Hey Gang!

The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind of activity between work, life and you know—trying to fit in a fun activity or two. My summer has been a little too busy for my taste but I am hoping things will settle down soon and I can better about staying in touch. So let me tell you about a few things happening in my world and then I want to hear what is going on with you!

Without further ado—let’s get to this week’s main post!

Yoga in Times Square (For Reals!): June 21, 2015 was declared the world’s first “International Day of Yoga” with fabulous Zen-like events taking place around the globe including the annual Summer Solstice in Times Square which I covered a few years ago for Fit Bottomed Girls. It was so magical that when I had the chance to once again go into the middle of NYC and do some yoga on a hot summer afternoon—I jumped at it.

It is indescribable the feeling of trying out the mountain pose or a backward bend and being in the middle of one of the most celebrated places in the world. Somehow in the heat, humidity, car noises and usual tourists rambling about we were able to find a peaceful place in our minds. I wish I had taken more photos but I was just so caught up in the moment that I only have these to share with you. Next time you will all just have to out here with me to see it for yourself!

Book Vs Movie Podcast News: Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog co-host the “Book Vs. Movie” podcast (that you can subscribe to via iTunes at this link) had planned to record our first “80s” era episode with the classic Less Than Zero when Amazon Prime decided to NOT ship her DVD in time (grrr.) Have no fear—we will record that podcast very soon because we are both DYING to talk about Andrew McCarthy and James Spader but it gave us an opportunity to turn to the vaults.

Soooo we decided to go back to our archives and release a past episode where we discussed The Help. (Many people have asked for this one!)

Fit Bottomed Girls Playlist: I am lucky enough to write for Fit Bottomed Girls and this past week they had their annual “BFF” (Best Friend Forever) celebration where they talked about how amazing (and much needed) a BFF is on our lives ( I certainly love mine!) So I put together the BFF Workout Playlist and wanted to ask you—what song reminds you of your BFF? What would you add to my list?

How are you all doing today? It’s a brand new week and though I feel a wee bit short of my personal fitness goals (I may have slacked on my foam rolling a bit…) but this warmer & sunny weather has put an extra spring in my step. Doesn’t seeing the sun out nice and bright in the sky improve your outlook? It sure does mine and with that I am resolving to get back to foam rolling and stretching every night not only it makes me feel better but it also helps me perform better as a teacher.

So now that I am saying it OUT LOUD—it will have to get done! If it kills me I am going to increase my flexibility and strength. You are all my witnesses! Now that THAT is out of the way—let’s go through my weekly news & notes. (And for those 3 of you miss my Vlog—next week I promise to deliver with a cool, new giveaway. Pinky swear!)

Tips from the Pros on “Kettlebells for Beginners”

If there is one strength-building piece of equipment that really helps to build muscle while also providing an excellent cardio workout it’s the kettlebell. For Fit Bottomed Girls I wrote “Tips for Your First Kettlebell Class” so I would know how to use mine better when working out on my own.

Body Shaming of P!nk:

I don’t know if you heard of this story but one of my favorite singers, P!nk, attended an event this past weekend looking totally beautiful. Well because we live in an internet age there has to be a body-shaming wave headed by mean-spirited trolls tried to make her life miserable. Well if you know anything about P!nk you know that she is non-nonsense and expertly handled all of the mean tweets thrown her way. Do you think we will EVER live in a world without trolls?

How I Learned to Love Eating:

I really loved this article from Tapgenes.com talking about recovery from eating disorders. Tapgenes.com interviewed two amazing women who talk about the toll it took on their bodies and how they have successfully deal with their individual disorders. This is a definite must-read!

How are you all doing today? I am writing this down on Easter Sunday and I am feeling all kinds of wonderful & anxious at the same time (which is pretty natural for me.) The fact that spring has FINALLY, you know, sprung is making me smile but I am also worried about some friends and family which I am trying to funnel in a healthy way by alternately upping the intensity of my workouts and also trying really hard with incorporating meditation into a daily practice. Do any of you meditate? Any advice for an anxious newbie like me who has a hard getting her thoughts to NOT swirl when under pressure. Thanks in advance! Tips from the Trainer Pros on “Exercises I No Longer Do & What I Do Instead”  Tuesday mornings I teach a boot camp class which is designed more like an old-school calisthenics class rather than a whistle-blowing jerk yelling at people to do more push-ups kind of thing. One move in my arsenal was having my students bear crawl in one direction across the basketball court and then bear crawl back.

One day I was asked “what does the crab walk really DO anyway? It always makes me wrists & shoulders hurt.” I realized unlike a bear crawl which engages multiple muscle groups and mimics activities like leaving a cab or going up the steps at the subway—the crab walk while challenging to the core really has potential to cause more harm than good. It made me think what other moves other trainers I respect have “ditched” over the years which turned into an article I wrote for Fit Bottomed Girls.

So what exercises have YOU ditched over the years?

Terry Bikes Spring Gear: Last year I cold-called the women who run Terry Bikes and asked them if they ever needed a brand ambassador—well no further than with moi! I love their gear and am so happy to be able to share with you some of my most favorite items from their collection. Well today I want to talk about their Urban Hoodie which I have been wearing everywhere this past week as I was finally able to ditch my parka (off to the cleaners you filthy, annoying thing!). The hoodie fits snuggly in a fabric that whisks away moisture and keeps you warm. If you need something more than a jacket but less than, well—a parka the Terry Urban Hoodie is a delight. I took a picture of myself in it that you can see up top!  (Love!)

BFF Songs—I Need Your Suggestions! For Fit Bottomed Girls I am putting together a list of songs that help people remind them of their best friends. Just between up—I am coming up dry with ideas! My Fave Podcasts: For me, the best way to unwind around the house is to listen to podcasts. It’s like hearing stories from super-witty people in my living room & kitchen while I dust, clean and feed the cats. So today I wanted to offer some of my personal faves (no mention of Serial because it is in hiatus right now but if you have not heard of it—download them right now!)

  • What You Can When You Can #wycwyc Fabulous fit bloggers Carla Birnberg and Roni Noone break down healthy living in such a fun, real way. You will feel like you are learning how to live your best “fit life” from two cool friends. What You Can When You Can means you can fit health & fitness into your life in easy, small nuggets. Love it!
  • I Was There Too: Host Matt Gourley talks to extras and characters who have been in big movies scenes to get their unique take on cultural touchstones such as the “baby stroller scene” in The Untouchables to the passengers on the bus in Speed. This show is filled with so much great information and Gourley in particular is such a warm, friendly interviewer that I want to hang out with him and talk movies all day (Matt—I have a crazy cat and my name is Margo!)
  • How Did this Get Made? Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael take on one movie each episode that is so bad it is too much fun NOT to make fun of. (Is that a sentence? Not sure—I am tried and keeping it in!) Anyhoo this last one was about Lake Placid which is an AWFUL film but I loved listening to the panel rip it apart in an entertaining fashion. If you are afraid of snark—go for this one. (Though you will be surprised which movies they secretly adore
  • Radiolab If you are a fan of both science and excellent story telling you need to check out Radiolab. Honestly I am such a big fan of this podcast that if I ever met either host Jad Abumrad or Robert Krulwich I would probably pass out! Check them out!

How are you all doing today? Today (as I am writing this) it is my birthday and I feeling happy about all things going on in my life right now. (Well, except for the noisy new neighbors who can’t seem to move into a building without shaking every single apartment floor along the way! Sheesh!)

Book Vs Movie Podcast: This week my good friend Margo Porras of Shes Nacho Mama’s Blog and me posted one of our favorite episodes of “Book Vs. Movie” (which you can subscribe to on iTunes with this link https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2.) wherein talked about Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The original novella by Truman Capote took place in 1943 NYC and the film directed by Blake Edwards (and starring the incandescent Audrey Hepburn) takes place in the swinging early 60s which is just one of many differences between book and film.

Margo and I originally recorded this back in September but had several technical issues at the time that are now thankfully gone (I am something of a wiz at editing it turns out!)  Hope you like the episode. Tips for Your First Aerial Class: Years of cycling have given me terrible hip and hamstring issues that would certainly be alleviated with aerial yoga of some sort. So I pitched this idea to Fit Bottomed Girls Tips for Your First Aerial Class to help me get inspired to try it out. (Have you ever done aerial workouts? Was it fun? Helpful?)

How to be Happier at The Gym: I know that for some people getting to the gym requires motivation and fighting the “I don’t wanna go today” blues. In this feature I give my advice on how to get happier about the gym. What are your favorite tips?

Something Rotten is Going to take Broadway by Storm: Okay—if you are a fan of big, funny, bawdy musicals (Think The Mormon Musical or The Producers) then you must check out Something Rotten which features two actors from the TV show Smash (which I LOVED) Brian D’arcy James and  Christian Borle. The play is set England when Shakespeare is a huge theater star (a very sexy Borle) and a struggling playwright (a hilariously tense D’Arcy James) yearns to create the first ever musical on stage.

I went  to see a preview show for my birthday and had a total blast. One of the best times I have had as an audience member for sure–the crowd ate it up!

Let’s say you know your fair share of Broadway musicals and love theater humor—this will show will fit the bill. It’s in previews right now but I suspect it will be a big hit. (Dare I say a “smash?” Did you see what I did there?”) Take my word—this show will up for a slew of Tony Awards!

I am filled with good news today and want to shout it out from the rooftops but alas, I must keep it under wraps for another week or so. (Ooh—how can I keep this to myself? I am dying to talk about it!) Hang on impatient friends and family—there is a new project I am working on with my fellow Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcastand we are both crossing our fingers and sending good Juju out to the world that it will be something that lots of folks will enjoy. Not just our usual yoga, Zumba, spinning, workout and “playout” crew but also those who love entertainment.

I have already said too much! Wait right here until next my next Vlog post (my 90th!) next week to get all the details. (Dying to say something but must restrain myself…)

In the meantime I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine—Jan from Cranky Fitness. Jan used to be an attorney and family therapist but now makes her bones as a life & wellness coach (as well as an ACE-certified wellness coach) and Blogger whose motto is “Healthy Living is a Pain in the Ass!” (What is not to love about this woman?) Cranky Fitness is an excellent resource on all kinds of health, fitness & nutrition topics including a few of my favorites here:

And now for my “Super Brooklyn Postcard Extravaganza!”

Recently I participated with a group of fellow Bloggers to send postcards to one another as encouragement and to say “hello” to people we don’t get to see in person very often. This idea had me thinking about all of the times when my students and social media followers take the time out of their busy days to tell me that I make them smile. I get so bogged down with all of my projects and responsibilities that it frankly makes me a “cranky” mess at times. (I know—shocking news, right?)

On Sundays I teach three back to back classes (spin/spin/core) and I have to admit there are times when I say to myself “Screw it—it’s Sunday and I am working again? Grrr!” (Especially on a beautiful morning when I would rather be out on my bike—double grr!)

However every week I still keep going and get such a happy buzz from helping folks end their weekend on a healthy note.

Today one of my favorites said to me that she loves my 10:30 am core class so much she schedules the weekend around it. “My kids know not to make plans with me until after 11:30 when you are done.”

This made me so happy that I decided to send my own encouragement out to those in the world who could use it. Are you in the need of a little postcard cheer? The Super-Duper 2014 Fitbloggin’ Recap!!!

This will make much more sense later on in the post.

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am finally ready to put some of my thoughts down about the latest Fitbloggin’ convention (my fourth!) that took place in Savannah this year and offer myself advice for the next trip I take to the south. The days went by in a whirlwind and it was a great mix learning new skills and catching up with old friends.

I had a blast but let me make this absolutely clear—I would change some things if there were a chance for a “Savannah Fitbloggin’ Do-Over.”

  • Put “more” not less into the carry-on suitcase. It was so damn hot and humid in Savannah I mistakenly thought I could bring a couple of changes of wardrobe and be fine.  Soon enough, However, I was sweating my butt off and quickly ran out of options to wear to the multiple events held at the Hyatt. (Note to self—maxi dresses are a gift of the modern age.) If I had to do over there would be more options and less worry about saving space in the suitcase for souvenirs.
  • Bring a flatiron! It was over 90 degrees every day and high humidity so of course my hair had a freak-out. Managed to forget to bring a brush as well. (Also, never going to THAT salon on Fifth in Park Slope again for selling me a crap Keratin treatment!)
  • Pack the nice makeup: I brought along the usual “on vacation” drug-store mascara, eyeliner, foundation, etc. and every speck of it melted off my face in no time. Next time I haul my cookies down to Georgia I will remember to being the lotions and potions that work in any weather. (Think Sephora and not CVS beauty supply!)
  • Order some damn fried chicken! I somehow missed the opportunity to eat real southern fried chicken with gravy and biscuits. (Bad Margo! Bad! Bad!)

But other than that my time in Savannah was magical and I including a few of the highlights for y’all right here. (You’re welcome!)

Day 1:

I was happily surprised to find two of my Blogger friends on the same flight as me. Brooklyn Active Mama and Kimberly of Manifest Yourself greeted me at the Jet Blue gate which immediately got me in the mood for fun times and good vibes. Look how gorgeous we are!

I landed in Savannah and checked on Facebook to find out that Thea of It’s Me Vs. Me was looking for a lunchtime pal. I asked if she would be up for a good old-fashioned southern meal at The Olde Pink House and we were off to the races.

Many friends and acquaintances recommended I eat at “The Pink House” and color me grateful for that tip. This will forever be known as the spot where I first tried fried green tomatoes and watermelon gazpacho. Talk about NOM NOM good? Check out the photos to get an idea of how damn delicious it was:

After our meal we were given the opportunity to explore the rest of Pink House (which was originally built as a private residence in 1789) and were completely blown away with both the décor and the history.

After our yummy lunch Thea and I headed over to the Gryphon Tea Room and were both gobsmacked at how lovely & charming the city is. So much so that I grabbed my iPad to take this video (apologies for not filming horizontally) to try and capture its essence—here it is!

 

Then we met up with the group for the prearranged tea time set up by “Losing Weight and Having Fun” Blogger Sarah:

The Gryphon Tea Room was insanely beautiful and I was happy to join in the fun (sipping ice coffee because hot tea makes me gag.)

Whilst there I met up with my gorgeous roommate Christine of Dubya Wife (she brought a fancy hat and everything!)

There were also pastries and yummy treats on display– however one of my lunch pals (who is of the British persuasion) described everything from the tea to the food as “upper crap.”  Can’t argue or agree with their assessment but to each their own, oui?

That day/night I stayed up until 2 am catching up with old friends and meeting new ones. It was fabulous and featured Legos! Yup–I got pretty drunk and stayed up WAY past my usual bed time. (Photographic evidence at the top.)

Day 2:

The next day I took the “Anti-Computer Body Workout” from celebrity trainer Ashley Borden who was kind enough to speak with me after class for my myriad of training questions. (Thank you Ashley!)

One of the best things about the trip was meeting up with fellow EleVen by Venus ambassadors such as Brooke Not on a Diet (love this girl!)

Day 3:

I was terribly nervous that NO ONE would show up for my small group discussion How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships and Sponsorships that took place Saturday morning at the same damn time as 80s Zumba!! (Who scheduled this? Why do you hate me?)

However I was pleased as punch to see I had a full room waiting for my advice. It made feel great and very useful.

During my talk I used Terry Bicycles as an example of a brand I help with their social media. I enticed my group to show up with the promise that one of them would win this package if they stayed the whole time:

Lo and behold “Crabby” at Cranky Fitness was my winner for correctly answering this trivia question: “Name two Brooklyn singing legends who went to the same high school together in the 1960s” (Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond, of course!)

She plans to enjoy her new seat rising around Provincetown soon.

Afterwards I was lucky enough to attend Katy Widrick’s How to Make a Media Kit discussion which was so inspiring. Thank you Katy! She even has an example of a press kit created in a Word document! Really!

And just like that I had to run off to the airport and catch my flight back home. It was a fun time and I am pleased to announce here that Fitbloggin 15 will take place this time next year in Denver—whoo hoo!!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It is less than two weeks away to the annual Fitbloggin convention and I can hardly contain myself—weeee!  I have been in full beauty preparation mode in anticipation for the southern heat & humidity. Hair has been colored and a full keratin treatment was processed this past week. My eyebrows and upper lip are hair-free and I am stocking up on oil-free moisturizers, glopping on sunscreen and am ready to pretend to be scared when we take the Savannah ghost house tour. Bring it on!

I hope to meet as many of you as possible though I want to warn you—I have to leave a bit early (Saturday afternoon) so if you see me—just run over and give me a hug without a second thought.

This week my Blog/Vlog post is super short & sweet in anticipation of Fitbloggin. I will have my usual playlist, reviews and magazine recaps coming up this week as well. So let’s get this week started y’all!

  • Fitbloggin: The annual Fitbloggin takes place this year in Savannah, Georgia from June 26-29th and this year I am leading a discussion—How to Pitch Brands for Ambassadorships & Sponsorships on Saturday, June 28th from 9:30-10:30 am. I know this might be either a bit too early or a conflicting time with another panel—but if you can make it, I would LOVE to see you there. Pencil it in now!

 

  • EleVen by Venus: One of the newer brands I am now an ambassador for is EleVen by Venus which is the creation of tennis superstar Venus Williams. I will talk about what it takes to work for a high-profile label and how you can serve the same capacity for your favorite brand. (Plus, I will be wearing some of their fetching gear which you can check out in the picture above!)

 

  • Terry Bikes Giveaway at Fitbloggin! I will also be talking about how I started working for Terry Bicycles which is one of THE top makers of cycling gear for women. Terry has never had a fitness ambassador before and it  has been such a pleasure for me to raise their awareness throughout the fitness community. Better than that-p-I will be giving away one Butterfly TI Gel Saddle to one lucky participant at the small group discussion. Whether you ride for sport or pleasure this seat will rock your socks off! Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

To know me is to be understanding when I endure one of my many computer issues and talk me off the ledge when I feel hopeless. (Oh technology—how hard it stings when you breakdown!) Currently I am working off of three laptops in various stages of usability but fear not—I am still here for you! So let’s get to this week’s Vlog post which features my Coppertone skin care review and more.

  • Shelton Koskie—Web Site Rock Star: One of the many technical failures of the past week that I have been dealing with was my Word Press site not working (And Go Daddy was less than helpful—thanks for taking my money every month you guys!) However I am fortunate to be acquainted with rock star Word Press God Shelton Koskie of Eighty Grit who helped me get my site back up and running. If you ever need website help—be sure to get in touch with Shelton (and tell him Margo gives him major props for problem solving!)
  • Joy Bauer Nourish Snacks: I have a new post to be featured soon on Fit Bottomed Girls talking about Today Show nutrition expert Joy Bauer and her new venture Nourish Snacks. In a nutshell—it is a home delivery service of yummy (and healthy!) snacks that cost just $12.50 per week (including shipping) and is being curated by Joy herself throughout the summer. How are you all doing? I had one heck of a week—not my favorite one in a while but I am soldiering on. Basically my laptop died last Friday before the holiday weekend and I have had to get my backup laptop up to speed so I can work and Blog. Well wouldn’t you know that this computer cannot connect to my printer for scanning and I need to sort that out ASAP.
