Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

As 2015 starts to move out the front door (and don’t let it hit you on the ass on your way out, Mister!) I am reflecting on the various playlists I have created throughout the year.

First a little explanation—I have fantastic taste in music. This is a proven fact and not the declaration from a conceited person. Everyone tells me they love my classes mostly for the tunes I curate into playlists. It’s expensive, time consuming and a total hassle to create a new 50 minutes that will (hopefully) impress my students and I thrill in it.

There are instructors who buy their music from an outside company and do not bother with creating their own playlists, I do not judge because all of the prep it takes to design each class, staying informed of the trends and keeping up with the fitness certifications equals several hours that you will not be paid.

Instructors are not compensation for prep work so if someone does this full time for a living—I give them a pass. I only teach 10 hours a week and I work from home so I can be a little more particular about what I bring to each hour I teach.

Today I want to give a shout out to the following online radio outlets that provide me with the tapestry of music I now bring to all classes.

The Peak FM (Westchester, NY): This is my “go-to” each morning to get the best of new and classic rock with some Adelle thrown in for good measure. Morning DJ “Coach” is my guy that gets me through my first cup of coffee and the “10 at 10” is splendidly done. When that is done I start to switch around on the Internets.

Radio Alice (San Francisco, CA): I went to college in the Bay Area (San Jose State specifically) and I like to keep up with the news there while also finding new tunes. “Sarah & Vinnie” are a good morning show team and because of Radio Alice I discovered P!nk, The Weeknd and Drake which I would never catch on rock stations. (Win/win, people!)

KFOG-FM (San Francisco, CA); One of my favorite stations in the whole world which almost went off the rails a few years ago with a horrible morning show change debacle (don’t even remind me of that garbage!) However, they are now properly back to basics with Renee, “No Name” and Irish Greg in the mornings. They also have their own “10 at 10” hosted by Annalisa who has sublime taste in music.

WLIR FM (Internet Station): WLIR was THE station to listen to in New York when I was a kid as they played all of the current “New Rock” plus classics of 80s New Wave thrown in. They are online only now with very, very few commercials and a mish mash playlist that includes JR JR, Beck, Avicii, Foo Fighters and then thrown in gems like T’Pau’sHeart & Soul” (an underrated classic IMHO.)

The Peak FM (Vancouver, BC): In my soul I am Canadian girl from Toronto who loves The Tragically Hip and Kids in the Hall but my favorite station from Toronto no longer plays online for Americans (boo!) I now depend on The Peak in Vancouver to give my rock fix with a Canuck flavor. Because of them I learned about Dear Rouge and Matthew Sweet. Great stuff here!

Sirius Satellite Radio: I don’t own a car so I listen to this online to catch Howard Stern (though his celebrity interviews are so looooong and boring now) and listen to the variety of channels they offer here. You can really dive deep into what your musical interests are with Sirius and some of the talk shows are fun as well. (But I understand if you do not want to pay the fee each month.)

WXRT FM (Chicago, IL): This is without question my favorite station in the world with an incredible catalog of music for the offering. In any one afternoon I can catch Prince, Bonnie Raitt, The Beatles, Adelle, Michael Franti, Pink Floyd and Depeche Mode. I am constantly finding new music from these guys & gals and feel such sadness when the Internet is down and I can’t listen to them. (Though the weather reports from there remind me that NYC cold is really not that cold at all!)

What are your favorite stations to listen to for inspiration?

Brooklyn Fit Chick Playlist: “Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed Ride” 9

BROOKLYN FIT CHICK’S PLAYLIST

“Big Blue Wave & RIP Lou Reed” (50-minute Ride)

RIP

RIP

Hey there! Hi there! How there!

I have two new online stations that have been rocking my world lately and helping me add to my playlists. Here they are:

  • WLIR online plays an amazing selection of alternative music from the last 30 years. Everything from the B-52s to Lorde to Depeche Mode. Now, since this is a free online station they get a little too crowded sometimes and you can’t log on. But if you, definitely try them out!
  • The Peak in Vancouver plays amazing alternative music plus tons of Canadian bands which are new to me and I am finding I really love.

Got that? So let’s get into to today’s playlist which consists of some old and new tunes to get you in the mood to run, cycle and workout harder. Let’s go!

  • Big Blue Wave: Hey Ocean!

Hey Ocean! Is a Canadian band that released this fun, frothy tune  last year. Love opening up with it in my classes.

  • Pump It: The Black Eyed Peas

One of my students asked me recently “who wrote that Pulp Fiction smash up song?” It took me a minute to figure out what she was talking about!

  • Come & Get It: Selena Gomez

I just lerve this song to pieces.

  • Breathing Underwater: Metric

I have said the before but I need to state again how much I regret not seeing this band when they played in New York last year. Will not make that same mistake again!

  • Rebellion: Arcade Fire

This is one of the best songs ever to climb to or make yourself work harder. It’s fantastic!

  • Rebel Yell: Billy Idol

OMG this is just the greatest song in the world. How does it get better than “in the midnight hour—she cried more, more, MORE!”

  • American Psyco: Treble Charger

Yet another Canadian band I was unaware of until The Peak!

  • Family Affair: Mary J. Blige

I am dedicating this one to my friend Stacy who introduced me to badass Mary J.

  • Spaceman: The Killers

I like to perform high intensity sprints to this song.

  • Simple Life: Elton John

This is one of Elton’s lesser known 90s tunes but I love it for long climbs and  the lyrics are really inspiring.

  • Hell: Tegan and Sarah

Hell yeah, I say!

  • Walk on the Wild Side: Lou Reed

This is one of those pieces of culture that inspired me to move to New York. I spent my whole life in the boring ‘burbs and I was ready to indeed walk on the wild side. (RIP Lou Reed. This city will be much less interesting without you in it.)

That’s all I have today folks. Let me know about some of your favorite songs and radio stations. I am always looking for good tunes.

Until next time…
