Health Cover Star for January/February:

I am not a Biggest Loser watcher as there are too many shows waiting in my DVR and on Netflix that will not watch themselves. However, I do love their newest trainer Jennifer (Jen) Widerstrom and philosophy “I’m not looking for dramatic results. I’m looking for consistency. Don’t sprint. Just be stable.” Yes!

Also the badass trainer’s thoughts on running “I hate it.” Me too!!!

Jen is a former American Gladiator (who joined the show on a lark) who was nicknamed “Phoenix” and owes her love of fitness to both parents who coached her. This issue she offers her own workout plus there is a 7-Day meal plan from the book The Biggest Loser Bootcamp: The 8_Week Get Real, Get-Results Weight Loss Program.

You can see Jen in action here:

So what else is inside the January/February Health?

“5 Fresh Ways to do a Plank”

Health magazine’s yoga expert Kristin McGee offers a few variations on the plank which will work your core extra hard. Tried these out on my bootcampers this morning and they loved (hated) them all!

“Get Firm in a Flash”

I like Tracy Anderson’s mat work but some of these look tricky to do, no?  They do offer a cardio effort in addition to toning.

“Superior Posterior”

One of my favorite trainers, David Kirsch, offers these moves to help get your glutes in top shape.

And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “Your Butt: A User’s Manual” This is not just about workouts for the proverbial junk in the trunk. This features also talks about sciatica pain, pulled hamstrings and more that can happen when things go awry with your backside.
  • “What Top Heart Docs Tell Their Friends” What the top cardiologists advise their friends on how to stay healthy including not worrying about salt so much (just cut out processed foods) and the kinds of fish you need to eat.
  • “5 Problems a Doctor Can Miss” And then sometimes doctors miss things—like IBS, Fibromyalgia and Lupus. Yikes!

B Overall it’s a good issue but I felt like it was missing something. Not sure what, but it seemed a little light for me this month. Maybe in the next issue?

What Do We Learn This Month in Fitness?

Padma Lakshmi

The impossibly stunning host of Bravo’s Top Chef graces the cover of the November/December issue and she gives fitness the inside dirt on her dining career. While filming episodes of the top-rated culinary series the former model admits that all of the sampling and tasting can cause her to gain 15 pounds per season. So how does she take it off when filming is done? She follows a clean diet meaning “no meats, no sweets, no alcohol, no cheese, no fried foods, no wheat.”

Padma also talks about staying fit for her three year-old daughter and shares her own recipe for spinach and plum salad. (Nom nom!)

“Shortcut to a Sexy Back”

The very blonde and very shimmery Tracy Anderson (trainer of Gwyneth Paltrow among other glamazons) offers this pretty cool workout to help get your back and rear get in shape. (Be prepared to use light weights and do high reps!)

“Bright Ideas”

Is everyone ready for a fun, colorful holiday gift guide? Me, me me! (I want that “Queen of the Mountain Jacket” from Athleta if anyone out there cares to know. Anyone, anyone?)

Gift Guide 001

“Go With the Flow”

Celebrity trainer Brett Hoebel (The Biggest Loser, Season 11) is a big fan of the Brazilian martial art Capoeira (I only know that from interviewing him for Fit Bottomed Girls!) Here he offers slight adjustments to those very dance-y/boxer-y moves to help get you in fighting shape.

Go With the Flow 001

And now the rest of this issue of Fitness:

  • “Outrun Danger” Yikes! Be careful people! You can be a top athlete (like triathlete Jenny Fletcher featured in this story) and have blood clot issues. Here we get tips on the symptoms of blood clots and how to prevent them.
  • “Pay Fit Forward” Awwww, these stories of fit women inspiring one another to get healthy made me really happy.
  • “Rise and Shine!” One year ago I committed to getting more sleep every night and it has changed my life. Fitness offers their own tips and advice on how to get a few more ZZZ’s.

A- Can’t wait to see you all in 2014! (Oh no—is it that just around the corner?!)

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 18

The Latest Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog featuring a Super-Fantastic Beginner Yoga Gear Giveaway, The “Biggest Losers” on The Diet Show, a Groovy Scale from Eat Smart

(Also, Undermining Comments from Well-Meaning Friends)

WW yoga kit array

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I have a really cool beginner yoga giveaway today that features a “Yoga Beginner’s Kit” from Weight Watchers and an Intro to Yoga DVD that I am so excited to offer today.

First, I need to give a shout out to Mark Pinhasovich (follow him on Twitter @BLMark) who was a winner on TV’s The Biggest Loser and is now one of the stars of an amazing show held at Stage 72 in New York called “The Diet Show.” It features funny & entertaining monologues from several BL competitors from the past including Tara Costa, Alfredo “Frado” Dinten and Erik Chopin plus we get a bit of old-school hilarity from comic Jeff ““The Fat Rat Bastard” Pirrami (I was lucky enough to hang out with his wife & daughter at the show) as well as a stripped down essay from model Krista Hays (really!)

You can get more information about The Diet Show here: http://stage72.com/?p=394

And now—here’s this week’s Vlog which features my new yoga gear & DVDs giveaway, a groovy Digital Scale from the folks at EatSmart Products plus the well-meaning but kind of condescending remarks I heard over a holiday meal about my healthy lifestyle. Oh–and my sister advised me to “show more skin” so I obliged. 🙂

Got that? Okay here are the details first for the yoga DVD:

New ‘ELEMENT: INTRO TO YOGA” DVD is the Perfect Place to Start!

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – Doesn’t it seem like there are more yoga studios than nail salons lately? In fact, the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association reports that participation in yoga is up 16.8% for the past two years. People who may have previously been afraid to invest the energy, time and money to give it a go, now have a simple option so that they may experience the many benefits of yoga for themselves. The new “Element: Intro to Yoga” DVD will be in stores and on Amazon.com from Anchor Bay Entertainment. Not only does it provide an easy way to begin a yoga practice right at home, it also offers an intermediate practice to grow into. Each practice is about thirty minutes long.

The “Element: Intro to Yoga” DVD is the newest offering from this best-selling mind/body DVD brand. It’s designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to yoga so that one may begin at any level and continually progress. Instructor Tamal Dodge’s fundamentals program moves step-by-step through the basics of yoga breathing, foundation postures, and short vinyasa flows. His intermediate sequence introduces the next stage of postures, offering more challenging versions of fundamental poses, and flowing through a series of full sun salutations. Both of these programs will build strength and tone muscle while they improve balance, increase flexibility, aid in relaxation, and allow anyone to begin realizing the positive impact that yoga can have.

No props are needed for these programs aside from a yoga mat though a yoga block may be helpful. As with all “Element” DVDs, this was filmed in a lush, tranquil location overlooking the ocean.

Raised in Hawaii on his family’s yoga ashram, Tamal Dodge began teaching yoga at the age of 16. He is the co-founder of The Yoga Collective, one of the largest yoga studios in the Los Angeles area, and is the owner/director of the Tamal Yoga School, a national yoga certification program. When he is not teaching at his studio or school, Tamal spends much of his time touring the world to share the benefits of yoga with people of all ages. His goal is not only to help people become physically fit but ultimately happier and more fulfilled. A talented composer and musician, Dodge composed the soundtrack and played most of the instruments on the DVD. He works with several celebrities including Cheryl Hines of “Suburgatory”.

Here is a clip from You Tube so you can see for yourself how great it is:

And here are the details for the Yoga Starter Kit from Weight Watchers:

Introducing Weight Watchers® Fitness Kits!

Beverly Hills, CA – Weight Watchers, the world’s leading provider of weight management services, and Anchor Bay Entertainment, a leading provider of fitness videos, are joining forces to make fitness more fun and more accessible to everyone. Three fitness kits will be available in mass merchants and on www.walmart.com beginning December 29, 2012. Each kit includes a workout DVD and all the fitness equipment needed along with a 10-week exercise tracker.

“Yoga Starter Kit” is the perfect way for anyone to dip their toes in and see why yoga has become so popular. The modifications shown for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels allow you to start where you are and try new variations as your experience level advances. The kit includes a comfort-sized yoga block and woven cotton strap along with the tracker and DVD. These props assist in stretching, help modify exercises for varying degrees of flexibility and are used to tone muscle. Sara Ivanhoe has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. According to Ivanhoe, “It can be difficult for someone new to fitness to maneuver a full sun salutation, for example, because you’re moving up, down and back up again. I took that out of the equation by making a standing routine and a floor routine, each 30 minutes long. My goal is to get everyone used to the basics first and build from there. Each practice will leave you feeling strong, energized and balanced.”

Awesomesauce! So what do you need to do in order to win?

If you are interested in getting a copy of this DVD & the Yoga Starter Kit (Continental U.S. only please—sorry to my Canadian Peeps!) you need to do the following three things:

  • Post a comment on my Blog below.
  • Sign up for my You Tube channel (if you have not done so already!) http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee
  • Tweet out your interest in this giveaway to @BrooklynFitChik and @AnchorBayEntFit

I will randomly pick a winner next Monday, January 14th at Noon (Eastern) and contact them directly. Good luck!!
