’t wait to find out her next set of adventures. (Go Sheryl!)
  • Sheryl WW 001
  • Getting to meet up with Jenn of Fit Bottomed Girls while she was in New York. Jenn is based in Kansas City and I just admire her commitment to health and fitness and creating a site that makes everyone feel welcome and supported. (Go Jenn!)
  • The North Shore Animal League 2014 Calendar from Howard & Beth Stern which arrived at my place this past week autographed by both of them. Howard took photos of his wife Beth (who is a strong animal right advocate) with various shelter animals with the proceeds going to the North Shore Animal league which is a no-kill shelter based in Long Island, NY. Only $24.95 and tons of cuteness on every page. Great for stocking stuffers!
  • Beth Stern Calendar 001
  • Oh look—its Oxygen magazine’s November issue!!!!!!!! The much-missed Oxygen is back ladies and I could not be happier. (Review of the new issue to come this week!)

NYC Healthy Bloggers Potluck Brunch!

Also, this past week I decided to open my domicile to a Healthy Bloggers Brunch. Soooo—if you are based in NYC and would be free on Saturday, November 2nd at about 1 pm in Brooklyn—be sure to let me know! I am working on getting a couple of sponsors for the goodie bags and will need an accurate head count. Just leave a comment below and I will e-mail the details. Bring a dish and enjoy time with some fellow fit-minded peeps!

My happy home. It will be cleaned up by Saturday!

Spark Activity Tracker:

sparkactivitytrackercolorsandclips

(Quick disclaimer: I was supplied the product free of charge from Spark People and not compensated for this review. The opinions are my own and based on my experience with the item.)

Finally—I received the Spark Activity Tracker a few weeks ago from Coach Nicole Nichols herself (not that I am bragging or anything…) and am in LOVE with it! I have tried different kinds of tracking systems in the past but found them to be too big and clunky to use on an everyday basis.

The Spark Activity Tracker is a combination effort of Spark People (which is the largest online weight-loss and fitness community) with FitLinxx to create this tiny, portable battery operated device that you can attach to your sneaker, bra strap or waist band to track steps, calories burned, distanced achieved and total activity time. Some of its best features include:

  • Waterproof to 100 feet (safe for swimming)
  • No charging required—you simply replace the battery in about six months’ time
  • It automatically figures out the difference between a casual stroll and a hard workout.
  • It syncs automatically via a UB dongle
  • It’s only $59.95 and is available on Spark People’s site as well as on Amazon.com.

What else can I say? This a product of great value if you are interested in tracking your fitness results and would be a perfect gift for anyone in your life who loves workout-related gadgets.

Want more? Check out my Vlog post today!

That’s all I have for today. I will be here all week with magazine reviews, workout playlists and giveaways. Y’all come back now, ya hear?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 50 Featuring @Whole30, @RobbWolf, @fhittingroom @Physique57 @Baristudio @mokshayoganyc 3

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 50

The “I Had Me a Great Time on Vacation” and “Back to Whole 30” Edition

Featuring Classes from Bari Studio, Physique 57, the Fhitting Room and Moksha Yoga

The Bari Studio SoHo

The Bari Studio SoHo

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How is everyone? I am feeling fit & fabulous after enjoying a solid week of rest and relaxation. Is there anything better than that? I think not and am ready to get back to my life which includes Blogging and Vlogging for all of you nice folks. Yay!

So how did I spend my week? Instead of working my day job, teaching or training I decided to go out there and try some classes out there that have always intrigued me and enjoy being a student for a change. So without further ado (well, there may be more ado about them in a future article for Fit Bottomed Girls so stay tuned!) here is a quick summation of the classes I was able to take this week.

  • First up we have Bari Studio in Soho where I tried out “Bari Micro”—a very cool 60-minute class where the focus was on the smaller muscles around your body. Really challenging and fun to try out. (See photo of the Soho studio above.)
  • Next I finally had the time to check out the celebrated “barre” class Physique 57 which completely kicked my booty. (Apparently Kelly Ripa is a big fan of the workout.)
  • The Fhitting Room is an Upper East Side High Interval Intensity Training Studio (HIIT) that is a big hit among NYC fitness editors so I knew I had to try them out for myself. Not sure how I made it through the whole hour but I will for sure come back (Thanks so much @erocfitness and @drossfit!)
  • Finally I decided to get a major sweat going with Moska Yoga NYC which is a fast-rising yoga studio movement which emphasizes kindness to both the participants and the environment. My good friend Marrilee Wilson studies at their Halifax studio and turned me on to their classes. (I just could not stomach the idea of Bikram yoga which also believes in a hot room to practice but is WAY too strict for my taste.

Whew! It was a tough week but like I said, it was so nice as an instructor to play the role of an eager student and take my game to a higher level in my own classes. (Thanks to all of you fantastic instructors this past week!)

So now that summer is on the wane and I have been indulging in a little too much “not Paleo” food and wine the last few months I have decided to start a whole new “Whole 30” month starting today. Hooray! This means I will follow Robb Wolf’s Paleo Solution plan for the next 30 days and will NOT indulge in:

  • Processed food (nothing that comes out of a box or a bag)
  • Sugars (except from fruit)
  • Any kind of dairy
  • Wheat, gluten or grain
  • Wine (boo!)

If you want to follow along on my adventure be sure to check me out on Instagram where I will post my day’s meals. (Or if you just want to see photos of some of the cutest cats you have ever seen in your entire life!!! (Really.)

Lastly I want to thank Danny J. of The Sweaty Betties who featured me as an “Ambassador Spotlight” this past week. (And if any of you wouldn’t mind retweeting it I would be most grateful!

Now onto this week’s Vlog post:

Okay—that is it for me today. This week Brooklyn Fit Chick is back up and running and I am looking forward to getting healthy this fall with all of you lovely people!
