BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Counting Stars (2016)” Playlist (50 Minute-Ride)

Turns out they know each other!

Turns out they know each other!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I quickly threw together a playlist over the weekend and guess what? I managed to NOT include Avicii in one this time! (I will give you a moment to recover from the shock.)

Instead, I went back to a OneRepublic (their spelling, not mine) song that I love and did my usual “mix the old with the new” and see if magic can happen.  (The initial reviews are looking good so far!)

Let me know what you think and please leave some song suggestions in the comments below or on Twitter @BrooklynFitChik.

Oh! And just wanted to remind you I am co-host of the brand new  Fit Bottomed Girls podcast so come check us out! http://fitbottomedgirls.com/podcast/

Now let’s get to gettin’!

  • Counting Stars: OneRepublic

This song is a uniter not a divider because it makes the whole room happy when they hear it. Perfect for the warmup portion and gets things off to an energetic start.

  • Got Your Number: Serena Ryder

Canadian chanteuse Serena Ryder writes these kick-ass songs that are strong and bold. I really love to play this one as a “second song’ as it builds on the energy of the warmup.

  • Can’t Hold Us: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

This is the Macklemore I love—loud and brash without any sentimentality going on.

  • Promiscuous: Nelly Furtado & Timbaland

Some of my favorite jams comes from Timothy of Timbaland,

  • Waterfalls: TLC

I can’t think of any human being who doesn’t absolutely LOVE this song when I play it. I love using it for slow climbs in my spin classes.

  • Lust for Life: Iggy Pop

For this song I ask the students to perform some running out of the saddle drills but with some punk rock attitude. (Most attempt which is so adorable.)

  • Houdini: Foster the People

This is the most fun and bounciest tune in the whole ride. (LOVE it!)

  • Only: Nine Inch Nails

My inner 90s rock chick needs to hear some Trent Reznor from time to time and this song fits the bill. (Warning—there is a clean and an explicit version of this one!)

  • Hymn for the Weekend: Coldply (with Beyonce!)

I thought their paring at the last Superbowl was a fluke. Turns out Bey recorded with the boys of Coldplay a while ago. Who knew?

  • Starships: Nicki Minaj

Once again—a clean and explicit version exists here!

  • Tearing Me Up: Bob Moses

This is my new favorite, sexy slow jam and I am turning many of my students into Bob Moses fans. (You’re welcome, society at large!)

  • I Feel Love: Blue Man Group

We finish with a faster pace song before the cool down and people seem to dig this version of the Donna Summer classic.

  • Wildflowers: Tom Petty

The world is better because Tom is in it and let’s just all form a prayer circle around him so we do not lose another amazing musician this year!

That’s it for me this time. What are your new favorite tunes you think I should check out?

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Four Climbs & Some Foos” 50-Minute Ride 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

The “Four-Climbs & Some Foos” 50-Minute Ride Set

Four Climbs & Some Foos

Four Climbs & Some Foos

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week I was in the mood to rock out to some old 90s tunes while climbing hills so this playlist is a reflection of that notion. There are four “hills” here and I urge you to try to push yourself and the amount of resistance you use on a climb. Tire your legs out on the hills and then recover with intervals. Let me know what you think!

  • Middle Sea: Yuck

Here is a brand-new band from London with a kind of cheesy name. (Never commit to a band name that’s funny—that kind of stuff will get tiresome for them real soon!)

  • Use It: The New Pornographers

This is one of those fun “bouncy” songs that always seems to put people in a good mood.

  • Can’t Hold Us: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (featuring Ray Dalton)

I know some people are suffering from Macklemore exhaustion but this song is pretty damn great.

  • I Will Wait: Mumford & Sons

Every time I hear this song I forget that I am supposed to act too cool for Mumford & Sons. (They write catchy tunes, people!)

  • Apparitions: Matthew Good Band

I really wish I could find the video for this song but am happy we to have this clip to share today.

  • Come With Me Now: KONGOS

This is another new band with a strange name in ALL CAPS but regardless of how I feel about that choice—this stompy tune is fun to sing along to. “Come with me now!

  • Doin’ Time: Sublime

Cannot believe how old this song is (1997) or how old I am. (Need a nap now.)

  • Spaceman: The Killers

Not sure why more people don’t know this tune from The Killers because it kicks serious ass.

  • Clint Eastwood: Gorillaz

I use this for a slow, heavy climb in my classes.

  • No Light, No Light: Florence & the Machine

Thing song makes me want to grab a hairbrush and lip sync my little heart out.

  • My Hero: Foo Fighters

The Foo Fighters wrote this about Kurt Cobain which makes it extra poignant. (Plus, I still really have the hots for Dave Grohl.)

  • I Can’t Go For That: Hall & Oates

The Philly Soul duo is now in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame—about time!!!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick “Top Workout Songs of 2013” (Plus, A Few Stinkers!) #playlist #sweatpink 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S “Best of 2013”

Top 14 Workout Songs from 2013

(Plus, A Few Stinkers…)

Daft PunkjVampireWeekendkaty-perry-roar-promo-header-600x450

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s end of the year time and I am ready to look back on the “Best of’ 2013″ and the songs I most frequently played in my classes (I teach spin, core training and boot camp by the way.) Enjoy!

Also included a few tunes that I just could not get on board with this year at ALL. Let me know what you think!

  • Unbelievers: Vampire Weekend

This is one of those songs that always made me smile when it came on the radio. They are also from Brooklyn which is pretty damn cool!

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

This has everything that would normally drive me crazy in a dance song (cheesy lyrics, weird “voice” work, droning beats) but dammit I just love it to death. Come & Get It brings out the giddy 15 year-old in me and I proudly put it on my “Best of” list.

  • Came Back Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

So happy these guys are back and this particular song is so freakin’ motivating when you want to work harder and sprint faster. Get it now!

  • Supersoaker: Kings of Leon

I love this band because they know how to write hard-driving songs without being too “heavy” or dark. This is one of those tunes that will help you keep a steady pace.

  • Recovery: Frank Turner

Frank Turner has a fun, sexy British accent that he uses well in this happy, boppy song.

  • If So: Atlas Genius

If you are not familiar with Atlas Genius—they are an Australian pop rock band and they write some catchy tunes and this chipper number had me from the first note.

  • Out of My League: Fitz & the Tantrums

Fitz & the Tantrums have recorded some of the most fun and bounciest songs I have ever heard in my life and this one in particular gave me the “happies.”

  • Royals: Lorde

I know some people are having Royals fatigue but I will never forget the first time I heard this song and how much it just caught my attention.

  • Roar: Katy Perry

This is NOT my favorite video (cheesy McCheese, geez Louise!) However, listening to Roar always makes me want to be a teenager again so I can dance around my bedroom and sing along to this anthem.

  • Timeless: The Airborne Toxic Event

Sure it is a tad overwrought and earnest but so the hell what? It’s a great song and perfect for either a steady climb or a cool down.

  • Get Lucky: Daft Punk (Featuring Pharrell Williams)

Six minutes of mindless fun and a beat that is just so damn catchy. (Wish they were not being so rude to my imaginary boyfriend Stephen Colbert.)

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

I included this one from The Sheepdogs in three different playlists this year because I lerve it so darn much. Go Canada!

  • My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark: Fall Out Boy

I never thought I would see the day this band appeared on my iPod but this song kicks butt!

  • Thrift Shop: Mackelmore & Ryan Lewis

The version full of cursing makes my heart soar. Love you Mackelmore!

And now my picks for the “4 Stinkers of 2013″

  • Blurred Lines: Robin Thicke

Okay—yes, the song is insanely catchy and I did include it for one of my playlists this past year. However, after listening to Robin Thicke being interviewed on The Howard Stern Show I realize this guy is a total sexist dunce and he does not deserve a second of my time. (And Blurred Lines sounds like a Marvin Gaye rip-off!)

  • Applause: Lady Gaga

I happen to love Lady Gaga and will defend her to anyone who dares to speak in a negative way about her. (So what if she is pretentious? The woman is a gifted, national treasure!) However, this song just did nothing for me. Blah, boring, snooze. (Sorry Gaga! The rest of the album is fantastic!)

  • Work B***H: Britney Spears

The b-word has been abused way too often in music lately (honestly, sometimes I would rather hear the c-word instead!)  I reject this lame offering from Britney Jean not only for that but also for the horrible monotonous beat that made me want to punch a kitten. (And I am a crazy cat lady!)

  • Bound 2: Kanye West

Oof—this one is just indefensible. (But the “alternate” version is a gift from the comedy gods.)

That’s all I have for now. Let me know your best/worst for 2013. Also, what music are you looking forward to in 2014? Bring it!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick “Trojans” Playlist: Macklemore, Metric, Jack White, Kanye West, Foos & More 12

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S WORKOUT PLAYLIST

“Trojans” Playlist 50-Minute Ride

(This is for my friend Jennifer Meyer)

(This is for my friend Jennifer Meyer)

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am trying to get better about putting up my playlists as people seem to enjoy them so let us not dilly dally—okay? Today’s ride features a few of my current favorite songs plus a 7- minute climb using an eerie Dave Matthews number from the 90s.

Do I have you intrigued? Then let’s get to it!

  • Trojans: Atlas Genius

I know absolutely nothing about this band but this song caught my attention right away and I knew I could start a ride with it.

  • Desire: U2

Desire is the prefect “second” song but it begins with a crashing guitar sound and delivers the perfect, driving beat for 3 minutes.

  • Youth Without Youth: Metric

Metric came to NYC last year and I could not get tickets—grrrrr!

  • Keep the Car Running: Arcade Fire

This might be my favorite song by them but all of their music is pretty great.

  • Thrift Shop: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

The version full of cursing makes my heart soar. Most favorite new song on the list by far!

  • Elephant: Tame Impala

I like doing out of the saddle climbing with this weird little ditty.

  • Gold Digger: Kanye West

Please get the clean version if you play it in class! It is still plenty filthy, don’t worry!

  • Troublemaker: Weezer

I think the Red album is my favorite from them.

  • The Pretender: Foo Fighters

The Foos are the best with making super-fast songs that make everyone work their asses off with sprinting.

  • Crabbuckit: K-OS

Please come back to NYC K-OS!!

  • I’m Shakin: Jack White

I am starting to become sexually attracted to Jack White. What does that say about me?

  • Don’t Drink the Water: Dave Matthews Band

This song is perfect for a long, slow climb and has kind of a spooky sound.

  • Call Me Maybe: Carly Rae Jepsen

It only took me about 10 months but I think I get why this tune is so popular. Yay me!

  • Madness: Muse

Everyone tells me that Muse is the ultimate live band. What do you think?

So what do you think of my list? Remember to send me your favorite tunes in the comments below.
