Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Last week I was not feeling well and could not film my regular Vlog but this week I am BACK and with a whole new giveaway. New York has been enjoying a lovely “last gasp of summer’ weather and I have been sure to get out there and enjoy it.

  • Book vs. Movie Is Now on iTunes!! I have been talking about a the podcast that Margo P. and I have created called Book vs. Movie podcast where we talk about books that have been turned into movies and discuss the differences between them. Our past episodes include Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Forrest GumpThe Help and The Firm.  All are rollicking good chats (though episodes 2 & 6 are haunted by technical issues) and now you can subscribe to us on iTunes! If you don’t mind terribly—please take a moment to subscribe as we are trying to get on to iTunes’ “New & Noteworthy” char. Namaste! Also, if you haven’t done so already feel free to “like” our Facebook page. (Thank you!)
  • So What’s the Next Book for Book vs. Movie podcast? Glad you asked because it is none other than The Princess Bride which was written as a novel by William Goldman back in the 70s and is now the movie classic we all know and love. Podcast to drop in the next couple of weeks!
  • Wanderlust Festival Post in Fit Bottomed Girls: A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the Wanderlust Yoga Festival in Brooklyn and my feature is now up on Fit Bottomed Girls with the greatest headline I will ever come up with again: The Om Before The Storm (damn, I am clever!)
  • Kinky Boots on Broadway: I have been hearing for months that the Kinky Boots musical is a must-see but I resisted. Sure, the movie was fun but how would it work on Broadway? Well let me tell you—when you have Harvey Fierstein and music by Cindi Lauper you have a magical experience at hand. I absolutely LOVED this show and recommend you catch it when it comes to your town.
  • My newest giveaway! Author Katy Bowman has a Blog http://www.katysays.com/ which is described as “witty and science-y” (and it is!) so today I am thrilled to offer her latest book Move Your DNA which you can learn more about below on my Blog and lower down this post. Good luck!
  • EleVen By Venus: Recently I joined the ambassador teach for EleVen by Venus (Venus Williams’ new athletic line) and in the Vlog today I am wearing a divine top–the Vintage Floral Hail Mary Tank which you all need to get today. (Let me know if you want a discount code for your first purchase!)

Now on to this week’s Vlog and giveaway details!

More Information about Move Your DNA by Katy Bowman, M.S.

MOVE YOUR DNA: Biomechanist’s new book reveals why healthy people don’t just exercise,

they move, why treadmills are movement “junk-food and how natural movements benefit our health right down to our DNA.

Seattle, WA – September 15, 2014: Diseases of captivity aren’t just for orcas. What happens when you take animals out of their biological habitat and stick them into office cubicles, cars and shoes? According to author and biomechanics scientist Katy Bowman, modern humans have manifested so-called “diseases of affluence” for a rather simple reason. We are not moving our bodies in all the ways that nature intended, instead repeating only a few postures and movements with little variation. In her science-based yet easy to understand book, ”Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement”, Bowman challenges many of the most widely held beliefs about getting healthy. “Move Your DNA” is available in trade paperback October 1 from Propriometrics Press on Amazon for $24.95 (ISBN: 9780989653947); ebook is $9.99. An audiobook with mileage markers to encourage walking while listening will be out September 15. For more information visit www.moveyourdna.com.

“Groundbreaking information with specific instructions for how to live well in your body. Katy Bowman is a practical genius.” – Christiane Northrup, M.D\

Bowman’s explains our need for natural movement right down to the cellular level. Readers will come to understand why our modern lifestyle doesn’t work for our bodies and how optimal movement can help restore health and reduce pain. Exercise as we know it isn’t always the right answer. “Move Your DNA” contains the corrective exercises, habit modifications, and simple lifestyle changes we need to make in order to free ourselves from disease and discover our naturally healthy, reflex driven selves.

In the book Bowman explores:

Whether Kegels do more harm than good

If standing is just as bad as sitting

The naked truth about barefoot running

Why fit people need the same joint replacements and back surgeries as couch potatoes

The myth that we need cardio exercise

What we can learn from orcas and their floppy dorsal fins (a la documentary “Blackfish”)

Bowman argues that movement is like nutrition, with varied and essential requirements. Every type of natural movement provides essential information right down to the cells, and even influences genetic

expression.

{Just a note—Katy Bowman is not sponsoring this post and her publisher will ship directly to the winner. This giveaway is only available to folks in the Continental United States.}

If you want to win three rolls of Move Your DNA featured in the Vlog above you must do the following (Continental United States only, please!)

  • Post a comment below (on this post) letting me know you are interested.
  • Send a comment on Twitter and say “I want to win “Move Your DNA” by @alignedandwell from @brooklynfitchik”

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog 89: Big News, Cranky Fitness and Postcards from the Edge of Brooklyn 4

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode #89

Super-Secret Project with a Fellow Margo, The Joys of “Cranky Fitness” and

My Super Brooklyn Postcard Extravaganza!

Could you use some postcard cheer?

Could you use some postcard cheer?

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am filled with good news today and want to shout it out from the rooftops but alas, I must keep it under wraps for another week or so. (Ooh—how can I keep this to myself? I am dying to talk about it!) Hang on impatient friends and family—there is a new project I am working on with my fellow Margo of She’s Nacho Mama Podcastand we are both crossing our fingers and sending good Juju out to the world that it will be something that lots of folks will enjoy. Not just our usual yoga, Zumba, spinning, workout and “playout” crew but also those who love entertainment.

Entertainment? What kind of entertainment Margo?

I have already said too much! Wait right here until next my next Vlog post (my 90th!) next week to get all the details. (Dying to say something but must restrain myself…)

In the meantime I want to introduce you to a new friend of mine—Jan from Cranky Fitness. Jan used to be an attorney and family therapist but now makes her bones as a life & wellness coach (as well as an ACE-certified wellness coach) and Blogger whose motto is “Healthy Living is a Pain in the Ass!” (What is not to love about this woman?) Cranky Fitness is an excellent resource on all kinds of health, fitness & nutrition topics including a few of my favorites here:

Jan also won the bike seat from Terry Bikes (and me!) at Fitbloggin this year. Be sure to check her out!

And now for my “Super Brooklyn Postcard Extravaganza!”

Recently I participated with a group of fellow Bloggers to send postcards to one another as encouragement and to say “hello” to people we don’t get to see in person very often. This idea had me thinking about all of the times when my students and social media followers take the time out of their busy days to tell me that I make them smile. I get so bogged down with all of my projects and responsibilities that it frankly makes me a “cranky” mess at times. (I know—shocking news, right?)

On Sundays I teach three back to back classes (spin/spin/core) and I have to admit there are times when I say to myself “Screw it—it’s Sunday and I am working again? Grrr!” (Especially on a beautiful morning when I would rather be out on my bike—double grr!)

However every week I still keep going and get such a happy buzz from helping folks end their weekend on a healthy note.

Today one of my favorites said to me that she loves my 10:30 am core class so much she schedules the weekend around it. “My kids know not to make plans with me until after 11:30 when you are done.”

This made me so happy that I decided to send my own encouragement out to those in the world who could use it. Are you in the need of a little postcard cheer? Then be sure to post in the comments below and send me a note on Twitter (@brooklynfitchik) and I will personally send you a postcard from my lovely Brooklyn. Really!

Here are more details!

Got that?

I will collect names & addresses until midnight, Sunday, July 27th (eastern time.) Hope you all have an amazing week and I can NOT wait to tell you my BIG news!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 68: Whoa Vertigo! Plus @TerryBikes @MaxFlowSports 10

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Episode 68

Featuring: A Vertigo Incident, My New Ambassadorships with Terry Bicycle and MaxFlowSports

Plus Final Reminder: NYC Healthy Blogger Brunch (Saturday, January 25th in Park Slope, Brooklyn)

Hey there! Hi there! Whoa there!

This past week I had a rather scary incident with vertigo. Well it lasted for almost three days so “incident” might not be the best way to describe what happened to me but on Monday morning I was teaching my usual core class at 8 am. There have been times in the past when I felt some dizziness when lying completely flat on my back (supine) or if I reached to the floor quickly when doing an interval move. Nothing crazy—but just a moment of feeling off balance and having to redirect myself that would happen from time to time.

This past Monday I was demonstrating a move on my back when all of a sudden I felt as if the room was spinning around me and I was completely disoriented. Hoping to just “snap out of it” I kept on talking and trying to reassure myself that everything was fine but after about 30 seconds I realized this was beyond a momentary sensation.

Turning my head to my “good” side I made eye contact with one of my students and said “please come over and help me.” Ten minutes later I was driven home by two friends who told me to make sure I eat something and get some rest. (“Must be your blood pressure!” offered one of my students.)

However deep down I knew differently–this was a BAD incident. It was not going to go away quickly either.

Two hours later I woke up from a nap with the dizziness still hanging on and my nerves completely frayed. Eventually I was able to walk to my pharmacist to get some Dramamine which helped somewhat but the symptoms lasted most of the time every single day until Thursday when I was finally able to see my brand new doctor with my brand new Obama-care insurance. (In fact, my insurance card arrived that very day.)

Turns out my inner ear canal was infected which aggravated the vertigo and ear drops helped alleviate many of my symptoms (along with a prescription for Meclizine.) I was even able to teach my classes on Friday & Saturday morning (off the bike and very much upright without too much motion) and am feeling better every day.

But now I must begin the process of finding out exactly what type of vertigo I have (there are several) and what I need to do (hopefully) prevent future “tumbles.”

Based on my symptoms so far I believe I have the following type of vertigo:

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

From the Mayo Clinic Staff:

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common causes of vertigo — the sudden sensation that you’re spinning or that the inside of your head is spinning.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is characterized by brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness. Symptoms of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo are triggered by specific changes in the position of your head, such as tipping your head up or down, and by lying down, turning over or sitting up in bed. You may also feel out of balance when standing or walking.”

What this means is that I will learn to do a series of exercises at home to get the ear crystals back in place that are floating around like freaks on a party boat right now. I am most hopeful this will work and secretly dread it could happen again while I am either driving, on the subway or just out in public and not in a safe place to be helpless.

But I know that I am also a badass and can take on any challenge in front of me. So I will keep you all up-to-date on my progress but if you know anything about vertigo—please reach out and let me know what you experiences have been and what works for you. I want to hear from you!

And now, cat photo time!

Now on to this week’s insanely happy news: (Drum roll!)

Terry Bicycles Ambassadors:

After months of reaching out and talking back & forth I can finally announce that I am a Terry Bicycles Ambassador! Whoo hoo! If you are not familiar with them—Terry makes some of the best cycling gear for women and I have been a fan of their for many, many years. I am beyond thrilled to help introduce them to a whole new audience of active chicks who want to look cute while staying safe on their two-wheelers. I will be writing a regular column for their monthly newsletter as well and will be sure to post them on my Facebook and Twitter page.

In the meantime, be sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

 Terry

MaxFlowSports:

Also, I was recently contacted by a new company called MaxFlowSports that creates some of the best (and secure) headbands on the market for men and women to keep you hair back and still look good.

Created by Steve Hines, these headbands are made with a “cross-grip” technology to stay in place on the top of your head no matter what workout your are doing. I cannot tell you how crazy it makes me to keep pulling on my headband into place when I am teaching. These hairbands work great and I am happy to call myself one of their new brand ambassadors.

Be sure to follow them on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

And if you would lie to try one and live in New York City—they will be included in the goodie bag at my Super, Super Brooklyn Blogger Brunch!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 66: NYC Blogger Brunch Details Plus @DoctorIanSmith Giveaway! #FitFluential 11

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 66

Featuring: The Brooklyn Fit Chick NYC Bloggers Brunch, the Da Vinci BodyBoard, Michael McKean and Beyoncé!

Plus: My Dr. Ian K. Smith Super Shred: The Big Results Diet

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s 2014 and I am back in the Blogging saddle—whoo hoo! December was sort of a roller coaster of wonderful and annoying occurrences but I am finally over my Christmas cold, my back is feeling better , I am back to my regular teaching schedules and am ready to get back to my orderly, scheduled life. (Really—I am rather orderly in my everyday life!)

This year I broke away from my usual declarations for the New Year. To be honest—all of my possible mottos, promises, and intentions that I almost wrote on this Blog seemed trite. 2013 was a pretty great year and I am really looking forward to what is around the corner. Maybe I am learning to temper my expectations? Perhaps I need to think on it some more. But I faced a blank page every day for a week trying to come up with New Year’s post that would hopefully be inspiring and came up with nothing.

How about you? Did you come up with any resolutions? What are you planning to take on this year? I want to hear all about it!

Anyway—here are the notes for my first Vlog post for 2014:

  • Attention NYC-based health, fitness and wellness Bloggers–I am hosting a Brooklyn Fit Chick NYC Bloggers Brunch on Saturday, January 25th from 1-4 pm here at my place here in Park Slope. There will be goodie bags! For more details and/or to RSVP reach out to me at brooklynfitchick at gmail dot com. Hope you can make it!
  • BFC Brunch Invite
  • The Da Vinci BodyBoard is now in my apartment and I will have it reviewed on Fit Bottomed Girls soon. (Spoiler—I love it!) Here is a photo of Flohery Mahoney demonstrating it to me a few weeks ago.
  • Floery Mahoney demonstrating the Da Vinci Body Board in my messy apartment!

Floery Mahoney demonstrating the Da Vinci Body Board in my messy apartment!

  • The amazing, talented and gifted comedic actor Michael McKean responded to one of my Tweets on Christmas Eve and it totally rocked my world. Here is a screen grab!
  • 2013-12-24 14_53_21-HootSuite
  • Beyonce released a “visual album” and I am incapable of NOT watching/listening to it every single day since I downloaded it. If you are on the fence about whether or not to get it—just get it. You will thank me later. (You’re welcome!)
  • Finally—I am giving away one copy of Dr. Ian Smith Super Shred: The Big Results Diet to one lucky reader. Details after the Vlog!

Now let us get to this week’s giveaway!

Super Shred

SUPER SHRED

The Big Results Diet/ Ian K. Smith, M.D.

4 Weeks, 20 Pounds, Lose it Faster!

SUPER SHRED: The Big Results Diet by #1 New York Times bestselling author Dr. Ian Smith is a four-week supercharged weight loss plan based on a combination of new science and the dieter-tested concepts behind Dr. Ian’s #1 mega-bestseller of 2013, Shred: The Revolutionary Diet.  Dr. Ian was also recently announced as co-host of the Emmy-winning daytime talk show The Doctors.  (St. Martin’s Press, $24.99)

Shred became a national phenomenon in 2012, when Dr. Ian shared the diet with a core group of followers on Twitter.  Soon, “shredder cells” began forming in cities across the country, and a movement was born—Shred became an instant #1 bestseller upon publication, and has spent 23 weeks and counting on the New York Times bestsellers list (6 weeks at #1).  There are now 20 shredder cells nationwide, and the national SHREDDER Nation Facebook page allows tens of thousands of shredders to communicate, get support, and hear the latest on weight loss and living a healthier life.

In SUPER SHRED, Dr. Ian distills his successful diet plan into a concentrated, shorter program.  It’s a “destination diet,” for the goal-oriented person who wants faster, more dramatic results right away, and for those who have a specific target they need to reach by a certain date—a beach vacation, a reunion, a wedding, or a doctor’s orders to lose weight quickly for health reasons.  In other words, this is a “crash” diet, but one that is completely healthy, flexible, and effective and doesn’t involve the unhealthy extreme measures that rapid weight loss typically demands.

After thousands of pleas via email and Twitter, Dr. Ian created a program that could deliver big results in a short period of time, without jeopardizing health.  He went to the SHREDDER Nation on Facebook and Twitter and put the new program to the test, and the results were absolutely amazing—average weight loss in just 4 weeks was 20 pounds.  But weight loss wasn’t the only measure of success.  Many SHREDDERS dropped 2 sizes, lowered their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and reduced their need for diabetes medications.

Each week of SUPER SHRED has a different theme and purpose: Foundation, Accelerate, Shape, Tenacious.  The weeks work progressively, and symbolize what the program is designed to do:  to take weight off F.A.S.T.  With easy-to-follow menus, shopping lists, recipes, exercise plans and the motivational help to stick with it, SUPER SHRED is the key to dropping pounds, breaking through a plateau and reaching your finish line.

In order to win a copy of this book (Continental U.S. only!) you must do the following:

  1. Post a comment below (on this particular blog post).
  2. Tweet out your interest by saying “I want to win @DoctorIanSmith from @BrooklynFitChik”
  3. Subscribe to my You Tube here (let me know if you are already subscribed!) http://www.youtube.com/user/BrooklynFitChick1

I will randomly pick one winner Monday, January 13th at NOON eastern time and contact them directly. Good luck and enter as often as you like!

Until next time…

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 47 Featuring “My 5 Favorite Things” @Reebok @StephenColbert @paulscheer @katespade 6

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 47

Featuring the BFC “5 Favorite Things”

Someone please justify why I must buy these pumps for myself!

Someone please justify why I must buy these pumps for myself!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This has been a fun week for me where I had the chance to connect with some amazing old friends and see a couple I love FINALLY have their relationship recognized legally (it’s the 21st Century, people!) This all made me want to appreciate how wonderful my August is turning out so far and  this week I want to offer the five things that are making me smile. And here they are:

  1. The Reebok Sublite 2.0 I received in my goodie bag from the Fitness magazine Meet & Tweet NYC. Reebok gave me the sneakers for free and they are not sponsoring this post so I can say what I want about them and what I want to say is these are the best damn sneakers I have worn in MY ENTIRE LIFE! I run in them, cycle, teach boot camp and walk all over in these puppies and they give great support and look pretty damn spiffy. Free plug for you Reebok!
  2. My love for the site www.jezebel.com just continues to grow because not only are they funny, smart ass feminists but they also love animals and offer adorable clips every day. Here is a video of a sexy Italian guy teaching his dog yoga poses. If there is anything cuter on the net please do not tell me—I could not handle it!
  3. Stephen Colbert really knows how to take a setback and turn it into an opportunity. Earlier this week when Daft Punk rudely dropped out of an appearance on his show and Colbert was clearly NOT happy about it. But in the end he took their song “Get Lucky” and made a star-studded video (featuring Jeff Bridges, The Rocketttes, Matt Damon and more) that made me smile so hard my face started to hurt. How lucky are we to be alive watch him at the top of his game?
  4. The ArScheerio Paul Show which features comedian Paul Scheer who recreates old Arsenio Hall Show interviews featuring himself as “ArScheerio Paul” and his comic friends in the parts of past famous guest. For example Will Arnett as “Bill Clinton” and (my favorite) Alison Brie as “Madonna” and Adam Pally as “Rosie O’Donnell”. I remember these interviews the first time around and thinking they were pretty cray for the time. I will embed clips below of the original interview of Rosie and Madonna as it is an incredible time capsule as one woman is at the top of her fame and her new BFF starting to figure out her way (and dodge the “who are you dating” question.)
  5. The Kate Spade shoes I had the pleasure of trying on at a friends wedding after-party (I will explain in the Vlog.) There is no reason for me to get these shoes except that I just really, REALLY want them. (Must resist temptation…)

Anyhoo—here is this week’s Vlog post:

And here is the ArSheerio Hall Show Clip of “Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell”

Now, check out the real interview! (How bitchy is Madonna by the way? I miss this girl.)

That’s all for me today. Hope you are all enjoying your August as well! Smooches!
