Fit Bottomed Girls “Exercises I Ditched & What I Do Instead,” Terry Bikes “Urban Hoodie” Review, Looking for “BFF” Song Suggestions

My Top 5 Favorite Podcasts & “Book vs Movie” Podcast The Outsiders!

 Urban Hoodie

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all doing today? I am writing this down on Easter Sunday and I am feeling all kinds of wonderful & anxious at the same time (which is pretty natural for me.) The fact that spring has FINALLY, you know, sprung is making me smile but I am also worried about some friends and family which I am trying to funnel in a healthy way by alternately upping the intensity of my workouts and also trying really hard with incorporating meditation into a daily practice. Do any of you meditate? Any advice for an anxious newbie like me who has a hard getting her thoughts to NOT swirl when under pressure. Thanks in advance! Now let’s get to the latest news & notes, shall we?

Brooklyn Fit Chick News & Notes

Tips from the Trainer Pros on “Exercises I No Longer Do & What I Do Instead”  Tuesday mornings I teach a boot camp class which is designed more like an old-school calisthenics class rather than a whistle-blowing jerk yelling at people to do more push-ups kind of thing. One move in my arsenal was having my students bear crawl in one direction across the basketball court and then bear crawl back.

One day I was asked “what does the crab walk really DO anyway? It always makes me wrists & shoulders hurt.” I realized unlike a bear crawl which engages multiple muscle groups and mimics activities like leaving a cab or going up the steps at the subway—the crab walk while challenging to the core really has potential to cause more harm than good. It made me think what other moves other trainers I respect have “ditched” over the years which turned into an article I wrote for Fit Bottomed Girls.

So what exercises have YOU ditched over the years?

Terry Bikes Spring Gear: Last year I cold-called the women who run Terry Bikes and asked them if they ever needed a brand ambassador—well no further than with moi! I love their gear and am so happy to be able to share with you some of my most favorite items from their collection. Well today I want to talk about their Urban Hoodie which I have been wearing everywhere this past week as I was finally able to ditch my parka (off to the cleaners you filthy, annoying thing!). The hoodie fits snuggly in a fabric that whisks away moisture and keeps you warm. If you need something more than a jacket but less than, well—a parka the Terry Urban Hoodie is a delight. I took a picture of myself in it that you can see up top!  (Love!)

BFF Songs—I Need Your Suggestions! For Fit Bottomed Girls I am putting together a list of songs that help people remind them of their best friends. Just between up—I am coming up dry with ideas! So if you have any suggestions for BFF Workout tunes please feel free to list below. Thank you in advance!

My Fave Podcasts: For me, the best way to unwind around the house is to listen to podcasts. It’s like hearing stories from super-witty people in my living room & kitchen while I dust, clean and feed the cats. So today I wanted to offer some of my personal faves (no mention of Serial because it is in hiatus right now but if you have not heard of it—download them right now!)

  • What You Can When You Can #wycwyc Fabulous fit bloggers Carla Birnberg and Roni Noone break down healthy living in such a fun, real way. You will feel like you are learning how to live your best “fit life” from two cool friends. What You Can When You Can means you can fit health & fitness into your life in easy, small nuggets. Love it!
  • I Was There Too: Host Matt Gourley talks to extras and characters who have been in big movies scenes to get their unique take on cultural touchstones such as the “baby stroller scene” in The Untouchables to the passengers on the bus in Speed. This show is filled with so much great information and Gourley in particular is such a warm, friendly interviewer that I want to hang out with him and talk movies all day (Matt—I have a crazy cat and my name is Margo!)
  • How Did this Get Made? Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael take on one movie each episode that is so bad it is too much fun NOT to make fun of. (Is that a sentence? Not sure—I am tried and keeping it in!) Anyhoo this last one was about Lake Placid which is an AWFUL film but I loved listening to the panel rip it apart in an entertaining fashion. If you are afraid of snark—go for this one. (Though you will be surprised which movies they secretly adore
  • Radiolab If you are a fan of both science and excellent story telling you need to check out Radiolab. Honestly I am such a big fan of this podcast that if I ever met either host Jad Abumrad or Robert Krulwich I would probably pass out! Check them out!

What are your favorite podcasts? Let me know!!

And speaking of podcasts–

Book Vs Movie Podcast: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and I are talking about The Outsiders on our next episode—weeeeeeeeee!!  (You subscribe to us on iTunes with this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2.)  We also have a spiffy new website– http://www.bookversusmovie.com/ so come check us out sometime.  (Next episode full of Rob Lowe swooning will be available next weekend!)

That’s all I have for today—keep checking back for news, reviews and playlists aplenty! Thanks as always for dropping by!

BFC Brunch Invite

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I have had a rather hellish week dealing with getting my health insurance to kick in and will not besmirch this post with the negativity it has brought into my life. That I will save for its own post tomorrow! In this week’s Vlog post I will discuss:

The New York City Health & Fitness Bloggers Brunch! Park Slope, Brooklyn// Saturday, January 25th

Attention all health & wellness Bloggers because I am hosting a bunch at chez moi and I want to meet you all in person. The invite details are up top and I am getting together a fantastic goodie bag together so PLEASE RSVP me at brooklynfitchick at gmail dot come for all of the deets.

21-Day Sugar Detox:

Clowns to the left of me—jokers to the right and I am smack dab in the middle of this 21-Day Sugar Detox from the amazing Diane Sanfilippo, BS NC who is the author of not only the 21-Sugar Detox Cookbook but also my favorite cookbook of all time Practical Paleo. Wish I could say it was easy and I have been perfect but alas, my candy cravings (brought on by excessive stress) were so strong the other day I chowed down on a few tic tacs from my purse as if my life depended on them. Oh, and I may have had a glass of red wine or two (or three…)

However, I am sticking to it as closely as possible and am enjoying the results so far (skin clear, gut feels fine, no bloating—score!)

Here is a photo of the “Beef & Bacon Cottage Pie” I made last weekend that rocked my socks off. Deeeeee-liscious!

Outstanding!

Outstanding!

FitBloggin 2014:

Once again this year I am going to be a speaker at Fitboggin! Whoopee! If you are curious about the annual convention check out the details here http://fitbloggin.com/. Can’t wait to see all of my peeps in Savannah!

Diets in Review:

I was thrilled to be included in this article from Diets in Review talking about the sheer number of e-mail subscriptions that overwhelm my inbox each day. (For the record I subscribe to Fit Bottomed Girls, Fit Sugar, Cracked.com and Mental Floss.)

Cutest Video in the Whole Wide World (This Week)

If you are wondering what it would look like for the most adorable baby in the world to meet her uncle for the first time who just so happens to be her dad’s identical twin check it out here. You’re welcome!

My New Super-Secret Ambassadorship:

I was hoping to make the official announcement today but I have a new ambassadorship that I am DYING to talk to you all about but my lips have to be sealed a few more days. It should all be sorted out soon but here is a hint: it’s a company that is about cycling and women. More to come soon!

In the meantime—here is this week’s Vlog post:

Love y’all! Talk soon.

Happy New Year!!!

As I am setting up this post, it is New Year’s Eve and all I can think about is what happened in my life in 2012 (both good & bad) plus all of the wonderful things I am looking forward to doing, seeing and experiencing in 2013. Before I get to my list of what I am most thankful for this past year—I would like to start with my last Vlog post for 2012 which includes my newest giveaway (a Flip camera!), my current MILF Diet book giveaway plus my upcoming posts planned for the week.

My cats do not make an appearance this time but I am bit loopy on cold medicine so that is always fun to check out!

Got that? Okay here are the details of the Flip camera giveaway. All you need to do is post below and let me know what you would film for your Vlog posts and I will pick one winner at my discretion next Monday, January 7th at Noon eastern time.

The contest is open to residents of the Continental U.S. plus I am opening it up to the wild and wacky residents of the Great White North!! (Yes, that means YOU too can win my beautiful Canadian readers!)

Those who post to my Twitter feed will get extra consideration @BrooklynFitChik. Also—if you have not signed up for my You Tube channel (BrooklynFitChick1)—you might want to do that as well (hint, hint!)

Finally—I want to leave you today with all of the things I am grateful for from 2012:

  • Going “Paleo” and switching to a whole/non-packaged foods. I have a couple of friends who still can’t seem to understand why (even after all of my Blogging about the health benefits I have gained) I went on this supposedly “strict” program but in addition to losing almost 20 unwanted pounds since last December—I now have a new appreciation for food as a fuel source. This is no small thing people! (Yes—even a teacher can learn a new lesson from time to time!) Also, kudos and “merci” to Keri Olkjer at http://fitviews.blogspot.com/  for her extra encouragement and all of the information she offered without a bit of hesitation. Thanks Keri!
  • The amazing, wonderful, inspiring and unforgettable Fitbloggin conference in Baltimore this past year. Special thanks to everyone I met there including Roni Noone, Carla Birnberg, Steve Gray, Robby Lamb, Christine Assaf, Toni Church, Emmie Sandford, Jack Sh*t (unfortunately, I do not know his real last name!) Tara Martin, Meegan Dowe, Joise Maurer, Kelly Olexa, Brandi Koskie, Dr. Mary, Sheryl Yvette, Sue O’Lear, Susan Ito, Mark L. from The Biggest Loser and so many more than I can’t name in just one Blog posting.  I bought my tickets for this coming June in Portland and if I can afford it—you will see me there for sure!
  • My best friend in the world—Deborah Cota. Deb is a nonstop source of love and support for me and I just wanted to take the time to thank her for all that she does for me. If you want to find about Deb’s awesome books—check out her Blog The Kindred here: http://www.dantechronicles.com/default.html
  • My new friend Marrliee Wilson of Halifax, Nova Scotia who after only knowing me a few short weeks spent hours of her time trying to teach me how to record a podcast. (I will make it happen in 2013 Marrilee! Promise!) Thank you for being such a warm and wonderful source of advice and unconditional support. You are a true gem!
  • Jenn & Tish of Fit Bottomed Girls for (especially Jenn!) not only offering me the opportunity to be their New York City eyes and ears BUT ALSO for sending me virtual hugs and high fives when I need them. You are both exemplary.
  • Finally, I want to take the time to say how grateful I am to each and every one of you who take the time to read my Blog and watch my Vlog posts (especially you Missy Barnum, Toni Church and Jennifer Mitchell of the Fitness Bloggers group on Facebook who always give me their time and incredibly useful feedback. You are the best!) It means the world to me to know that there are people out there who are joining me on this journey to get healthy and feel good for the rest of my life. Let’s do this together gang!!

Well—that is it for today. Be sure to come back in 2013 for all of the health, fitness, food and pop culture you can handle in one blog. Big hugs and kisses to all of you. (“Mwah!”)
