Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Wake Me Up” Avicii, Bruno Mars, Foos & More 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Wake Me Up” (50 Minutes)

Avicii

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Sometimes I look at an old playlist and it will feature a song or two that just don’t move me anymore. Know what I mean? In fact those now dreaded songs will drive me crazy enough to scrap said playlist from my iPod Classic and start over. (Why, oh why, did I not think to buy two of them last year? They go for almost $900 now!)

So today’s playlist is completely suck-free (IMHO) and it will get you good and sweaty when you hit the gym. You’re welcome!

  • Wake Me Up: Avicii

Normally I am not a big fan of “club” or “house” music but dammit if this Swedish dreamboat knows how to write the PERFECT warmup tunes. Try this one for yourself and tell me if it doesn’t get you into the mood to move.

  • Since U Been Gone: Kelly Clarkson

Admittedly I am a little late to the party here but Kelly Clarkson is a fantastic singer and whoever picks her tunes for her—bravo!

  • All the Small Things: blink-182

Just about everyone in the room songs along when I play this in my classes and the video is sublime.

  • The Pretender: Foo Fighters

If you know me then you know that I need me some Foos on a regular basis.

  • Sunday Morning: k-os

K-os is a Canadian musician that needs to catch on here in the States. Anyhoo—this song is fun for running out of the saddle sprints.

  • Get Up: James Brown

A really complicated man (to say the least!) who was also incredibly talented, James Brown is his best and funkiest here.

  • Dancing With Myself: Billy Idol

My inner 80s kid still loves Billy Idol. LOVE!

  • Uptown Funk: Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars

Is there any better new song out there right now? It can’t be possible. And if Uptown Funk doesn’t make you want to go dancing—then you have no soul.

  • Love Interruption: Jack White

My super weird crush on Jack White continues at a feverish pace…

  • Heavy Metal Drummer: Wilco

Wilco is always on my iPod and this is my favorite song by them.

  • Starships: Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj is a bit of an individualist and this is her anthem to those of us who like to outside the mainstream.

  • The Perfect Life: Moby with Wayne Coyne

This is one of those long “majestic” climb tunes that helps to end the road on a high note.

  • Fade Into You: Mazzy Star

A really nice 90s gem that is perfect for cooling down, love Mazzy Star!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

(If you are reading this on a different site or a different feed than Brooklyn Fit Chick, it has been taken without permission.)

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 98: Fitness “Meet & Tweet,” “Tips of the Scales” Podcast, The Skinny Gut Diet Giveaway 10

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #98

Tips of the Scale Podcast, New Tunes for Playlist, Fitness Meet & Tweet, People Who Leave Their Crap by the Stereo in Class

Plus: The Skinny Gut Diet Giveaway!

1 skinny gut

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I had a crazy busy week and will soon be going on a quick business trip but fear not—I am still posting as often as I can and offering a new book giveaway as well. Woo hoo! So let’s all take a deep breath and then dive right into my quick hits this week plus my SkinnyGutDiet.com book giveaway by Brenda Watson C.N.C.

  • Tips of the Scale Podcast: At Fitbloggin this past summer I was lucky enough to meet Sam Lomeli who hosts his own podcast Tips of the Scale. In case you are not familiar with him (and dammit—you should be!) Sam interviews an array of “real” people each episode who are either currently dealing with weight loss issues or have overcome them and want to inspire others. Many of my Fitbloggin pals have been on his show including Brandi of Diets in Review, Martinus of 300 Pounds and Running and Alan of Sweating Until Happy. Sam is a guy who really cares about helping people get healthy and I encourage you to subscribe to his show on iTunes and follow him on Twitter @TipsOfTheScale podcast.
  • Need New Tunes for Playlists! I realize I made this call-out before but I really meant it this time—I am desparate for new music to use in my group fitness classes. (Also on assignment for Fit Bottomed Girls and they are itchin for me to get off my Gluteus Maximus and get a few out to them as well!) So pretty please—just leave me one tune below in the comments section below. One song that makes you feel happy & motivated when working out. I would appreciate it SO much!
  • Fitness Magazine “Meet & Tweet Event” Where are my East Coast fitness Bloggers at? How many of you are going to be at the Fitness Magazine Meet & Tweet this week? It’s the THIRD annual event and I am lucky enough to have been invited to attend and I so want to make sure I say “hey” to all of my peeps there. (My friend Namaste Mari teases me for being a notorious bailer of events but I want to say “hi” to YOU so let me know to keep an eye out for ya!)
  • Students Leaving Their Crap by the Teacher’s Area: This is more of a vent/rant than a new post but at one place where I teach I have a student who leaves her purse right by me while I am teaching and it really cheeses me off. Not sure WHY it bothers me so much but she just ASSUMES she can leave anything she wants by me when I am teaching and maybe it will be safe there? I have no idea but no one else does this and it is driving me nuts. I will explain more in the Vlog but any advice you can give me to handle this tactfully will also be appreciated. (I am not kidding—this is a real problem I am having.)
  • The Skinny Gut Diet Book Giveaway: Are you interested in proper digestion and also like to win things? Well get ready to enter to win The Skinny Gut Diet by Brenda Watson who is a certified nutrition counselor and has the most amazing Twitter name @brendapoopscoop. If you are interested in winning your own copy (open to the Continental U.S. only, sorry!) then check out my Vlog below. Good luck and happy pooping!

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

The Skinny Gut Diet

By Brenda Watson, C.N.C

In your digestive tract live100 trillion bacteria, which make up 90 percent of the cells in your body and are the real reason you gain or lose weight. Everyone has a unique balance of good and bad bacteria that either keeps them healthy or leaves them susceptible to disease. This same balance contributes to weight gain or to weight loss. By increasing the “be skinny” bacteria and decreasing the “fat” bacteria, you can finally achieve your ideal weight—for good.

In THE SKINNY GUT DIET (on sale 10/7/14, Harmony Books), New York Times bestselling author, certified nutritional consultant, and digestive health expert Brenda Watson offers an insightful perspective on this connection between weight gain and an underlying imbalance of bacteria in the gut, or what she calls the gut factor.  Drawing upon the latest scientific research, Watson illuminates the inner workings of the digestive system and provides instructions for achieving a healthy bacterial ecosystem that initiates weight loss by enabling the body to absorb fewer calories from food, reduce cravings, and store less fat.

The premise is simple: curtail sugar consumption (and its surprising sources) and eat more healthy fats, living foods, and protein to balance the bacteria in your digestive tract. The result? A skinny gut and optimal health.

THE SKINNY GUT DIET centers around an easy-to-follow lifestyle plan. A 14-day eating guide, dozens of delicious and easy to prepare recipes, and sage advice will help you achieve—and maintain—digestive balance and sustained weight loss. With inspiring real-life stories of individuals who transformed their health and their waistlines on the Skinny Gut Diet, Watson empowers you to become your own health advocate.

THE SKINNY GUT DIET is a lifestyle that will transform readers by giving them the tools to eat well for their gut so that they can lose those extra pounds, regain their health, and enjoy the vitality that newfound health brings.

{Just a note—Harmony Books is not sponsoring this post and will send the book directly to the winner.}

If you want to win a copy of The Skinny Gut Diet you must do the following (Continental United States only, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win “The Skinny Gut Diet” by @brendapoopscoop from @brooklynfitchik”

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “All of Me’ 50-Minute Ride 0

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“All of Me” 50-Minute Ride

John Legend

John Legend

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Are you ready for a new playlist? This time I wanted to return to a few songs that had previously been “retired” from my classes plus introduce a couple of tunes you may not have heard before. This is a 50-minute interval “ride” that you can use on your next run, bike ride or treadmill workout that will help keep you motivated to keep moving.

So let’s get started and as always—send me your favorite song suggestions!

  • All of Me (Tiësto’s Birthday Treatment): John Legend

This is one of those songs that I find myself singing along to every time it comes on the radio and grateful I work from home alone so no one can hear me as I couldn’t hold a note with a handle. Anyhoo, here is a pumped-up of version to get your workout started.

  • Leopard Print Pill Box Hat: Beck

I am a big Bob Dylan fan and this might be my favorite cover of a Dylan song to ever. (Okay—All Along the Watcher by Jimi Hendrix is a strong number two.)

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

I pray she did not write this for Justin Bieber… that little creep.

  • Breathing Underwater: Metric

Yesterday two of my boot camp dudes complained this song made “no sense” because “you can’t breathe underwater.” (Sigh—try to inject some culture in people and they get so literal!)

  • The World I Know: Collective Soul

This is one of those songs that always reminds me of the mid-90s (Sigh, again.)

  • Hypnotize: The Notorious B.I.G.

Be sure to use the “clean” version if you are playing this in a class!!

  • Let Forever Be: The Chemical Brothers

Noel Gallagher of Oasis co-wrote this tune and sings the vocals which is why it is so awesome. “How does it feel like—to wake up in the sun? How does it feel like—to shine on everyone?” Love it!

  • Paralyzer: Finger Eleven

This song gets the whole room to work harder and sing along.

  • Left Hand Free: alt-J

This is a brand new song from an indie based in Leeds, England and it made stop and take notice the first time I heard it.

  • Came Back Haunted: Nine Inch Nails

Trent Reznor came back from a long absence writing movie soundtracks to resurrect the Nine Inch Nails last year and this is my favorite song from that album. Perfect for interval sprints.

  • Sirens: The Pack A.D.

This band is from Vancouver and they can rock out.

  • Ring of Fire: Social Distortion

This is an example of a song that I used to play weekly and then just had to stop as it was starting to get on my nerves which is just NOT okay. Glad to be able to enjoy it again and hope you do as well! (The live version in the video is super-fun.)

  • Free: Phish

Oh stop your complaining Phish haters—this is a FANTASTIC song and you freaking well know it!

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

New “Ventura Highway” Playlist! 5

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Ventura Highway” 50-Minute Ride

Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This week’s playlist is a mixture of old and new styles of music for a 50-minute cardio workout that works well for indoor cycling, outdoor running and the elliptical. The pace is a mixture of easy resistance and a fast cadence to slower climbs requiring more muscle endurance.

Be sure to keep hydrated while you workout and as always—send me your favorite song suggestions!

  • Venture Highway (Deepsky’s Blizzard in L.A. Remix): America

I have used this song as a warm-up before and it always makes me feel happy. The mixture of dreamy orchestration mixed with the 70s hit makes me want to wear a poncho and stare at the stars at night.

  • Anything, Anything: Dramarama

OMG—I freaking love this song from the early 80s. The band broke up in 1994 but got back together after appearing in VH-1’s Bands Reunited.

  • Rumble and Sway: Jamie N Commons

This cute British boy is just 25 years old but rocks like an old blues artist.

  • Supersoaker: Kings of Leon

This song always makes me want to run faster and work harder. Perfect for sprints or running intervals.

  • Once in a Lifetime: Talking Heads

By far my favorite version of one of the best tunes of all freaking time!

  • Tongue Tied: Group Love

If you need something fun and poppy after a big mean climb.

  • I am One: Smashing Pumpkins

My inner 90s warrior chick luvs this band and this song in particular.

  • Blow Me One Last Kiss: P!nk

I think I have a problem when it comes to P!nk because if I do not hear her every single day—my world seems boring.

  • Tusk: Fleetwood Mac

Fleetwood Mac released a double album after their smash Rumors called Tusk and it contains exactly two decent songs on it. Can you guess the other one?

  • Bodysnatchers: Radiohead

This is a little gem from their In Rainbows CD you were allowed to pay whatever you wanted for it at the time.

  • Use Me (Live): Hootie & The Blowfish

Yes, I picked a Hootie song because this cover of Bill Withers’ hit kicks serious ass!

  • Love Runs Out: OneRepublic

Not sure why they do not have a space between “One” and “Republic” but I do like this tune.

  • That’s the Way: Led Zeppelin

The “Gods of Thunder” could write pretty ballads and this one always puts me in a good mood.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Good Feeling” 50-Minute Playlist 7

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Good Feeling” 50-Minute Ride

Flor Rida

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Its midsummer when I type this and I am in the mood to listen to good tunes that motivate me to work out indoors (the “summuh” heat in New York City is off the charts!) So today I collected music that will take you through a 50-minunte interval workout for either the treadmill or elliptical that will keep you in the mood to move.

Be sure to keep hydrated while you workout and as always—send me your favorite song suggestions!

  • Good Feeling: Flo Rida

I was not too familiar with Flo Rida before so let me know tell you what I have learned about him. He’s 6’3”, grew up in Carol City, Florida, attempted college twice before deciding to make his rap dreams come true and is a WWE fan. You’re welcome!

  • Valerie (featuring Amy Winehouse): Mark Ronson (featuring Amy Winehouse)

The 60s vibe is just so infectious and catchy. What a talent! RIP AW

  • Uprising: Muse

As much as I love listening to this band on my iPod everyone tells me you have to see Muse live in order to really appreciate them. So who is taking me to the show?

  • Walk: Foo Fighters

If you are wondering where the band name comes from—WW2 pilots would call UFO’s “Foo Fighters” because they did not know what else to call them and not look crazy. Got it?

Also—warning about playing this song in class as the volume goes CRAZY HIGH in the middle section. Still totally awesome but be aware of that.

  • Waterfalls: TLC

My favorite thing in the world is to tell my students to sing along to the chorus of Waterfalls because really what is more fun than that?

  • Please Don’t Leave Me: P!nk

This is one of the sweetest and saddest songs about thanking someone for loving you that I have ever heard.

  • Tell Me Baby: Red Hot Chili Peppers

Some people complain that they can’t tell one Red Hot Chili Peppers tunes from another one but I don’t care. If music is good—who cares if it is repetitive?

  • Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High: Arctic Monkeys

I think we have all had friends like this…or is it just me?

  • Feel Good Inc: Gorillaz

This song is fun to play when I want to incorporate sprints into the mix.

  • Pumped Up Kicks: Foster the People

If you listen to the lyrics of Pumped Up Kicks are pretty violent but the beat is so boppy and fun that no one ever seems to notice or care.

  • No More Drama: Mary J. Blige

I usually use this song for a slow climb and it’s another care where if you don’t feel the need to sing along you are officially a monster.

  • I Feel Love: Blue Man Group

True story—my friends Claudine & Keith would play this song over and over and over again for their eldest daughter when she was a baby because no other sound would soothe her.

  • Stay: Rhianna featuring Mikky Ekko

Patti Smith performs a lovely version of this song in her live shows.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Raging Fire” Ride 10

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Raging Fire” 50-Minute Ride

This is a "fancy" playlist y'all!

This is a “fancy” playlist y’all!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today’s playlist is a true interval ride with the pace & intensity changing every few minutes. It starts with a Philip Phillips song and ends with one of my favorite tunes in the whole wide world by Nelly Furtado. Hope it gets you motivated!

  • Raging Fire: Philip Phillips

I understand Phillip Phillips was on American Idol but I have never seen one episode of that show so to me he is just another singer who plays songs that make me say “hmmm—this might work for a warm-up tune.” And it certainly does work so there you go!

  • Are You Gonna Be My Girl: Jet

Do you remember the early iPod ads that used this song? Yeah—they were pretty cool.

  • I Gotta Feeling: The Black Eyed Peas

This one is just too damn catchy not to enjoy thoroughly.

  • Run-Around: Blues Traveler

I am old enough to admit I saw Blues Traveler live when this song came out and thought they would become huge stars. (Could still happen!)

  • Clocks: Coldplay

Some people really hate Coldplay and can’t hear one tune from them without making a face. I don’t care about those people.

  • Wake Up Call: Maroon 5

My favorite song by Maroon 5—it always puts me in a good mood!

  • Times Like These: Foo Fighters

If I added up the number of times I have paid to download the Foos….they just kick too much ass for their own good!

  • Fancy: Iggy Azalea

No idea at all why on earth this woman is so freaking popular right now but this is probably going to be the song of the summer because I hear it everywhere.

  • Firestarter: The Prodigy

I am also old enough to say I have seen The Prodigy live and they were amazing.

  • Natural One: Folk Implosion

The only reason the movie Kids meant anything to me was that they had this song on their soundtrack.

  • You Get What You Give: New Radicals

One of the best one-hit wonder tunes—ever.

  • I’m Like a Bird: Nelly Furtado

This is another case where I could have sworn she would become a huge star one day. Oh well—she will always have I’m Like a Bird.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “That’s Not My Name” 50-Minute Ride Ting Tings, Rhianna, Muse 6

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“That’s Not My Name” (50-minute Ride)

Iggy_Pop_-_A_Million_in_Prizes-_The_Anthology

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Today I want to start off with a song that every once in a while becomes an earworm in my brain. It’s just so damn catchy and fun that I can’t think of a reason to NOT play it.

Anyhoo—I hope you like this mix today of the old and new. This is a 50-minute interval ride of varying in tempo and mood from song to song. Hope you enjoy it!

  • That’s Not My Name: The Ting Tings

I dare you to NOT sing along to the chorus—it’s damn near impossible!

  • Pon de Replay: Rhianna

Rhianna is a new obsession for me. I have been downloading her music like crazy lately.

  • Fixed to Ruin: Sam Roberts

Sam Roberts has been very popular in Canada and looks like he might be taking off here as well. This is from his last album and is my favorite from him by far.

  • Runnin’ Down a Dream: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

The video for this song still kind of freaks me out but I love playing it super loud!

  • Zombie: The Cranberries

The Cranberries bring out my inner “Irish Badass” to the fore.

  • Gold Digger: Kanye West (with Jamie Foxx)

I played this on Sunday morning and one of my students said “What was that Ray Charles song you played today?” I told him it was actually Jamie Foxx singing and that there was a BIG difference between the “clean” and “explicit” version.

  • Supermassive Black Hole: Muse

This was the first hit from Muse that made me pay attention to them.

  • Glory and Gore: Lorde

Some people get annoyed by Lorde but I think she is really interesting.

  • It’s All Been Done: Barenaked Ladies

Funny Canadians signing catchy music brings out the “happy” in me.

  • The Passenger: Iggy Pop

“Singing La La La La La La La!” (Don’t mind me while I dance around my apartment right now…)

  • Pony: Ginuwine

Outside of the annoying spelling of his name—this song is so much fun to play in class and the metaphors to silly to not enjoy thoroughly.

  • Porcelain: Moby

My favorite DJ in the whole wide world (Dave Morey) would play this song on KFOG all of the time and said that it went “right to the pleasure center” of his brain. Not a bad way to end a ride—right?

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Crystal Vases” 50-min Ride P!nk, Gwen Stafani, Green Day, Nicki Minaj 8

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Crystal Vases” (50-minute Ride)

Nicki Minaj

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Is it cold enough for you? (West Coast peeps can just shut their collective pie holes, by the way. We get it—it’s nice there. Now stop bragging about it on Facebook!)

Anyhoo I finally got around to creating a new playlist and it received kudos over the weekend by my picky students. It’s a mixture of old & new tunes and I hope you all enjoy it. (Now enough of the Polar Vortex crap!)

  • Crystal Vases: The Last Royals

I love this song to use as a warm-up as it is fun and poppy sounding. However—try tot to focus on the lyrics as they are rather, um, depressing.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sara

My fondness for Canadians continues with this duo who write some really catchy pop-rock tunes.

  • Get the Party Started: P!nk

If you need a go-to that is guaranteed to get the whole room into a groove—try this one from P!nk. Cuz it rules!

  • World Turning: Fleetwood Mac

I love Lindsey Buckingham and this one is one of my all-time favorites from his early days in Fleetwood Mac.

  • Midnight City: M83

This is one of those slow, climb-type of songs that reminds me of 80s New Wave music.

  • Hollaback Girl: Gwen Stefani

Personally, I prefer the version where she curses…B A N A N A S! (Don’t worry, this video is clean.)

  • I Don’t Feel Ike Dancing: Scissor Sisters

If there is a happier sounding song in the world—I have yet to find it.

  • Brain Stew: Green Day

Give me some crunchy-sounding guitars just about any day of the week, thankyouverymuch.

  • Holding on for Life: Broken Bells

The first time I heard this song I was convinced it was Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon singing as the Bee Gees. Love it though I know nothing about this band.

  • Machinehead: Bush

Are they names after the President(s?) Does anyone know the answer to that?

  • Starships: Nicki Minaj

Once again—I prefer the dirty version of this tune. (NSFW! Really!)

  • Stars: Moby

For some reason Moby seems to write the perfect songs to use for “climbs.”

  • Changes: David Bowie

“Time may change me, but I can’t change time.”

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “New Year’s Day” Ride U2, Pompeii, Foos, The Sheepdogs & More 2

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“New Year’s Day” (50-minute Ride)

new-year-day-u2_1388112442

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It might seem by the title of this week’s playlist that I was celebrating the arrival of 2014 and therefore it is special for the New Year’s holiday. No! The first track (one of U2’s best IMHO) just happens to be an excellent song to start off a class. The beat is strong, consistent and helps everyone get into the mood to ride. Therefore–you can use this playlist any time of year for a kick ass workout.

  • New Year’s Day: U2

Great warm-up song that can be played any time of year. Really!

  • Welcome to Paradise: Green Day

I always like to think of this song as THE perfect second tune to play in a spin class as it ramps up the energy and gets everyone in a good mood.

  • Gettin’ Jiggy With It: Will Smith

Is there anyone more charming and likable than Will Smith?

  • But if You Close Your Eyes: Pompeii

This could be my new favorite band as they write some of the best songs for working out and getting motivated to move.

  • No More Drama: Mary J. Blige

I have talked about this tune before but it truly  is fantastic for hills and climbs.

  • Modern Love: David Bowie

I like to do strength intervals here with 15-seconds of hard work and 30-second rests in between.

  • Feeling Good: The Sheepdogs

This is another song I have talked about before but it is just too damn catchy for words!

  • Times Like These: Foo Fighters

One of my students recently told me “every time I hear the Foo Fighters– I feel like doing sprints.”  The Foos know how to get people excited!

  • White Rabbit: Jefferson Airplane

“Remember what the door mouse said …feed your head!”

  • The Hardest Button to Push: The White Stripes

Bump, bump, bump—I love the beat of this song.

  • Ghosts: Ladytron

My students climb to this with gradually increasing resistance with the last minute being the toughest part. I tell them to work at their top level until they hear the gong. If you listen to this song you will know what I mean.

  • The Impression I Get: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones

I am not sure what a “bosstone” is but I do love this 90s tune.

  • That’s the Way: Led Zeppelin

Throwing in a little Zep gives me the happies.

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…
