Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I have had a rather hellish week dealing with getting my health insurance to kick in and will not besmirch this post with the negativity it has brought into my life. That I will save for its own post tomorrow! In this week’s Vlog post I will discuss:

The New York City Health & Fitness Bloggers Brunch! Park Slope, Brooklyn// Saturday, January 25th

21-Day Sugar Detox:

Clowns to the left of me—jokers to the right and I am smack dab in the middle of this 21-Day Sugar Detox from the amazing Diane Sanfilippo, BS NC who is the author of not only the 21-Sugar Detox Cookbook but also my favorite cookbook of all time Practical Paleo. Wish I could say it was easy and I have been perfect but alas, my candy cravings (brought on by excessive stress) were so strong the other day I chowed down on a few tic tacs from my purse as if my life depended on them. Oh, and I may have had a glass of red wine or two (or three…)

However, I am sticking to it as closely as possible and am enjoying the results so far (skin clear, gut feels fine, no bloating—score!)

Here is a photo of the “Beef & Bacon Cottage Pie” I made last weekend that rocked my socks off. Deeeeee-liscious!

Outstanding!

Outstanding!

FitBloggin 2014:

Once again this year I am going to be a speaker at Fitboggin! Whoopee! If you are curious about the annual convention check out the details here http://fitbloggin.com/. Can’t wait to see all of my peeps in Savannah!

Diets in Review:

I was thrilled to be included in this article from Diets in Review talking about the sheer number of e-mail subscriptions that overwhelm my inbox each day. (For the record I subscribe to Fit Bottomed Girls, Fit Sugar, Cracked.com and Mental Floss.)

Cutest Video in the Whole Wide World (This Week)

If you are wondering what it would look like for the most adorable baby in the world to meet her uncle for the first time who just so happens to be her dad’s identical twin check it out here. You’re welcome!

My New Super-Secret Ambassadorship:

I was hoping to make the official announcement today but I have a new ambassadorship that I am DYING to talk to you all about but my lips have to be sealed a few more days. It should all be sorted out soon but here is a hint: it’s a company that is about cycling and women. More to come soon!

Weight Loss Rebels is an excellent fitness & healthy lifestyle web site led by the ah-mazing Meg Brown aka Fit Bitch who believes in “In a nutshell, that fitness and diet should not be a punishment, that it’s a psychological process, and that severe calorie restriction and excessive cardio have no place in anyone’s program.” Check out their site to get more details about Weight Loss rebels which now includes recipes by my Blogger buds Pineapple & Coconut and Cavegirl Confections. Do it!

Anyhoo—on to the giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway of “The 21-Day Sugar Detox” by Paleo rock star Diane Sanfilippo, BS, NC:

Those of you who follow me know that I am a big Paleo follower (no, it is not a DIET to me nor do I push it on anyone else.) This plan makes me feel better mentally & physically than I have most of my adult life and one of my favorite Paleo cookbooks is Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo, BS NC. This book is flagged and ready to use at all times in my kitchen with one of my favorite recipes being bacon-wrapped chicken thighs (nom nom!)

This past week she held a party in honor of her latest offering The 21-Day Sugar Detox which I had to miss because of work stuff (dammit!) but I was given the opportunity to give away two copies of her book (yay!) If you want to know more about the plan—check out this video from Diane:

Here are more details about “The 21-Day Sugar Detox”:

Are you ready to get your sugar and carb cravings under control? The 21-Day Sugar Detox is a clear-cut, effective, whole-foods-based nutrition action plan that will naturally re-set your body and your habits! More than 10,000 people have already succeeded with this easy-to-follow plan. Now it’s your turn! In just three weeks, you can free yourself from cravings, regain your energy, and feel great again.

This simple detox plan will help you break the stronghold of your worst go-to foods: the sweets, the refined grains you grab on the go, even the many seemingly “okay” foods that contain hidden sugars. These foods taste great, but they make you look and feel terrible. They rob you of your focus, spawn irrational mid-afternoon cravings, and make it so you can’t even get through the day without wanting–no, needing–to prop up your energy level with caffeine or, worse, even more sugar!

It’s time to break the cycle. The 21-Day Sugar Detox offers easy-to-follow meal plans and more than 75 recipes suitable for all levels of the program. Even better, it gives you three options so you can determine the level of detox you want. Whether you’ve never gone sugar or gluten free; you already follow a gluten- and grain-free diet; or actively follow a Paleo/Primal diet–there’s a level for you. Choose the level that’s best for you — and bust a lifetime of sugar and carb cravings in just three weeks.

The 21-Day Sugar Detox even includes special modifications for athletes (including endurance and CrossFit/HIIT-style training); pregnant/nursing moms; vegetarians/ vegans; and those with autoimmune conditions.

Start The 21-Day Sugar Detox today. Why wait?

Whew! Now on to this week’s Vlog post with more details:

Got that? Now here is some more information about this week’s giveaway:

Practical Paleo

by Diane Sanfillippo

With Practical Paleo, Diane Sanfilippo, Certified Nutrition Consultant and author of the very highly trafficked health blog, Balanced Bites, has created a comprehensive, user-friendly resource on the Paleo lifestyle that is truly for everyone.
Are you an athlete seeking to improve your performance? Do you suffer from health problems, such as an autoimmune condition, blood sugar regulation, or digestive issues? Practical Paleo can help you turn your life around. “This is not a diet,” says Diane.

“Practical Paleo is a way to change your lifestyle, lending to long-term health benefits. A diet is temporary: this book will show you how food works inside the body so that people can design a plan that works for their body.”
Diane’s developed her approach to a Paleo lifestyle based on her personal experiences. After suffering for years from chronic illness and digestive stress, among other deteriorating health-related challenges, she broke her diet down in minute detail and identified the culprit. “What I didn’t know about grains was hurting me”, says Diane.
Now a Certified Nutrition Consultant, Diane shares her discovery of how to become and stay healthy with others. “People are just beginning to realize that they are no longer destined to suffer from diseases, or even minor ailments—which are caused by modern food and depleting lifestyles.”
Divided into three parts, Practical Paleo is an invaluable guidebook, providing a in-depth look at everything Paleo:
• Part 1 teaches people the basics of why eating real, whole foods is optimal for health, including Diane’s signature 1-page guides to help put the information into action.

• Part 2 provides guidance for when a standard Paleo or grain-free approach may not be enough for specific health conditions, including autoimmune conditions, diabetes (1 and 2), neurological diseases, and cancer recovery to name a few, as well as for specific goals like fat loss or athletic performance.

• Part 3 includes over 120 easy recipes that provide the foundation for each of the 30-Day Therapeutic Meal Plans in the previous section.

One of the secrets to success with the Paleo lifestyle is personalization—what works for one person will most likely not work for the next. Diane’s 30-day plans and her delivery of the information relating to each of these plans allow each of us to truly help ourselves.

Practical Paleo can be found in stores nationwide, including at Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Costco and independent retailers, as well as online at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Practical Paleo is written by Diane Sanfilippo and published by Victory Belt Publishing, Inc. For more information about Diane and Practical Paleo, visit www.balancedbites.com or listen to her top-rated weekly podcast, The Balanced Bites Podcast, on iTunes.

If you are interested in getting a copy of Practical Paleo (Continental U.S. only please!) you need to do the following:
• Post a comment on my Blog below.

ISWFCover

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am very excited to present this week’s Vlog and my latest book giveaway as I was inspired by my Blogger bud Keri of Fit Views Blog who helped me get into the Paleo lifestyle in the first place. Keri recently picked her “Top 5 Paleo Cookbooks” which inspired me to do my own list of my favorite Paleo tomes that I have leaned on and been inspired by these last few months. But I am getting ahead of myself—let’s start with what is on the Vlog today…

Episode 21 of the Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Notes:
Polar Watches: A big THANK YOU to Polar watches for finally either fixing or just replacing my FT60 as the light never worked properly and now it is perfect. Yay to good customer service!

Being the lucky gal I am—they asked me to try out their eLearning workshop “Weight Loss Specialist” which I am about halfway through now. (Thank you NASM!) I plan to write more about it this week but in the meantime—check it out for yourself here: NASM “Weight Loss Specialist”

My “Top 7 Paleo Books” List plus My Latest Giveaway—It Starts with Food. I talk about my favorite Paleo books of the last year with many, it turns out, from the catalog of book publisher Victory Belt Victory Belt publishers. If you are either a newbie to Paleo looking for information or just someone looking for healthy, clean recipes to add to your meal plan—check out my suggestions in the Vlog below.

More Information on My “Top 7 Paleo Books”:
Robb Wolf Paleo Solutions: For me it all began with Robb’s book which I followed nonstop during my first month of eating completely clean (Whole 30) and I can honestly say I have not felt this good in years. Robb is a no nonsense kind of guy who also has a popular podcast that I quite enjoy—The Paleo Solution Podcast. In the clip I mention I followed his book’s meal plan 80% of the time but I want you to know I was strictly Paleo the Whole 30 Days! I just made some slight adjustments with ingredients as there are certain things I do not eat (salmon and anchovies for example.) Check out all of Robb’s work here at his official web site: Robb Wolf

• Diane Sanfillipo Practical Paleo: I just adore this book and the recipes here are to die for. She offers sound advice plus handy pull-out sheets to keep on your fridge and keep you on track. The Spaghetti Squash Bolognese recipe is divine! Be sure to check out her Blog Balanced Bites as well Balanced Bites

Dr. William Davis Wheat Belly: I can’t pretend to you all that I understand every single word in this book (the medical stuff goes over my head sometimes) but I was impressed with Wheat Belly. You can check out his Dr. Davis’ Blog here Wheat Belly Blog

Melissa Joulwann Well Fed: Oh my—the recipes here are so yummy and good here. This one I have on my Kindle but might have to buy a hard copy as well to keep in my kitchen library. Melissa’s Blog is called “The Clothes Make the Girl” Melissa Joulwann Blog

Tammy Credicott Paleo Indulgences: Over the holidays I went a little baking-happy and made quite a few yummy treats from this book. Tammy’s Blog is called “The Healthy Gluten-Free Life”  Tammy Crdicott Blog

Amelia Simons: Paleolithic Slow Cooker Soups & Stews: Wow! I just got this cookbook on my Kindle and as I am typing this out there is an Italian Soup cooking in my slow cooker and making me crazy. Seriously, I might just have to turn it on “High” so I can have it sooner! Amelia’s books are featured at:  Amelia Simons Amazon.com page

Dallas & Melissa Hartwig It Starts with Food: I had this book as a giveaway back in November and it was so damn popular I had to bring it back. This is one of those “Paleo Bibles” I think everyone interested in the lifestyle plan should read. Check out the details of the book below and how to win your own copy right below…

It Starts with Food
Discover the Whole30® and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways

by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig

Dallas and Melissa Hartwig, the popular health and nutrition bloggers famous for their tough love, have helped tens of thousands of people develop a healthier relationship with food through their underground Whole30® program. Now, their program has gone mainstream with the release of their first book, It Starts with Food: Discover the Whole30 and Change Your Life in Unexpected Ways (Victory Belt Publishing, $26.95).
It Starts with Food outlines a clear, balanced, sustainable plan to permanently change the way people eat, and transform their lives in profound and unexpected ways. “Our recommendations are based around the framework of a Paleo diet, but it’s not about history…it’s about health in today’s modern food landscape,” explains author, Certified Sports Nutritionist and Whole30 co-founder, Melissa Hartwig. “Our program achieves amazing results in just 30 days by giving readers a clear and simple plan focused on eating nutrient-dense, fast food, 100-calorie pack, eat-on-the-fly era, our book introduces a new perspective for how people approach each mealtime.”
Through their program, thousands of people have reported the astounding elimination of a variety of symptoms related to lifestyle-related conditions like diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and fatty liver disease; autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s and celiac disease, and psychological conditions like bipolar disorder, depression, and ADHD.
The Hartwigs detail not just the “how” of their Whole30 program in their new book, but also the all-important “why.” It Starts with Food reveals how specific foods may have a negative impact on how people look, feel, and live—in ways that many never associate with their diets. They address psychological attachments to unhealthy foods, and offer a strategy for banishing unhealthy cravings, habits, and patterns.’
The capstone of the program is their powerful nutritional reset—the Whole30—designed to support the immune system, heal the gut, and restore a healthy metabolism.
The end result is a balanced, sustainable way of eating that promotes a healthier relationship with food, optimal health, and radically improved quality of life.
Co-author Dallas Hartwig, a licensed physical therapist and certified sports nutritionist, agrees, saying, “Food can change your life, and It Starts with Food will show you how.”
About the Authors
Dallas Hartwig earned a BS in anatomy and physiology and an MS in physical therapy from Andrews University and has been a licensed physical therapist since 2001. He co-owned and operated a strength and conditioning facility with Melissa until founding Whole9 in 2009.
