Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

How are you all? Are you good? Me? Thank you for asking—my week started out a big bucket of suck and ended kind of “meh” for me.

Have you ever attempted a challenge and then thought “Can I really be this lame?” I had an unfortunate encounter with someone that I don’t want to dwell on too much but let’s just say their demeanor towards me was the cherry on top of the sh*t sundae that is 2014. Yep, this year has not been that great for me with tons of personal stuff going on that I don’t like to expose to you fine people.

Yet every day I get out of bed and keep working on goals. I have an idea I want to manifest in my life. It’s been tougher than I expected but I WILL MAKE IT HAPPEN. It may take another year of ten years but I am going to bring my dream to life! Whenever I feel broken down, ridiculed, humiliated I remind myself that hell—I am STILL HERE. This is my theme song sung by Jarvis Cocker (written be Stephen Sondheim) and I want to share it with any of you out there that could use a boost (You’re welcome!)

 

Okay now that we all feel empowered; let’s get on to this week’s news and giveaway!

  • Wobble Board Self-Challenge: This is my third week using my Go Fit wobble board whenever I am checking e-mails at my desk. I have a standing desk which I know is better for me than sitting all day but I still tend to stoop over and my posture is suffering.  Overall my experience is that the Wobble Board has been an excellent way for me to proprioceptively challenge my body while still getting work done. Win/win! (No one paid me to say this by the way. I bought it with my own money and this is my true opinion.)
  • Tracy Anderson—the “No Certification Owning Celebrity Personal Trainer” Thinks Spin Classes Make Bulky Thighs: If you know me—you know I have some issues with Tracy Anderson and her offbeat ideas on training and nutrition. First the woman instructs her female clients should never use a weight heavier than 3 pounds because it will give create big arms. (Seriously.) She also sold a diet program a few years ago which was in essence promoting deprivation. Now she is telling the Daily Mail that Spin classes will make you gain weight! This is utter nonsense and it makes me crazy. I will include a sample of her “Dynamic Eating Plan” that was supposed to help you lose weight and detox (another word I hate.) Take a look at it for yourself and tell me if this would satisfy you after working out for her recommended 60-90 minutes per day EVERY DAY!

Let me confess that I do rather enjoy her mat routines (leg lifts) even though they kill me. She is an interesting choreographer and seems to really put a great deal of effort of trying to make the old look new which is not easy.  However, her fitness advice is not always backed by science so keep that in mind when reading her pronouncements.

What else do I want to talk about today?

  • Do You Know About “Text Neck?” Also from the Daily Mail is this article talking about how poor posture and stooping your neck down to check your phone will add up to 60 pounds of pressure on your neck! That is not good in case you are wondering. Compensations like this can cause major health issues so please take the time and make sure your head and neck are in proper alignment throughout the day!
  • Key & Peele’s Aerobics Challenge: For all of you who love the 1987 clip of the Crystal Light Aerobics Championship that hit the internet this past week you have to check out this hilarious (and very dark) spoof from Key & Peele which is accurate down to the use of the music.
  • Book vs. Movie “Bridget Jones’s Diary”: So what book are we tackling next on the Book vs. Movie podcast? Margo P. (aka “She’s Nacho Mama” and me will talk about the hit book that came out in 1995 (!) plus the beloved film starring initially controversial choice Renee Zellweger so get your granny panties ready for a good chat. Hey there! Hi there! Ho there!

I am back in the saddle of Blogging and Vlogging and have SO much to tell you all that I think I am going to burst! It’s been a hectic week here and I have much to share (including a new yoga DVD giveaway) so let’s get to it shall we?

  • My Go Fit Wobble Board Self-Challenge: For almost three years now I have been working at a standing desk which I thought would help my core but lately realize that I am still not engaging myself proprioceptively—in other words my sense of balance is hardly ever challenged and my shoulders are showing signs of not-cute stooping. YIKES! So I am challenging myself to try and balance on a Go Fit wobble board whenever I am checking e-mails at my desk. It’s been two days so far and let me tell y’all—standing on a wobble board is hard as hell! So far I have found it to be a humbling experiment but I am going to report back to you all in one month to let you know my progress with it. (Shoot–now I am making myself accountable, huh?)
  • Whoa-This is a Spin Class FAIL: I have seen this video of a super-rowdy spin class all over the place and boy do I hate to be the spoil sport here but this is NOT a regulation indoor cycling class. I have been teaching for almost 10 years now and can spot terrible form all over the room (with WAY too much stress upper back/trapezius muscles) and the moves are just not safe! Okay, yes—they are exercising and having fun. The spirit in the room is truly inspiring, but I have to say that beware of any spin class where you are out of the saddle and doing crazy moves. (And for love of all that is healthy and sane in this world—enough with the damn “push-ups” on handlebars!) I go into more detail in the Vlog below on why this video is a big bucket of NOPE in my book.
  • Students With Possible Body Dysmorphia: Fellow instructors please help me! I have a student who takes my boot camp class who is so upset about wanting to lose five pounds she wants to drop my class because I am not “intense” enough for her. Let me make this clear—if I thought I was the issue I would walk away and wish her well. But this young lady does NOT need to lose weight and I am worried she has body dysmorphia. I am not her therapist but feel a responsibility towards her. Any advice for me on how I should handle this situation? Thank you in advance!!
