Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #80
Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Laurie David’s Fed Up & The Family Cooks, The Amazing Amy Schumer
Plus: Knowing When to Say “No” to Publicity
Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!
I had me a fine and dandy week and hope you did too! Just a few items to get through today and then I will let you go (well—I hope you stick around for my Vlog as well!). The giveaways will be back next week for sure. In the meantime here are my weekly news & notes.
- Hedwig & The Angry Inch: In case you are aquatinted with the musical Hedwig & The Angry Inch it is a show that in a more quaint time would be described as “gender bending” but with our more updated understanding on human sexuality and gender identity let’s just Hedwig is about a brave & tragic figure who will rock your socks off. I stupidly did not catch it the first time it was introduced way, way off Broadway in the 90s but the John Cameron Mitchell creation was turned into a film he directed in 2001 and where I first fell in love with the music. Right now it is on Broadway and Neil Patrick Harris is amazing in the part. He sings, dances, acts, tell jokes and interacts with the audience with such gusto. If you are planning to come to NYC over the next few months—beg, steal or borrow tickets to see this show. You will thank me later!
- Laurie David: Recently I was lucky enough to attend a roundtable discussion with activist and filmmaker Laurie David (she helped produce the Academy Award winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth) and I wrote about my experience for this piece for Fit Bottomed Eats. David is turning her lens on the world of processed foods and the 30-year marketing blitz that has assaulted our concept of the family meal with her new documentary Fed Up. In theaters May 9th!
- The Amazing Amy Schumer: If you are a Howard Stern fan like me (Baba Boowie!) you have heard the comic Amy Schumer on his show riff about dating, sex, her adventures in standup comedy and body issues. She refuses to act, behave or look like anyone else on television so I incorrectly assumed she was immune to insecurity but this speech she gave last week at the Gloria Steinem gala is the sweetest and saddest commentary on how we treat women in our culture and her fight to remain confident. Am I making it sound boring? It’s not–check out the transcript here! (From New York magazine’s Vulture Blog.)
- Brooke “Not On a Diet” Keeps Her Shirt Off! I really adore Brooke Birmingham who is a fellow blogger and animal lover. She lost over 172 pounds with hard work and a strong dedicated effort. Recently she was asked by a national magazine to be featured online and she quickly accepted. However, they wanted her to send them a picture of herself in something other than a two-piece suit because they supposedly had a rule about that. (Shaking my head.) Read her story here and be sure to share on Facebook! (So proud of you for saying “no” Brooke!)
Now let’s get to this week’s Vlog:
That’s all I have this week folks—see you next week with a new giveaway!
Until next time…
