Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

It’s been over a week since my “dog bite/scratch” incident and my face is healing up very nicely. To get the full story just check out last week’s post plus I will give some details in the Vlog below. Thanks so much for all of the follow up and well wishes. You are all officially THE BEST.

Last week I also caught that nasty cold that has been hanging around Brooklyn so that was the big reason I could not film my Vlog last week. I was not embarrassed about how I look but could not promise a cough-free episode and ain’t nobody got time for that! So let me get though today’s news and then we will talk about this week’s new giveaway (Weight Watchers Ultimate Dance Kit.)

  • Book Vs Movie Podcast: We are now hosted by Libsyn which means the episodes will be edited down and (mostly) error-free from now on so be sure to subscribe to us at our new link on iTunes right here https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bookvsmovies-podcast/id954110320?mt=2 and stay tuned for our next episode—Primary Colors. Margo P. and I will talk about the Joe Klein book and the Mike Nichols We are always looking for suggestions so let me know what you would like for us to cover next!
  • Fit Bottomed Girls New Year/New Rear Challenge: Y’all know that I am a card-carrying, proud member of the Fit Bottomed Girls Every January Jenn, Erin & Co. create a month’s worth of challenges to get you excited about the new year and also tackle some long-held fitness goals. Be sure to check them out every single day and get 2015 off to the right start!
  • Exercises the Experts Ditched: Speaking of Fit Bottomed Girls—I am proud to day I wrote this feature asking the top fitness experts on the exercises they no longer do and what they do to replace them which you can check out here.
  • New York Times’ “Race to the Front Row” Article: This past Thursday my spin class students kept saying to me did you read about “the front row” in the New York Times? It’s a feature that basically talks about the cache of being in the front row for certain fitness classes. I am not a big fan of the teacher-worship culture that exists in the fitness world. The way I see it—some people want fans and some people want students. I want students and I hate the idea people are made to feel like garbage for not being good enough to be seen in a classroom that they paid upwards of $35 to attend. But, that is just me. What do you think? I really want to know!
  • Envizualizing My Next Fitness Goal (The Box Jump!) Going back to Fit Bottomed Girls again—I told the lovely Jenn that my big fitness goal is to perform rad box jump. She said “go for it!” and “get me the post by early March” so I guess it is time to get to work! So this past weekend at one of the gyms where I work Pongo Power we celebrated our first anniversary with a party that include a station with artist Jonny Goldsetin who helps people map out their goals with a mixture of talk therapy and an original piece of artwork from Jonny. Here is his “Envizualize” version of my first box jump. I think it is pretty neat! (Thanks Jonny!)

What Did We Learn This Month? Health magazine with Christina Hendricks 0

What Did We Learn This Month?

Health

May 2014

Christina Hendricks photographed by James White

Health Cover Star for May:

Christina Hendricks

OMG—I love Mad Men and Joan Harris is one of my favorite characters on the show. She looks beautiful inside the magazine but the actress doesn’t really say all that much about being healthy. Well, except that Christina replaces Greek yogurt for some high-fat dairy items and prefers yoga pants to sweats.

(Inside the magazine she wears a smashing white suit from Armani that should have been the cover IMHO.)

Moving on…

So what else is inside the May Health?

“Swim in Style”

Health offers some really cute ideas for swim suits that make me think summer might actually arrive sooner than later. (Yippee!)

 Cute suits 001

“Tracy Tones You”

Tracy Anderson gives her favorite “thigh and butt-blaster” moves that I am sure will tire the hell out of me but make my legs look great. (I do love her mat work.)

Tracy Anderson 001

“A User’s Manual: Your Urinary Tract”

Women have more urinary issues than men and therefore need to be extra careful about potential issues such as UTIs, incontinence and interstitial cystitis.

Urinary Tract 001

“Get on a Roll”

As a fit chick who loves her bike this feature made me all kinds of happy with the latest gear for cyclists and exercise tips from trainer Michelle Lovitt that specifically address biker issues. (My friends at Terry Bikes made the cut!)

Gear Up 001
And now the rest of the best of this issue of Health:

  • “We Lost the High-Tech Way” The latest weight-loss apps are tested out by real women (and not editors) including those Spark People, Weight Watchers online and My Fitness Pal.com to see how well they work under real-life conditions.
  • “New Sensitive Skin Solutions” As someone who has bouts of rosacea—these articles are always of interest to me.
  • “The Secret to a Serious Calorie Burn” I am not much of a runner but for my students who are I am going to recommend they read this article about how increasing their pace can improve their overall fitness level (including metabolism!)

Overall Grade:

B This was overall a good issue but a little light on features that grabbed my interest and made me go “ooh!” Maybe next month?

“Have a Quickie”

So we are all too damn busy for words and fitting in a workout can be challenging but have no fear—Janet Lee gives these challenging full body workouts that can be done in just five minutes.

If you are looking for moves to make your core stronger than check out the three version of a side plank from trainer Jay Cardiello.

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog: Ep 63 New Weight Watchers DVD Giveaway! Plus Movie & Books Recommendations 22

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 63

Featuring: Latest Book/Movies Reviews, A Christmas Tree

Plus: Weight Watchers DVD Giveaway & Kittens!

ww 15 minute 3dww ultimate belly 3d

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

Now on to this week’s Vlog & My Groovy Giveaway!!

Last week I took off from midday Wednesday until today (Sunday afternoon) with the intention of taking fitness classes in the city, setting up a whole slew of Blog posts for December and cleaning out my office which is a nightmare of disorganization and mess right now. But alas, my little introverted inner self decided instead I needed to REST and RELAX for a few days and just do a whole lot of nuthin’.

First, I decided to put on my Christmas tree because the guys who sell them across the street from my apartment (really!) set up early this year. What do you think?

Christmas Tree 2013

THEN I made sure to relax with the following bits of entertainment.

Books:

  • Friends who know me well are used to my fascination with true crime and Manson: The Life & Times of Charles Manson by Jeff Guinn did not disappoint but it did give me nightmares so beware!
  • Being a fan of spoofs and oral histories (plus believing that J.D. Salinger is completely overrated as a writer This Would Drive Him Crazy: A Phony Oral History of J.D. Salinger was just the tonic I needed to laugh again. The writer is Tom Ruprecht (Thanks for the recommendation Erin!)
  • After that spoof I bummed myself out again with the excellent 27: the 27 Club which is all about the short lives of Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Amy Winehouse and Janis Joplin and written by Howard Sounes.
  • I finished up with something sad, funny and disturbing August: Osage County by Tracy Letts which I saw on Broadway years ago and am eager to see Meryl Streep put her own touch on the main character who of the crazy mother of all mothers.

As you can see I am in need of some light-hearted books to check out in December so feel free to send me your suggestions. Thanks!

Also this past long weekend I checked out a few movies and here is my quick summary of each:

  • CBGB: If you think it is impossible to make a decent movie about The Ramones—you are correct.
  • Man of Steel: If you think there have been too many Superman movies—you are right. (I love you Amy Adams but Lois Lane you are NOT.)
  • Gravity: If you think that George Clooney and Sandra Bullock are impossibly charismatic and can overcome a weak script based on charm and excellent 3D effects—yup.

Lastly—I am late getting this post up because I played with a pile of kittens today. OMG they were SO CUTE!!!! Here is a picture of one of them with half of this week’s giveaway (and one very sad-looking shoe box.)

Kitten with Video

So let’s get to the Vlog now!

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I have lots of fun news and a new OMG-worthy book giveaway to talk about this week so I could just babble on and on and waste your time or I can just get right into it.

First, the fun news of the week:

Weight Loss Rebels

  • I am now officially an Ambassador for Weight Loss Rebels—whoo hoo! Weight Loss Rebels is an excellent fitness & healthy lifestyle web site led by the ah-mazing Meg Brown aka Fit Bitch who believes in “In a nutshell, that fitness and diet should not be a punishment, that it’s a psychological process, and that severe calorie restriction and excessive cardio have no place in anyone’s program.” Check out their site to get more details about Weight Loss rebels which now includes recipes by my Blogger buds Pineapple & Coconut and Cavegirl Confections. Do it!

Kelly E 001

  • My friend Kelly E. of Curvy Fit Girl is featured as a success story in the November/December issue of Weight Watchers magazine! Kelly has lost over 100 pounds on Weight Watchers and following a Paleo diet and she inspires me every day on Twitter. Be sure to follow her on Facebook and Twitter!

Strong magazine 001

  • STRONG fitness magazine: Did you all see the latest entry on the magazine shelves out there? STRONG fitness magazine is brand new on the market and aims to take on the Oxygen magazine audience by featuring super fit women photographed beautifully. Here is the cover with Rachel Davis (see below.) I will have a review of it soon!

Anyhoo—on to the giveaway!

Brooklyn Fit Chick Giveaway of “The 21-Day Sugar Detox” by Paleo rock star Diane Sanfilippo, BS, NC:

Those of you who follow me know that I am a big Paleo follower (no, it is not a DIET to me nor do I push it on anyone else.) This plan makes me feel better mentally & physically than I have most of my adult life and one of my favorite Paleo cookbooks is Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo, BS NC. This book is flagged and ready to use at all times in my kitchen with one of my favorite recipes being bacon-wrapped chicken thighs (nom nom!)

This past week she held a party in honor of her latest offering The 21-Day Sugar Detox which I had to miss because of work stuff (dammit!) but I was given the opportunity to give away two copies of her book (yay!) If you want to know more about the plan—check out this video from Diane:

Here are more details about “The 21-Day Sugar Detox”:

Are you ready to get your sugar and carb cravings under control? The 21-Day Sugar Detox is a clear-cut, effective, whole-foods-based nutrition action plan that will naturally re-set your body and your habits! More than 10,000 people have already succeeded with this easy-to-follow plan. Now it’s your turn! In just three weeks, you can free yourself from cravings, regain your energy, and feel great again.

This simple detox plan will help you break the stronghold of your worst go-to foods: the sweets, the refined grains you grab on the go, even the many seemingly “okay” foods that contain hidden sugars. These foods taste great, but they make you look and feel terrible. They rob you of your focus, spawn irrational mid-afternoon cravings, and make it so you can’t even get through the day without wanting–no, needing–to prop up your energy level with caffeine or, worse, even more sugar!

It’s time to break the cycle. The 21-Day Sugar Detox offers easy-to-follow meal plans and more than 75 recipes suitable for all levels of the program. Even better, it gives you three options so you can determine the level of detox you want. Whether you’ve never gone sugar or gluten free; you already follow a gluten- and grain-free diet; or actively follow a Paleo/Primal diet–there’s a level for you. Choose the level that’s best for you — and bust a lifetime of sugar and carb cravings in just three weeks.

The 21-Day Sugar Detox even includes special modifications for athletes (including endurance and CrossFit/HIIT-style training); pregnant/nursing moms; vegetarians/ vegans; and those with autoimmune conditions.

Start The 21-Day Sugar Detox today. Why wait?

Whew! Now on to this week’s Vlog post with more details:

Got that? Now, if you want to be in the running to win one of the two copies I am giving away this week (Continental U.S. only!) you must do the following:

  1. Post a comment below (on this particular blog post).
  2. Tweet out your interest by saying “I want to win @BalancedBites from @BrooklynFitChik”
  3. Use the hashtag “21DSDbook”

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Ep 58: Featuring @BitchCakes @SparkPeople @TheCoachNicole 7

Brooklyn Fit Chick Vlog Episode 58

Featuring: Things That Are Making Me Happy This Week

(Including Bitch Cakes, Fit Bottomed Girls, Howard & Beth Stern and Oxygen magazine)

Planning a NYC Potluck Brunch (November 2nd!)

and My Review of Spark Activity Tracker

mbsl_glow

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

This past week has been crazy busy for me filled with meetings, teaching classes, going to press events and checking in with old friends visiting NYC. These are the very things that make me happy and I am feeling extra blessed lately. (Thank you all for being a part of my life!)

So today I want to give “shout outs” that are making me happy this week including the planning of my first “NYC Healthy Blogger Brunch” and my review of the Spark Activity Tracker  from  the folks at Spark People. So let’s get to it, shall we?

What Makes a Brooklyn Fit Chick Happy?

  • I was honored to get a signed copy of Sheryl Yvette’s appearance in Weight Watchers magazine. Doesn’t she look fantastic? I first saw Sheryl several years ago during a bike ride where she wore a glamorous outfit (which included high heels) and a pink bike. At the time I was too shy to approach her and tell her about my fandom. It’s such a thrill for me to now say we are social media friends and I can’t wait to find out her next set of adventures. (Go Sheryl!)
  • Sheryl WW 001
  • Getting to meet up with Jenn of Fit Bottomed Girls while she was in New York. Jenn is based in Kansas City and I just admire her commitment to health and fitness and creating a site that makes everyone feel welcome and supported. (Go Jenn!)
  • The North Shore Animal League 2014 Calendar from Howard & Beth Stern which arrived at my place this past week autographed by both of them. Howard took photos of his wife Beth (who is a strong animal right advocate) with various shelter animals with the proceeds going to the North Shore Animal league which is a no-kill shelter based in Long Island, NY. Only $24.95 and tons of cuteness on every page. Great for stocking stuffers!
  • Beth Stern Calendar 001
  • Oh look—its Oxygen magazine’s November issue!!!!!!!! The much-missed Oxygen is back ladies and I could not be happier. (Review of the new issue to come this week!)

Oxygen November Cover 001

NYC Healthy Bloggers Potluck Brunch!

Also, this past week I decided to open my domicile to a Healthy Bloggers Brunch. Soooo—if you are based in NYC and would be free on Saturday, November 2nd at about 1 pm in Brooklyn—be sure to let me know! I am working on getting a couple of sponsors for the goodie bags and will need an accurate head count. Just leave a comment below and I will e-mail the details. Bring a dish and enjoy time with some fellow fit-minded peeps!

My happy home. It will be cleaned up by Saturday!

My happy home. It will be cleaned up by Saturday!

Spark Activity Tracker:

sparkactivitytrackercolorsandclips

(Quick disclaimer: I was supplied the product free of charge from Spark People and not compensated for this review. The opinions are my own and based on my experience with the item.)

Finally—I received the Spark Activity Tracker a few weeks ago from Coach Nicole Nichols herself (not that I am bragging or anything…) and am in LOVE with it! I have tried different kinds of tracking systems in the past but found them to be too big and clunky to use on an everyday basis.

The Spark Activity Tracker is a combination effort of Spark People (which is the largest online weight-loss and fitness community) with FitLinxx to create this tiny, portable battery operated device that you can attach to your sneaker, bra strap or waist band to track steps, calories burned, distanced achieved and total activity time. Some of its best features include:

  • Waterproof to 100 feet (safe for swimming)
  • No charging required—you simply replace the battery in about six months’ time
  • It automatically figures out the difference between a casual stroll and a hard workout.
  • It syncs automatically via a UB dongle
  • It’s only $59.95 and is available on Spark People’s site as well as on Amazon.com.

What else can I say? This a product of great value if you are interested in tracking your fitness results and would be a perfect gift for anyone in your life who loves workout-related gadgets.

Want more? Check out my Vlog post today!

That’s all I have for today. I will be here all week with magazine reviews, workout playlists and giveaways. Y’all come back now, ya hear?

Until next time…
