Health CoverStar for July/August

Maria Menounos

All I know about Maria Menounos comes from listening to her interviews with Howard Stern where the entertainment reporter says “nooooo-uh!” and “yes-uh!” constantly. Plus, she also has a fun/goofy laugh.  After reading this interview I now know that Maria has a reality show on Oxygen called Chasing Maria Manounos and just published her own diet book The EveryGirl’s Guide to Diet & Fitness.

In college Maria had at one point ate “competitively” to keep up with her guy friends and wound up gaining 40 pounds by her junior year. Then she noticed a sign for a Miss Massachusetts pageant with a $1000 entrance fee thinking spending that much money would give her to motivation to lose weight and fix her bad eating habits. She has kept the weight off 16 years later!

You can get a look-see at some of Maria’s favorite exercises here:

So what else is inside the July/August Health?

“Good Morning Yoga”

One of my first events I attended as a Fit Bottomed Girl featured yoga star Kristin McGee and I was gaga for her right away. So sweet and down to earth! Here is her favorite morning yoga warm-up.

“Tracy Tones You”

I love how Tracy Anderson mixes it up on the mat and create unique movements to work smaller muscles. Though some of these had me scratching my head but will try them out and see how they work.

Whether your muscles are sore, strained or cramping—Health shows how to take care of them in this feature.

What Do We Learn This Month in Oxygen?

“A Petite Powerhouse”

Our cover star is Kathleen Tesori who is not only sponsored by Bodybuilding.com but is also Manger of Supply Chain management with the U. S. Airforce—wow! The 5’ 2” Tesori resides in Salt Lake City and considers working for her country to be a privilege.

Even though she has busy days with the Department of Defense she always makes the point to work out even if for only 20 minutes. The former junk food junkie used to live on corndogs and Mountain Dew (ah—college!) She now eats a very clean diet and totes around her meals in a cooler to and from work.

Kathleen is featured in the “20-Minute Fat-Burning Workout” inside the issue as well.

“Your Ultimate Upper Body”

By doing two opposing exercises at the same time you can see powerful effects (such as combining lunges with bicep curls.) Check out some of these moves from trainer Cindy Whitmarsh that will help increase your metabolic burn.

Your Upper Body Workout Oxygen 001

“Portable Pilates”

Oxygen has expert Pilates trainer Juliet Kaska of JK Zen Fitness show how we can all do this workout from home. (Note to self—get this equipment, stat!)

“Fine-Tune Your Butt”

With a headline like that—guess what muscles you will be working with this feature? These exercises were developed by Simone De La Rue whom I completely adore. (Hi Simone!)

“Pink Power!”

I am not much of a runner (if you ever see me running—ask what the hell is wrong!) Nor am I much of a “pink” girl but this page of pink running gear gives me the happies. (Maybe because Spring has sprung!)

And now the rest of this issue of Oxygen:

  • “Strong Body, Strong Mind” Exercising your body can also help your mind from “warding off dementia to relieving anxiety and depression.”
  • “Eat Smarter to Feel Great” If you have problems with inflammation (over here!) changing your diet can help “minimize it’s effects.”

Overall Grade:

A- Lots of good workouts here but some of the other features were less than interesting to me.

What Did We Learn This Month?

Shape: March 2013

Shape Cover Star for March:
Jennifer Love Hewitt and her insane curves are featured on the cover the March issue. In her interview Jennifer addresses the rotten things the media has said about her body over the years (which makes me insane—THIS woman was considered fat? Sheesh!)

Jennifer admits the hyper-focus on her weight made her self-conscious for a while but success is the best revenge of all as they say and she is flying high now with her Lifetime show The Client List.

If you are curious how she stays in shape—check out her routine based on her “Buti” classes from trainer Bizzie Gold (you read that correctly!) Check out her site here: (Link for Bizzie!)

So what else is inside the March Shape?

“Workout of the Month”
So excited about these workout pages from the March issue! The moves here are from trainer Simone De LaRue whom I have written about for Fit Bottomed Girls a few months ago: (Fit Bottomed Girls link.)

Hello Hot Body 001

“Show Stopping Ads”
Shape’s Janet Lee offers great advice on how to get your core in tip top condition from what to eat, to the best workouts to try and finally—the steps to getting more zzz’s in your life.
Abs 001

“Yoga, Our Way”
If you are looking to add more yoga to your life but were not sure which practice was best for you—well check out page 72 to find out!

Yoga 001

“Triple Play”
Jessica Matthews developed this routine based on using three different cardio machines at the gym that will help you burn more calories in less time.

Triple Play 001

“Wacky, But it Works!”
Feel funny about using walking poles while walking outdoors or trying your hand at dribbling a basketball? Well don’t feel silly because these activities will help make your workout even more complete.

Wacky but works 001

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Shape:
• “Shop Once, Eat All Week” Shape shows us what you can make with just 20 ingredients on your shopping list. Really yummy recipes from author Melissa Lanz: The Fresh 20: (Amazon.com link.)
“Love Your Now Body” TLC’s Stacy London (What Not to Wear) is new to the Shape fashion team and I for one could not be more excited! And she is a fellow Brooklynite which makes her extra cool IMHO.
“Coolest Clubs in America” Did your fancy gym make the list?
“Head Off Headaches” I get some real pounders between my eyes sometime so this article will be most helpful.
“Medicine Cabinet: A Checkup” Most helpful guide for what to keep and what to toss from my bathroom cabinets. (Yikes—it was scary in there!)

Follow Shape magazine online at: www.Shape.com

Overall Grade:
A! Once again they bring a really useful issue. Good job Shape!
