Hello from Freezing Brooklyn!

Hello from Freezing Brooklyn!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? I have a whole bunch of news & notes and I will not waste a minute getting it to you. Don’t worry—the Vlog is back next week with a whole new giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

  • Fit Bottomed Eats “Power Ball for Runners” Recipe: I am lucky enough to be friendly with the amazing dietician Frances Largeman-Roth who sits in the front of my spin class every Sunday morning. (Love my first-row achievers!) Frances contributes this yummy Pre-Workout Powerballs recipe to another Blog I write for—Fit Bottomed Eats. What’s really great about her recipe (if you are a mom) is that they “dairy and nut-free—they pass the school test!”
  • Men’s Journal Talks About the Dangers of Sitting: Almost ten years ago I quit corporate life to work for myself which I assumed would make me healthier but without the travel of the commute every day—in reality, I was sitting even more hours in a row than at a formal office. At first I switched to a standing desk which for sure is helpful but doesn’t challenge my core to be stronger and it made my posture even worse as I just leaned into my laptop. My friend and fitness guru Elizabeth Pongo recommended I try a wobble board to challenge my sense of balance whenever I work at my desk. Wow—what a difference it makes!

(Elizabeth is one of the experts quoted in this excellent feature in Men’s Journal article all about the health risks of sitting and what you can do to counterbalance them. Good stuff!)

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Be sure to check back next week for my next Vlog post and giveaway!

What Have the “Mens” Taught Us This Month? Recaps of @MensFitness @MensHealthMag @MensJournal 6

What Are the “Men’s” Teaching Us This Month?

Recaps of Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and Men’s Journal

 Hi Gang!

The September issues are back and I for one could not be happier—(seriously, summer magazines are just not that interesting.) So today I am devoting my recap to three of the top men’s titles and what they to offer is this month. You’re welcome!

Let’s get to this thing!

Men’s Fitness: September 2013

  •  Novak Djokovic: The Serbian tennis pro is on the cover right now and he talks about his lifelong for all kinds of breads and pastas made him feel sluggish and sickly until adopting a gluten-free lifestyle. He says the path to good health is by changing your diet one step at a time.
  • “10 Most Bizarre Fitness Competitions” Have you heard of the “Wee Men” Australian Dwarf Tossing competition or the “Left Rook” Chess Boxing in London? Check out this article for some more unusual competitions.
  • “Your Own Fitness Trend” Men’s Fitness shows how to take bits and pieces of fitness workouts to make your unique routine.
  • “Natural Selection” Meal suggestions that are high in protein and veggies (my favorite!)
  • “10 Steps to an 8-Pack Abs” Can ladies get these? (Not that I would ever put in the time for it but I am just curious.)

Men’s Health: September 2013

  • Tom Brady: Of course the New England Patriots quarterback is on the cover of the Fall Fashion issue—he is sexy and married to a supermodel. Duh! (By the way—go Niners!)
  •  “6 Skills Leaders Know” I will give you three that they list: “Evolve Every Day,” “Lean on Your Team” and “Blaze a Trail”
  • “The Medicine Ball Blaster” Trainer Dan John offers ideas to use a medicine ball in your workouts. (Using some of these in my bootcamp classes for sure…)
  • “Weird Body Noises Explained” Men’s Health uncovers the medical reasons why your knees and ankles pop and you have a ringing  in your ear (among other annoying sounds you might be dealing with right now.)
  • “Worst-Face Scenarios” All kinds of tips for getting rid of skin damage. (I didn’t realize men worry about these things!)
  • “8 Secrets Your Hospital Keeps” If you are terrified of hospitals (and I certainly am) this article will make you stay up at night. For example, your doctor’s hands may be filthy and the hospital food could be even worse than fast food. YIKES!!
  • “How to Sell a Miracle” Even more medical news to scare the reader! Quackery still exists in the “medicine” world and too many people are distrustful of “big medicine” causing unnecessary illness. Oy!
  • “A New War on Sugar” Basically humans are hard-wired to love sugar more than is good for us and many of us are getting fat from it. Here are tips for cutting back on the sweet stuff.
  • “Barefoot Running Stumbles” First of all, those”barefoot running” shoes that were all the rage two years ago looked stupid–we agree on that, right? Now it looks as if they cause more harm than good (allegedly.)

Men’s Journal: September 2013

  •  “Style & Design 2013″ We are talking cars, gear, kitchen gadgets, watches, office chairs, and more in the Men’s Journal annual style & design issue. (Men do love their toys, no?)
  • “24-Hour Sports Rumble” The Fox Sports network aims to take down ESPN by adding celebrity hosts (Regis Philbin?) and having a more fun approach to sports. (Um, okay. But they will never top “30 for 30”  in my opinion.)
  • “The Other White Meat” Recipe ideas for my formerly most-hated vegetable—cauliflower. (Dice and cook it in olive oil and garlic, people!)
  • “The People’s Coast” Must go back to Oregon again—the coastline is beautiful and open to the public!
  • “Massacre in the Himalayans” Holy sh*t! This past June ten mountain climbers were killed in the Himalayas by terrorists with their sole survivor, Zhang Jingchuan, left to talk about the effects on the local community.
  • Sonny Rollins: The jazz legend is featured here in an excellent interview.
  • Nathan Plank: The founder and CEO of Under Armour (which makes great gear by the way) talks about his business ethics and bringing jobs to Baltimore.

What Did We Learn This Month? @MensHealthMag @MensFitness @MensJournal 6

What Are the “Men’s” Teaching Us This Month?

Recaps of Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and Men’s Journal

Hi Gang!

It’s been ages since I devoted this space to just the “Men’s” titles so why the hell not break it out again today? If you are ready—I am ready.

Let’s get to this thing!

Hugh Jackman photographed by Ben Watts

Hugh Jackman photographed by Ben Watts

Men’s Fitness: June 2013

  •  Hugh Jackman: Wolverine!! The buff actor follows the “8-Hour Diet” plan which means he eats up to 6000 calories per day in an 8-hour window of time and works out like a madman to get into A-Lister shape.  Honestly—is there anyone more charming than Hugh Jackman? No. Such. Thing.
  • “10 Diets We Won’t Be Trying This Summer” I love how snarky the “men’s” magazines can be and this page made me crack up. For example, about “The Air Diet” –Perfect for guys who love cooking but hate the annoying eating part that inevitably follows… Well done Men’s Fitness!
  • “Fitlandia” Portland, Oregon is declared by Men’s Fitness as the “Fittest City” for men. See how your city ranked here.  (El Paso, TX is the fattest by the way.)
  • “7 Ultimate Guy Getaways” Ideas for dudes who want to take the average week off and make it the experience of a lifetime.
  • “The Fascia and the Furious” If you own a foam roller (and if not, why the hell not?) then you know how important it is to keep your fascia (the tight band around the outside of your legs) in top shape.
  • “6 Week Slimdown” A workout you can take to the outdoors to get in the best shape of your life.
  • “The Wolverine Workout” Hugh Jackman’s trainer David Kingsbury offers his classic strength-building workout. Wolverine!!!!

Chris Pine photographed by Ture Lillegraven

Men’s Health: June 2013

  • Chris Pine: Kirk!  Chris Pine has survived tough reviews of his work (being called a “chia pet” by one critic for his work in Princess Diaries 2—ouch!) and he is now a hot, in-demand actor who happens to play one of the most famous Captains in history. You can try out his personal workout which is featured in the magazine. (FYI-I would probably have sex with him if he was obliging.)
  • Ed Helms: One of my favorite comedic actors is also a bluegrass musician (who knew?) and is about to embark on a whole new stage of his life after The Office and The Hangover.
  • “Her Sex Lies Exposed” Three women were asked questions while hooked to a polygraph (which are total nonsense by the way) and asked how they really feel about sex and stuff.
  • “Bar Exam” The latest health bars are rated here for best snacking potential that is also healthy.
  • “How to do Everything Better” Men’s Health talks about how to do a whole bunch of things “better” including waging a water balloon wars and getting critters out of your home.
  • “Be a Pop Star” Awwww, here we get advice on men can bet better father’s to their children based on the age and development level of the child.
  • “Win the War in Your Gut” Having fought the “gut” battle in the past—I can personally attest to how important it is to pay attention to the good& bacteria in your belly.

Keith Richards photographed by Peter Lindbergh

Keith Richards photographed by Peter Lindbergh

Men’s Journal: July 2013

  • Keith Richards: True story—once when I was teenager my mother called me into the living room yelling “you need to see this!” Turns out Keith Richards was being interviewed on television and she could not understand “how the dead can talk.” Well Keith is STILL alive and kicking thankyouverymuchmom and he is rather sanguine about getting older and still rockin’.
  • “Attack on Everest” Holy sh*t! Sherpas are starting to attack climbers on Mount Everest. The topic of overcrowding in the famous mountain is explored here.
  • “How to Blow $100 on Fireworks” This is NOT an article you would find in a woman’s magazine!
  • “The Complex Truth About Low Testosterone” Hormone replacement is being talked about with greater frequency in the media as a wonder cure—but there still isn’t any consensus on who actually needs to use it and when.
  • “Paleo Converts” More and more distance athletes are trying out the Paleo meal plan to gain an edge in competitions. But do they actually work?
  • “50 Great American Places” Looking for vacation ideas? Try one of these groovy spots you can find in the good old U.S.A.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 40: Talking about @BexLife @CavegirlConfections @CanyonRanch & Facing Fears! 8

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog

Episode 40

Featuring: Overcoming Fear, Bex Life, Cavegirl Confections, Happy Feet and Prezi Presentations

"Me afraid? Ha!"

“Me afraid? Ha!”

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you my lovelies? Good? Glad to hear that. This week I have been busy with getting my presentation all sorted out for my portion of the “Writing the Perfect Pitch” workshop for this year’s Fitbloggin and I must admit—I have the case of the nerves! This isn’t my first time speaking in front of people but it IS my first time using a program called Prezi and I just want to be worthy of sharing the stage with the superb Alexandra Williams and Kymberly Williams-Evans of Fun & Fit.org and the sublime Jamie Walker of Fit Approach. (Biting my nails in anticipation!)

I know it will be a great presentation and I am so excited to get a chance to help my fellow Fit Bloggers get their message out there. So I guess you can call these the “good” kind of nerves to have because it means I care and will give it my all?

However– I am having old feelings returning to my life and I do not think it has anything to do with what could be an immediate “unknown” in my life (presenting at Fitbloggin.). Rather, on a much deeper level I am incredibly anxious about the my uncertainty of my future. Don’t be alarmed—I am not sick or in dire straits (thank goodness!) but the last time I woke up every day feeling the way I do I quit my high powered job, went freelance and started teaching spin classes in my “free time.”

Hang on to your knickers everyone because I feel changes coming my way—big time!

These past few months my life has been twisting and turning in new directions with old stuff falling away and new things trying to make their way in and for some reason I have felt very “stuck.” Do you ever get like that? Like on the one hand you know you need to shake things up in your life in order to get where you need to be but are just so damn afraid of anything “new?” I really need to “unstuck” myself and embrace the wild and wooly aspects of living without fear.

Do you know about Bex of the fabulous Bex Life.com? (Of course you do—she is a goddess!) Anyhoo—Bex recently posted on her site Learn to Fall In Love With Fear and that is the motto I am going to use to get me through the next few months. I am going to learn to embrace uncertainty and anticipate good things coming into my life.

Who is with me? Let’s do this thing together dammit!

Now with that sorted out I wanted to take a moment and congratulate my good friend Marrilee Wilson of Halifax, Nova Scotia for becoming a certified yoga instructor through Moksha Yoga Halifax. (So happy you are finally making it to NYC this week!)

And now for this week’s Blog post:

  • I talk about dealing with fear about the future.
  • My ongoing love for Cavegirl Confections—seriously you people need to try this stuff. (http://www.cavegirlconfections.com/)
  • The “Happy Feet” program that is starting up soon at the Canyon Ranch spa and includes a groovy new item call Sole Engergizers.
  • My latest magazine reviews of Bicycling, Prevention, Men’s Fitness, Men’s Health and Men’s Journal.

That’s it for me this week folks. Talk to you all next week!!
