  • Book vs. Movie Episode 4: The insane partnership of the “Margos” continues with our latest episode of our Book vs. Movie podcast.  This week in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary we decided to delve into all things “Gump” by talking about the differences between the book and movie version of Forrest Gump by author Winston Groom.  How different are they from each other you ask? Whoo boy—they are worlds apart but each has their own unique charm. If you have some time—click on the link and take a listen. Brooklyn Fit Chick Review: @NASM “Weight Loss Specialist” Certification 19

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK REVIEW!!

THE NASM WEIGHT LOSS SPECIALIST PROGRAM

 NASM LOGO

 Hi Gang!

Two years ago I passed the NASM Personal Training Certification (National Academy of Sports Medicine) which is one of the biggest personal achievements of my life. Trust me—this is NOT hyperbole. I studied for weeks for that notoriously difficult exam and it is a source of pride for me to say “NASM? Oh yeah—I passed it on my first attempt.” Yay me!

Getting certified was tough enough but staying certified is an almost bigger challenge as it requires I take a certain number of continuing education courses in order to stay current which is, quite frankly, a huge pain in my butt schedule-wise. NASM offers several day-long workshops throughout the year to earn much-needed points but they are mostly held on weekends and generally running from 8 am to 4 pm ALL DAY. The whole day. My poor old brain can’t handle any learning past a couple of hours at a time these days so I find these day-long seminars very trying. Plus they occur on the days I teach and earn most of my money. So what’s a girl to do?

Luckily I was contacted by NASM to try out their new online Weight Loss Specialist course to help me earn 1.9 (out of 2) points—score! (Note—they did pay for my course but the opinions are my own.)

Here is some of the information about the Weight Loss Specialist course that is not based on opinion but rather from their press release:

“The Weight Loss Specialist (WLS) program is a 15-hour, online course earning the fitness professional 1.9 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon completion of the exam. Never before have so many weight-loss resources been available in one concentrated credential, providing health and fitness professionals applicable programs that turn into life-changing results for their clients.

At the core of the new Weight Loss Specialist course is an advanced curriculum backed by years of research and proven scientific analysis. A few key areas of study include:

  • The psychology and physiology of weight management
  • How to avoid weight-loss plateaus
  • Dispelling well-known weight-loss myths
  • Methods for lifetime weight-loss success

We are cutting through the diet and weight-loss noise, providing Certified Personal Trainers and top-level fitness professionals with a new approach to weight loss. The Weight Loss Specialist is a revolutionary course that combines proven methodologies and techniques with ways to incorporate our proprietary Optimum Performance Training™ (OPT™) model for continued career success,” said President of the National Academy of Sports Medicine Andrew Wyant.”

Once you register online to take the course you will see that there are 12 “modules” for each section which includes downloadable (and printable) information. This is what they look like altogether:

Nasom stack

Plus each module has a video to watch and explain its subject.

NASM Screen

Are you curious? Well then, here are some of my takeaways after participating in this program…

Pros and cons of NASM Weight Loss Specialist Certification:

Pros:

  • The test can be done completely online and on your own time. This is a 15-hour (!) exam with TONS of material to get through so I found it very convenient to go through it in two-three hour chunks at a time.
  • The material is top notch. NASM prides itself on being a science-based organization and they make sure to differentiate what is provable in terms of weight loss theories and what is merely speculation.
  • You have three chances to pass their online exam (100 questions in 90 minutes!) which means if test taking makes you anxious (as it does in my case) you have a few chances to get it right.
  • The videos for all of the chapters in the course explain each topic clearly and concisely.
  • Working online means working at home for me so I don’t have to travel to a location to take a seminar which would add to an already long day.

Cons:

  • 15 Hours is still 15 hours and it took me a few weeks to get through all of the material.
  • Some of the subjects were hard for me to grasp right away and I would have appreciated an in-person instructor to guide me on them.
  • The total cost is $499 which is prohibitive for some budgets though you can pay in installments and the certification is good for a lifetime.

Anyhoo—I was very happy with my only NASM experience and recommend to anyone who has issues with getting to continuing education classes and seminars.

Have you done any online courses? What has been your experience with them?

Talk soon!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 31

Featuring: NASM Weight Loss Specialist Test, Cavegirl Confections and Kristine Kidd Cookbook Giveaway

WeeknightGluten_CVR_FINAL

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

So is it spring yet? I don’t mean to sound like a cry baby but I am getting pretty damn sick and tired of this cold weather. Can we please get some warm rays on the East Coast? Honestly, I have been wearing the same damn parka every day since Thanksgiving and cannot take it anymore! Okay—done complaining.

Now—on to my Vlog post this week. Just a word of warning–I start with kind of a bummer message but it gets much better as I get into it. You will see for yourself..

Featured on my Vlog this week:

  • I (finally) took the NASM Weight Loss Specialist exam and will give you a preview of my review of the program (is that a decent sentence or should I have started over?)
  • My friend Claudette’s new company Cavegirl Confections which features the yummiest gluten-free Paleo treats on the market. In particular I recommend the Cherry Pie Bites, the chocolate hazelnut granola, and the yummiest almond butter I have ever eaten in my life (which is truly saying something.) Claudette is a pastry trained chef who makes every order by hand and all of her products are gluten-free, grain-free and dairy-free. You can read more about her brand on my friend Shanna’s Blog Pineapple and Coconut.
  • My Kristine Kidd cookbook giveaway Weeknight Gluten Free and Weeknight Fresh & Fast which is a part of her partnership with Williams Sonoma. Kidd was the food editor for Bon Appétit magazine for over 20 years and she certainly knows a thing or two about creating delicious recipes. You can follow her Blog here.

Now let’s check out today’s Vlog post!

Here is more information the Kristine Kidd cookbooks:

Williams-Sonoma

WEEKNIGHT FRESH & FAST

Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week

By Kristine Kidd

If you’re as busy as author Kristine Kidd, the daily “What’s for dinner tonight?” question can be daunting.  In Weeknight Fresh & Fast, the former Bon Appétit editor’s latest book, Kidd shows readers how effortless it is to make flavorful and nutritious meals from scratch – even with a busy schedule.  Weeknight Fresh & Fast features more than 100 delicious and beautifully photographed dinner ideas, inspired and organized by seasonal offerings.

Using fresh produce as the foundation, Kidd transforms just picked ingredients into delicious dishes:  A lemony sauté of chicken cutlets, asparagus, and sugar snaps is perfect in the springtime; quickly grilled lamb chops with chunky peach salsa make the most of summer’s abundance; a comforting risotto with earthy vegetables and creamy blue cheese is a creative way to highlight fall’s bounty; juicy roasted salmon topped with tangy grapefruit and avocado relish makes the most of winter’s citrus.

Chapters open with advice about the fresh ingredients and cooking methods best suited to the time of year.  Also included are ideas for quick vegetable sides and fruit desserts, as well as advice on stocking the pantry.  Clever tips throughout Weeknight Fresh & Fast offer enticing ways to round out meals, customize recipes to personal tastes, menu-planning strategies, and helpful ideas for turning leftovers into new suppers later in the week.

Weeknight Fresh & Fast illustrates that there is enough time in the day to prepare food that is healthy, does not take a lot of time, nor require a lot of preparation or clean-up.  It offers far better choices than eating takeout or hitting the drive-thru and helps readers put a delicious, wholesome meal on the table night after night.  With this solution-packed title on the book shelf, busy people will have a reliable road map for eating well every night, no matter what the day brings.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: As the food editor of Bon Appétit magazine for more than 20 years, Kristine Kidd was responsible for filling its pages with delicious recipes and keeping her devoted readership up to date with evolving food trends.  Based in Los Angeles, Kidd has written five cookbooks and is regularly sought out as an expert on home cooking.

And:

Williams-Sonoma Weeknight Gluten Free

Simple, Healthy Meals for Every Night of the Week

By Kristine Kidd

Latest surveys show that one third of adults are interested in avoiding or cutting back on gluten in their diets. Major publications such as The New York Times and The Huffington Post are responding with articles and recipes aimed at embracing the gluten-free lifestyle. Even superstar chefs like Thomas Keller are customizing their menus with a nod towards the benefits of cooking without gluten. Leading the trend, bestselling food writer and editor Kristine Kidd and Williams-Sonoma have teamed up to bring you gluten-free recipes that add to your health without sacrificing the flavors you love.

Emphasizing quick, flavor-packed meals, Kristine transforms easy-to-find fresh ingredients into dishes like grilled wild salmon fillets atop satisfying chickpeas enhanced with Moroccan spices; seared steak and peppers simmered in a creamy sauce and then folded into warm corn tortillas for family-friendly tacos; seared scallops and orange-avocado salsa spooned over herbed quinoa; elbow pasta baked with cheese, chard, and crisp breadcrumbs for a tempting take on macaroni and cheese—that no one will guess is gluten free.

Like other special diets, gluten-free cooking is for people making healthy choices about what they want to eat. However, it does take some planning and education to pull off a gluten-free menu that doesn’t feel like it’s “missing something.” Weeknight Gluten Free solves these common issues for the frustrated home cook, taking the guesswork out of cooking gluten-free food that retains all of its original character.

Don’t miss this sequel to bestselling companion Weeknight Fresh & Fast, and get Weeknight Gluten Free for a straightforward approach to gluten-free cooking that you’ve been waiting for.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am very excited to present this week’s Vlog and my latest book giveaway as I was inspired by my Blogger bud Keri of Fit Views Blog who helped me get into the Paleo lifestyle in the first place. Keri recently picked her “Top 5 Paleo Cookbooks” which inspired me to do my own list of my favorite Paleo tomes that I have leaned on and been inspired by these last few months. But I am getting ahead of myself—let’s start with what is on the Vlog today…

Episode 21 of the Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Notes:

Being the lucky gal I am—they asked me to try out their eLearning workshop “Weight Loss Specialist” which I am about halfway through now. (Thank you NASM!) I plan to write more about it this week but in the meantime—check it out for yourself here: NASM “Weight Loss Specialist”

My “Top 7 Paleo Books” List plus My Latest Giveaway—It Starts with Food. I talk about my favorite Paleo books of the last year with many, it turns out, from the catalog of book publisher Victory Belt Victory Belt publishers. If you are either a newbie to Paleo looking for information or just someone looking for healthy, clean recipes to add to your meal plan—check out my suggestions in the Vlog below.

More Information on My “Top 7 Paleo Books”:
Robb Wolf Paleo Solutions: For me it all began with Robb’s book which I followed nonstop during my first month of eating completely clean (Whole 30) and I can honestly say I have not felt this good in years. Robb is a no nonsense kind of guy who also has a popular podcast that I quite enjoy—The Paleo Solution Podcast. In the clip I mention I followed his book’s meal plan 80% of the time but I want you to know I was strictly Paleo the Whole 30 Days! I just made some slight adjustments with ingredients as there are certain things I do not eat (salmon and anchovies for example.) Check out all of Robb’s work here at his official web site: Robb Wolf

• Diane Sanfillipo Practical Paleo: I just adore this book and the recipes here are to die for. She offers sound advice plus handy pull-out sheets to keep on your fridge and keep you on track. The Spaghetti Squash Bolognese recipe is divine! Be sure to check out her Blog Balanced Bites as well Balanced Bites

Dr. William Davis Wheat Belly: I can’t pretend to you all that I understand every single word in this book (the medical stuff goes over my head sometimes) but I was impressed with Wheat Belly. You can check out his Dr. Davis’ Blog here Wheat Belly Blog

Melissa Joulwann Well Fed: Oh my—the recipes here are so yummy and good here. This one I have on my Kindle but might have to buy a hard copy as well to keep in my kitchen library. Melissa’s Blog is called “The Clothes Make the Girl” Melissa Joulwann Blog

Tammy Credicott Paleo Indulgences: Over the holidays I went a little baking-happy and made quite a few yummy treats from this book. Tammy’s Blog is called “The Healthy Gluten-Free Life”  Tammy Crdicott Blog

Amelia Simons: Paleolithic Slow Cooker Soups & Stews: Wow! I just got this cookbook on my Kindle and as I am typing this out there is an Italian Soup cooking in my slow cooker and making me crazy. Seriously, I might just have to turn it on “High” so I can have it sooner! Amelia’s books are featured at:  Amelia Simons Amazon.com page

Dallas & Melissa Hartwig It Starts with Food: I had this book as a giveaway back in November and it was so damn popular I had to bring it back. This is one of those “Paleo Bibles” I think everyone interested in the lifestyle plan should read. Check out the details of the book below and how to win your own copy right below…

It Starts with Food
Discover the Whole30® and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways

by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig

Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, the popular health and nutrition bloggers famous for their tough love, have helped tens of thousands of people develop a healthier relationship with food through their underground Whole30® program. Now, their program has gone mainstream with the release of their first book, It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways (Victory Belt Publishing, $26.95).
It Starts with Food outlines a clear, balanced, sustainable plan to permanently change the way people eat, and transform their lives in profound and unexpected ways. “Our recommendations are based around the framework of a Paleo diet, but it’s not about history…it’s about health in today’s modern food landscape,” explains author, Certified Sports Nutritionist and Whole30 co-founder, Melissa Hartwig. “Our program achieves amazing results in just 30 days by giving readers a clear and simple plan focused on eating nutrient-dense, fast food, 100-calorie pack, eat-on-the-fly era, our book introduces a new perspective for how people approach each mealtime.”
Through their program, thousands of people have reported the astounding elimination of a variety of symptoms related to lifestyle-related conditions like diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and fatty liver disease; autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s and celiac disease, and psychological conditions like bipolar disorder, depression, and ADHD.
The Hartwigs detail not just the “how” of their Whole30 program in their new book, but also the all-important “why.” It Starts with Food reveals how specific foods may have a negative impact on how people look, feel, and live—in ways that many never associate with their diets. They address psychological attachments to unhealthy foods, and offer a strategy for banishing unhealthy cravings, habits, and patterns.’
The capstone of the program is their powerful nutritional reset—the Whole30—designed to support the immune system, heal the gut, and restore a healthy metabolism.
The end result is a balanced, sustainable way of eating that promotes a healthier relationship with food, optimal health, and radically improved quality of life.
Co-author Dallas Hartwig, a licensed physical therapist and certified sports nutritionist, agrees, saying, “Food can change your life, and It Starts with Food will show you how.”
