Book Vs Movie: Stephen King “You Know They Have a Hell of a Band” (Replay)

Book Vs. Movie Podcast (Replay)

“The Stephen King Storytime Bonus Ep

Special Guest Juliette Miranda

Just a couple of lady podcasters talking about their favorite Stephen King stories

The Breathing Method” & “You Know, They Got a Hell of a Band

The Stephen King bonus eps do so well for us at Book Vs Movie that we decided to have fun with the format and talk about favorite King short stories/novels/screenplays and works that have necessarily been turned into a movie (or a really cheesy one–stay tuned for those coming up!)

In this ep, Margo D. talks with Juliette Miranda of the amazing Unwriteable Rant podcast and we have a grand old time imbibing our refreshments (Margo enjoys a nice wine out of a can!) while each discussing one our favorite King short stories.

Margo D. starts with the novella The Breathing Method which appeared in the book Different Seasons in 1982. It’s the story that takes place in 1935 and told by Dr. Emlyn McCarron who meets a young pregnant woman named Sandra Stansfield. She is single and determined to have her baby in the most natural way possible and learns the then-new Lamaze method breathing from Dr. McCarron who soon falls a bit in love with her.

The ending of this book scared Margo D. so much that she waited 20 years to attempt it again. It has not been adapted as a film yet but is technically in development with director Scott  Derrickson (Doctor Strange and The Day the Earth Stood Still) attached.

Juliette Miranda then talks about one of her favorite king short stories “You Know, The Have a Hell of a Band” which originally appeared in the 1992 collection of rock and roll based stories–Shock Rock which was edited by Jeff Gelb.

In this story, a bickering couple (King’s specialty!) are hopelessly lost while driving on vacation. They eventually wind up in a town which just happens to be haunted by the ghosts of famous dead musicians such as Janis Joplin, Elvis Presley, and Buddy Holly just to name a few.

Because it is a Stephen King story–things get weird and creepy in no time. There was an adaptation of this story which appeared in the anthology series Nightmares & Dreamscapes and it is–kind of stinky. But it’s also fun and we have a great time discussing what we like about the Shock Rock book as well.

Margo D. also talks about her favorite story Shock RockBob Dylan, Troy Johnson and the Speed Queen by F. Paul Wilson.

I hope you enjoy this different take on our usual Stephen King bonus eps.

Book Vs Movie: Stephen King’s “Carrie” (1976) Replay Ep

Book Vs Movie (Replay)

Carrie”

The Margos Take On the Stephen King Classic in this Redo Ep

It’s October and the Margos are SO excited to revisit a classic Stephen King tale–Carrie which we originally covered in 2014 (using the old, old way we recorded back in the early days.)  This is not only King’s first movie adaptation but it is also based on his first published novel. There are so many changes between book & movie that we wanted to give it a modern treatment (meaning better sound and lots of clips!)

Just how different is the original novel versus the Brian DePalma masterpiece of horror?  Whoo boy—there were some major changes made (and for very good reason in many instances.)

So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

Once again, we are SO lucky to have Penguin Books sponsor this episode! The Margos are thrilled to be asked to talk about author Ransom Riggs‘ newest “Miss Peregrine’s story”–A Map of Days which is on sale right now.

This is the fourth novel in the series and lead character Jacob Portman’s life in the United States is the setting for this newest adventure. Get your copy today! (It makes for a great gift, by the way.)

In this ep the Margos discuss :

Book vs Movie “It: Chapter 2” (Review with spoilers!)

Book Vs. Movie

Stephen King Bonus Ep

With Deana Marie (Twisted Philly)

IT: Chapter 2

It’s time for another Stephen King Bonus ep and Margo D. is joined by Deana Marie of the Twisted Philly podcast to talk about the Andy Muschietti film that is a follow-up to the mass success of the 2017 first chapter which is one of the most successful horror films of all time.

Chapter 2 follows the adult members of “The Losers Club” as they return to Derry, Maine to take on Pennywise the Clown one more time. How much of the original 1986 IT novel is featured in the movie? Why is it almost three hours long? Do we like the adult casting? All of this is discussed and more.

Two years ago, Margo & Deana disagreed on how they felt about the first chapter. What do they think about the sequel? You will have to listen below to find out.

Discussed in this episode:

    • The original story and how they have been adapted
    • What surprised us in this adaptation (and not in a great way!)

Book Vs Movie “The Shawshank Redemption”

Book Vs Movie

The Shawshank Redemption”

The Margos finally take on this classic Stephen King/Frank Darabont movie (you’re welcome!)

If there is one thing we can say about Book Vs Movie fans–they LOVE the Stephen King eps and cannot get enough of them. In particular, we have been getting requests for The Shawshank Redemption since we launched the show and finally had the time to get it together.

The story of the bromance between Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Red Redding (Morgan Freeman) is considered one of the best movies of all time and has continually been on syndicated TV since its debut on the TNT network in June 1997.  (Seriously, this movie is always playing on some channel somewhere!)

Unjustly convicted for the murder of his wife and her lover Andy spends decades of his life fighting to clear his name while learning to adapt to life as a prisoner. It’s a story about friendship, survival, revenge, deception, agony, and redemption.

Originally published as a novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption in 1982’s Different Seasons the differences between the original story and the movie are plentiful. So which did the Margos like better? Book or Movie? Check out the link below to find out!

This episode is sponsored by Penguin Random House! Song of the Dead is Sarah Glenn Marshall’s followup to her YA hit Reign of the Fallen and will be available on Tuesday, January 29th on Kindle, hardback and on Audible. The story is the continuation of our hero Odessa who is determined to leave the borders of Karthia to mend her broken heart.

She is joined on her journey with Meredy and they find a land where the Dead rule at night and dragons roam the streets. Just as they are being enchanted at the new world (and each other) growing political issues bring them back to Odessa where specters from their past haunt their tenuous relationship.

As a member of the LGBT community, author Marshall is especially proud of creating an inclusive fantasy world in which race, gender, and sexuality are non-issues.

In this ep the Margos discuss :

  • The 1982 novella from Different Seasons and how it differs from the movie
  • How director Frank Darabont originally paid one dollar (!) to adapt King’s short story The Woman in the Room in 1983 and how after he wrote the screenplay for Nightmare On Elm Street 3–it gave him the confidence to take on this story.
  • The incredible cast including Robbins, Freeman, Bob Gunton (Warden Norton,) William Sadler (Heywood,) Clancy Brown (Captain Hadley) Gil Bellows (Tommy,) and James Whitmore as Brooks Hatlen.
  • The history behind the casting and setting of the movie
  • A plethora of trivia and behind-the-scenes gossip about the much-lauded film
  • Why King never cashed his $1000 check for the rights to the film!

Clips Featured:

  • The Shawshank Redemption  trailer
  • Andy meets Red for the first time
  • The “rooftop scene” between Andy and Captain Hadley
  • Brooks finds out he is leaving Shawshank
  • The “opera scene”
  • Outro Music:  Duettino–Sull’aria “Le Nozze di Figaro” By Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin
