Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes: New Fit Bottomed Girls Podcast and More! 21

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes Summer 2016:

The Launch of the Fit Bottomed Girls Podcast!

Best Core Workouts for Summer Sports and More!

Plus: Book Vs Movie 2nd Anniversary!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I can’t believe how long it has been since I put up a new blog post but life got a little crazy, busy on the work side. The good news—I am working on a project I pitched to the Fit Bottomed Girls and we are really taking off with it!

A little over two months ago I pitched the idea of producing and co-hosting a podcast for Fit Bottomed Girls and now we are officially a thing which pleases me to no end. It’s been a labor of love that has been taking up a great deal of my time this summer but I must say I am really proud of what we have created to far.

If you want to get more details, check out:

7 Reasons You Need to Subscribe to our Podcast where we go into why we decided to go down this new digital pathway.

For our first episode we spoke to Rebekah “Bex Life” Borucki and discussed with the meditation maven about how to find time  to meditate within a busy life and also what to do when you are feeling like you are in a funk. She was equal parts wise and hilarious—just as you picture her to be!

In upcoming shows, we will have USA Beach Volleyball champ April Ross (!), Shape magazine editor-in-chief Elizabeth Goodman Artis, yoga expert Kristin McGee,  dietitian Frances Largeman-Roth and Refinery 29’s Kelsey Miller (“The Anti-Diet Project.”)

Would love any feedback you have for us and/or if you have any suggestions for guests you want to hear on our new show—let me know in the comments below!

Fit Bottomed Girls Hits:

As some of you know—I am a NYC contributor for Fit Bottomed Girls as well as their new podcast diva and these are some of my favorite stories I have worked on recently for them.

  • If you have ever wondered about taking a DNA test to find out your ancestry plus whatever details your DNA has to do with your health—then check out this piece where I tried three different DNA tests and the results that came in!
  • Do you have any old fitness trackers that you no longer need? Well then you can print out a form linked within this article and help out Recycle Health which is a fabulous non-profit helping to give folks who really need a tracker but perhaps can’t afford one. They will be monitored and researched by the good folks at Tufts University. Win/Win!
  • Okay, so this might be a little dated by now but in June I posted my favorite workout songs of 2016 so far. Some fun tracks are listed if you are looking for inspiration for your playlists.
  • Finally, in this feature I spoke with SUP Yoga expert Chelsea Roller of West Marine to talk about the best core moves you can do to prep for summer water sports such as surfing, kayaking, SUP yoga and water skiing. Check that out here!

Finally, I just wanted to mention that my friend Margo of She’s Nacho Mamas Blog and me just celebrated the two-year anniversary of our podcast with a brand new Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil episode. This is a “do-over” from our first few shows which were not up to our current standards. If you want to check it out—then here you go!

That’s it for me this time. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will be back with new playlist and more very soon. Promise!

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

Now here is some more information about Learning to Breathe Fire:

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness

A fascinating account of CrossFit’s origins, explosive grassroots growth, and emergence as a global phenomenon

When it comes to CrossFit, observers of the red-hot workout regimen tend to fall into two camps: true believers and those who can’t imagine what would possess someone to push that hard. Or, as journalist J. C. Herz puts it, for some people it’s a “lightning bolt: this is what I’ve been searching for. The rest think it’s a sign of mental illness.”

But there’s no denying that CrossFit has recently exploded in popularity, and become one of the world’s most fascinating sports subcultures. Today there are over 7,000 CrossFit gyms (or “boxes”) in dozens of countries, and millions of devoted participants—including elite special forces and first responders, along with plenty of regular Joes and Janes. In her new book, LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE: The Rise of CrossFit and the Primal Future of Fitness (Crown Archetype; $25.00; On Sale June 3, 2014), Herz delves deep into this “insane fitness cult,” vividly bringing it to life. In rich and riveting detail, she explores the science behind why CrossFit works, as well as the people who champion it and the fierce spirit that fuels them.

Herz traces CrossFit’s rise from a single underground gym in Santa Cruz to a global movement, going behind the scenes with the founders, star competitors, and everyday enthusiasts whose lives have been transformed by the training. Fusing action-packed sportswriting with riveting psychological profiles, she introduces readers to unforgettable characters such as CrossFit founder Greg Glassman, never-say-die Masters competitor Jerry Hill, and two-time Games champion Annie Thorisdottir—recently dubbed “the fittest woman on the planet” by Vogue. The characters in LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE run the gamut from surfer chicks to Navy SEALS. But they share an underlying ethos: they are willing to seek and endure discomfort, and their intense physical trials forge powerful group bonds. In the CrossFit parlance, “It never gets easier. You just get stronger.”

Modern-day stoicism, the ability to endure unpredictable adversity, is the key to CrossFit’s transformative power. Herz explains that traditional gym equipment, like the Stairmaster and the elliptical, is designed for minimally taxing, low-intensity, and passive exercise. By contrast, CrossFit workouts—called WODs (Workouts of the Day)—are known for their variety and intensity. They combine many different fitness elements, including gymnastics, sprints, and weightlifting, in an ever-changing fashion, forcing the body to adapt. Think of a WOD as a timed obstacle course meant to mimic what any of us might be called on to do in an emergency situation. The results are concrete and measurable, as CrossFitters find themselves doing things they never dreamed of being able to do, whether it’s a single pull-up or a 15-foot rope climb.

LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE also takes readers inside the excitement and drama of the annual CrossFit Games, which began as an informal throwdown on a California ranch and has evolved into a televised global event—a veritable Olympics of fitness. Designed to be a true test of human physical capacity, the Games are filled with competition, camaraderie, and superhuman feats of strength and endurance. Herz taps in to that fervor, chronicling the grueling challenges and spotlighting elite athletes as they battle it out in the arena.

As the Games demonstrate, CrossFit draws heavily on ancient forms of athletic ritual. It taps into the primal human experience and the power of the pack. We are geared to form tribes and spring into action as “first responders.” The experience of pushing our physical limits connects us to ancient hunters and warriors. In LEARNING TO BREATHE FIRE, Herz brilliantly connects the old and the new.

Got that?

  • Book vs. Movie Episode 1: So excited to announce that Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcast and I have launched our first podcast Book vs Movie. Last Friday we aired our first episode talking about both the film & movie version of Midnight In the Garden of Good & Evil (Kevin Spacey played him in the utterly forgettable Clint Eastwood film.)  We had a total blast and lost all track of time so we are recording part 2 this very week. Our hope is to get a few episodes in the can so we can have them available in iTunes. If you are our friend—please listen to us online at Blog talk radio in the meantime and please ‘like” our Facebook page. Check out my Vlog below to find out our next book/movie choice. (Hint, hint—get your little black dress ready for fun!)

  • The Blonde Vegan Changes Her Tune: I am NOT a vegan and happily get my protein from sustainable responsible meat vendors but I also follow a great many Vegan people on Facebook & Twitter as they are usually animal lovers and I am a fan of the furry critters.  Anyhoo—I was fascinated by the following post by Blogger Jordan of The Blonde Vegan who is absconding from the meat-free/pro-juicer lifestyle as it is causing her to suffer from Orthorexia which is a type of eating disorder where a person has an obsession with being “healthy.” To the point that they are not living happiest lives. I am not doing her justice (sorry Jordan!) please just read her post!

  • Eleven by Venus: So last week I had a very cool thing happen where I got to meet many of my fellow ambassadors for Venus Williams’ fashion/fitness line EleVen by Venus via a conference call and guess who was on the line with us—VENUS!!! I was so gaga when she greeted us that I squealed like a child. We had a special advanced look at their upcoming winter and spring collections and let’s just say my bank account is going to take a hit from it!

  • Jennifer Cohen Skinny is the New Strong Giveaway: Check out the Vlog below to get a gander at this week’s giveaway which will go live tomorrow. Skinny is the New Strong is a fitness book from rock-star trainer Jennifer Cohen and it does not even go on sale until September but you can win a copy from me—stay tuned for the details coming tomorrow.

  • The Greatest Dance Video of the Week:  I don’t know about you guys but I love me some to check out the latest silly clips on the Internet that I should nto miss and this one featuring a “90s” tribute dancer is one of the best things I have seen in a long time. Pump up the jams people!!

Now on to this week’s Vlog!

Got that? So tomorrow I will post the full details of the book giveaway—good luck! Thanks so much for checking back here!
